Custom careers a detailed guide to planning and building!
If you have downloaded BIDOU’s career editor this is not the tutorial for you (although it may help) as I’ve never used the career editor so cannot say how it is used!
YOU WILL NEED
Simpe
Blank career package which can be downloaded from the bottom of this thread
Ok so I’ve now created a custom career and messed about with it enough to understand what’s going on! If you want a full step by step with all the jargon and why it all works then this is not the tutorial for you but if you want a very basic guide which a beginner can easily follow this is what I’m aiming at! Attached to this thread at the bottom is a template (empty) career. I suggest you download this
1 open the template and just have a look at what’s in there without changing anything just to familiarize yourself with the contents.
2, The basis of your career
Close the file! We don’t need it yet! Open up good old Microsoft word or your own equivalent and begin. What we need to start is 10 job descriptions. You can have different ones for male and female but as this is your first career I recommend just using the same for both.
Each description needs a title and a short description for example:
Title Career writer
Description: you are now in charge of writing careers for Sims 2
3, chance cards
The next part is a mammoth challenge. We need chance cards!
Still using word type up the following for your new career:
For chance cards we need 10 cards for male and 10 cards for female
(The easiest way is to use the same text just change all the “he” to “she” and the “his” to her … this consists of:
• 10 scenarios (one for each employment level) for each gender
• 2 options the sim in question could answer. (yes or no for example)
• Option A good result (for both genders and for every card)
• Option A bad result (for both genders and for every card)
• Option B good result (for both genders and for every card)
• Option B bad result (for both genders and for every card)
This does take a little while!
Make sure you spell-check it all and check the grammar!
Now make a list of what your Sims earn or lose as a result of every chance card; this can be money, skill points or job level DON’T WORRY ABOUT HOW TO DO IT YET … JUST WRITE IT DOWN!!
An example:
CHANCE CARD ONE
(Simname) gets a phone call, maxis want him to come in for a seminar, he has to finish his new career by noon tomorrow, does he go to the seminar?
YES NO
Yes is chance A you have two outcomes:
CHANCE A GOOD
(Simname) goes to the seminar, maxis love him and he gets promoted!
CHANCE A BAD
(simname) goes to the seminar but the career goes unfinished! (simname) loses a logic point for his poor decision
CHANCE B GOOD
(simname) explains to maxis that he cannot make it because he has to keep up with deadlines the manager respects his decision and rewards him with a grant of $50!
CHANCE B BAD
(simname) does not go to the seminar so missed out on meeting lots of VIPs!! lose 1 charisma for his poor decision!
For this chance card your results read level 1
A good + job level
A bad - 1 logic
B good +$50
B bad – 1 charisma
Do this for all levels and then we are ready to start in Simpe!
ARE YOU FOLLOWING THIS? If not reread this a few times until you get the idea,
if so then open up Simpe!
Open up my template: templatecareer.package which is downloadable at the bottom of this thread if you don’t already have it
This is what you should have at the top of the screen!

GUILDS
See superflys cool tutorial here YOU MUST ADD A NEW GUILD ELSE YOU WILL BE OVERWRITING OTHER PEOPLES WORK!
http://forums.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=85728&highlight=guid
ADDING OUR JOB TITLES AND DESCRIPTIONS
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image2.jpg
First click text lists in the first window
(resource tree)
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image3.jpg
Now click text lists in the second window
Underneath in plug in view you should now see this:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image4.jpg
This is where we’re going to add all those job titles and descriptions we just wrote (not the chance cards though, I’ll get to that!)
I have added notes to the DESC box to help you along whilst you’re working, YOU type into the string box.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image5.jpg
but basically it goes
male 1 title
male 1 description
male 2 title
male 2 description … through to ten and then the same with female!
The first box 0x0000 should be left blank!!! (this is for the unemployed option)
Okay are we happy? We’ve got the base of our new career but there’s still lots of work to do!
Save your career.
ADDING THE CHANCE CARD TEXTS
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image9.jpg
ok for this you need to click the text lists which are third from the top in the second window!
The process of adding the data is almost the same as the job titles only we now have a new order
Scroll down to 0x0010 and you should see this text
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image10.jpg
ok! $me is the tag we use to indicate that we want the game to display the Sims name so if we want to say “simname” we type in $me instead, start at 0x0013 and begin to enter in this order:
choice A
choice B
Scenario text male
Scenario text Female
Choice A good result male
Choice A good result female
Choice A bad result male
Choice A bad result female
Choice B good result male
Choice B good result female
Choice B bad result male
Choice B bad result female
And repeat this pattern for all 10 levels!
SAVE!!!!!!!
Done? Phew!
Test at this point to make sure it all works, To do this just add the career to your downloads folder!
YOUR SIMS WILL NOT GO OUT TO WORK YET as the career template is set to 0 hours per day!
• check the Sims can get the jobs (it is random as always on pc and newspaper so either persist or if you use insim spawn the career adjuster and check it appears there!)
• check the chance cards are working properly (I use boolprop testingcheatsenabled true, shift-click a sim and choose spawn, chance card tester but always turn off boolprop: boolprop testingcheatsenabled false)
• double check you’re not overwriting anyone elses work
Is it working?
Yes, carry on
No, make sure you followed ALL the steps above, if you’re sure you did check out the create help on MTS2 for assistance or email me (
[email protected])
Ok you’ve earned a coffee break! see you in half an hour
Once that’s all working we need to change working hours, pay and skill required for promotion ….. I will then move onto chance card results. All of these are very similar to do.
I will start with HOURS OF WORK
Ok we now need to click on BEHAVIOUR CONSTANT (BCON) the first top window
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image11.jpg
In the second top window you will see a long list (89 items in fact)
We will start with Behavior constant – tuning – start hour (it’s the second one down!)
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image12.jpg
The plug in view below should be showing the below screenshot
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image13.jpg
as you can see (I hope) everything is set to 0 (or in hex 0x0000) we need to alter these values but if you don’t know hex DON’T PANIC We’re going to use the dec (decimal) box for this tutorial!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image14.jpg
ok this is really sim-ple (sorry)
in the line box the number is the job level so we will start with level 1 or 0x1 (0x0 is unemployed don’t forget!)
so click on 0x1 in the line box and then click into the decimal box to the side of it (see last pics) type in the start hour (in 24hour time)
***edit*********
when you add the 24 hour time you don't need to add the 00 at the end
For example
2pm become 14 not 1400 (thanks to mode-x for pointing this out! :) )
move onto level 2 and repeat until level 10 is done!!
Now we’ve done that we need to open up behavior constants – tuning – hours per day (it’s the next one down )
Work out how many hours are needed (if you put in that level 1 starts at 9 and you want sim to work till 6pm then its 9 hrs) and add that number EXACTLY like above!
Sorted! You’re getting the hang of this I think … not so scary after all!
Let’s look at DAILY PAY now
Daily pay is the first option in behavior constants (you probably noticed this earlier) and guess what! It’s exactly the same as for working hours!
All we need to do is click on each line and add our daily rate into the dec box
so line 0x1 is level 1 add career level 1 pay into the dec box (you probably don’t need diagrams for this anymore but here’s one anyways )
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image15.jpg
so my level 1 daily pay is $50 ….
Do this for all levels, a guide is that all the maxis careers end with level 10 between $1000 and $2000 per day! (wish I earned that per day …. Lol)
FAMILY FRIENDS
As we all know promotions depend on how many friends you have so that is the next set of numbers we need to edit! By now I’m guessing you know how to do it
The file you need is Behavior constants – tuning – family friends. It’s the forth one down in the list!
Ok so once you’ve done that go on to the next 8 in the list , these are the
SKILL POINTS REQUIRED TO BE PROMOTED
Ok for skill points we need to times the number by 100 so 4 required skill points becomes 400! (in case you’re interested this is due to the learning times, 3 skill points and a half full learning bar would be 350)
just add a number for any levels which you think a certain skill point should be required for each promotion, example if level 6 of your career is chef then in level 5 (0x5) of behavior constants – skillreq –cooking type in (for example, 400) then your sim will need that 4 skill points to reach level 6 .
follow this process for all except the gardening skill (not sure what that ones for as there’s no gardening skill in the game) remember that the more of these you assign for each level the harder your career will become to play!
So now we have a pretty cool career coming along and need to move onto the final step of my tutorial
CHANCE CARD RESULTS
By this point I’m imagining that you may have some idea of how these are changed!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/emma_barrett/careertutorial/Image16.jpg
chance card results are also behavior constants and are located about halfway down the list we want to edit the ones which have the words good or bad in the file name. so open up behavior constant – chance A – good – money
its now time to pull out the list we made earlier of the results of our chance cards.
Start with all the chance A good results and work your way down the list, this can get confusing so I’ll go through it with you for the first one
If on your list level 5 chance card option A good was a bonus of $50 then type 50 in 0x1 dec box and then if level 4 chance card option A good was a bonus of $500 then type 500 into 0x5 dec box and so on
Do this for all the chance card A good files (remembering that skill points are in multiples of 100) and then move on to chance card A bad files. This is exactly the same but remember to put a minus symbol ( - ) in front of the number.
Follow this procedure for the chance card B Good and Bad result files!
GIVE YOURSELF A PAT ON THE BACK!!!!
That’s the basic tutorial done!
Test extensively to make sure it all works and that is it
Once you’ve mastered the basics you can begin to add custom clothing, custom aspiration rewards and all sorts of other nice goodies to your career I HIGHLY recommend superflys tutorials for this so here is a link to his profile, (bow down to the career god!....yes i'm a suck up)

Hi, I am very new to all this so please bear with me :) . . . . I was following your tutorial. However, found you may want to put in an example after "type in the start hour (in 24hour time)" as to me this would indicate entering e.g. "1400" for 2pm!
http://www.modxbox360.co.uk/Wrong.JPG
This is incorrect syntax for SimPE and The Sims (if tested in game). You may want to say something like e.g. "type in the start hour (in 24hour time) i.e. 14(for 2pm), 6(for 6am) and so on..."
http://www.modxbox360.co.uk/Right.JPG
I hope the above makes sence :)
NOTE 1: I have added images to explain what I mean. If you cannot see them follow these links:
http://www.modxbox360.co.uk/Wrong.JPG
http://www.modxbox360.co.uk/Right.JPG
NOTE 2: I cannont see any of the screen shots / pics that you have posted. You may be showing what I have said in these images. However, I cannot see them so I got the error as explained above.
***EDIT***
Emma_Barrett has edited her tutorial with my corrections (Thanks Emma :) )
And I have to say this tutorial is the easist to follow I completed my career (Government Agency - Not available for download) a big thank-you and well done for this tutorial!

Emma_Barrett
23rd Jul 2006, 08:05 PM
yeah it is a package file you need to open it from within simpe
(file,open)
it's the package file which will become your career as you work through it.
if its not opening with simpe maybe it corrupted when you downloaded it? try re-downloading! :)

Do we have to have a chance card for every level because it takes a long time to write them, can we have them just for a few levels?

I agree with phoenix42793. I have only written two levels and it has taken me over a half an hour. I really don't want to write all those chance cards. And they may not even come up in the game anyways(like during the time you are in that level) :!:
If ya could tell "us" as soon as possible i know i would appretiate it:)
Thanks and happy simming! :p

If you want to create something new for the sims, you should do it right. Things take time to do well, not everything on the planet is a project that can be done in 2 hours or less.
Creators often spend days, weeks, and sometimes months on a project. The Simstones project was 3 1/2 months of work by a team of people. I rarely complete *anything* I'm working on in an evening or two - it's often a week or two, depending on how much time I can get.
Hopefully you're working on something you're inspired to do. So have fun with it, be creative, and take a break when you get tired and go back to it another day.

Okay, tiggerpum I really do appreciate your enthuisiasm but this takes a very, very long time. You have helped me before with meshing and even meshing didn't take as long as this. The chance card thing is like a page long of written stuff for a single chance card. But, still no one has answered my question... Do you HAVE to have chance cards for each level? Please if someone can answer the question. Like what will happen in the entering the chance card part of this tutorial if I just enter chance cards for certain stages will blank ones show up in game. Tiggerpum your really smart with all this complicated stuff, would something bad happen if I didn't put a chance card in certain levels?
Emma_Barrett
27th Jul 2006, 12:26 PM
you can do as many as you like but you wont be able to upload here unless you finish it ... careers are based on chance cards and yes they take time! .... my pet care career took me about a week and a half to write but i'm incredably proud of it now its done!
in the template i set up 10 levels of chancecards if you dont fill in the chance card a blank card will pop up insted
phoenix42793
27th Jul 2006, 02:02 PM
oh, thanks for answering my question, I really appreciate it. ALso Thanks for writing this tutorial. i'm just not looking foward to writing lol.
Do we need to have a chance card for tenth level because in your pet care post it said 9 chance cards?
Emma_Barrett
27th Jul 2006, 02:23 PM
yeah you do really need a 10th, i didn't for level 10 because i didn't think it nessasary. that really depends on the career, if you want the chance (for example) that even at the top of the career you can still lose the job then yes put one in! :)
phoenix42793
27th Jul 2006, 07:55 PM
But I mean if we dont put one for ten wont a blank chance card appear.
lil-kisses_xx
27th Jul 2006, 10:36 PM
I finished writing all ten right now..I didn't stop writing them and i am ready to start on the actual career...I am really excited! I hope my chance cards are good though...because i myself have never gotten a chance card :p I'm not that lucky :) anyways thank you for answering my question. I appreciate it.

phoenix42793- in answer to kind of everything, a 10 level career needs full chance cards. Leaving it blank will simply result in nothing showing up. However, career are meant to be read, so not including text seems a bit pointless. Like Tig said, good things take time- no career that I have created took less than two weeks to create, including writing, thinking of things and spell and grammar checking. If you're looking for something that yields faster results, try recolouring or maybe even clothing creation. If you don't have the patience then careers won't be for you.

28th Jul 2006, 02:02 PM
Well, I want to create a new career so I will, I'm new to career editing so I wanted to know what happens if I don't put a chance card for ten , or other levels. Emma said though that if you don't put a chance card in for the other levels a blank one will show up. And your saying no card will show up. Which one is is it.
Emma_Barrett
28th Jul 2006, 02:37 PM
*sigh* if you were building from scratch and you didnt add a card it'd not show up. if you're using my template then a blank one will show!! you could have written the cards in the time you've spent asking questions here.

Hey your tutorial is really good! But I have a question... For chance card results, why, in your example, do we have to type 50 in the 0x1 dec box for a bonus of 50$ in level 5, whereas for a level 4 bonus, we have to type the bonus into 0x5 dec box? Could you please explain...sorry I'm a bit dim...
Edit: I have a second question ... For family friends: if for example I needed 1 friend to get from job level 1 to job level 2, do I type 1 in the 0x1 dec box as for the skill points or do I type it in the 0x2 dec box?
And by the way, did you also translate the chance cards for your own servant career into german? I was a bit stupid and I typed into the English part although I have the game in German :wtf: so when I tried out the cards, I got yours instead...

SimPE is the program used to mod all aspects of the sims 2, and you must have it to mod careers. It can be downloaded from here- http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/. How long it will take to download I do not know- it all depends on what version you decide to install and how fast your conenction is.

Well, in 1st place I would like to say "Thanks" for the users that have spent time making tutorials and helping other users, so people like me, can learn something ^^
But the reason of this reply is a question: I have installed The Sims 2 in portuguese (because I'm from Portugal :D ). So, I would like to know: When I'm adding the jobs and descriptions and also when I'm writting the chance cards, do I have to, beside writting it portuguese, select the language at SimPE?
(I'm talking about the selection box under the box were you can write the string)
(I hope you understand what I'm trying to explain, because I try to remember the words and I just...don't remember  [i think it's because i need to sleep :p ])
Thanks a lot **

Thank you so much! This tutorial has really helped me :). I made a career track from the original games (Im not sure if anyone's done it but I dont think I'll plan on sharing just yet) and it came out great! You dont have to do long chance cards either. I just did the shortest possible :P. It only took me about..5 hours? It's worth it once your all done! Kudos

Emma, this looks like a very useful tutorial, especially with the new picture additions.
I'm working on building my first career and with the help of your tutorial here and several others, I believe it's coming along very nicely.
However, I have a question, which hopefully someone here can answer. Regarding skill requirements, I'm making a career that could easily cover 4 skills (specifically Mechanical, Charisma, Body & Logic). The base game careers only cover 3 skill types while the university graduate careers include 4. Is it possible to make a non-graduate career that uses more than 3 skill types or does one have to make it into a graduate (and thus UNI-required) career? Ultimately I'd like for my career to be backwards compatible and could remove one of the skills if necessary but I'd like to find out beforehand.
Thanks a bunch! :)

Great tutorial, it really helped as I had no idea what to do. I used a combination of this tutorial and Bidou's Career Editor, and everything is done, but I have two problems.
The first, is in Bidou's Career Editor, everytime I try to edit Level 10, the program crashes. It comes up with the message "Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection." All I did was click on the level...
Secondly, once I loaded the career into Sims, everything was fine, except that my person wouldn't get into the carpool. Anyone know why?
Thanks :-)
SuperFly

wildstar24, Emxemx- I'll try and answer your questions as best I can- if my spelling wavers a little, please forgive me- I've been awake for about 16 hours today, and my brain is not quite conencted to my hands.
wildstar24, careers can be made using any number of skill points. If you look at any of my non-graduate careers (i.e. all of them) you'll see that I use at least 4 or more skills in them, and all work fine with any EP combination.
Emxemx, your first problem- how high are level 10 wages? Any value above 10,000 causes errors. In fact, any value that the game cannot process will cause errors. If it's not the wages, posta copy of teh career here and I'll take a peek at it.
As for the carpool.... not sure. In fact, come to think of it, it'd be easier if you posted the file up so that I can tackle both problems at once. I'm a more hands on sort of guy- I find I can solve problems better if the problematic career is on my PC.
Hope I've helped a bit- I'm off for some snoozies :)

ok ... thanks for answering the questions for me superfly i,m afraid i've been neglecting this thred a little! sorry! :( as for bidou's career editor, i had a look at it myself the other day and found the same sort of probs with it so i dont know! as for the carpool ... i noticed on bidous career you can change the carpool and stuff ...did you change that at all? i'm not sure of all the techical side of things so you really are best off posting it to superfly as he's a genius when it comes to careers!!
other than that just generally thanks for all the positive comments and hope to see some great new careers from everyone ... i'll try to keep a better eye on this thred from now on! :)

27th Aug 2006, 06:26 PM
Thanks, I'll put a copy of the career up as soon as I get a chance. My level 10 wage is put in as 1750 in the decimal box, so that should be okay, right?
And yeah, I did use bidou's career editor to change what type of car was meant to come along so I guess it could have been that.
Thank you for the help :-)
Edit: Here's the file :-) I know that the skill points need to be sorted out, I am planning on doing that, but of course, if they're causing a problem feel free to change them. Thank you!

Emxemx, I must say that your problem had me stumped for a while- nothing semed to correct the problem. However, I eventually found the problem- although you have 10 levels, you only have chance cards for 9- that is, there were not enough chance cards to supply the levels. I have added in some new strings, which has corrected the problem.
I can see nothing wrong with the vehicles- try testing your career with no other careers installed and see if that makes a difference.
I altered the skills a little- I don't know how well you understand career skill points, but I'll try to explain how they work-
The skill requirements at level 2 dictate what skills will be needed to advance to level 2, and will appear as requirements at level 1.
For example, if you put 10 body 10 logic at level 8, these would be skill requirements that appear at level 7. This means that any skills put at level 1 have no meaning. Understand?
Also, you may also want to change the image- it's still the one from the servants career, just in case you'd forgotten about it.
I hope I've helped you out here- I feel that this career has a lot of potential :)

Thank you so much. When I finally think up the tenth chance card I'll test it all out and make sure it's okay. I'll let you know how it goes!
I will try the career again with the others uninstalled, but when I tested it the first time, I'm pretty sure I hadn't installed any then. Meh...
And thank you for explaining the skill points, I wasn't quite sure, and wanted to get the other problems sorted before I tried to think about them.
And yeah, I did forget the image lol :-p I won't forget this time.
Thanks again :-D

And I would like to know how to change the type of car that comes to get my sims.
To change the carpool, go to Behaviour Constant, and click on Behaviour Constant: Vehicles GUIDs (Instance=0x0000100C). There you will find a list of alphanumeric characters like this:
*Okay, how do you add images to a reply? The picture's under vehicle.gif by the way*
Let's pretend you want your Level 1 carpool to be Hatchback. Its GUID is 0x0C85AE14. You then split the GUID into 2 equal halves, i.e. 0x0C85 and 0xAE14.
In the plugin view of Vehicles GUIDs, ignore Line 0x1. Lines 0x2 and 0x3 will be the Level 1 carpool, and lines 0x04 and 0x05 will be the Level 2 carpool etc. Each level will take up 2 lines.
Place the 2nd half of the GUID of the vehicle, 0xAE14 into line 0x2, and place the 1st half of the GUID, 0x0C85 into line 0x3. The Level 1 carpool will be now Hatchback!
Do the same for all levels. Basically, place the 2nd half of the GUID in the 1st line, while the 1st half in the 2nd line.
I really cannot remember who uploaded this file, so thanks whoever you are :anime: . It basically contains all the vehicle GUIDs and career outfits GUIDs inside.
How would I go about changing the days that my sim works.
To change your Sims' working days, go to Behaviour Constant, and click on Behaviour Constant: Tuning - Work Day Flags (Instance = 0x0000101A). Ignore line 0x0, and change the values from line 0x1 onwards (each line represents each level of your career).
Make use of this values (thanks Psion!):
Monday 01
Tuesday 02
Wednesday 04
Thursday 08
Friday 16
Saturday 32
Sunday 64
E.g. For your level 1 career, you want your Sims to work from Monday to Friday. So you add up 01 + 02 + 04 + 08 + 16 = 31. Enter 31 in line 0x1 under Decimal box. Do the same for all levels, adding up the different days as you go.
I hope I have helped :) .

Two more questions:
1. Since my career is piggy backing off of another, how do I remove the custom clothing that has been attached to that career, and let the sims go to work in whatever they feel like wearing?
2. Can I kill my sims through their jobs (i.e. if s/he was a construction worker, and a chance card popped up saying that a beam fell on him as a "bad result") by instantly lowering their motives from picking an undesired chance card?
Many thank yous :).

2- You can't do that, but you can make a level of the career that almost kills your sim.

I don't really think so, Pdrs, as the most that the game can do is lower only the Fun and Social needs really really low (till red) when your Sims get fired/demoted, the rest would remain as "normal" if you get what I mean.

Vangaza you may put delta hunger and the others negative, in behavior constant - delta (ex.:hunger): -1000
vangaza
2nd Nov 2006, 03:59 AM
Oh, that one only lower the needs of the Sims every time they come back from work. The motive delta doesn't affect any chance card choices (at least when my Sims are fired when they picked the wrong choice, the Fun and Social are in the red).
You can set the comfort delta to -1000 and the Sim will always come back with red comfort, but it will always be like that every time, whether there is a chance card or not.

No, you cannot kill a sim at work. Like vangaza has correctly said, altering the need drop BCON's will drop a sim's needs, regardless of what cards appear.

Do you have to put the descriptions twice for the same gender?
Quote: but basically it goes
male 1 title
male 1 description
male 2 title
male 2 description … through to ten and then the same with female!
and do you have to do male and female, and if i dont do i just put in the same for both?
vangaza
13th Nov 2006, 02:04 AM
Yes you have to. You don't have to give unique descriptions to both genders. Basically what I do is copy descriptions of male and paste them into the female's. Then I just change the masculine forms of words into feminine forms, e.g. he --> she, actor --> actress etc.

I have been following the tutorial (and Superfly's tutorial on GUIDs) and it all seemed to work but my job won't show up in the game. I've only got as far as the job titles and chance card text but it won't show. (I only have room for 9 chance cards in your template - should I have ten?)
What am I doing wrong?
Also can you make the chance cards to have both choices positive, ie. good and better rather than good and bad?
They have been good tutorials other wise, the pictures really help.

errrm... that might be a silly question, but how can I tell where the male and the female section is, with the new SimPE?
Great Tutorial! Thanks!
Edit: I have another problem. The career won't show up in the game. I don't know if that is the reason, BUT: the file is signed as a DBPF file, but does not have the typical SimPE icon.
The file is also only 67 KB small. Okay, I did not do chance cards yet and I did not do the female version, as I don't know how to do so. I just wanted to test it in that early stage to see, if all my hard work is working ;) (looong job descriptions).
Is this all because I clicked "default" when I changed the language to german? (I have a german game).
Or might it be, because I had problems with the group things? Not the GUILD but the other thing... forgot the name. The Tutorial did not work for me, because the new SimPE looks totally different, and I could not find the fix inte... thing. Would be very nice if someone may help. And please excuse my sillyness and my bad English.

I always thought I was a sharp cookie, but I'm super-confused right now. I sat down and spent a few hours writing a new career in Word Processor and spell-checking it and all that stuff, and now I'm trying to do everything in SimPE.
I downloaded what I assumed to be the blank career package from the bottom of the first post and extracted it to my desktop with WinRar. Then, I opened SimPE and was going to open the templatecareer.package, but I don't seem to have it. The only thing I have available to open in SimPE is TEMPLATE.Adult.package.
The picture posted there of what I should see is missing; I don't know if this is the right package I've opened or if there's something else I should have downloaded and somehow managed to miss.
Help? :wtf:
***EDIT***
Okay, disregard that question...I figured out the issue, but now I've got a different question. When I'm inputting the Chance Cards, There's only room for 9, and I know you said to type in the scenarios for ten of them. So what do I do with the last one?

I've got the same problem too! It can be easily remedified by clicking on string 0x007E and click on Add Strings button. Continue clicking on Add Strings until the last string is 0x008A, and voila! Change card fields for your Level 10 career :D .
Also can you make the chance cards to have both choices positive, ie. good and better rather than good and bad?
Sure you can! Under 'Bad' chance card results, don't enter minus in front of the number, e.g. instead of entering -100 for a lost of skill point, you enter 100 instead.

Guten Tag Swjosdotschka!
For the job description Text Lists, the strings from 0x0001 to 0x0014 is for male, while 0x0015 to 0x0028 is for female. Leave 0x0000 as Unemployed.
For the chance cards text list, it is alternate. Okay, let me use an example. For the Level 1 chance card, the strings used are from 0x0013 to 0x001E.
0x0015 is the text that appears when your Sim is a male. (Description of card)
0x0016 is the text that appears when your Sim is a female. (Description of card)
0x0017 is the text that appears when your Sim is a male. (Good choice of the first button)
0x0018 is the text that appears when your Sim is a female. (Good choice of the first button)
And the pattern goes something like this:
Choice
Choice
Male text
Female text
Male's choice
Female's choice
Male's choice
Female's choice
etc etc etc.
I hope you get me :p.
The career won't show up in the game.
Did you put the package file under the Downloads folder? If you did, then your job probably did not show up on the newspaper on that day. To force your Sims to get the job, enter "boolprop testingcheatsenabled true" by pressing Ctrl+Shift+C. Then right-click the newspaper, and you will see something like Jobs --> Your Job Name (I forgot the option, but it's something like that). Then click on it, and your Sim will be assigned the job automatically.
I did not do the female version, as I don't know how to do so.
You don't have to give unique descriptions to both genders. Basically what I do is copy descriptions of male and paste them into the female's. Then I just change the masculine forms of words into feminine forms, e.g. he --> she, actor --> actress etc.
Is this all because I clicked "default" when I changed the language to german? (I have a german game).
I really do not know how. Maybe you should clear all the fields by clicking on Default lang only button, then go to German, then type out everything.
I could not find the fix inte... thing.
Fix Integrity command can be found under Tools --> Object Tools --> Fix Integrity. Or it can be found under the third pictorial toolbar by clicking on the down arrow --> Add/Remove Buttons --> Fix Integrity.
Hope that helps

AH! I tried that. Then I started up my game and had my female test sim get the job, but when it finally came up in the paper, it offered her the job at level 6 rather than level 1...I know I've done everything right up to this point, so what's the deal with that? It only changed after I added strings.
Also, I noticed when I was testing that when my male test sim accepted the job from the paper, the newspaper disappeared. Is that typical or just some kind of weird glitch just because all the information (pay, carpool, skill requirements, etc) weren't written into the file yet?
A couple more things and I'll shut up, I swear...
1-How do I rename the career? I'm almost sure it was mentioned in the tutorial, but I must be missing it. And everything I messed with to do it didn't change it.
2-If I'm not planning on posting my custom career, do I have to get a new GUID for it? I was curious because when I tried to get a new GUID for it, I couldn't, and I'm really only doing it for me anyway.
Thanks for whoever can answer these questions. I'm really not as dumb as I look!

Err...maybe that's because she may have enough skill points and friends to qualify herself for Level 6 and above, so the game offers her a job at Level 6 instead of Level 1.

Possibly. Try finishing up them before testing again. ;)
1-How do I rename the career?
Click on Object Data, click on the only file there, and rename the initial career name (under "Filename" field) at the end of "JobData - Adult -" to your career name.
2-If I'm not planning on posting my custom career, do I have to get a new GUID for it? I was curious because when I tried to get a new GUID for it, I couldn't, and I'm really only doing it for me anyway.
It's better if you can, because the GUID you might be using could belong to a Maxis career, and your custom career might overwrite it. But I think this template file provided by Emma_Barrett already has a unique GUID, so you don not really need a new one if it's for yourself. Try asking her. ;)

Hi Vangaza!
Thanks for your nice reply!
I tried to get one of my Sims my Job via Merolas Cheatpicture. That picture shos any career in game, but not mine.
I still think it is, because the file is very small (only 64KB, so not normal) and it says it is a DBPF package or something like that, but SimPE does not read it as this file type. When I open it in SimPe I always have to choose "All filetypes" to find it.
I think I should try the career all the way new again and see if it will work then...
Thanks again for your nice reply! :)

This tutorial is great, it's helped me a whole lot. Kudos!
One thing I'm curious about though. How do I get the career name to show up in the game? My career does not overwrite any existing careers but it shows up as Law and Order. In other words I have two careers named Law and Order instead of one Law and Order and one which is named after my career.
EDIT: I noticed another goof. When my Sim gets promoted the "promotion window" doesn't show up. I have to click on the Sim's employment info to see that he's promoted.

This really helped me understand how careers are set up. I was able to make my own, Adult Entertainment Career. :D Yeah, I know I'm sick. Go ahead, get it out of your system.
Anyway, I didn't see anyone point this out, though they may have and I missed it. The tutorial mentions using "$me" as a substitute for the sim's name. When I use "$me" instead of "$Me", the game crashes. It's a drag because I have to do a hard reboot every time. I don't even get to see the error message so I can't tell you what it says. So if your career is crashing the game it's worth checking for $me in the chance cards.

Hi there ... and ... Merry Christmas!!!!
I've made my first career, starting from Emma's Template and it works quite well (many thanks Emma!!!!) ... but my sim doesn't get money bonus when he gets promotion.
He meets all the requirements to be promoted (skills, job performance and friends) and he changes career level without "congratulation" music, without description balloon (of the actual level) on the upper right corner and (mainly) without bonus money.
I would like to point out that this is not a chance card problem. I've not yet created chance cards because I would like to solve my problem before continuing my work.
Thanks for your help.

It really seems like I am too silly to do careers...
How can it be, that strink is from 1-14 if there are only 10 joblevels????
And the other problem is: Everytime I click save or save as, it will save as a data, but not as a DBPF package. So my game can not read the package :(

I got to the part where you put in the job title and descriptions and got stuck. Since you said you type in string and don't do anything with the Desc box, I figured that was where you put the description of the first job in the career. And since I couldn't see any other place, I figured that "filename" was the most likely place for putting name of the first job in the career. (Ex: Dishwasher for the first job in the culinary career.) That doesn't seem to be correct, though, because when I clicked on the next one down (0x0002), the filename stayed the same. What am I doing wrong?

phoenix42793- in answer to kind of everything, a 10 level career needs full chance cards. If you don't have the patience then careers won't be for you.
xD I was about to ask the same thing, but that's more because I've almost given up on the genre my current career is for (a career that'd work for my Victorian females) but I want to see it through, so yeah. Thanks for warning me, Lol.

'File Name' is the title for the job itself, I believe, or the title for the file, I'm not exactly sure which and I'm sure a double-check, for me at least, would explain. xP
In any case, the place where you thought the description goes is where the JOB TITLE goes. One line below it, however, is the DESCRIPTION. I think she explained this thoroughly, but maybe not.

AH! I tried that. Then I started up my game and had my female test sim get the job, but when it finally came up in the paper, it offered her the job at level 6 rather than level 1...I know I've done everything right up to this point, so what's the deal with that? It only changed after I added strings.
Sorry if someone already asked you this, but has your female sim gone to sim-college. Some careers are affected by that. Of course, I'm not very good at custom careers, so this may be a retarded reply. xD Still, in the default careers, then if your sim goes to college, they start out in many jobs with a higher level.

I can't save. Whenever I try to save, the file saves as a .BAK file and I can't open it.
IgnorantBliss
27th Jan 2007, 05:55 AM
The .bak file is a back-up file SimPE creates when you edit your package. The .bak file can be opened by changing the file extension to .package, but it won't contain your latest changes. The actual package file should be the one that's the latest saved version.

I think i've made something wrong...
It works in the game, there are just 2 little things that are wrong. The first thing is, that in the moment you accept the job, you seem to already have the 6th grade of the career. I mean, it shows the title and description of 0x000B and 0x000C. I can't find my mistake.
The second is the upper category. Where can I chance that? It says law for me now, but I want sports.
I hope you understand what I mean ^^'

Ok, many thanks to Emma for getting me interested in doing Custom Careers. I have spent conciderable hours working on this career now and am enjoying the experience.
I have run into a few snags that I just can not find the answers to.
1. I am not sure how to change the category that the job falls under when the Sim finds it in the newspaper or on the computer. Currently, it is set to "servants" career. I see 3 separate references to "servants" in the files, but am unsure if I can change any or all of them without damaging my brain cells with the results.
2. My sim obtained this custom career at Level 6. She is stuck in this level and refuses to get in the car when it comes. The command goes to queue automatically, but disappears just as fast. My sim just stands there and then goes off to do whatever she wants, only to be halted when the Go To Work appears in her queue again.
3. I have not been able to locate where to change the days of the week that the career levels should be assigned to.
4. Unknown, but wondering if it is possible that Seasons EP may be interfering with somethings. Each level tested, to level 3 is showing a GUID error.
5. All chance cards are appearing at every level, guaranteed so far. Promotions are given, with bonuses, regardless that the sim doesn't even meant half of what is needed to advance.
So, short of my current option of downloading someone else's career to peel back the onion layers and see what they did, I am hoping that one of you fine modders has some answers to help me with. I do appreciate all the help that is contained in the forums under the other Career Tutorials, without most of that, I would be in a really tight pickle jar.

I'm almost finished with my career.
And that is when these problems comes up, no-one has asked this before, so maybe I'm just blind (or stupid)
How do I change picture on the career - you know I don't really want the servant pic :D
How do I change the name from TEMPLATE.Adult to my own career name - I tried, but it won't succeed.
Hmm, I think that's all for now.
Thanks again.

you were right when you said it takes a while ive been doing chance cards for the past 2 hours im only on no.4. Or maybe im just slow.
i just noticed that someone else has done a ballerina carrer already i think mine is different is it still allowed?or does it count as copyright
IgnorantBliss
4th May 2007, 04:23 AM
simmy9988, you need to download the attached template from the bottom of the first post in this thread. Save it to your desktop, for example, and extract with a program that can open RAR files. In the folder there is a file called TEMPLATE. Adult.package that you need to open with SimPE.
MewMint20, nobody owns the copyright to all ballerina careers. As long as you make your own career and don't just copy someone else's file, it's fine.

Thank you for the guide, and for answering the questions posed. so far I haven't experienced any problems following it, and am just completing my first career.
The guide was missing the process for assigning days of the week, but I should be able to figure that out.
I had one question though. I was hoping to tinker with some ideas based on what I have read on this thread, and others, modifying the way the career plays, and was hoping a suggestion could be made as to where to go to bounce a few thoughts off people. Being as this was intended to be a basic guide, I didn't want to confuse anyone, or pull away from addressing the issues posted here, by asking these questions on this thread. Thank you for the guide, and your help.

Thanks.

okay,
if you want to change the career name:
in SimPe go to tools (at the top) then click on Bidou Careers..
it should open up a window. At the top of this window it will have the career name, there you can change it from servants to what ever. Also in this window you can select what you want your sim to wear to work and their carpool. this is a much simpler way of doing everything.
I am having the same problem with the no bubble to say i got promoted and no bonus but i am working on it. if anyone knows how to change this please let me know.
on screen shot changing:
click on [U]all res [U/] at the top.
then you will see on the right .img files. right click on the first and third one and select replace. You must resize the screen shot images.
here is a picture to help.

Thanx Emma, this tutorial is really a good start. Easy to follow and not really complicated. But I still have two questions left:
Is there a maximum number of chance cards per level or has it to be exactly 1? I think to add 2 or 3 each level for longterm-fun.
Is it possible to give more than one reward to a chance card? Let's say: Body+1 and +$200 and creative-1.

i'm kind of lost. I'm inputing the chance cards and i started at line 13 like the tutorial said but if i do that i only have enough for 9 chance cards. Is there a way to add more? did i start in the wrong place? I'm lost and the tenth chance card is integral to the storyline for my career. Please help if you can.

I seriously am not following the chance cards part of the tutorial as far as the actually results one gets. It said something about 0X1 was level 5 but 0X5 was 4 or something like that. What does that mean? I'm so confused.
I don't get it either.
Also, how do I have a sim be fired for a negative chance card?

Um...ok. I downloaded SimPE. I opened it, but when I went to open the template it blew up! It stopped responding and I had to force it to quit! I'm on a Dell laptop, and I downloaded all of the things that I needed. What am I doing wrong? Please PM me with help! I really want to start making careers and objects, but I can't with this problem! :(

Okay, so this question has been asked before and I apoligise if it has been answered, I just havn't seen one.
First off thank you for this tutorial it was very helpful :)
I'm just a little confused about the chance card outcomes, in the tutorial it says something like level 5 goes in 0X1 and level 4 goes in 0X5... I have no idea how to make sense of this... haha. So where would 2 go? I would have thought level 1 went in 0X1 2 in 0X2 3 in 0X3 and so on?
Can anyone make this a little clearer for me?
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Okay so I still don't get the card outcomes but I think it'll work out, because I used the career editor on simPE. Now I have another question... haha. Okay so I'm testing my career out and i'm not getting a message to tell me i'm getting promoted... or getting paid, which is kind of annoying because my sim could really use the money! Does any one know what this could be?

Everytime I try to open up the career template, I get a message saying "Arithematic operation resulted in an overflow." Did I do something wrong in my download?
I download the career template in the first post, and the other gets the same response.

Great tutorial so far-- haven't gotten very far, however >.<;
I have a few questions, which might have been asked before, if it has, I apologize, and I realize they might be a bit 'dumb...'
An example given is to write down
male 1 title
male 1 description
male 2 title
male 2 description, etc...
First question. Do I need to include the 'male 1 title, etc...' in the box when I'm typing in the title/description?
Second question: Is male 1 title written in a different 'box' than 'male 1 description?' Right now, I just hit the 'enter' key for that part, having both male 1 title and male 1 description in one 'box.' Please tell me the correct way to do this-- I tried to consult screen shots, but found none showing the proper layout of the boxes with information put in.
Along with this, I have another small problem, which I think might be SimPE related, but I'm not sure. After pasting something to be entered into one of the boxes for the chance cards, I get the following message, which then doesn't let me edit any text until I reopen the file:
"Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.
Index was outside the bounds of the array."
Thanks!

I hate to do this, but I am at my wit's end (which is not hard). The tutorial is very clear and easy to undersand, and the additional files and links are helpful. But I am having a ridiculous problem.
Because I am a pretty fair speller, I started typing in the career descriptions right in SimPE, rather than using Works. My intention was to copy the strings from the male to the female job descriptions, since they will be the same. I was going to do the same for the chance cards, but haven't gotten that far yet.
However, there appears to be no way to copy the strings from one field to another! Usually, one highlights the string, right-clicks, and selects "copy." But in SimPE, right-clicking on the highlighted (or unhighlighted!) string gets me nada. And what's worse, if I do write a description in my word processor and copy it to the clipboard, I still can't paste it into a string in SimPE -- right-clicking is still profitless.
This means I would have to write every job description and every chance card and every outcome twice. Since this tutorial clearly states "write your text in Word and copy it into SimPE," there must be a way to do it, nyet? How? I am using SimPE 60.2.

To copy, highlight the text you want to copy and press ctrl / c on your keyboard
To paste, place the cursor in the box you want to paste to and press ctrl / v on your keyboard :)

I'm not sure since I have figured this out, but...
The Desc box tells you what to put into the string box (e.g. in box 0x0001 it says in the Desc box 'Male 1 job title'. That means that in the 'string' box you put in the title for level 1 of the male job ladder. Then, in box 0x0002, it says Male job description, so you put the description for level 1 on the ladder in the STRING box.)
I hope I've made it clear, and I don't know if it is definetely right, but it seems like a reasonable guess.
EDIT: I just realised it says 'male 1 job title' in all the ones for the male job titles. Don't put in the same job title everytime, I think it' just a typo

Thanks for the tuturial! I'm almost finished with my NCIS career, I'm just trying to fix some problems. For example, in one of the chance cards, the scenario box has expanded beyond the screen. I've shortened the text, but I don't think that's the problem, because I have other chance cards with as much text with no problem.

I've tried my career a few tims now, but I've come across some problems which I don't know how to fix. I was hoping someone could help me.
* When boolProp testingcheatsenabled is activated, I get an error message saying I sent a crappy GUID. I made sure that both the GUID and the GROUP ID was correctly changed, but the message still appears when the cheat is on.
* When my sims gets promoted, they teleport back to the lot without pay or bonus. I had a lot with two sims, which were at different levels on their careers, and both reappeared on the lot when sim1 got promoted. The car, which sim1 drove to work with, didn't reappear.
* The career doesn't overwrite another career, but its still under "Law and order". I've tried changing various filenames and etc, and I've looked everywhere for help, but I don't understand how to change this.
I'm attaching the file with the career, in case some kind person could help me. :help: I'd be really grateful.

Kate_R: Are you opening it in SimPE and going into the exact menues that are in the tutorial? Sorry if I sound condescending, not meaning to - that's often the first problem that people come across.
Lokomotiv: For your career name problem:
Quoted from Superfly: okay,
if you want to change the career name:
in SimPe go to tools (at the top) then click on Bidou Careers..
it should open up a window. At the top of this window it will have the career name, there you can change it from servants to what ever. Also in this window you can select what you want your sim to wear to work and their carpool. this is a much simpler way of doing everything. - End quote
Now for my problem.
I've read through the tutorial (which was very helpful) and all the responses (which answered some of my other questions), and though I believe that this has been brought up, there haven't been any answers as yet.
*When my sim is promoted, there is no notification, and no pay. She just comes home from work, then goes about her business. Haven't had her teleporting anywhere - she comes home in the carpool. *edit: Just read that Superfly is working on an answer, but that was back in August. Has anyone heard an answer?
*With the chance cards, how do you make a negative consequence that fires the worker? I think I've got the promotion/demotion sorted, but don't know about firing.
If someone could help, it would be much appreciated - then I can upload the Prostitute career path. :p

I'm very proud of myself for following so far, but I'm having some problems and I feel really stupid about them.
For one, I'm a little unclear on how to set up the necessary skill point levels. If, say, I want job level one to require one of a given skill point for a promotion, and don't want an increase in that skill to be necessary until let's say level three, what should I do in between, for level two? Do I just ignore that one, or do I keep it at the same skill level necessary for the previous level?
Secondly, I didn't feel like starting up my game to check to see if the career had taken, so I just looked at available careers under Sim Description in SimPE. It wasn't there. Should it have been? Or would I have to try it in-game?
Thirdly, how would I change the career name when I do see it? The only solution I've seen so far involved Bidou's Career Editor. My current version of SimPE doesn't have that, and searching for it has yielded nothing.
Thanks in advance.

First problem: Either one should work. Looks better if you just leave the required skill at a constant rather than getting rid of the requirement.
Second problem: You need to try it out in-game to see if there's any bugs that need fixing.
Third problem: I can't remember exactly, but I think you just select Object Data in the first file-tree, then JobData... in the second (it's the only selection). Then in the Filename box, just change it from Servant to whatever it is your career track is called. I think that's all you need to do.

Then in the Filename box, just change it from Servant to whatever it is your career track is called. I think that's all you need to do. There was no JobData under Object Data, but (since you said you weren't sure,) I clicked on the only thing in there to see. Sure enough, there was a filename blank with "servants" written in it, so I changed it. But apparently, that wasn't it, because after saving, I gave a sim the career and it was still labeled as "servants" in game.
Also, I don't know what this is a result of, but when I sent my sims using that career to work, they all went for a couple of sim hours, but then all reappeared in the hallway two hours before they were supposed to come home. The game told me they had all missed work and that was a bad thing and whatnot. Unfortunately I missed the reappearance because I looked away for a minute, but I know they all went to work because the little briefcase icon appeared in the corner of their icons. Would this be a career problem, or is my game just borked?

i am having this same problem, if anyone can help it would be greatly appriciated, also i am having this really wierd error with bibous career editor, it could be me doing something stupid as this is the first time i tryed using the tool. It says
'Unhandeled exeption has occured in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the aplication will ignore this and attempt to continue
Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: index.'
This happens when i try to click on one of the individual jobs to copy the male description over to female. (edit) i just went through it again from the first job in attempt down to the 10th, i managed to copy all of the descriptions down to job 8, when i clicked on 9 i got the error, tested again and it does the same on ten if i skip 9. Also it then deletes all of the copied blurbs (edit)

After weeks of scouring the forums for an answer, realising that no one had figured one out, and putting various clues together, I have come up with the answer.
I've even tested it in my game to make sure it works.
The problem is that the template has custom content for either the clothing or the cars, and those of us using it to create our own careers don't have that content. Therefore, when the game looks for the GUID of the clothes/cars, it can't find it. This also fixes the problem with the promotions not being acknowledged.
Venganza actually posted the method earlier, but without knowing that it would fix this problem - someone had asked how to assign Maxis clothing in. His post is on page 3, and includes a list of the GUIDs for Maxis stuff - this should fix all the problems.

Don't understand what you're asking in the first question.
For the second, you save the file, then move a copy of it into your Downloads folder and run the game. As long as CC is enabled, you'll be able to use your career.

On the tutorial, before the heading titled Adding Our Job Titles and Descriptions, Emma Barrett wrote something about GUILDS and that superflys’ tutorial should be used. Does a guild have to be used in the career process? Also, I have no idea what a guild is so could someone please explain what it is to me?
K-chan
26th Mar 2008, 06:37 AM
Yes, you have to change the guid. It's the number that the game uses to identify the career, and if you don't change it, it'll overwrite another career. Follow Superfly's tutorial, it's explained well there.

Fantastic guide, right up until the last few lines! Then, it seems a little rushed. I'm ok right up until this bit:
"If on your list level 5 chance card option A good was a bonus of $50 then type 50 in 0x1 dec box and then if level 4 chance card option A good was a bonus of $500 then type 500 into 0x5 dec box and so on"
Er...what? I've been through this entire thread and found that three other people have asked the exact same question, and none of them have been answered. I know Emma and Superfly have not posted here in a year, but does anyone know how you assign rewards and punishments to the chance card choices? I've spent hours writing out all the choices you have to make and the scenarios and I've decided which ones give you money as a reward, which ones give you skill points etc etc etc, but how do I input that into the game? At the moment my chance cards are fun to read but don't effect the sim whether you get a good or a bad. Please could one of you intelligent people talk this poor fool through the proceedure? Many thanks! :-D

Jade28 - it's
[email protected] Scary perhaps, but at least it's original.
Robstainsbury: Let's try an example.
In the behaviour constant file tree, scroll down to the Tuning - Chance ones, about a third of the way down.
Now, say that for chance card 1, the good A result gives $100, while the bad gives -1 logic, and the good B gives 1 creativity while the bad gives -$100.
Go down to Tuning - Chance - A - Good - Money. Select row 0x1, and in the Dec box type in 100.
Go to Tuning - Chance - A - Bad - Skill - Logic, select row 0x1, and type -100 in the Dec box. Remember that for skill points, 100 = 1 point.
Go to Tuning - Chance - B - Good - Skill - Creativity, select row 0x1 and type 100 in the Dec box.
Go to Tuning - Chance - B - Bad - Money, select row 0x1 and type -100 in the Dec box.
Repeat for each job level, increasing the row as you go along.
If that still doesn't make sense, I'll try to find another way of saying it.

Okay I think I understand this but I'm not sure. I think for every 0 in the money amount you put that value in the 0xwhatever box. For example if the sim gets a bouns of $25000 you would put it in as 25 0x3. the three represents the number of zeros in the cash amount. I hope this helps. :)

I followed the tutorial up to the point where you have entered all the descriptions and chance cards into SimPe. The tutorial says to check the game to see if the career works. I used insimenator's career adjuster and it wasn't on there. I also tested the chance cards and they didn't work either. I did create a GUID for the career. next question. when attaching maxis clothing to a career, i assume i use the formula proposed by Venganza in (page 2) for attaching cars but i need the GUID's of all the clothes, specifically those hidden in the cas bin.
if i use boolprop testingCheatsEnabled true + Shift N you get the hidden clothes and when hovering the mouse over the clothing icon it comes up with loads of info, are the GUID's in here? its not labelled very clearly so im not sure but the 0x00 - format is incorperated in with this data. If someone could tell me how to locate GUID's for clothing it would be greatly appreciated.

I've been following this tutorial and have read it many times and so far I haven't had any problems. I'm quite proud of myself actually that I'm making custom content. I've noticed that everyone is extremely helpful and friendly so just brace yourselves folks because I'm sure I'll have questions. I'm hoping that the boxes that pop up with your chance cards "grow" with the amount of text in them because I enjoy creative writing and my chance cards are quite long winded. :)
If anyone does figure out how to use the hidden clothing files, it would be appreciated if a chart were to be made with the codes needed to access them. I've found them in the CAS screen by cheating so I might just peck away at all the different combinations until I find the ones that work. If I do this, I'll definately post them up here for everyone. Isn't that what this is about? Creating and sharing.
I'd like to thank K-Chan for all of the help being offered to us. You really know your stuff. I know, I know, this really isn't a "help me" type of post but sometimes a simple thank you and a "I'm using this with success and I'm having fun!" type of post is a welcome sight. Take care everybody!

Hipy1 - don't use this template as it has custom stuff which then makes the game go spazzy if you don't have it. http://forums.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=49038 - there are downloadable templates at the bottom, all taken from Maxis careers. Just go to Superfly's tutorial http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=147886 and change the career's GUID so it doesn't overwrite any others.
Simaboder - Aaaw, it's nice to be appreciated. And I've been studying programming, so this sort of thing is my forte.
Maemorn - You put the number for the skill level that they need. So if they need to have body level seven, in the box type 700. Does that answer your question?

Thanks k-chan.

No problem.
And it just occurred to me to ask the GUID question over at SexySims2, as they have a 'where can I find...' forum. If I get an answer I'll pass it on.
Edit: Someone nice gave a list of the uniforms GUIDs, thought I'd pass on the link if anyone needs it. http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?p=1933768#post1933768

This is such a good tutorial, but i have a problem.. i'm a little confused.
When i type in a job level, do i type in the level it will go to, or how much the level will go up? That sounds confusing, so, I want to make one of my chance cards in level 5 get them promoted to level 6. Do i write in the box on level 5, '1' (because ithey are going up 1 level) or '6' (because that is the job level they will be at). You included the bit about skill points but not job levels so maybe you should add this to the tutorial!
Thanks!

If they gain a job level you type in 1, and if they're losing a job level, type in -1. Took me a while to find the answer to that too.
Edit: I have some leads with the clothing GUIDs... apparently the binned clothes don't have a GUID as such. They need to be packaged/cloned/extracted/something else first. Once I've got it all sorted, I'll post instructions on how to do it.

Brill, thanks. This tutorial is so good! I prefer makign a career because although it takes longer than recolouring, recolouring can get a bit boring when i don't have any inspiration etc and you can just make a nice outfit. Whereas here i can combine loads of fun stuff with maybe a few uniforms etc. Wish me luck... this has taken me ages!
Plus my keyboard broke so i've been itching to do this for a while now!

*laughs* Yeah, careers take a long time... but if you can get them working, then it's worth it. Good luck!

I would like to work on recoloring some "uniforms" to go with this career and modifying a career award item, but.... before I do I would like to know if I am going to be able to make this happen.
I have spent all day downloading SIMPE and 7-Zip file manager and a Base Career file.rar. I created e 10 job titles, wages, days worked, promotions and the chance cards.
Now I am unable to make SIMPE do what it is supposed to do. I can follow the tutorial for a while but it seems maybe the version of SIMPE I have is newer than the tutorial???
Some times I get a memory error, but my computer has a "shipload" of memory available.
So now that my story is there, the question is, would some one look at my career, tell me if it is ok and then give me some tips on why SIMPE and I are not getting along.
I have been at this all day, so perhaps a little sleep and the instructions will be more clear?

You'll need to post your package before anyone has a look at it, but a memory error is pretty serious, you shouldn't be getting one for something as simple as a career. Which part of the tutorial is failing for you?

One question, Floralulu: what's a '7-Zip file manager'? And why do you need it?
If you post the package here I'll take a look at it for you.

Echo- the memory error occurs when I try to open the career template (.rar) file using SIMPE
The tutorial instructs me to view the data using different tabs that do not appear in my version of SIMPE. The screen shots do not appear to be the same as what I can see.
K-chan I was unable to open the career template file, so after reading more I learned I needed a program to open/manage files with the extension .rar, 7-zip was recommended. From this site ModtheSims2 I followed a link to http://sims.ambertation.de/ then to sourceforge.net I have done a lot of reading but not yet produced a career other than in the word processing stage- from what I have read in the posting guidelines, my career is not ready to package and post.

Echo- in addition once I installed the 7-zip program I was able top locate the career template using 7-zip then choose to open it by directing 7-zip to "open outside" and use SIMPE to open this file. I did not receive a memory error when I opened the .rar files using this method.
