In this thread, we try and improve our landscape picture taking techniques using the neighborhood camera.

I've often marveled at landscape renaissance paintings, specifically at how realistic the painter could make some things. Like putting windows and texture on a building half a mile away. The desertion and isolation of everything also amazes me... so when I decided to finally make a full-out medieval feudalistic neighborhood, I decided to try and do this. I used the Maxis Arbordale (or something) terrain to make the neighborhood and used several lots from Veronaville and many from MTS2 (such as the giant European castle, the Hogsmeade set, some cottages and tudor homes, etc.) to finish this off. The picture below is my "final draft" of my attempt at a recreation of a medieval landscape painting. Might take a while to load, I used prtscreen. :p

I spent this last weekend making a custom terrain for the neighborhood with SC4. It was frustrating, but I eventually got the results I wanted.

The grey part in the front is Mermaid City and the whiter buildings in the back are the chic seaside suburbia. The last two pics are a bit older and the skyscrapers have changed their location since. :smash:

It's made on enchantedw0lf's Enchanted Cove neighbourhood from MTS2, the town itself is called Black Ridge, named after the wooded hill it sits beneath. It still needs filling in a bit but I'm quite pleased with my first attempt :)

Oh, thanks a lot guys!
Here is some more pics. Fokshire is currently uder construction, so i just started to build it. There is a lot of work but already some scenic places there:
here you can see the shore area, entrance road bridge and small industrial district with coal powerstation in it:
http://i26.tinypic.com/293km01.jpg

And this is some row houses at the mainstreet:

Deadend train station (another view):

And this is what i'm working on now - Cathedral district (see those grey dummy houses?):
http://i32.tinypic.com/10z8wee.jpg

That's all for today :}

To poplers: Oh, sorry, but i'm not sure about lots, they are soo individual, i mean.. I use Lot expaner, so all unique lots can't be plopped the same way twice.

You've been inspired by Amsterdam haven't you?

Oh and also, in what way do you use the lot expander to create your lots? How are they different? (I'm very interested) Also, where'd you get the railroads for your neighborhood, and what terrain do you use? :D Folkshire looks really good, Pleasantview (compared to THIS) sucks. ;-; Great work. :]

I built the Day's House, but the others are these Neighbourhood Objects I found (which was just what I needed) I'll have to remember where I got them from as it was one of those random, but wonderful finds! I am still adding more to the Hood, so expect more images and I am thrilled you like it.

To Blake: Thankyou! Yes, but not only Amsterdam :} I'm trying to combine different arcitect styles in Fokshire :} The railroads are from MTS2? just search over the train, railroad ore something.. can't remember right :}
To JadeEliott: Thanks! :} Let me explain the trainstation...

And about lot expander - shuch lots as trainstation? or shoreline lot - yacht club are designed exactly with lot expander - it's very useful if you want to place few lots in a row and make them hang over eachother - this way you make connect buildings wall to wall and make long buildings look unbroken by lot borders. I mean - the train station contains 6 lots next to eachother? so each lot is a fragment of the trainstation.
Also i use lot expander to make lots hang over the road? for examp -see that roundabout thing in the center of a town? These lots next to the roundabout was made from 2x3 lots and than expanded to 5x5 so it allows to build a house that will fit the roundabout really well.

I would love for you to show some pics of what the lots look like from inside, I mean if you enter on of them to play add walls or deco or something - and how the town looks from the lot view as well.

Hey thanks you two! I find that also Romy. I found some pretty nice skyscrapers though. There's really not too much out there in the name of hood decor and I wouldn't know where to begin to make my own LOL

Here's another shot of downtown with Lake Michigan on the left. I haven't started my lots yet, thats for after the hood has been properly decorated. This pic was taken before I made Millenium Park to the right of downtown. For anyone familiar with downtown Chicago, this is sort of backwards, but thats just how the hood is set up. Coming in from the south, Lake Michigan is on the right. *doh*

Aijux - I love your Pleasantview, especially the downtown area :) Btw, those lots you built there (the ones near the large neigborhood deco buildings) seem to be really close to eachother. I tried to do that too for a shopping street I'm working on in my custom neighborhood, but I can't build the walls near the edges of the lot (which looks really stupid, because the lots are so tiny). Anyway, I was wondering if you used some kind of cheat or did you just build serveral buildings on one lot?

Criquette - Wonderful shot of Fokshire, the lighting looks beautiful, like the sun has just risen :)

I had a time problem in some of my houses. Time slowed down to a crawl, but the sims didn't. So they could sleep their bars full in under 3 hours. Ate breakfast in 20 minutes and got down from the third floor to the carpool in less than 10 minutes.
I could solve the mystery so i deleted my whole sims 2 folder. I really hope that'll solve it.

I'll post a pic of my new hood later.

Criquette:

I have been watching your hood development here and at Simtropolis and I love your new mod that makes a cul-de-sac and recolors the road. You are doing amazing, awesome work!

I want to ask about your buildings...are you building them yourself or downloading them and if so, where?

And as to your fence along the fields, the long wooden fence, is that a hood object or is it lots placed back to back as you explained before?

And your bridges...I have never seen bridges like that before. How are you getting those into game? Like Aries Crane Bridge above? Are they lots? or Hood deco?

Along your river, you have a concrete/cement edging. Can you share what that is and how you did it? I saw your fokshire terrain at MTS2 (looks amazing!) and I did not see two straight rivers in it (Aries River) as in your pictures at Simtropolis...I don't understand how you've done that.

Thanks for answering my questions about your amazing hood. You are beyond any creativity I have ever seen in the TS2 community as far as hood design goes.

Wow! So many questions :D

Ok, thank you for your great words and i'll answer, Jade Elliot!

Q: " want to ask about your buildings...are you building them yourself or downloading them and if so, where?"

A: All the buildings i'm using i create by myself (oh, i'm wrong - i also use wef maxis small houses). I never download buildings because i prefer to build it by myself :) The only lots i've dowloaded was vertical res' an comm' 1x2-5 lots :)

Q: "And as to your fence along the fields, the long wooden fence, is that a hood object or is it lots placed back to back as you explained before?"

A: Well this wooden fence (and the embankment to) are 'hood objects - i've found them somewhere at S2Community Finds Gallery (can't find the zip i've downloaded to give a credit :{..)

Q: "And your bridges...I have never seen bridges like that before. How are you getting those into game? Like Aries Crane Bridge above? Are they lots? or Hood deco?"

A: Bridges are lots. Yes, i've build them as usual buildings. But this is a tricky enough - you need a Lot expander to have your lot to hang over water. Both bridges are multilots and contain two lots - each one at the opposite riverside.

Q: "Along your river, you have a concrete/cement edging. Can you share what that is and how you did it? I saw your fokshire terrain at MTS2 (looks amazing!) and I did not see two straight rivers in it (Aries River) as in your pictures at Simtropolis...I don't understand how you've done that."

A: The embankment was created using altered hood objects that comes with the wood fence in one zip (I'll try to find a credit for them). By saying altered i meen that i've added a new texture to retaining walls, walways and make them aviable to place at the water. Oh and this area with straight river is an outskirt of main heighborhood, you know, like a downtown in NL or university campus.. So it's another map - second one.

Thank you again for this great comment, Jade Elliot! Hope I've answered to your questions.. I also will try to find where i've downloaded these hood objects.

Dasie, thank you very mutch too :)

DANG. Double DANG.

Whoa.

Okay, here is the deal, Babolat. I'ma gonna marry ya, take your hood, and divorce ya.

Questions:

How long does it take to load the hood? How about a lot? With so many trees, do you find a bit of lag?

How long did it take you to make that?

Did you use SaraMk's place hood deco anywhere mod?

http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,10625.0.html

Can you show a few pics from inside lots? Like from inside a riverside lot, for example?

Did you design the terrain yourself?

Wow, you guys are making Thyme look pretty paltry!

babolat85
9th Mar 2008, 04:26 AM
Jade,

It only takes about 2-3 minutes to load the hood actually. My old computer only had 1.5GB ram and a measely video card, but since that blew up in a lightning storm, the new one has 3GB Ram and a fairly decent video card. There's only a "slight" amount of lag when you first load it up, but are doing a few spins of the mouse, it sorts itself out.

I started making it in November, built the terrain from scratch in Simcity 4 and have been gradually working on it since then. I did use SaraMk's mod, but only recently. The riverside rocks were added about a month ago because I didn't like the look of the sharp edges between terrain and water.

I'll take some more pictures today, I've got some reading to do, but I'll crank it up just for ya.

And, shall we make the wedding, July 23rd, at the roof of the Sydney Opera House?

Thyme is never paltry, it looks amazing! Thyme and Fokshire are my biggest jaw-dropping inspirations. I love how your neighbourhood is entirely self-reliant (something I tried to copy myself, but failed), and Criquette's amazing scale. Keep up the good work!

Edit: Okay, here we go.

Babolat,

Thank you for answering my questions. And the 23rd is just fine with me!

I am going to send my blog readers to your photo albums on Thurs, so I hope you have enough bandwidth! Your hood is just awesome.

I especially like the clock tower on your church and the way you have the line of trees seperating your fields that are going up a hill. So nice. In your town, every lot must have a magnificent view!

I have found that making one's own hood in SC4 is more work, but really, REALLY pays off in the end - plus, if you forget a road or want to just expand, you can add them in later with terrain surgery, because you have the original SC4 file.

Also, not sure if you knew this, but you can keep both TS2 and SC4 open at the same time and hotswitch back and forth to check on how your hood's coming along. Just keep making new hoods. I named mine something like Test1, Test2, etc. I got up to the hundreds, no joke, before I was done with Thyme.

Thanks again, so appreciative...

Edited to add: I saw so many pictures in your album that could be real postcards, like the one with the water, the rocks and the goose floating by. Just marvelous.

Jade,
I didn't know you could run both Simcity 4 and The Sims 2 without them both having a crazy attack with each other. What I usually do is, load the neighbourhood on my desktop, and have my laptop with simcity 4 doing minor alterations before transferring it over via a USB drive.

I try to go for a common idea for my neighbourhood, mainly something that's a little bit rugged. I had some lost little area in Alaska as a picture in my mind, and then I decided to add some little quirks to it. As a result, the houses and businesses have a pretty good lookout, especially the ones on the mountain roads overlooking the town.

I'm glad you like my 'hood, I've been getting into the swing of taking pics of it lately, and it's great to have positive feedback. I'm honoured you want to direct your readers to my work :).

SSChan, I like the semi-detached houses, it gives it a cool industrial feel.

Before Freetime came out, I started making a new vacation neighbourhood for my Sims. I was a bit tired of them visiting the same places every time. I really need to get around to finishing it. Anyway, this is my Greek/Tropical vacation area, Hellenica:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t39/Babolat85/Hellenica%20and%20St%20Albans/snapshot_00000039_f4e1a1bc.jpg
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t39/Babolat85/Hellenica%20and%20St%20Albans/snapshot_00000039_94e1a1ef.jpg

And this is my main neighbourhoods spin-off, St Albans. Basically, as Denali River starts to become more and more populated, I wanted to have my sims branching out into this neighbourhood. Although it's built in the "next valley" to Denali (built it with the neighbouring terrain in SC4), it has a different feel about it, it's more of an English country village. I hope you like it.

Babolat, I am so in love with your towns! How did you make that awesome railroad??

I love the clock towers, too. I have been wanting to make one for my 'hood FOREVER but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I need about 20 extra hours in my day. ;-)

SSChan, your 'hood is so cool and unique! Is that a big factory in the middle? I'm currently building a (defunct) factory for my 'hood, so I was just curious how other people have done it.

babolat85
10th Mar 2008, 04:12 PM
jenba, the railroad neighbourhood thingys are from MTS2, in the neighbourhood decorations, and then the ones in the lot are from BeosBoxBoy at TSR, I think his stuff went free for a while, but I haven't checked recently, if not, its in the Booty.

We all need 20 extra hours a day, then I could get my History notes done, Argh!

You just gotta start small with your neighbourhood, don't get too ambitious. What I did when I first started the neighbourhood, was to fill all the areas with the BV pine trees, so it wasn't just a blank bit of green land. Now that I'm getting into the swing of it, I will probably start replacing some of the "decoration" plasticbox lots at the north of the town.

This is very good advice. With TS2 Hoods, smaller is always better, you can always expand as your hood grows, it does not have to be all perfect right now. I am going to add a poorer section to Thyme, by the pier, for the refugee and mining camp. I will use Pescado's terrain surgery to do this. If you make your own terrain, you can always change it up a bit later - and then call it an earthquake or something and write a story about it.

:-)

SSChan, I am also wondering what your tall building in the middle is. Looks intriguing. Your hood is wonderful!

SSChan
10th Mar 2008, 08:55 PM
Thanks guys! :3

Jenba/Jade: Actually the tall brick building is just a hood decoration, either from MTS2 or TSR. The buildings around it are facades that I built for my story hood that I decided to plop into Copacetic.

However, Rilassare (one of the brick buildings) was built as a factory rennovated into a Speakeasy. There are pics of it around the boards somewhere. ^^;

SSChan...is that Pleasantview.....That is beautiful.......

Sorta. I started with the blank NHood Template called Pleasant View, but it's not Pleasantview, the developed hood by Maxis. Ick. Maxis. *shudder*

Thanks to everyone that's commented on Copacetic Springs!

Ting Tong, I used the unlocked Waterfall objects by Numenor and bunch of boulders. They're somewhere on MTS2.

I always lurk on this thread as it's my fave, but I've decided to post pics of my new neighbourhood. I'm still working on it as you can tell from the empty lots and thanks to you guys I'm making it more than some random houses plopped into a giant field.

Do you guys really build all of those houses and community lots? That must take forever...

babolat85

Hrmm, well, out of like 30 houses or so, only about 5 are by plasticbox, 2 are from the Hollywood competition on MTS2, the rest I built myself. All the community lots I built myself, doesn't take too much time, but I like building just as much as playing the families. I'm too much of a perfectionist :\

And thanks Jade, I think I have an admirer. The wedding still on? :D
