If this has been noted previously, apologies.
Problems with unzippiing .zip files or unpacking .rar files?
Try using 7-zip. No more Winzip or Winrar needed. Really.
1) It is free. No limited trial versions, no hoops to jump through, just the whole program.
2) It works.
Since I've installed it, haven't had a worry or a problem about unpacking most any type of compressed file.
It resides here: http://www.7-zip.org/
Download and install it.
Once it is installed, just right-click on any .zip or .rar file (or highlight entire groups of them and then right-click on anything in the group, even a group with mixed types of files).
Choose '7-zip' 'from the right-click menu, then click on 'Extract Files' in the next menu.
Choose 'Browse' from the box that comes up (the button may just have 3 dots rather than the word 'Browse').
Go the the folder you want the extracted files to live in from the box that will appear.
Click OK.
Then (if so inclined) double-check that the location for extraction shown in the location bar is correct (if you don't know how to do that, click that address to highlight it, then click again to de-highlight and press the End key on keyboard, which will move the cursor to the last part of the location you chose so you can make sure it is the right folder, and if so click OK.
That's it.
7-zip will self-close.
Faster and less clicking involved than most such programs.
Have no financial nor any other interest in the program - just have enjoyed this site so much since joining that I wished to share at least something as a small bit of thanks.
