I am a Cultural Anthropology major (CIS too... Computer Information Systems)... as such I have a fascination with language and language acquisition. Each culture I have studied thus far has different ways to socialize children. (I have other cultural things I want.)
I'll give you what the game gives and how that relates to the White Middle Class and what I'd like to see as a Mod.
In the game the child learns to walk by the parent teaching them and giving them lots of attention. The child won't shut up until you give them attention. In fact the game will take away your child if you don't give them love. You are supposed to become best friends with your child and be a friend to them. You are supposed to help the child with their homework and the child asks to be read to. You teach the child how to talk by sitting down to their level and talking to them in babytalk. The interaction between sims is always one on one and the parent directly helps the child to grow up. All of these are signs of White Middle class. I have no objections to this fact--I kind of expect it.
However I'd like to try other socialization models within the game to experiment and have it correspond with influencing the child's personality and studying abilities. Let me give you an example...
I one study I read the children are not talked to, the need high amounts of what I would coin in game terms as charisma. They play in large apartment buildings in LARGE groups, 5-6 children. Interaction is always in groups so the child that speaks promptly and with the best language skills gains the floor and respect of the other children--they get to be the leader. The parents talk *around* the child and this is how they learn. They are only paid attention to fo basic needs until the can speak competently. Books aren't of emphasis. Often older children will take care of younger children. The groups are mixed with the girls ad often with the boys can reach 10 or more to conduct sports activities like baseball.
For that sort of thing I need the children to learn language by *hearing* the sims near them speak it. For them no to demand attention and for them to be able to walk on their own. For the adult to refuse to bend down to their level and even be disgruntled by it. Through talking gain charisma skills and skill points for that cultural group ONLY. Outside of that cultural group people will think they are incompetent, stupid even with linguistic innovation and they will struggle with written homework.
I also know other modes of child rearing and the associated classes and social groups that employ it... Korean, Japanese, Samoan, American Working class, Suburban class... and somewhat of Chinese, and one Native American group....
Each group would need a set of ways of rearing the children and new choices.
Is this kind of modding possible or is this a new EP pack for Kids? 'cause there are other culture-related things I'd like to do to the game too.... (Like third gender like the Berdache or of Albania (women act as men)) I want to see how the various cultures interacting and using these modes of communication at different levels would turn out. I saw this complaint from a Korean woman who disagreed highly with the game's model of soialization. Shewanted kids to be able to take care of infants and make food... when I was 5 years old I was taking care of my brother... but that's normal in my culture.
If we could set social class awareness within the game besides marrying a sim, now that would put me somewhere to a perfect Sims 2 game. (Minus not being able to go to work and school with a sim)
I'll give a loose list....
- Talk around child (increases their charisma and speaking abilities...)
- Study for final exam. (Increases their school abilities, but make it super hard and HW required to pass)
- Junior HS exam. (Japanese/Korean/Chinese school system. They have to study for it for say 3 days straight and it lowers their bar while they stress out until after the exam.) College exam too. Maybe attach it to a function of Uni? They can't grow up until they complete this. (or they face all of their social relationships going down by say 10 points)
- Children can take care of toddlers and babies mod. (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Samoan, and to some extent American Working class)
- Bring home more than one child from school and very little interest in toys.
- No reading option.
- Child hates imagination and creativity, they abhor it... and want to spout facts instead. (Suburban)
- Earn respect icon rather than friend icon. The child act subserviant to parent. The second level would be something like, recognizes elder. (In Korean society the respect elder would have to be built in toddlers and by the middle of childhood or they will be dysfunctional...)
- The child is not attention getting mod. This would be when they are on full stats, they don't cry, but you can choose things like listen, calm down, study surroundings, sleep. Based on what you choose you can increase or decrease their skill or personality set... or by how QUICKLY the parents respond to the child.
-Finally awareness of money and social class of other sims,/snubbing for it... (For those of you who are British)
Is that too complex set of Mods? I want to fool around and see what kind of adults I end up with. It's useful also for creating your own culture. At least I'm not asking for forager or horticultural or tribal groups =P.
