View Full Version : Have you found "easter eggs" in the game?

Have you ever noticed the little jokes, references to history, and mythological references in the Sims2?
For example, there is a statue in a house in downtown - the house of Fallen Trees - of a woman, I believe it is called The Grey Lady or something similar. In the item description, it details the story of the woman in the statue, and ends with something like "and that is why no toddler or baby can die in fire." I loved this quirky comment, which provides a supernatural explanation for something in the game which is not how things are in real life.
So, has anyone else noticed something in the Sims2 which you may not notice at first glance? Feel free to provide pictures! (But please only when required).
Be it in an item description, a Maxis building, family tree, a Sim's memory, a pop-up or mix them all together to provide a fuller explanation of what happened... Tell us about it here, fellow easter egg hunters!

Here's one I noticed a long time ago. The description of the Will Lloyd Wright Dollhouse:
"This marvel of dollhouse design is meant for children to act out fantasies of controlling little families. This incredible replica comes complete with amazingly realistic furniture and decorative items. Don't be surprised if hours upon hours are spent enjoying this little world."
This seems to me like a reference to the game itself!

To add onto Purple Paws' Easter Egg...'Dollhouse' was what the Sims was called when Wright pitched the idea to his superiors.

One thing is that in the CAS for YAs, one of the pictures in the background is Will Wright.
And once when I pressed "Random", a Sim that looked like Will Wright came up with the same face, but with the nerd outfit.

LOL Yes there are quite a few Will references in the game....one of the big rocks you can place in your Hoods is a Will Wright head, complete with glasses. You can see it in Strangetown...also the huge lot in Pleasantview is called Wright Way.

Agnes Crumplebottom is a distant relative of Cassandra Goth. I found a whole webpage discussing this subject before. She never got married, however, so Mrs Crumplebottom is not 'officially' by easter egg hunters considored to be a relative of the Goth's.

Found this on eeggs
"In the story for Pleasantville it says that it has been 25 years from the happenings of the original Sims game and Casandra Goth is grown and especially that Bella the wife of Mortimer has disappeared, but she has been found...
First of all run The Sims 2.
Then select the Pleasantville neighborhood to play in.
When the town loads click on the "Decorations" button and then select the category with the rainbow and hot air balloon with the label "Effects."
Now select the 'hot air balloon' and place it anywhere in the neighborhood.
Exit "Decorations" mode by selecting the "Houses and Lots" mode or the "Families" mode.
Find the hot air balloon that you just placed in the neighborhood and move and zoom in closely. You will see two people in the basket. Theres a lady in a red dress. Its Bella just as she looked in the original Sims game, but right next to her in the basket it appears to be a mystery man. Who could it be? "
Didn't know that, I want to see it now

I noticed a flying pig flying over Pleasantview yesterday, with strings dangling from it as if it had been unattached from somewhere. I guess its something that comes from OFB, I've just got that.

Yeah, apparently that was in reference to when the creators were asked if they would ever make a pets expansion for the game like unleashed for TS1. their response was "when pigs fly".. and well.. after OFB we got Pets, so I guess they kept their word.

What about the whole 'Bella' mystery? Did Maxis intend for something to happen (like her to appear, for her grave to be found somewhere, etc.) One of the Curious brothers in Strangetown has got engaged/in-a-relationship with the Strangetown Bella (I'm aware that there is more than one). Unfortunatly Mortimer died on my game so it is unlikely I can get them back together, as the Goth family is already huge and I don't want to ressurect some of the family even if it is to reunite them.
Ghanima Atreides
21st Nov 2007, 05:19 PM
Figgi - Maxis did not mean for anything special to happen with Bella. Even if you reunite them, they get no special memories, no graves appear, nothing...they won't even know eachother. Not to mention moving sims between 'hoods is dangerous business and can bork your game.
That being said, I just remembered this little easter egg...one of the Maxis people must be a Harry Potter fan :p

No, I think I googled Agnes Crumplebottom to try and find out who she was, a while before I got nightlife. It was one of those yahoo group pages (I think) and it went into a lot of detail about her, and I read the first few paragraphs but I was looking for a good picture so didn't pay too much attention.

Are the roofs that don't appear under "Auto-roof" considered Easter eggs?
In the opening to OFB, The final sentence gave the mathematical formula for a cone-shaped roof and that was when Conical roofs and dome roofs were introduced.

The little blurbs that crawl across the screen during the initial loading of the game. "Preparing Bacon for Homeward transportation", "Neutralizing Shuriken Oxidation","Reticulated Splines for sale $2000", etc. It includes something like "Roof=Roof *Pi R^2 H." Pi times R squared (R= radius of the circle at the base) Times the height is the area of a cone.

Has anyone got OFB and looked through the Tinker family album? The pictures reveal that the reason that Melody doesn't want to run her parent's toy shop is because she got scared by a jack-in-the-box! It shows a picture of her as a toddler surprised when jack came out and then there's pictures of her doing the Ahhh! Sim face when she finds one on the floor in her teenage years.

nevermind, shall use explanation here.
- If you have Celebration Stuff expansion, check in the shopping catalog, there is an object that looks like a sculpture of a small couple hugging each other. The couple are characters from MySims.
- In Teen Style Stuff expansion, there is a notice board in the shopping catalog with 2 designs. Both designs have concept art from MySims and also the character. Zoom in for a closer inspection! ;D Another is a picture of Servo from The Sims 1 pasted on the notice board, check it out!
- One of the shirts in CAS supposedly has Ms Nicole's concept art on it (see the bobblehead Facebook addon over at the official Sims 2 website)

First call the pizza or whatever you would like delivered. Then pull up the cheat window. Shift + Ctrl + C and type in moveobjects on..
Now here is the sneaky part...
When you delivery arrives, as soon as pizza dude or whoever get out of the car and have it in their hands, pause the game and snatch the object out of their hands, placing it on the table or where ever.
When you unpause the guy will not ring your doorbell and will leave..

And also, I think that when they prepare pancakes or something that uses milk, the picture on the milk is different from the Bella one, it's the clown from "livin' large" xD

In the posters and paintings you can hang in your Sims' houses are a lot of references, in name or in the image or style of the painting itself:
The "Its Reggae Mon" poster references to Bob Marley.
The "Space Oddity" poster references to David Bowie.
The "Kitten vs. Yarn", "Stunned Hound" and "Snoozing Enemies Comic" seem to reference to the Disney movie style.
The "Rainy Day Main Street" painting style seems to reference to the painter Rothko.
The "Paradise Lost (and Found)" painting references to John Milton.
The style in the painting "That Place Over There" by Retina Bluri looks a bit like Van Goghs landscapes.
The surrealist painting "In The Beginning" by Luc Dinwé is a reference to René Magritte (the apple as a head.)
The painting and style from "Lily Pads" by Myo Pia refere to Monet.
The style from "Sent to my room without Dinner" by Pics Elle remembers me of Klimt.
"Untitled" by Len Bledgemann is obviously a reference to Andy Warhol.
"Cantankerous Splatters" by Rod Nee remembers me of Jackson Pollock.
"A Sim Noir Print" is another obvious reference to Roy Lichtenstein.

I finally have some. If you look at the names of the artists of paintings in base game, it's kinda obvious.
-Luc Diswe= Look This Way
-Pics Elle= Pixelly
-Retina Bluri= Blury Retinas
There's more, but I can't remember now.
Does Bella Goth's and the SimCity painting count?
And a new painting from Free Time has a description that is obviously referring to Sims 3. By someone Ying. It talks about a place "where homes are no longer seperated" and some homes rise up with grandeur. It says at the end "some people say it's crazy, she says it's the future."
OH! And there is the painting if the Golden Gate Bridge, called suspense.

Another glitch/easter egg. Here's a tip for poor families: If you need a book but you don't want to spend money on a bookshelf, purchase the cheap cinderblock bookcase. Then order a sim to pick a book off the shelf. Turn on the moveobjects cheat and put the book somewhere (like on a desk, or on the floor.) Now delete the bookshelf.
Hooray, a free book without the shelf! I discovered this on accident while I was playing around with the moveobjects cheat :P
Ghost sdoj
15th Mar 2008, 03:30 PM
You can also just delete the shelf while someone is reading. Or use a sloppy sim who will go up three flights of stairs to leave the book on a coffee table rather than put it away. If there is no bookshelf in the house when they finish with the book they just set it down somewhere. (Neat freaks -will- complain about that, though.)

Okay, here are some funny things that EAxis wrote about some of the objects:
The ancient philosopher Tylopoda was able to prove through logical argument that everything is llama. Paradoxically, he was unable to categorically prove this of llamas. In his deep depression he flung himself into a frenzied pack of carnivorous llamas. For further reading upon the subject, see the published works of Ungulates and Suidae.
There is an old legend about the Gray Woman of SimCity. It is said that one day while the Gray Woman was baking a turkey, she got a call from her long lost cousin and accidentlally forgot the turkey was in the oven. This caused the house to catch fire, and tragically, the turkey was burned. Also, the woman died. But it is said that she watches all babies and toddlers from beyond the grave. And that is why they cannot be harmed by fire.

I've actually got a few of these.
-When Knowledge Sims fall into Aspiration Failure, they will autonomously 'Learn from Professor Von Ball', which is a reference to Cast Away.
-The Stack-O-Flames bonfire item that came with University contains a Durably Plush Teddy Bear, a Mr. BearlyButts chair, and a stack of Simply Spindles Coffee Tables. The rest of the rubble ranges from fence doors to random scraps of wood.
-Sims who have been previously abducted by aliens will be sucked up into the sky if spending extended time on an ElectroDance Sphere placed outside.
-Sims who use the 'Paint' interaction on an ordinary easel may produce a strange looking painting of Will Wright if they have a high enough creativity skill.
- Placing a dream catcher in a room where Sims sleep will provide you with lots of easy Simoleans- the dreamcatchers will literally the dreams of your sleeping Sims and convert them into Simoleans. Sell the dream catcher the when it has a high enough vaule and rake in the Simoleans.
-The, 'Election Day' pinball machine that came with University is a reference to [I]Independence Day.
-The Falconeer Chopper, (which I think came with Freetime), may be an Easter Egg of the ownable life-size helicopters we're supposed to be getting in Apartment Life.
-The Trottco Floor Model TV has the Maxis logo on it's DVD player.
-The, 'WhoDunnit?' table lamp, (which I think came with the base game) is referencing the board game clue.
Whew, that's all I've got for now. Any more? :anime:

I rarely bumped into him ingame but I remember him b/c he used to be on all the promos for Hot Date, and I think he was on my box too. The dreamcatchers turned up in wall hangings with Seasons. I didn't know about them actually getting more valuable from catching dreams. Do they lose value if they catch nightmares? I have one in the bedroom of the guy who was going to be my starving artist until he went into aspiration failure over not going to college. I used Christianlov's hacked diploma to give him a graduation, but he still has nightmares about almost missing out on his college education. I suppose I could remove the red memory of not going to college since he has a memory of graduating with honors as well, but I was just saying that he was disappointed at having to get an online degree rather than going to the school he wanted to go to.

Yeah, but don't tell me that you would be more likely to try it out if you were under the assumption that it just appreciated overnight. That's actually kind of boring. :]
(By the way, I've never tried putting the dream catcher in a room that Sims don't sleep in. If I place it in let's say, a kitchen, where, (well, at least MOST of the time) sleeping doesn't take place, will it still appreciate?

most stuff from decorative tab increase in value overnight
The Prima Guide actually gives some pretty fantastic information regarding that. It says...
"Art Objects (paintings and sculptures) don't depreciate in the same manner as regular objects. Instead, they randomly appreciate and depreciate each day: there's a 50-50 chance that the painting or sculpture will either appreciate or depreciate by an amount dictated by the object's current vaule:
-If less than $100, depreciates/appreciates $2.
-If more than $100 but less than $1,000, depreciates/appreciates $50."
So I guess I kind of fail at my statement. :smash:

About the The Gray Woman of SimCity
There is an old legend about the Gray Woman of SimCity. Now I'm a South Carolina native and there's a legend of a Grey Man on Pawley's Island. According to lowcountry lore, he walks the beach on the eve of a hurricane. If you see him and heed his warning to leave the island, your property/house will make it through the storm with little to no damage.
Now it's not exactly the same thing, but I always thought that because of the Grey Woman, one of the people at EAxis was a SC girl/boy.

Given the "spooky" nature of the Goth family, I would doubt the resemblence to an actor famous for starring in horror filns is coincidental

I cannot believe nobody has mentioned Veronaville yet.
Firstly, Verona is the name of the city that Romeo and Juliet, so Veronaville is clealy a play on that name. Similarly, the two largest families the "Monty" and "Capp" families are obious references to the Montegues and the Capulets who fueded in Romeo and Juliet . One of the main storylines even revolves around Romeo Monty and Julliette Capp's forbidden love. Even Tybalt and Mercutio are members of the family.
The Summerdream family are all named after characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Bottom wears a fairy costume, which is obviously a reference to the fact that fairies feature prominently in the play, and Titania wears a tiara, which obviously refers to the fact her namesake is Queen of the Fairies
Even the minor characters within the Monty and Capp familes have references to Shakespeare:
Bianca Monty - Bianca was a prostitute in Othello
Hal Capp - Hal was the nickname of Prince (later King) Henry in Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 and Henry V
Ariel Capp - Ariel was the name of a sprite in The Tempest
Desdemona Capp - Desdemona was Othello's wife in Othello
Goneril, Regan, Albany and Cornwall Capp - Were (respectively) the two daughters and their husbands in King Lear
Beatrice and Benedict Monty - were the names of the central lovers of Much Ado about Nothing
Hermia Capp - Hermia was one of the lovers in Midsummer Night's Dream
Antonio Monty - Antonio is the name of the protagonist from The Merchant of Venice
Finally, within the neighbourhood itself, there are lots of references to Shakespeare and his works, such as "Stratford Street," "Stratford Strip," "Bard Boulevard," "Globe Street," "Chorus Court," "Pentameter Parkway," and "Avon Avenue."

it's sad 'cause in dutch there are like half of the stuff about veronaville not true, cause of the translations. the families are called something with hate and heartless or soemthing. it would be cool if they kept the references in that hood, i mean they did translate shakespeare in duitch so why not keep the refenreces instead of that stupid tranlsations. the first names are still the same, but i don''t think the streets still have the meaning.

I've studied The Midsummer Night's Dream so I got the Summerdream family. You left out Puck though!
Puck is the name of one of the fairies in that play, the one who puts a potion on the 4 main character's eyes to make them all fall in love with the first one they lay their eyes on.
I've tried to continue on that theme by naming the children of Bianca and Kent (the only family I can stand playing) things like Cleopatra, etc.

Although I am a huge Shakespeare fan, the idea of Veronavile just bores me. I dont really like the fueding element and it just looses out to Strangeville (which I also dont play very often), but Pleasantville remains my focus.
Another Easter Egg I may have found (although it could just be me) could the BlueWater Village shopping area borrow its name from Bluewater (http://www.bluewater.co.uk/) - the largest and most popular shopping and leisure complex in Europe?

The little tidbits found throughout the game are so funny, I love them ...
This is just a teeny-tiny one, but the MP3 Player you can buy in University says that it comes from the musical center of SimCity, Cozmo Street. Cozmo Street was the district in The Urbz: Sims in the City that was frequented by the Black Eyed Peas. (on PS2/Gamecube, not DS)
Also, Malcolm Landgraab IV in OFB was re-used from Sims 2: Bustin' Out, I believe. You could move in with him at the start of the game.

Actually, Malcom Landgrabb in Sims Bustin Out was some weirdo who ran the town in a white suit and tall top hat. His son was... umm... oh crap. Started with a D, I think. Anyway, his son lives in a trailer and is a huuuuge slop. He had a daughter named Mimi in the game too. You could live with her too. The goal was to climb the career ladder to kick Malcom out of his house and move into it yourself.
That was my first Sims experience. I'd never played before that. I still love that game, I don't play it much anymore.

Ohh, that's right. It's been years since I played Bustin' Out. I confused Malcolm for Dudley.
A few other little things I noticed while playing the Curious brothers yesterday:
Their grandparents are named Notzo (not so) and Zo (so) Curious.
I forget the dad's name, but the mother was Kitty (Pretty) Curious.
I'm trying to figure out if there are any meanings behind Pascal and Vidcund. Lazlo almost sounds like That's So, but that's kind of a stretch. (How do you pronounce Vidcund, anyway?)
Also, this isn't really an Easter egg, but Pollination Tech #9 Smith fathered the alien Singles girls with their human dad! I don't know how I never noticed.
edit -- Oh, also, pregnant Vidcund was put on "maternity" leave as opposed to "paternity". But when you think about it, it's hard to decide ...

I noticed that, also. Red Vs. Blue is a machinima created by the Rooster Teeth team, who also created the Strangerhood. Which is funny, because that painting is from the base game. I think.
And The Strangerhood was created long after the Sims 2's release. Maybe someone was just a fan, or at least that's what I figured. :P

Bon Voyage comes with two statues, a bird and a horse, which reference Veronica Mars.
The bird statue mentions it could have saved a schoolbus of kids from falling of a cliff, which is a main season 2 storyline.
The horse statue mentions a father offering a poney to his daughter, which is from some of the show's funny moments.
I'm a fan of the show and love that the maxis people are such geeks and always find ways to include trivia in the object descriptions :).

I find it halerious that the Caliente family tree has a pollination technician as Flamenco's 'Mother' when really, alien pregnancies should replace the father? (I'm talking about in real sci-fi, not in TS2.)
I don't know if this is true, but it always made me chuckle.
I also find it hilarious that Bella Goth had an affair with Don Lothario who is Nina's 'lover'. Nina is related to Dina who is in love with Mortimer who's daughter, Cassandra, is engaged to Don.
Dina's deceased husband is related to Bella!
