View Full Version : Help needed for making a "wall board"

I'm not sure what it's called or what i should call it, so I'll just call it a "wall board" and describe what it is as best as i can. I'm making an outside grilling area (see the picture) with first a foundation and then 1/4 of a wall. It covers 2x2 squares. Then i have tiles on top of that, and finally I've placed the 'Brand Name MetalKettle' grill inside the wall with the move_objects cheat.
The problem is that the sims can't grill through the wall, so i have to take it away. My idea is to make a "wall board" that covers that place and the sims can grill with no problems (they can go through it if placed elsewhere).
Now i know that MTS2 doesn't take requests anymore, so I'll try make the item myself. But i am new to making items, so it won't be that easy to start with. I'm wondering if someone would like to help/join me in making it, or any other support you can give me.
The sims have to be able to walk through the item, and it has to be 1/4 of a wall high (foundation high) and a square wide. I'm sure i can handle the making of the mesh etc myself, but when it comes to making it walk through-able I'm not sure. If anyone knows that this already has been made and is free to download somewhere, please tell me (i haven't found any myself).

We have a tutorial on object creation here: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=104795
I personally like Milkshape best for modeling. It's $25 and well worth the price. Go give that tutorial a try - make a table as shown in the tutorial. Once you do that you'll be a lot more prepared to do an object. When you've done that, try making another table, and maybe a chair. Then try your board thing - by that time you'll be a lot better prepared to try such a project, and you'll be able to ask specific questions when you get stuck on something.

OK thanks for another quick reply! (Have never experienced quicker replies on any forum) So I'm sure its possible to make my board walk through-able (or whatever its called)? Is it hard to fix or is there a tutorial for that as well?

Yup, entirely possible. There may be a setting on the object to do that, or you can clone from an object that will allow it already (like a rug, or something that hangs from the ceiling like one of the plants). Someone with more direct object experience (I mostly make clothing and hair) may be able to offer you a better suggestion on that particular point though, but yes, that's entirely doable and should be relatively easy, as properties go.

OK. It has been over a month now, and i nearly haven't done anything of the tutorial because i have seasons expansion so SimPE doesn't work. Some annoying error pops up.
But i have been thinking about how i can make it. I have been searching for something like that on the web, but i haven't found anything, not even some sort of wall that hides it, or a picture that is on the floor.
Now in my mind it sounds really really easy to make if you just modify a already existing item, like for example a, what's it called? Those tiny fences you usually have around flowers, and just resize them to make them bigger. Or you could take a picture and moving it closer to the ground.
But of course, i haven't even seen the inside of the programs yet, or even tried to make it myself (because SimPe isn't working). I would be glad for any more advise you can give. And last, I'm wondering if there is anyone who wants to make this, it doesn't seem hard. I know you don't take requests anymore so don't take this as a request, take it as a tip instead, because there isn't a single item like this (at least not that i know of) and I'm sure its not only me who wants this.
Then i would like to thank for all the nice stuff in here, all the great tutorials and the inspiration i get each time i visit this place! Thank you!

Sia Creations,
it's entirely possible to mod with Seasons. The warning you get at the beginning is just that: a warning. Just click 'yes' to proceed and go about your business.
I wouldn't personally use a fence, since since won't be able to grill through it (i think, have you tried placing one of the small ones in that place?)
Wouldn't use a plant, either, cause those don't normally hang outside and you'd have to use 'move objects'.
By far the easiest way to do this, would be to find a one-tile rug and remesh that. It'll have the right settings for sims to be able to walk right through it, or grill through it.

Thanks for the quick reply.
No the warning is not at the beginning, it happens when (following the tutorial linked above) i press the 'cGeometryDataContainer' button. A window pops up with an error, something which i don't remember now, but at least i couldn't proceed with the tutorial. Now i know enough about computers to know that the error message wasn't usual... like if you get a message that says "The string at 83bsa32c23 does not match the preset value at 82c2nc234". I'm sure SimPE doesn't think that people understand messages like that, and therefor the message is not supposed to be there.
But enough of that problem, I'm sure it will be gone after they have made it compatible with seasons :)
I have tried with the small fences and yes they grill through it, but the only problem i can see is that the grill becomes a "one time use" grill. When its totally new they can grill, but when they are finished the hood doesn't close and you can't click it anymore. But maybe it has something to do with the combination of small fence + half way through the next level with tiles on it? ^^
And about move_objects, remember that there are two levels there, so i have to use move_objects if i want something to be on that tile or i just get 'sealing to low'...

It's not a Seasons compatibility issue, it's most likely a lack of managed DirectX. You can find a link to download that at the SimPE download page, under needed software to run SimPE.

Ehh, i don't know what to say. Why didn't i find out about that myself? Well thanks Bliss, it works now :)
I'm surprised how easy it is to make something, but maybe it's becouse i am working with 3DS Max at school :P Done two of the legs now ^^
