View Full Version : To delete or not to delete. That is the question

I have heard many people say that they delete Maxis neighborhoods like Strange Town,Belladonna Cove and others. I never really understood why though. They say that their game runs a lot faster then it used to. Maybe because I have a really good computer I think its silly. But I never do play many of those hoods. So what is your interpretation on this?

I deleted all the neighborhoods since I don't need them and they were just taking up space on my hard drive. I'm playing HP's uber megahood (which is all of these neighborhoods put together as a single neighborhood).

If you look at the timestamp after you have finished a play session, every neighborhood in the game gets updated when you save and quit. Deleting them all really did save me some time loading and saving, especially when I ended up with 11 neighborhoods before pruning them. It also cut down on having to turn on slowmotion 3 because that was the speed it was running at anyway.

A fast computer won't notice the difference much, but on a slower machine it does help. (And for me, turning the music off before I quit also helps the loading time a bit.)

I have heard of the mega hood, just never knew what it was. Is it on mod the sims?? If you wouldn't mind, link please.

I wonder if you, who have deleted, think there actually is a significant difference in speed, ex on start up? I have all the EPs with respective neighborhoods, but I only play may own selfbuilt one (with selfbuilt sub hoods), - some neighborhoods I've never visited, not even once! But I am a bit reluctant in general to delete anything original in the game, I'm afraid I might f... up something. Did you hav ANY problems at all after deleting? Or should I just go ahead? *preparing the sledgehammer*

Seeing as I have all eps and I don't play the Maxis 'hoods, I delete them so I don't have to scroll past all of them to get to my custom 'hoods.

Speed differences will depend on the computer. If you are running on minimum specs, you will probably notice a difference. If your system is powerful enough that it can run the entire game with all EPs and 12 G of CC with minimal load times, the speed difference may add up to a second or two.

I never had any problems that were related to deleting neighborhoods. (Bad CC and conflicting hacks, on the other hand.... I'm in the process of trying to figure out why all my vampires have fangs that flash blue now.)

Sure - get the uber megahood here (http://www.modthesims2.com/download.php?t=301194).

Thanks Sidney/Ghost, the computer is strong enough and running fine, even if I am a download junkie (but not with 12G CC, OMG!), so that leaves actualy the lack of scrolling benifit, like velvetmagras mentions. Which is kind of annoying, extra mouseclicks anyway.
I bite nails everytime i download, keep it in a separated "Try out" folder, and so far I've been lucky, I guess, except for some always flashing accessoir. For your vampire, their fangs should flash in RED at least... (I know, off topic now...)

Seeing this thread tempts me very much to delete the Maxis neighbourhoods. I don't play them, only my own custom hoods, and my laptop isn't powerful so I would probably see much better loads.

Once you've deleted them is there a way to restore the Maxis neighbourhoods?

Yup, if you take out your current neighborhood folder and keep it somewhere safe, the next time you load the game, a new neighborhood folder (with all the original neighborhoods) will be re-generated.

My computer is okay, definitely outdated. I deleted just one neighbourhood, Veronaville and I have noticed a difference in load times.

I use to take the community lots I like from the Maxis hoods and put them in my custom hood but I always delete the Maxis hoods because as it was stated by someone else above, my game is installed on an older laptop. The free space definitely helps loading time as well as turning off the music that plays in hood view. :anime: I don't remember having had any problems with deleting the hoods as I learned a long time ago when I install a new EP the Maxis hoods are reinstalled as well.

I use them, I find it hard to get things started when you have nothing at all

I deleted Pleasantview so I wouldn't be tempted to play it - I wanted have a fresh start this time around. And then I deleted the rest because I didn't want to scroll to get to my custom hood ^^; This computer is a lot faster than my old one, so I didn't really see any difference in load times when I did go into a few times Veronaville (it was between it and Belladonna for my fresh start, and then Bella ended up winning... went back a few times to check out the lots, though).

I deleted the Maxis 'hoods, because I never touched them anyway. They were just pushing my own neighborhoods to the second page.

I was playing on a mac and read somewhere that there is a limit on the number of neighborhoods that you can have on the mac version, so I just developed the habit of deleting any neighborhood that I wasn't using.

I also like to create my own neighborhoods with small lots and houses and a minimum of stuff. I've never had trouble with drag on my PC (an old dell with 512meg memory and a slow processor so I guess this practice helps.

I'm interested to read this thread...because once I deleted a neighborhood and it renumbered all the files in my other hood and everything got all f****d up royally and I finally had to re-eliminate my custom hood and reinstall the Maxi hood....:o

I delete Maxis hoods almost immediately (after I test hacks in them after a new EP is released) because I don't play maxis sims and the buildings are normally atrocious. I have about 3 or 4 hoods of my own that I move between another folder and the hood folder depending on what I plan to play that day. Makes a world of difference.

Not only has deleteing hoods helped with loading times, but fewer hoods in my hood folder prevents my graphics from blurring an hour into gameplay.
