Just imagine for a second... Close your eyes and imagine a world where you have to struggle to put each creation in-game. Imagine there are no tutorials, hardly any tools, and everything possible is done by sheer hard work poring over hex editors in the small hours, hand coding file formats and making the game explode at the slightest change. Welcome to the beginning of Sims 2 modding as we know it, and the foundation of MTS2.

Take a moment to imagine that world and then fast forward 3 years to where we stand today. The Sims 2 community contains millions of players, thousands of creators, hundreds of sites, and dozens of tools, all of them striving forward to produce works that the average player adores and uses everyday in their games to make stories, movies and enter contests, or to simply have fun.

Since that time, early in 2004, we've seen some great creations and some amazing talent from people and groups alike. We continue to push forward the frontier of modding every day, and it is through the tireless work of people in the freely sharing information in the Create section here that we break boundaries and produce things that were previously thought impossible.

It is through the works of a few that this community grows. Quaxi, of SimPE fame, is perhaps the most important of these, since - outside of Homecrafter and pure BodyShop recolours - I don't think there is a single creator out there that has not used his program to import things into the game. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Karybdis and the DatGen people who worked out a lot of the file formats that where later incorporated into tools and plugins. Next, we have Miche and myself, with the very first program ever made to create content with new meshes, utilizing the MeshTool. Following on from that work is wes_h, who maintains the Unimesh plugins for Milkshape, and Skankyboy for his work on the SimPE import routines. Lastly we have the CEP Project, founded by RGiles, Quaxi again and Numenor, whose work is legendary in the entire community, and other creators - V1ND1CARE and her amazing lots, Echo (who is just all round awesome), Boblishman, HystericalParoxysm, J.M. Pescado, Twojeffs, Squinge, Atavera, JWoods, Racquelcaesar, Enayla's wonderful skins, MikeInside's tutorials, and Eric's InSIMenator, to mention a few - who provide excellent work that many others look up to and are applauded community-wide.

Projects such as MidSimmer, SimStones, the Grand Trianon Project, Retroville - these would not have been possible but for the efforts of a community brought together and working for the benefit of all, and to challenge the limits of what we know. I would like to thank LyricLee for her efforts in running successful teams, and Lethe_s for tackling one of the most popular: the Harry Potter Project.

All of these projects, every creator, every person who wants to create - none of it is possible without tutorials. Simple or detailed, from full blown PDF documents to small snippets - everything is available to the person who is willing to learn, and all of it is maintained by hard working and dedicated people who take time out from their busy lives to help others. Tiggerypum, Numenor, Dr. Pixel, HystericalParoxysm, IgnorantBliss, J.Woods - all of these people deserve your thanks, and your praise for the work they have done in helping us all to understand the intricacies of the game that we all love. There are many other people and tools that I could mention, but this community is huge, and my apologies if I have left anybody out.

In the Game Help section, we have people like Simsample, Angel F, Cokenasmile and Daysies (among others), who dedicate time to writing tutorials and providing help on fixing the game when things go wrong. Clearly-written tutorials and FAQs are a staple here, and MTS2 is often one of the first sites to identify problems with the game; witness the various Pets EP bugs and the documentation that we built up to provide help on these issues and then sent to Maxis themselves. This site is huge, and many people spend their time day by day to provide services to others, enhancing the game as a whole.

Above everything else is the desire to expand the community - to break barriers - to do things that no simmer has done before. And it's all built on a framework of helping each other out, with absolutely nothing to gain except for the occasional thanks and the pleasure of seeing somebody finally "get it". We have had people who started out on MTS2 with absolutely no creation ability whatsoever, but they have toiled through the tutorials in our Create section and have risen to produce some outstanding work and gone on to become Featured Creators here. I applaud you all.

The thing to remember about all this - about all the people that I have mentioned, about all the tools that you as creators use, and all the help that downloaders get - is that it's all available completely free. All of the sites that had provided critical breakthroughs in the game (MATY and Insim come to mind) - they are all available entirely for free.

The free sharing of information is key to our ever expanding community, and because of that spirit, modders can break the next big challenge, whether it is to write a better tutorial, to re-organise entire help sections so they are easier to use, to write a hack that removes an annoyance, make an object with new interactions, or a house that breaks all the previous landscaping rules.

MTS2 has lots going on in any given day, as do other sites in the community, but the pervading spirit is of the community as a whole and we are all here - whether you are a site owner, a creator, or a downloader - because of free sites and the work that people I have mentioned have put into them, day after day.

However, not everybody is cut out to be a modder, and not everybody has the patience to go through the great tutorials on offer - I myself have the meshing ability of a small badger, for example - but we give people the chance to really try to see if it's something they want to do; and they can then take the 3d meshing skills that they learn and make a living through selling them legally on sites like TurboSquid or Renderosity. We teach people how to do things well using all the available tools at their disposal, but as a Sims 2 gaming community, and as one of the founding sites within that community, MTS2 is all about free content, free tutorials and free help.

Lately we have seen more and more sites convert to pay only, and while they in themselves may contain some great content, I firmly believe that this community needs to go on as it started - entirely free. The hairs at PeggySims and RoseSims, the Featured Artists at TSR, all the pay content that has ever been made has been made upon the back of a free community and there are always high-quality free alternatives. There are other ways to finance any site hosting costs through ad revenue, affiliate schemes, donations, and funding drives. It is a testament to Quaxi that there is not a single donation link on his SimPE site - and all other tools are produced and distributed entirely for free.

As a site MTS2 has strived to increase the quality of items through stringent moderation, Creator Guidelines for all to read, and through the excellent tutorials and advice that we have to offer. We are, and will always be, FREE. Using the funding schemes mentioned previously, we have become one of the largest sites, and we can - all of us - help others and keep growing. We as a community enable empowerment of the people, and supporting free content is something that benefits the millions of players around the world.

In 2007, MTS2 aims to "go back to it's roots", and make it the Year of the Creator: revamped tutorials, easier to use sections, enhanced uploading options, better searching options and more. We as a site and everybody as a community should always work to produce the best the community has to offer through individual greatness or collaborative projects.

Remember that no matter how cool something might seem, no matter how much pay content other people use for contests, the backbone of this community is based upon sharing. By using and supporting MTS2 and other free sites in the community you are validating all the hard work from people whose goal it is to keep this community growing with amazing content and - above all - entirely for free.

For those of you who don't want to read all that, here's the short version:

Free sites give you:

Tools
Tutorials
Game help FAQs
Custom content help FAQs
Projects (Simstones, Poser Initiative, etc)
Lots and Housing
Hacks and new objects
Clothing and skintones, etc
Hair, bodyshop meshes
Artistic karma
Warm fuzzy feelings

Paysites give you:

Lots and Housing
Hacks and new objects
Clothing and skintones, etc
Hair, bodyshop meshes

Which would you rather support?

PS: This entire mission statement was not meant to guilt people into giving money. Instead, it is meant as a part-history lesson, part-wakeup call for those of you who did not know how this community - this site - came to be, and all the effort put into it from the start. I thank all of you who have donated, but this rallying call is for all of you - those who can donate and those who can't - to realise where we are going and the cost it's taken to get there. Spread the word. Spread the message - to all.

Create it. Share it. Play it.

I'm new here but the tutorials have been extremely helpful so far. This is where I go if I have a problem and this is where I go when I need something. I am starting to make things!
Thanks! I will support the site for as long as I use it and I don't see that stopping any time soon.

Bravo! I doubt that could've been put any better than you did, Delphy! Also a great way to conclude the message sent by all the subtle (and not so subtle) changes that have been going through the community as a whole; free sites do it better *chuckle*

This isn't just about MTS2 though - this is about the entire Sims 2 community as a whole. It's a call for everybody to realise some of the history of how we got to this point, and how we can proceed for the future. By letting people know some of this, and about the tireless work that others do - not just here, but on places like MATY and InSim too - we can help all of you shape the future of the Sims 2 custom content arena as we know it.

Don't just limit your thoughts to us... think about the community spirit as a whole, and thank you to all who read all that. :)

You really couldn't have said it better. Since the time I've been here, I've learned so much from great creators, and love spending time reading the countless tutorials. ModtheSims2 really is the best Sims site ever, and its taken the Sims 2 to an entirely new and better game.

:giggler: If only there was an "applause" smiley, I would love to show my agreement with a standing ovation in this post... Well said, Delphy! I hope that one day I will be able to contribute monetarily to this and other great free sites.

Thanks to all creators, modders, skinners, who have made this site a roaring success! I admit my first full year here was a very "quiet" one, but I appreciate what everyone has done in making all of the quality content free!

Here's to an excellent and prosperous year for MTS2! :Pint:

Today has been a frustrating day for me. While attempting to track down customized content links for a house I've created, I realized that an object had come from a pay site. TSR. How that has happened, I do not know and can only assume that it's because I downloaded a lot that had the object available. However, the object was available only to subscription and rather then put the people who wish to download my lot through hell, I've chosen to simply remove the object. Alas, my frustration has been peaked and in light of recent events I can now officialy say that I understand your comments about free sites. I do not wish to start the old debate pay vs. free, rather I wish to commend you for your eloquent words. The truth never sounded so clear! Hats off to all the creators, helpers, forum members, admins, & so on and so forth! Without you all, my life would be dull and... well, lifeless. :Pint: Cheers to a new 2007 & cheers to MTS2!!!

Very good message Delphy. I know since years that this is the principal mission of MTS2. I also said thanks on contents, the hacks are very good. I also work my 3d skills with the tutorials and share my work to all of you. Its difficult to support, but dont worry. Im saving some cash for a donation. MTS2 is a good site and would still be if all of us contribute with a little of everyone on the site.

thanks for this statement at first
and i also read the short version and that's my opinion also as a site owner that i support free and pay sites too
i have a big free area on my site and a small pay area to keep my page running with the bills i have to pay each month
so nothing is for free and i'm willing to pay some very small fee to support a site that earns it
if someone is willing to donate - it's his opinion and his decision. nobody should only have one choice.
in my case my site mostly runs by its own... that means i have some advertising there and this will also help me with having money for my site bill - like google for example
-------
and mts 2 is a very great community where i had learnt so much so far and i never ever thought i would be like this today when i would think back to that day when i started to create bodymeshes - without all these nice programmes i use so automatically nowadays - my meshes wouldn't be anything without you guys behind all the programmes and behind mts 2
so keep up this forum and this community
i'm very proud that i can present my creations here, too and i can also push my site forward with your help or let me say that i'm able to show my site link in my signature and everyone feels free to click and visit :)
so thanks guys and the sims community wouldn't be so good and rich of downloads without your forum here
greetings from germany, anja

simscorner,

The point you have to realise is that, as a site owner, you do not have to lock anything behind pay or donation sets. MTS2 and the other free sites in this community offer only free items. By using donations, ads, affiliate schemes and other fund raising options, you can avoid having any pay items completely. It's this kind of incentive that puts more great content in the hands of everybody in the community that we are trying to promote here.

If you need any help or advice on how to keep your site afloat or help on hosting schemes for cheaper costs, feel free to ask. :) We are, after all, a sharing community and if we can help to make all content available to all people that need it, thats a win all round.

I don't post much, but . . . This is alway the first place I come to look for an item. The first place I come to find an answer. The first place I come when I'm feeling bored and just want to browse. When I saw how much it cost to run the place . .. . . I figured I could handle the cost of a subscription.

8th Jan 2007, 08:01 PM
Very very well written, and I've actually thought about this the past few days and weeks myself, heh. :)

I must say, I really don't think the community is going to be able to continue on properly unless there is a move for more open, free sharing of information about custom content creation as well as, more importantly IMO, the file formats themselves.

Without this information being freely shared and made available, the ingenuity and creativity of the community will be stifled. So if you have any information about things that you've learned, you should definitely share it! (http://sims2wiki.info/) :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly Delphy. I have no creating ability whatsoever but if I did I would be posting my creations here where everyone can enjoy them, not just the select few who can afford to pay.
But if you're planning on upgrading the tutorials this year maybe even I could become a featured artist someday :)

ill never understand why there are paysites....its justa mesh or some custom object, whereas MTS2 gives you all that an more for a one low price of $0. :-D i love this site, it's like getting expansion packs for free! I have over 600 custom objects/clothes/etc from this site, and it has prolonged my Sims 2 experience. I would have stopped playing it long ago if it weren't for this site.

Delphy is quite modest about his own contributions. Until he figured it out, we didn't know what any meshes looked like except when we saw them textured inside the game or BodyShop. He wrote the first plugin for SimPE that could extract a mesh (even if it was without bones) and write it to an external file in a format (.obj) that could be loaded into most 3D programs.

That triggered an avalanche that now has meshes being able to be displayed, with texture, right inside SimPE, and fully animated objects, hair and clothing being created from scratch. Delphy gave many people who run their own sites (free and pay) a starting space to display their creations and make a name for themselves. MTS2 essentially bootstrapped Sims2 modding by creating a place to share technical information (including the wiki) with others, and learn of new discoveries.

There is still a lot to be learned. I have a few additions I recently discovered on the mesh format I am working on writing up to add to the wiki. I encourage others that have figured out an answer on their own to "seek immortality" by writing their discovery up and posting it in the wiki. You'll be World Famous! :)

I know there are people that visit here who would help get your writeup on the wiki if you can't manage to figure out doing it yourself (it is a different sort of creature from the forums here). So let's just "Get 'R Done".

And a great 2007 to all of you.

First off, MtthwTorrs, You do NOT have to donate, that's the whole point of this site.

Secondly, Delphy, it's a good job I have not got a web cam and this is a "see them" forum because you would have been able to see the tears (only tiny ones) as I read your post, so moving. (God, I'm 54 years old. Pull yourself together man!) This site is the only one I subscibe to (cash wise) ("cos yer worth it." He He) My meshing skills are alot Lower than yours, in fact, they are nonexistent. So, I limit myself to, helping others, where I can and downloading.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. To you and all the staff.
All my VERY BEST wishes for 2007. Keep up the good work.

It is truly amazing this thing called The Sims Community. It is so awsome that people from all over the world have come together to create, share, teach or play. I'm sure I'm not the only one whose life has been changed through The Sims, in more ways than one. Not only have I been a download addict but also a creator because I wanted to give a little back. I have even made some life long friends that I treasure through the community, it's just amazing.
Thank you to everyone who makes up this community!

Well said Delphy!

MTS2, MATY and INSIM have been my favorite sites since I discovered Sims2 a year ago. I'm having fun learning how to create content and I could not have done it without all you guys sharing your tutorials, hacks and mods.

Of course, I started out downloading stuff but wanted to learn how to make my own stuff - and now I am learning and hope to be able to put out quality meshes for those who'd like them. :0).

Once I finally get the hang of what I'm doing and work the bugs out, I'd like to upload some of my revisions of and additions to tutorials that are already here - where I've clarified things for myself and probably others and put in some missing steps, etc.. And, of course, upload my new 'non-exploding' meshes to share.

One thing I'd like to say to all the creators who share their content here. Now that I'm learning how to make meshes, I find that it is very tedious, time comsuming and detail oriented. My respect for you guys only goes up. AND, the fact that you freely share the results make you guys top of the line. :0)

That's quite a motivating speech. Our community wants more for the future, but we never take a minute to look back in the past.

Without these wonderful creations, I'd still be using Maxis-made skins and clothes.

Usually I don`t like "speechs", but this one I read until the end, in spite of, sometimes, need my Webster, to look for one or another word.
You are so right!
All thanks are never enough to measure the delight that those fantastic people gave to us in those "Sims Years".

What an excellent essay on the need for free sites, and a tribute to those who have inspired me and others to modify and create. Their individual stories would probably make a great coffee table book on the phenomena that is Sims 2.
Your Sims 2 site has stirred my creative juices and poured forth an elixir of information to aid me, as well. Three cheer's to MTS2 -- I am happy to subscribe to your fine site! :llama:

I agree with everyone else. Your speech, Delphy is very good. I have learned alot from here, from the best modders, or tutorials on programs. This has been the first sight I seen since I started Sims 2.

From here now, I still hope to create better items, even if it's recolor and learn how to do Meshing in my spare time for everyone to enjoy [even though my meshing skills is down at a worm level o.o;]. :)

Offering my own small thanks to everyone connected with MTS2 for their hard work and sharing of their many talents. It takes a great effort of team-
work as well as dedication. Yet, it's the Sharing that makes it special to so many. To offer a 'thank you' seems small for what all of you do. . . .

... and so instead I wish to say: Thank You For Being You!

When I said I "had the meshing abilities of a small badger" I may have been over exagerating a lot... :)

GOC is right - donations are appreciated, but this is not what this mission statement is about. I didn't really want to turn it into a "hey, donate to us!" thread, becuase that wouldn't feel right. :)

Just take away from this thread a sense of community and of how we can all help to further it's development. :)

Thank you for this wonderful insight. I've been trying to make heads & tails out of all the different websites that I've gleaned from to find the necessary Help that I need & boy was a very happy to find this one but I'm still easily lost & confused by the tutorials. Considering I'm a beginner & most of the tutorials that I find are from the inception of programs that I'm just recently parttaking of...So thank you all for being there for me through this time & hear hear on revamping the site.

Very well-put! I would not have the creative abilities I have today if it were not for everyone's hard work. Before I joined MTS2, I was already able to mesh but would have never been able to put my creations in the game without the tutorials and help from all the great modders from MTS2 and the creators of SimPE. MTS2 is definitely the best Sims2 site on the planet, in my opinion, even better than TSR (for obvious reasons).

MTS2 lives on!!!

Although I have not produced any content for The Sims 2, I do produce 3rd party content for another game, or simulator, called Trainz. Like The Sims 2, Trainz is primarily driven by its community and the content they create. So I can appreciate the importance of this very large, diverse, and vibrant community.

A huge "Hats off" to those behind ModTheSims2, thank you for providing this awesome forum.

I agree Delphy, and there's only 2 sites I subscribe too, and they come somewhat close to offering what MTS2 has, Simslice and TSR.And that's my top 3 in that order as well;every time I go hunting for new things, I come here, then Simslice, then TSR. I don't mind at paying for the latter two, for more content, but here, yeah, where else can you get anything you might imagine? To me, MTS2 is to Sims 2 as the Simtropolis site is to Sim City 4; the Ultimate, no holds barred, hands down best site for the particular game.

no-one could have said it any better i acctuallly like to thank people like Tiggerpummy and HystericalParoxysm who take time to write the tutorials as if it wasn't for people like them, people on this site and others wouldn't beable to make all the neat custom content we find on free sites and also i would like to thank quaxi and wes_h for the tools we all take forgrante when we make a new mesh or are just playing with the texture on an object on if it weren't for you this site and free sites like heleane wouldn't be here i agree with everybody with the fact mts2 and some other free sites ROCK!!!

As a birthday present I received the Sims2 PC. I always liked the Sims for playstation2, but I heard for PC is better. So, I tried it. Although, I am still quite new to the whole Simming experience. I am so elated I found MTS site. Your site is why my Sims2 game is so great and full of life. I know that without MTS I would not have invested so much time into my game. Seeing as they had all this nice custom content to choose from, I couldn't wait to try it out in my game. I pretty much download from MTS, but occasionally I will read some of the tutorials. I learned how to install custom content to my game from the tutorials. Thank you MTS. I truly cherish your creators for all their hard work. I think they are the most amazing people with so much patience and creativity. I want to thank all of the staff and anyone else I forgot. MTS is the best site for the Sims2 hands down. Keep up the great work. RayB. :)

I only did the first draft this morning, then we went through as a team and tweaked it and moved bits about and generally got it up to scratch.

Yes your are right Delphy. Free sites (and MTS2 specialy) are a key to open the sims 2 game to millions of persons without any wealth's restraint or any conflict (with some parents for example). We just need an internet connection and after that we can add tons of wonderful customize content to our game. We can learn to create (even if I'm a bit newbee I learn here), we can improve ourselves with sharing our creations. I don't understand all here but it's the world best place I have found for the sims 2. :lovestruc

Simply, I like this idea of "freeness" and of sharing. It's too rare in our world unfortunately. So keep going Delphy, you and all MTS2. I think we will have a splendid 2007 year here. Thank you very, very, very much ! :)

Delphy, you have expressed clearly what I have been feeling for a long time; MTS2 is by far the site that I prefer.

Free sites give you:
Warm fuzzy feelings

I am feeling that right now!

Very well put, glad you made a statement about this free community.
Alot of people don't realize, that this site just isn't a place to find free goodies for the game, most of us wouldn't be able to create anything for the game at all if it wasn't for MTS2!

I could barely recolor an object when I first came here, but thanks to MTS2, I can now create whatever I wish (well, almost, lol) and I can finally give back after being a download-aholic myself. I will continue to support in anyway I can.

Now that you have put it in my head, I don't think I have ever really said thank you to you Delphy, for this wonderful free place, and all the others who put time and effort into the programs, tuts, ect. Especially to those who I've bombarded with question after question over the past year in the Create Section, lol. So:

Thankyou! "Hugs*

When I started with Sims 2 I thought it was great and I started looking around for download sites. Most of them either caused a virus or was a pay site. When I came to MTS2 I could not believe it. If this site wasn't created Sims 2 would not have made its sucess.

Thank you so much. Everyone that has answered my questions and who has made MTS2 the best

8th Jan 2007, 09:26 PM
I've donated to pay sites from time to time and I remember thinking one day - MTS2 doesn't require you to pay and MTS2 is amazing. I have a ridiculous amount of download and quite a number come from here.

Not on that but the quality I can find on this site is amazing. There is a certain large pay site that shall remain nameless that has a huge amount of downloads available but also has a huge amount of junk downloads where I feel like unless I know specifically what I'm looking for or if I'm looking for work from a particular creator that it's a waste of time to go searching there it's just too big.

My favorite thing about MTS2 is the feedback from the community. The only other amazing site that I can think of, off the top of my head so please forgive me if I left out some sites, is More Awesone than You. The creators here, the quality of the creations and the feedback from the community is why I keep on coming back here.

So I was ashamed. I had subscribed to pay sites that did not compare to MTS2 and I had the ability to contribute to MTS2 but because there was no requirement to do so I was able to let it go and think, maybe next time.

Once I was hit with that realization I knew as long as I was able and as long as MTS2 is around and I still flirt with the Sims (right now I'm prettty addicted to WOW so I do more downloading than playing Sims right now, actually, that's pretty sad) I am going to contribute. I may not be able to contribute top dollars but if I can do a little something to help then I will.

I want to thank MTS2 for helping me clothe and house my Sims much more fabulously than MAXIS has, sorry it's true. I am able to have Sims and homes that are distinct from one another. And without people out there willing to dedicate their time to making my life and other lives enjoyable I would not keep on coming back to the Sims.

I would like to note the only negative thing I would have to say is what appears to me to be the increased use of recolors or packaged Sims with body parts from pay sites. You see I'd rather have artists created something amazing from themselves or the amazing content that is out there that is available to everyone. If a recolor or Sim is packed with meshes from pay sites then if someone wants that item bad enough and has the abilty to do so they may agree to pay for a month or whatever to get that item yet they will still come back to MTS2 and get hundreds of other downloads but they will have given their resources to a pay site. Now don't get me wrong there are sites that offer donation gifts that offer so much more free and great content that I don't hold it against them. I just hope the community will support sites like MTS2 that offer amazing content as well and don't require you to pay at all for anything.

Now I know the Mission Statement was not about rallying people to donate but I have to say this as a member of the MTS2 community. In this issue and in life in general it is much easier to sit back and let others do what needs to be done. It's easy. It's painless. So why make the effort? Why go out of your way when others will? For those thinking that I will say: ask yourself, what is MTS2 and other sites like it worth to you? Have you paid for any stuff packs? How many items did you get? How many items do you get from MTS2 or other sites that don't require you to pay? Now think about that and think about whether or not you can miss 1 fast food meal a month or hold off on bying a CD or 2 12-packs of soda or not buy 1 magazine this month - because those are about the prices for starting donation requests.
If you are financially able, especially if you ever purchase stuff at pay sites or have purchased a stuff pack, ask yourself if you can spare some dollars to keep the site welling well for all of us.

I think MTS2 rocks, I think the speech i.e. mission statement was great Delphy. Mts2 is the number one site for me, personally, I visit it daily. Second is insiminator. Paysites are like going into the candy section of the store fancy boxes, lots of sugar, but this site is like a many tiered cake, that you cant get enough of with many layers to explore all the time. Thank you Delphy for keeping MTS running and free, thankyou to Numenor, and everyone. I think the new users to sims is picking up, and I suspect Seasons will bring in more, so it will great for them to have this place to come to. :)

Great words Delphy,
I agree with you at about 250 %

I just add

... thanks to anyone, as I wrote yesterday in a PM, I was proud of my first download, of my first "thanks" like I am ever proud of each some thousand later.
It is because we are modding, siming, meshing, building, downloading the one for the others not for money but for our own pleasure to share our talent or our knowledge. If nobody use the creations we made do you think that our game will be like it is today ?
So I say thanks all ...with a bigger one to Delphy and the MTS2 staff :)

Great, Delphy, it really sums up what this community is about. This place is great, the best Sims 2 site I've seen. All the modders, texture-ers, meshers, tutorial-writers, lot builders, programmers, scripters for the site, moderators, chat ops, everyone, thank you! Delphy, your words made me put together some pieces of a bigger puzzle...
Atavera has recently quit modding because he felt sick about the modding community, that is every day more "pay-oriented" - if we can say so.
I myself can't help but shiver with annoyance every time I recognize in a TSR Featured Artist, or a new paysite owner someone who learned (for free!) everything he knows here at MTS2, or that I've personally helped with his creations, and now he gets paid for them!
How different is the current scenario, compared with the one we used to know two years and half ago (when I joined MTS2)! And I'm not only talking about modders that move to paysites: I'm also talking about the adventurous spirit that animated us while creating the MeshTool, SimPE, the CEP; a spirit that it's hard to find today, where thestress is put more on the final "product" than to the "process" that lies behind it. I'm talking about the collaboration we used to have with the Maxoids, the thrill to have a recolour package created by me tested by Maxis' engineers (at 3AM, local time :P ), the total co-operation we established within the Dream Team while creating the Grand Trianon, each of us actively working on each piece of the set, and not just putting together items autonomously created by each modder...

Times have changed, undoubtedly, and I don't deny that sometimes I feel like a dinosaur (this perhaps explains why I enjoyed the Simstone set so much! ).
But your poem (errmm... I mean your post :P ) has put everything in the right perspective: past is past, but after all we still "feel the thrill" when we break a boundary, learn a new thing, and realize that with our help or our creations we have improved other people's gaming experience.

This "thrill" is the common trait that joins all the free sites, and that pay sites will never experience.

Oh, and BTW, isn't it silly to pay for something you can get for free? ;P

I have enjoyed this site for over a year now and hope everyone keeps up the great work, it makes the game so much better. I can see this going to a point where the game will look absolutly real, that is if maxis and ea games will stop trying to block custom content in the game.Great work and thanks to everyone who has contributed.

Thanks for the history lesson; I didn't know a lot of that, and it was interesting and important.

I am continually amazed that people with such outstanding abilities use them for The Sims, which -- however great it is -- is just a game.

Thanks to all of you for all you do.

Well said. I, too would like to add my thanks to all the free communities out there but most of all to MTS2. It's certainly a one-stop-shop with everything you need at your fingertips. The tutorials have been of great help, particularly the technical ones.

I applaud those creators, admins, writers who have contributed such wonderful content to enhance gameplay.

I cannot express all these feelings that came to me at once while I was reading your speech. I cried, I smiled, I guess you can say my cup hath runeth over. This site has always been there whenever I needed something for my game. I love my game, but I love it even more because of this site, and other free sites I signed up for. Thank you, everyone, for making this possible!!!

I agree I don't think anyone could have said it better. It was through you and thru sites like Spiffy Sims and Crystal Clear Sims that I got my start meshing. (although I did get my start recoloring thru TSR). But I firmly believe that it should be free...and I thank you guys tremendously for all the help that you have given me personally over the years I've been a Sim addict.

Thank you Numenor, for such an excellently worded post. I, too, remember those days and I am pleased to have been a part of that. It's not to say that those things are dead - in some cases they have simply moved off of MTS2 and onto places like MATY for example. MTS2s role has shifted somewhat with the changing times, and hopefully we can get back to some of what once was, but with extra new shinyness. :)

Bravo, Delphy! I don't think anyone could have put it into any better words than that. The whole point of creating for the Sims is being able to learn, and to have a little fun while doing it: and beyond the price of paying for the game itself, it's all supposed to be free. It's nice to see that MTS2 recognizes that, and I'm looking forward to this year being the Year of the Creator. One of my New Year's resolutions this year was to begin teaching myself how to create custom content beyond lots and houses--and I am encouraged by the fact that MTS2 is trying to help and support everyone with the same goal.

Thank you for all of the hard work that you and everyone else has put into this community, and for all of the work that you will continue to do in the future. :)

Having MTS2 available has helped me so much with playing the wonderful and engrossing game of The Sims2, from the amazing content available to learning and understanding (trying to) just what goes into the creation of said content! Thank you for being here and for vowing to continue on the path so far blazed.

nb--This has got to be one of the most organized and clearly understandable sites I have EVER visited---many more thanks!-

well said Delphy, well said. While I know some of the creators out there are honest folks, it is very easy to cross that fine line when you generating income and when there is no real disclosure of where the funds go. This is why I go to this site (& snooty sims) only. I very rarely go beyond MTS2 because people are willing to help and share and all in all a lot of fun. I applaud the admins & mods at MTS2! Here's to another strong year!

Without CEP and CC the game would look so lame... And CEP is created here at MTS2!

After reading your "Mission for 2007", I will not be renewing any of my memberships to many sites to which I belong. Your statement made it very "Clear" about what are sims "community" is! You are correct in the fact that when I have a problem with my game, or want to know "how to" do something, this is the FIRST place I go and ALL of my answers are ALWAYS answered here! I love it here and I appreciate each and everyone who takes their "free" time to create and make more awesome content for us! Hi Delphy,

I've been here nigh on since 2004 although under another alias and I truly adore this site and all the of the talanted artistic techies I so much truly appreciate the hard work precious time and devotion and endeavors that go into all of the sims2 & 1 communities. BELIEVE me when I say this I PRESS that thank you button before I download anything or even if I don't download. Their is a strong love for the game and it shows because this community has expaned and as you say will keep on expanding. You are right about the pay sites and it's a crying shame because If it wasn't for the FREE tutorials (of which some are in other languages!) and programs that has evolved from MTS2 they would not be able to offer the content they have created. So I say Power to the MTS2 community and I rather donate to such a site as this. Thank you so much for your eloquent reminder of the root cause of the expansion of this community.

Kudos to all the free sites but this is the only one that gives me the warm and fuzzies! Thank you guys for everything you do. I probably wouldn't have played for more than a month without custom content. EA Games and Maxis ought to thank you too for that very reason. Just think of all the people who have become addicted to The Sims because of you. Thanks again to all of you creators who are so talented and motivated.

Ya know, this is a great site with lots of great downloads, but I would like some easy downloads like where you just click on the download package, then it asks you if you really want to download it, then when you download it it says that it was sucess fully installed.

I am a tried and true lurker, but feel this is the appropriate podium to just express loads of thanks for the whole team that is the Sims 2 Community. Usually, when I see a topic like this, I sigh and say to myself, "Uh-oh. They're switching to a paysite, too." But, I am always delighted to see that MTS2 sticks to its principles of a community of players. A while back, I made some recolors just to test the creation waters and found it more than ridiculous that I could not share the few things I did make with friends because my uploads were set in the subscription set. Personally, I think sites that run on ads and donations alone show just how great a product they are giving. It is one thing if someone decides to pay for a download, but it is something entirely different when one likes what a site has to offer so much that they just give funds to ensure more creations are made. Cheers to MTS2 and the free Sims 2 gaming community!

Thank you so much for the support MTS2 :) Whenever someone asks me how to make objects or custom content, I lead them in the path to www.modthesims2.com, lol. I know it's the right choice and it's well worth the visit. Congradulations on a great Community and making other sites become born because of the work done here to give everyone else what they need. I might not be able to do a whole heck of a lot creatively with the game, but what I do know I would have never learned without this site and its amazing tutorials. I love being staff here, adore the people and look forward to learning and growing with you all. I hope this encourages even more people to try their hand at creating things for themselves. I know I was overwhelmed at the thought of it - but once you start you realize how easy a lot of the basic stuff - like recolouring - really is.

Those of you who haven't taken the plunge and started creating - go ahead and do it. You won't regret it!

Thank you Delphy for continuing to maintain this site for free so all these resources are available for everyone and anyone and for reminding us all of what this community is really about.

Well said Delphy, i love this site for downloads you can search for any object and its much easier to find and it's free. I do not get the point of paysites either, i'm put off the minute i see a donate button on a site. Delphy, you have the true spirit of community. You sincerely care about sharing and helping others. Anyone that stays a paysite after reading this post, is truly in it for the money and not for the love of the game and community. You have offered your time and knowledge to help people run free sites....if they choose not to accept your generous offer, than, we, as the community, need to choose not to subscribe to them. Thank you and thank you to all those you mentioned, and, may I add MaryLou to the list, her talent and community spirit have been a real plus to so many of us. You have all made my game worth playing!

Since, this is the year of the creator and all, I think that some recognition is in order. Some encouragement to everyone to make objects and clothing. From personal experience, I can tell you that I always look at the little featured item badge by people's username with envy. I feel that all creators should get a little badge like that. Not necessarily the same one, but one that is suited to their accomplishment. Like if you make a new mesh, you get a mesh badge, one for bhav editing, recoloring, and so on. And to make this process faster, you could automate it by adding a script to the new upload page. When it identifies you and realizes that this is the first new mesh that you have uploaded, you get a meshing badge, and the same with all aspects of modding. This works, because you always have to specify what tpye of download it is that you are currently uploading. You probably won't ever do this, but I feel that it would be another reason for new creators to emerge and another thing to seperate us from the paysites. Then people will come here and share, rather than pay an arm and a leg for the same things. Just a thought.

PiperK1980
8th Jan 2007, 11:27 PM
AMEN!!! All sites should be free. Why pay for something when you can either 1. Make it if you know how, 2. Request it from someone who takes requests or 3. Forget it. I have tried since my aunt go into The Sims 1 to not pay for content. She still does to this day with subscripts to TSR and 8th Deadly Sim. I personally wouldn't pay for those items, and I didn't have to. I have access to her accounts. I think that if a site is going to require you to pay, they should do it in year increments. They need to have advertising on their site to help pay for well over half the costs and just charge 5 bucks for a year. They might end up getting alot more subcribers that way and it would even out.

I will NEVER pay. When I go looking for downloads, I come here first. I'm on here more than I play the game!! I'm sure I'm not the only one either.

I'm glad to see that MTS2 is moving into the new year. I can't wait to see the changes that are going to take place.

Finally, I would like to thank Maxis first for making a great game series, every creator on this site for their hard work and wonderful content and last, but not least, MTS2. This is a rockin' (did I really type that) site and will continue to be a member forever if possible.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!

I use this site everyday and other free sites. I class myself as a beginner although I have played now since sims 1, but in that time I feel part of a community and want to take this opportunity to say thanks to fellow simmers the world over.

I may even start on the tutorials xxxx

This always has been, currently is, and shall always be THE best Sims 2 site in the entire world. I entirely appreciate everything the talented creators make and do for everyone. And the fact that it's all free still seems too good to be true. (but of course it is) So I say thank you to you, Delphy, and everyone else who works hard to provide the Sims 2 Community with the best of service all for free.

Long live Mod The Sims 2!  :gjob: :D

P.S. Great speech! :anime:

Yes, thank you very much for all the hard work you do, MTS2!! WE LOVE YOU ALL... Without you, the games wouldn't have that sudden new flare you can get when you do something as simple as downoading one file.
Thanks again...

This is the best site I have found for sims 2 stuff to downlaod. I wish I had that creative bone to design a few things myself but I am not creative. I enjoy everything on this site and I let my friends in on it as well. Mod the sims is the best site.

This is the reason why so many of us are happy to be part of such a great site ... I love MTS2! And thank you for providing us with free goodies ... some of the stuff here is way better than things you find in other sites and there is such variety. The creators here are also talented and open minded.

Almost all the downloads in my game have come from this site. And I only follow links from this site. So thanks to all the creators and the moderators.

Yaaaaaay!!! *Claps loudly and loudly!!!!

I agree whole heartedly. I only make my sims stuff so that others may enjoy it. I don't do it for the pay! I just love to share, and I love to see if I can do these. It's a challenge for me.

I hate it that others are wanting to be pay sites, and I don't support them. Creation has no price!

OK, now I feel guilted into actually creating something cool and uploading it here in exchange for everything I have learned from this site over the last couple of years...

I will have to see what I can come up with...

It's sites like MTS2 and the sense of community I see here that makes Sims more than just a 'game' :)

As someone with ZERO creative ability, I have to say: YAY for the free sharing of ideas and creations!

THANK YOU!!!

:D
