[poll] Zip or Rar

Hi I make some skins, but pack them in rar files, what do you prefer, zip or rar?

rar can compress files better than zip....but winzip user interface is better dan winrar !alien

I have the lastest version of WinZip and WinRar so it really doesn't matter to me.

for the sake of the site, put them in RAR to save disk space. The newbs that don't know what they are will ask regardless of what is in the FAQ anyways, lol

I use ExtractNow, it's a very good unzipper tool, with lots of options for unziping. Files it will unzip are zip, rar, ace, lzh, lha, jar. Only thing it wont zip files so you have to have another tool to make zip or rar files. I got my ExtractNow a while back on Download.com. It was free then, maybe it still is. Hope this helps if anyone is having trouble unziping files :)

well I repack them to 7-Zip format after I download sims2 files, pack a little smaller then rar... and I use a free pack program called IZArc

Winzip is trash. Winrar rules all. 'taint pretty, but 'tis smaller and more functional. and it opens just about everything.

I agree, I like Zip more, but the extra step or two to open Rar isn't difficult, just a very minor annoyance

:D I used winzip for years, but recently switched to winrar. It's far supperior to winzip, and easier to use.

I like winrar better, and rar files better. They're smaller and just as easy to extract. I have some winrar program that will unzip both kinds of files, though.

I think modders prefer winrar, but that most people who download prefer winzip. Maybe it's because we're used to it, maybe it's because winzip is free and winrar isn't, who knows. I just like winzip better. It opens several files at a time, as opposed to one at a time from winrar, and I don't get a message telling me to register after opening every single file in winzip. Winrar is for people who don't mind spending money on products that they rarely, if ever, use. My hubby likes winrar, but then he also likes limewire, iTunes, weatherbug, and six dozen other programs that I would NEVER put on my computer.

What the heck is WinZip? Doesn't anyone know there has been a zip/unzip utility built INTO Windows for the past 8 years?

Using 7-zip I actually don't care. ;)

Ideally, I prefer zip files 'cause there are freeware compression programs available for this format.
It's my main issue with rar: it's not free. (only the extractor as I recall it)

Ultimatezip2.7 is a free download and it does a slew of different files, including Zip and Rar. You may want to try it out.

Look, it's a matter of preference. However, I just uploaded a few skin packages (wait, they'll come up later) and found that they were just a smidge too big as zips, but no problem as rars. There are plenty of free programs that will compress and uncompress as rar, or rar and zip, so there's no reason to insist on downloading one or another or asking a creator to change the compression format. However, the sites prefer as small a file as possible, and that's why you'll sometimes see admins or mods insisting on rar.

I prefer bzip2, but if I have to choose between ZIP and RAR, I go with ZIP. It's the longstanding standard, and the difference in size for RAR is not worth the extra pain in the butt.

I like rar better, actually I like winrar better as you can extract lots of files at once where as my crappy zipper only does it one at a time. only draw back of winrar is you have to pay. I used to have a free version but I can't find it so basically I have around 20 days left.
ANyone know where the free one can be found?

I actually have a purchased WinZip, but I use IZArc all the time because it deals with both zip files and rar files without any of the annoying popups you get with winzip or winrar.
