View Full Version : Red versus green... the ultimate clash!

I thought this was just an issue with my computer (and its lousy graphics card), but Phaenoh checked it out for me, and it turned out to be more than just my old computer.
The plumb-bob on the red version of my toddlers' sports outfit (seen here (http://linna.modthesims2.com/download.php?t=311675)) looks pixelly around the edges. It's fine in Photoshop. Only the red version has this problem. Phaenoh suggested that I try importing the Photoshop texture in SimPE with BuildDXT, but that didn't help, either. It looks pixellated in SimPE, too.
Any ideas what's causing this? (The Photoshop files are in that thread in post #14, if you'd like to see what I'm talking about for yourself.)

Try to save in .PNG, not .bmp, and re-import usind BuildDXT (if you don't did this, of course).
And, maybe, make a new recolour of the green and try to use the same texture or just change hue/saturation/light to do the new one.

I already tried the reimporting thing. Many times.
And the texture for the red and green is exactly the same (aside from the colour). The problem only arises after importing (either with Body Shop or SimPE).

So strange. If don't work creating a new recolour, I can't imagine what happened, sorry. O.o

Weeeeeeeeeird. I fiddled with it a bit and the only way I found for it to not get all weird and pixelly is to bump up the size to 1024 x 1024, which is a bit much for a toddler outfit. It ended up still looking a bit blurry, but I imagine that might be because I don't have the original source images on hand.

The original images can be found here (http://nene.modthesims2.com/download.php?t=311675) (go to post #14).
1024 x 1024 is an option, I guess. It's only the red one that's the problem so it's not like I'd be adding megabytes and megabytes of stuff...

When you do BuildDXT, do you use DXT3 or DXT5? 3 is usually fine for clothing. 5 is higher res, but bigger, of course, if I remember right.
Do you compress your file with the Compressorizer? If so, are they blurry before you compress them or only after? I'm guessing after.

I suspect the green works fine and the red doesn't because the compression algorithm is probably compressing stuff that's close in hue / saturation / lightness. Note that the red background and black plumbob outline are closer in lightness than the lighter green background and black plumbob outline. I bet if the green shirt background were darker, you would get that blur, and if the red were lighter (or more orangey yellowish), you would not get that problem, but then you wouldn't have the shade of red you want. Try making the plumbob outline on the red shirt a different shade of "black". One that's maybe a really dark green or dark blue or dark purple? The point is to make the compression algorithm think it is different enough from the red that it shouldn't munge them together.

I tried DXT5 as well. It doesn't seem to make a difference.
I didn't use the Compressorizer at all on these. The pixellation shows up before that point anyway. As soon as they go into SimPE... pixel city.
I guess I'll have to try changing the colour of the plumbbob or the shirt and see if that helps. Thanks!

Just change the color of the *outline* of the plumbob from black to reeeally dark green, on the red shirt. The inside, green part of the plumbob is fine, it's just the black outline that's being blurred.
Or change the shade of red of the shirt, as you said. Something lighter will probably work better. I like the red you're using though. ;)

For what it's worth, I've run into similar problems and it was also with a diagonal line on what was essentially a rectangular part of the mesh (I never solved it).
When I opened your outfits in bodyshop, they're actually all a bit pixellated on the model, but you have to look really close to see it. Part of the reason is that the pixellation that appears to spill outside the outline of your plumbob design on the yellow, blue and green versions is the green from inside the plumbob.
If it's the mesh warping of the texture that's causing this effect, it would make sense that it affects the red the worst as the red and green combine.
I agree with CatofEvilGenius that changing the background will help, but I believe it's a red/green issue not a red/black one.
I'm not even sure if what I said makes sense.
Sorry I can't offer any actual help, but I figured I'd share my observations.

Neder You could be right about the red/green, those two don't blend well. Perhaps make the plumbob outline *thicker*? Separate the red/green more?
