View Full Version : Downtime yesterday - Cookies, Downloads and Thanks
Delphy
18th Apr 2007, 10:54 AM
Hi All,
You probably all noticed the downtime yesterday. As I mentioned in this thread (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=227928) I was going to carry out fileserver maintenance, however due to last minute bug fixing on the DDO, I didn't get a chance to do so. I pushed the maintenance forward, and carried it out yesterday.
The following was done:
Removed traffic throttling modules on the Apache servers Chii and Freya, and instead moved the throttling down to the ethernet layer. The upshot of this is that there wont be any more 503 errors, however, under high load situations you may experience a delay in getting files as before.
Added a module to Apache to stop download accelerator programs from completely leeching all the slots and bandwidth. See note below.
Re-enabled the check for a valid MTS2 cookie login for getting files from the servers. See note below.
Updated the Thanks counters to generate the correct number per user, thread and total number of posts thanked.
A note on download accelerators:
Badly configured download managers try to grab the same file once a second or every 2 seconds, and every single attempt uses slots on the fileserver, preventing normal downloads from starting and completing. Looking through the logs I've seen the same person attempt to grab 4 or 5 different files every second or two, which is unacceptable. We do not have lots of servers, or unlimited bandwidth.
From now on, any download accelerator requesting more than 1 file every 2 seconds will be blocked from any further downloads for a period of 60 seconds.
A note on cookie errors:
As mentioned above, I have re-enabled the cookie check for downloading files from MTS2. This is to prevent leeching of our bandwith by external sites and unregistered members. All MTS2 cookies should work across the entire domain of *.modthesims2.com, however if you use some extra security or cookie blockers, then downloads from files.modthesims2.com will fail.
If you have issues downloading and get the nocookie page, then you may check at http://chii.modthesims2.com/test.php - if that script reports that you have no MTS2 cookies then you must look on your system for how to fix it.
I will not be disabling this functionality since I believe it is in the best interests of the vast majority of members that they get fast, quick and non corrupt downloads and for the extremely small minority that might have issues, often only small changes are required to get it working again.
Summary:
The upshot of this work is that, with the traffic limitation in place at a lower level, and with extra blocks for leechers, this should give a much faster and more efficient download service to our members so you can all get the custom content you want. :)
Regards
Delphy

I am happy to see leechers and download manager thing taken care of. I look forward to improved downloading. Thanks a ton. Is there any way to temporarily ban or block people who will still try to do both or either?

Ah good! That is what I meant-the people who would not give up.

As I mentioned, people who attempt to leech are disabled from downloading for 60 seconds. People who just wont give it up are then permenantly banned from downloading by the firewall. :)

Ah, I'm also glad that the 503 errors should be fixed...
It was never too much of a hassle, but it did get tiring having to hit Back and refresh the pages over and over again before I could download some of the files.

No cookies found!
No valid MTS2 login could be found. Please note that you must be logged into MTS2 to use this server. If you are logged in, then make sure you aren't using any kind of cookie blocker, like Norton Internet Security. Try allowing "files.modthesims2.com" in your security software for cookies.
It's like this just like you said. What should I change to be able to download again?

Please tell me how to fix it (...) What should I change to be able to download again?
You could just try this: In Internet Explorer 6 or 7, Tools, Internet options, Privacity, Sites, and add new site, i.e. *.modthesims2.com. Accept. Please note I'm translating from a Spanish Windows system.
To Delphi,
as always these improvements are for good and greedy people will have to take it easy from now on... Thank you!

Will Q-Express be affected by this change?
Mind you, avoiding the 503s was the main reason I had for using Q-Express, so it's not that big a deal if so...
EDIT: Well, I suppose I could have just tried it before asking, but where's the fun in that?
Anyway, Q-Express seems to work fine (I've noticed a tendency for it to choke while unpacking .rar files, and spread their contents to random corners of my computer instead of my download directory, but that's obviously a separate issue). Without having to worry about 503s, I'll probably only use it now to avoid having to click on 20 different eye colors or the like in cases where no single file download is available.

This sounds like a wonderful thing to update...but I am having problems downloading now...I checked everything you said and got this message..."Detected MTS2 cookies ok. You will be allowed to download from the server" but I went to download the cep and I can download the manual but not the auto install, I get the no cookie message, Is there anything i can do about this? I can download about half of what I try to get...and what is leeching?how do i prevent it?

OMG!! Chii and Freya!! Excellent choice for server names! :D (I love Chobits!!)
You say that "badly configured download managers try to grab the same file once a second or every 2 seconds" ...How can we make sure our download manager isn't configured to do this? Would the setting for this be obvious in the settings for the program? ("Spam server with file request once a second"? LOL) I use one occasionally to download a long list of files one by one, but I want to be polite in doing so. ;)
Delphy

Any issues with downloading will be one of the following:
- Your PC is not sending the correct cookies to the fileserver
- Your PC is blocking cookies
- Your work firewall or proxy server is blocking cookies
- Your personal firewall or security software is blocking cookies
In all cases it is usually something at your end that is causing the problem. All the servers do is a very simple check against the cookies you have for your MTS2 login, userid and password.
A normally setup PC using either IE or Firefox will work fine (as my machine here, and many others, do). Only if you have strange or otherwise incorrectly configured security in place will you have issues.
lostndreamz, I have no idea why that happened but it's been reported in the past (although I have not witnessed this behaviour) that when the servers get really busy they can erroneously give out the message. I was just able to download the CEP fine, so I suggest giving it another go.
silverdreams, Either use Q-Xpress, or set your Download Manager to get 1 file concurrently and to only retry every 30 seconds or so. Many download managers are setup to retry only after a few seconds, or to try grabbing the file in chunks of 4 or 8... this is bad, mkay?
Hope this clarifies things.

Love this site.. however i'm still getting 503 errors and they seem to be somewhat worse than before. I only use firefox/IE, have never used any download manager so it can't be that, what is causing the problem.
Also i have noticed that the save box seems to be taking much longer to load up than before. I have to click the link, and then go off and do something else as it takes so long that i would just be sat waiting otherwise.
I'm not moaning as even getting the files eventually is good for me, however i thought you might need to know, if only for your own records/knowledge that i am also one of the ones still experiencing problems.
I would like to say thank you for all the great work you do here, this truly is one of the best sims 2 custom content site i've been on. I only wish i could stop downloading so much as my game takes an age to load because of all the fab stuff i have haha! :D

skyphoenix, if you have only those 4 cookies then you are missing the critical ones - mts2userid, mts2password and mts2username - which would explain why you can't download. :) The download servers check only for those cookies, no others.
Claire DC, the 503 errors will occur if you attempt to get files too fast or try getting more than 2 files at a time. As for the longer time to wait - yes, that'll happen, but as with everything, you either get constant 503s or longer timeouts. Since pretty much everybody complained about the 503s, I changed it. I personally have checked the fileservers multiple times and have never gotten a 503 error.
Remember, folks, only 2 files simulatenously allowed from MTS2!

I don't know how that works then as i am sure i haven't been getting more than one or two files at a time.. and i don't try and get them too quickly either. I am being totally honest here and would not have even mentioned it if i thought i was doing either of the things you have mentioned, or using a download manager etc etc.
Take for instance the fact that i tried to download my first single item of the day today.. and have got the error. So i don't know how it can be said that i have tried to get things too quickly? Like i said i'm not moaning, but just wanted to inform you that there still are problems with downloading and errors, even for people who aren't abusing the system or rushing to get files. :)
Ps, i quite liked the quirky counter.. was quite fun to pass a little time trying to guess what number it would come up as when i clicked the thanks button haha.

Claire DC, exactly which error did you mean? A 503 error or a cookie one, becuase they are 2 different things. :)
It's 503 and also i get this quite a bit:
'Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. '
Which i have just got when trying to download one of bruno's dress sets after not downloading anything for a few minutes (as i am also playing poker) and i also receive a lot of time outs when the download is taking too long to start.
I did check the test link that you put above and that said everything is fine cookie wise apparantly.
:) x
Edit: just noticed it was 503 page i pasted, have gone off the other page now so will have to re paste it in when i get it again. x

This is all great news about downloads. However, it is rather a moot point if I can't get to the download pages. I click either "download" or "game mods" and I get the typical "internet explorer cannot display the webpage" message. Is this an isolated error on my end, or are downloads down temporarily for some reason?
Delphy
19th Apr 2007, 2:10 PM
Lupus, the download servers aren't offline - I just checked them.
Claire, the 503 error is the same as the Service Temporarily Unavailable one. What ISP do you use? AOL?
Claire DC
19th Apr 2007, 3:06 PM
Yeah i get another error aswell, but i'd copied the 503 one earlier and mustn't have pressed control and c properly to copy the new one so pasted in the 503 instead. It's why i edited later on as i didn't realise at first. I haven't really tried to download anything since so haven't had the error screen i was talking about to copy and paste in for you. I do sometimes get a full screen of jumbled symbols appear if i try and refresh the error page to start the download too.. i'm not sure if you're aware of this?
I use NTL as an ISP (it's a cable broadband though).. would never EVER go back to AOHELL lol. x

A note on cookie errors:
If you have issues downloading and get the nocookie page, then you may check at http://chii.modthesims2.com/test.php - if that script reports that you have no MTS2 cookies then you must look on your system for how to fix it.
I've been having intermittent problems with downloading since you did this. It didn't work the morning of the 18th, but it did work later that evening. Tonight it's not working again.
I'm running Firefox v2.0 on Mac OS X v10.3.9.
I'm not using any cookie-blockers.
I allow all cookies by default.
Just to make sure, though, I manually added "files.modthesims2.com" to be always allowed.
I read your response in comment #38 to skyphoenix. I'm also missing the three "critical" cookies.
I tried the test link, and it says "You have no MTS2 cookies set." But, at the same time, Firefox says I have 5 cookies from ads.modthesims2.com and 8 cookies from modthesims2.com.
I was able to download tonight by using Safari 1.3.2. Oddly enough, Safari got the missing-cookies message two nights ago, when I was able to use Firefox.
I'm very confused by my on-again, off-again download ability. I haven't changed any preferences since the first time I got a missing-cookie message.
Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this?

Hi,
I was getting the 'no cookies detected' stuff - I use Firefox and have Norton on board. I read Delphy's advice about which cookies are needed to enable downloads, and guess what, Firefox didn't have those cookies logged.
I found the problem............ I hadn't enabled my log-in status to 'remember me', which obviously stores the username and password cookies.
For those still struggling with downloads - make sure you keep the check box ticked that enables username and password to be REMEMBERED !
Good luck
Thank you Delphy for giving this advice :gjob:

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you for pointing this out. Maybe I missed it somewhere in all the technical talk but it seems to be the missing piece for me.
Just a note that while I understand that this is a free site and you don't have to do it and I appreciate the HUGE amount of work that must go into this, it is frustrating when changes happen for those of us who can't afford internet at home and therefore do not have an unlimited amount of computer time. Some of us simply have to settle for what time we can get on a library computer and that time then seem extra precious.
Thank again for all the work an help Delphy and everyone else.

I get 503 errors when trying to download.. and another one that i haven't had for a while. However the 503 errors do occur quite frequently, and even if i haven't been on MTS2 for hours or more, and am trying to start off my first download, i still get them. Also my browser doesn't allow me to download more than 2 at any one time, so there has never been any possibility of it being that either.
I do get to download some things, so it's not like it's never letting me download anything, but it is happening more often than not.
The message i pasted into my last message was what the test said about my cookies being ok.

Well i say what i did maybe it might help some of you, i went to the site (this site) and i was already signed in.. so then what i did was log out.. after i logged off it said "All cookies have been cleared" So then i closed my browser (firefox) and then i re-opened my browser came back to the site and re entered my password and name and checked remember me.. and then it started working fine :)

well now i feel stupid. geez some of the most difficult things have a simple solution. i just don't like stuff being remembered since it is a shared computer. and i don't trust programs to get rid of everything.

Hi there,
I just been introduced to Sims 2 and while searching the web for some custom sofas, I came across this site.
I'm registered, able to post (obviously0, have Remember me set to on and indeed I no longer need to re-enter a password to log back in.
Can you get to http://chii.modthesims2.com/test.php
Clicking the above gives me the Detected MTS2 cookies ok. You will be allowed to download from the server responce yet when I click on a download link, an example being the CEP 6.0 automatic install via the link on page http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=92541 I get
No cookies found!
No valid MTS2 login could be found. Please note that you must be logged into MTS2 to use this server.
Reasons for this not working are:
* If you are logged in, then make sure you aren't using any kind of cookie blocker, like Norton Internet Security.
* Try allowing "modthesims2.com" in your security software for cookies.
* MAKE SURE you have ticked the "Remember Me" option when logging in. If you do not, then you will not be able to download.
Using Firefox 2.0.0.3, my cookies are as follows
modthesims2.com:
mts2accesslevel
mts2sessionhash
mts2username
mts2password
mts2userid
mts2lastactivity
mts2thread_lastview
mts2lastvisit
I have no restrictions on cookies set and yet I still can not download anything though the test.php says i can.
Any help would be welcomed.
Regards,
G

O.K., after being delayed a few days by life and weather and checking into things regarding firewalls posted here I think I have a solution to the download problem I encountered on my last visit and tonight. Norton firewalls require a valid IP# for the website when you want to add them to the safe list, so I would need an IP# for files.modthesims2.com to enable cookies on the Norton firewall. Is this something that can be posted publically or e-mailed to Norton users to try to enable the cookies here on our systems?
Thanks for any help. I was wondering about all those 503 errors I was getting and I can see why you'd like that to cease immediately.

I got this year's Norton and I do, don't know what year (or version)you have
The quote when you try to type in a website name? "Must use a valid IP# such as 192.168.1.1". Basically, this feature keeps the 'spoof' websites off of the safe list that can possibly get through with just a typed address.
So you can't add any site as safe to my Norton's firewall unless you have an IP number. "hmmm" is all I really have to say to antiquated firewalls that do not have this additional safety feature. :wtf:
Does anyone in admin have a useful response to my query on IP#'s, please? I'm really not sure how disbursing that info works, but you can check with Norton first if you have a question about this and really doubt my word. I'll try to get the exact product info before my next visit if that is needed, but I'm pretty sure Norton would know if they have this feature on some firewalls or not, eh? Thanks in advance. No rush, I understand the life-delay thing, I've been running into that alot too lately. :)

Just for information:
In case if you have Google desktop search.
I'm using a Google desktop search which I think will affect Firefox internet browser.
Even though I've have Remember me? checked, I keep getting the log in message box whenever I click on download or to go to new page.
Have it disable & solved the problem. ;)

When I press "Thanks", I DECREASE people's thanks counts! ;p This happens almost every time I Thank someone, but it's usually a different negative number each time. I hope they see an increase of +1, not a decrease of -N.

I can't download. I enabled cookies from MTS2 along time ago and it still won't work unless I use that program to download which sucks because sometimes I don't want to install everything in a package. I hate this because it was fine when all I had to do was refresh and it works but now I'm getting piss off because no matter what the test says.....cookies are always enabled from here

Try logging out and logging back in again while ticking the Remember me option. Also, read back in this thread for some other solutions.

Heyy everyone!
I'm new to the whole MTS2 website, so I don't have a clue.. I have just noticed that I can't download and that I'm getting the Error you're all talking about: "No Cookies Found"
I have looked through the forum, but I can't seem to find information for Safari users. I have ticked the "Remember me" Box, so that can't be it, and in preferences I've set it to "always accept cookies"
can anyone help me? Plz PM me, for I'm not sure I'll be able to find this forum again hahaha!
(I know it says Im male on my profile, but yeah Im a girl, and not the computer type, I just love the fashion ;) )

I just can't download anything from this site . I keep getting a page that says I must be logged in . The MTS2 no cookies message .
Well I have enabled all cookies for this site , added it to my trusted sites which turns off Internet protected mode , ticked the login box so that it remembers me . I've even allowed pop-ups but it still re-directs me to the page that says I must be logged in !!!
What more can I do ?????

I've just found out why I couldn't download , the MTS2 cookie is a HIDDEN FILE. Now that I've changed my folder options to ' Show All Files ' I am able to download at last . If anyone knows how to make the Cookie visible , because there isn't an option in Properties , please let me know .

I have a problem when downloading larger files (the small ones seem fine)
e.g. Firefly Class Clean.rar ...6.92 MB..It goes through the motions of downloading, then around halfway stops and says download completed !?! I don't have any accelerator software installed. I am using Mozilla Firefox as my web browser. Could someone please help me to understand why I can't download larger files??? (B.T.W. other sites I don't have any issues with downloading!?!)

Hey, I'm getting the no cookies found error too- I went to that checker website from the first post, and it said I should be able to download from the server. So does that mean the problem isn't my computer?
I use a mac, and I've never had this problem before...

Thank you Simplyfier for your post, that helped me to finally download a file. I could not find "remember me" til I got fed up and tried to log out... lol even that was a journey. I hope this is sticking to the thread, first time here and so much to read just to get started  . But I have to admit I like the format of MTS2.

I finally fixed my problem. :p It was a cookies setting...I tried everything you guys said and nothing worked until I changed a setting in my Browser. I went to Tools-->Internet Options. Then I went into browsing history--->Settings. I found that my Temporary internet files has the option to check for newer versions of stored pages...The option was set to never...so I changed it to always. I don't know much about changing settings, but this worked for me.
Finally! That did the job! Now I can download again. :anime: I don't think it will work for everyone, but hopefully it might help someone. I was getting frusterated, but I can see how this leeching prevention was needed. Thanks Delphy...You seem busy! LOL great site!
