All About Sim Magazines Tutorial

Sim made by snowyangst

In this tutorial you will be learning how to make the perfect magazine, with your model on the front cover! I am using Macromedia Fireworks. You can download the trial [here] (http://www.download.com/Macromedia-Fireworks-MX/3000-2192_4-10227163.html?tag=lst-0-1). I’m sure this tutorial can be transversable, and you can make a magazine with Photoshop. I just happen to find Fireworks easier to work with.

First you need to open up a new document. Make sure the width is 482 and the height is 625.

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/9045/step1mm4.jpg

After this you should have a blank canvas. You need to take a picture of your sim, but make sure the picture is big enough to cover the entire width and length of your canvas. If it isn’t wide enough you can always copy the picture, paste it, and flip it horizontally. That’s what I did with a photo of snowyangst’s sim Yume.

Now here is a little coloring trick that you may find handy. Copy and paste [this] (http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/6619/gradient1le7.jpg) gradient into your graphic and set at color burn.

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/3073/step3kq2.jpg

After than copy [this] (http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/7500/color2eu7.jpg) and set it to multiply. Mess around with the %. I set mine at 70%.

After all of that you should have something like this.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/3999/step4lj0.jpg

I think it adds something to the photo.

Next step is to add some text! I love Nirvana (http://www.dafont.com/nirvana.font) for magazines! It looks great on magazines and I think it would be a good contribution to your font collection.

Fonts and Text

There are a lot of fonts to choose from, but please stay to the basics. Nothing too overwhelming! Here are some examples of fonts. The last one is obviously “a don’t” and not a do.

http://img485.imageshack.us/img485/6329/avagg5.th.jpg (http://img485.imageshack.us/my.php?image=avagg5.jpg) http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3182/woahbv9.th.jpg (http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=woahbv9.jpg) http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6967/woahrl0.th.jpg (http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=woahrl0.jpg)

Next is to add little texts and headlines on your magazines. Play with the different things you have. Don’t be afraid to use bright colors, as long as you think they look nice! Here are some examples of what you can do to have a variety of fonts:

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/6408/step3ai0.jpg

Finished with the text! I have something like this. Notice how I stick to 3 main colors and 3 fonts. It looks a bit more professional when you keep it simple without 500 different fonts/colors.

Adding Something Extra

That last picture looked a little empty didn’t it? You can put more text to fill up the entire magazine, but it will look EXTREMELY busy with all of that. Well, here is something you can do to make it look a little nicer:

Take another picture or use the same picture and cut out a circle. Copy and paste it under the text. After that there will be a little space left. Go ahead and add some more text.

Final Step!

The last step is to add this (http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/7583/scratchxr6.jpg) and set it to screen. It will look so vintage and cool after that! Here is the very last result:

Big thanks to Snowy for letting me use her sim! I will answer any questions you guys have so ask away! If something is unclear I will explain it to you again. :ionfish: I’m hoping this tutorial will help some of you in beauty contests and stuff.

Comments :gasp: :) Thanks you guys! If you have any questions about something don't be afraid to ask. Apples, maybe the mods can let you post your tutorial in here? It can be for the people that use Photoshop. Some people that don't have fireworks, but want a magazine tutorial can use yours too. You're an awesome graphic artist ;)

One question.. how to set your layer in color burn using gimp? I can't find any option like that using gimp (the color burn, etc.)

Oh wow, ,I'm not even sure if Gimp has that; It might be under "Mode" like in this screenshot. Try clicking the drop down box and it might appear.

I hope that works.. If not I know another coloring technique, but it will make your picture a lighter icy blue/white. Sort of like this (http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/8318/hjlllg5.jpg). You just need multiply and overlay for that one.

Thanks Snowy! :)

If you go up to dialogs and click and then drop down to the selection that says layers, a window will come up and you can set the layer mode as burn in there. Hope that's what you're talking about.

This is awesome. And, if 3 has it, you can put something like this in a painting folder and paint this onto your walls/canvases and stuff. :D

lol.

This is a great tutorial. Might I suggest, for larger fonts, using the highlight tool (around the text layer only,) then using move pixel (at least that's what I think it's called) and just stretching the text? That's what I do when I want to resize text when I'm using Paint.Net, haha.
