View Full Version : Maxis Home Makeover: Strangetown //WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Pages : [1] 2

3rd May 2008, 6:41 AM
(This contest belongs in HOUSES)

Welcome back to yet another fabulous season of Maxis Home Makeover, where you turn a mediocre Maxian home, into a fab abode. Last season, we went to the lush suburbs of Pleasantview.

(Entries by Pleasantview edition winner CiaoAlora)

This time around, we are going to the dry sandy deserts of Strangetown. What secrets hide within this barren land? What houses will we have to makeover here?

1. You are allowed to change the interior floorplan of the house.

2. Budget is unlimited, so go crazy.

3. For a challenge, the only CC allowed for the house are:

Maxis recolors (both for buy and build mode)
Maxis Match items (and their recolors),
Life Stories (and other Stories-to-Sims 2) items
Pre-Order items
Lost and Found stuff,
official Maxis downloads (US and International)
walls and floors.
custom plants

Other CC is not allowed.

4. You may have up to 2 designers, but they must work on the same house (in other words, a team). They may be adults or elders.

5. Unlike last cycle, you can do anything with the exterior. Retain it, rebuild it, give it a complete overhaul, anything. This means, there will be quite a lot of house building involved, aside from the interior design

6. Landscaping must be appropriate for a desert. Therefore, I will allow CUSTOM PLANTS for this cycle

7. I live in the Philippines, so times will be based on my time.

8. You will need 1 exterior shot, 1 aerial shot per floor, and at least FOUR interior shots. Apply forum rules. Make sure that your pictures are not monstrously huge nor microscopically minuscule. A minimum of 500x450 and a max of 700x700 shall suffice as not to make our judges' lives difficult. KEEP LINKS TO A MINIMUM. Judges don’t like too many clickies.

9. As much as possible, NO DROPOUTS!

10. PM me if you would like an extension. A maximum of one hour will be given.

11. The ultimate rule: HAVE FUN!

Winner gets a

Custom Sims by me:

Lot bin house makeovers by me

Aesthetics and Originality: How does it stand out against the rest of the entries? Does the house look good inside and out, with appropriate clutter on the right places? (35/35)

Physics and Functionality of Rooms: Are the rooms functional? Will the sim be able to use an object without throwing a tantrum? Are the essentials there (fridge, phone, fire alarm, etc.)? (40/40)

Compliance with Rules: Self-explanatory. The judges and I will be especially strict with the CC rules. Also, don't forget to put the name of the designer and the round. I will likely remind you if you forget. (15/15)

Effort: How much work did you put into it? (10/10)

Judging process: At the end of each round (except apps), the judges AND 1 EJ will be PMed. Based on the ff. criteria, they will give a score out of 100 and will each give some comments about the entries. I will then rank the entries based on the judges' scores and whoever gets the lowest scores will be eliminated.

Oh boy! I was kind of hoping this wouldn't come around for a while yet as I really REALLY want to enter, the pleasantview edition was so much fun but I'm just not sure if I'll have time :( I'll have to look at what I've got planned for the next month *fingers crossed*

28th May 2008, 9:13 AM
Can we totally demolish and rebuild the houses this time?

28th May 2008, 9:21 AM
Sweet. I was hoping this would come up. I'm gonna try and enter if I find time between all my assignments. I should be able to enter though *fingers and toes crossed*

28th May 2008, 10:56 AM
Can we totally demolish and rebuild the houses this time?

Yep. Most of the houses really need rebuilding, anyway.

28th May 2008, 11:34 AM
Im going to enter. (3

28th May 2008, 2:15 PM
YES YES YES!! I've been checking these threads almost daily. Count me in! When do the apps have to be in by? And can we keep the original house structure?

28th May 2008, 2:35 PM
June 3, 11:30 PM. Posted the dates already. And yes, you may keep the structure if you want.

28th May 2008, 3:13 PM

28th May 2008, 3:22 PM

28th May 2008, 7:16 PM
Great avitars duderocks! Thanks, now I hope we see some applications come in! :D

29th May 2008, 12:40 AM
Count me in... Working on it now!

29th May 2008, 1:02 AM
Also count me in, just opening up my game :]

29th May 2008, 2:27 PM
Wow! This looks really neat. I would like to do a makeover on Strangetown.

29th May 2008, 2:54 PM
Oh, almost forgot...

Please have the headshots of the designers on a plain-colored background that does not blend with the sim. Also, one picture per designer.

I need it for the avis. ;)

EDIT: Also, If we don't reach 15 contestants by the 3rd of June, apps will extend to Round 1 (but please, for your sanity's sake, get your apps by this round. Strangetown lots are bigger than those in Pleasantview)

30th May 2008, 1:56 AM
Why are we rebuilding? Aren't we meant to be just making the homes over?
Just want to clarify....when you say custom plants, can they be indoor and outdoor plants?
And is this makeover both interior and exterior?

30th May 2008, 2:14 AM
1. You may retain the structure, if you wish. But if you want to make changes to the original, you can do so as well. If you want to rebuild, go ahead.

2. Only custom outdoor plants. Should've made it clear.

3. Makeover is both exterior and interior.

30th May 2008, 2:31 PM
Come on, let's get some apps here. Don't want to close this contest, you know. :(;)

30th May 2008, 4:01 PM
Working on it. Pretty hard to landscape a desert lol.
Are there any kick-outs this round? Will everyone make it through the apps i mean?

30th May 2008, 4:07 PM
Everyone will make it through the apps. :)

30th May 2008, 7:02 PM
under CC allowed in the contest you've said "lost and found" items, what are they?

31st May 2008, 12:55 AM
under CC allowed in the contest you've said "lost and found" items, what are they?

If you go to MTS2 and search under Numenor's downloads, there are a series of items and textures he extracted from the game. Here (http://www.modthesims2.com/download.php?tag=lost&go=Go&f=38&showType=1&gameOrig=1&gameUni=1&gameNL=1&gameOFB=1&gamePets=1&gameSeasons=1&gameBV=1&gameFT=1&gameFFS=1&gameGLS=1&gameCLS=1&gameHMS=1&gameTSS=1&gameKBS=1&filter=0&typenormal=1&typepicked=1&typefeatured=1&username=Numenor&csort=0)

31st May 2008, 2:32 AM
The reason i asked about the interior is because you said min 2 shots, but there would be at least 4 rooms to a house.

Can we use items made with stations etc like robots, boquets, toys etc and can we use reward items?

31st May 2008, 2:41 AM
You can have more than 2 pictures, 2 is the MINIMUM not max.

Those mentioned are considered Maxis items and therefore, allowed.

31st May 2008, 3:25 AM
Thanks Dude :) Yes i know you said minimum, i just found it an unusual number for a minimum is all :)

31st May 2008, 4:53 AM
I can't post my app till I have 5 more posts...

Should I just post here...?

31st May 2008, 5:07 AM
Sure, you can. If you can't post pictures, post them as links.

31st May 2008, 5:22 AM
Hi dude! I will definitely give this a go. I absolutely love the Curious house. It's my favourite to do over. Since we can demolish, I take it we can also build on a second storey?

31st May 2008, 5:55 AM
Of course you can. This cycle is a little more flexible than the last. ;)

31st May 2008, 5:57 AM
Can i just ask another question about those cc plants. Some outdoor plants are listed in the buy mode catalogue but aren't in pots etc. Can those be used?

31st May 2008, 6:05 AM
As long as they look like outdoor plants, that is fine.

31st May 2008, 6:06 AM
cool lol you rock dude ;)

31st May 2008, 6:24 AM
NOTE: Forgot to include this rule...

Please indicate whatever custom objects you used (exceptions: Walls, floors, custom plants). This will make it easier for the judges to score the "Rules and Guidelines" part of the criteria.

Also, briefly describe what you did to the house (those who were contestants/judges/lurkers from the last cycle will probably know this). Also put the round and name of designer/s on the title bar.

31st May 2008, 5:08 PM
I really want to join this, but I will be gone after June 26th. Will I still be able to apply =/

31st May 2008, 5:19 PM
Lily Hamptons App.

I only own the ORIGINAL game. No EP's or SP's.

My name is Lily Hampton. I am new to the designing business, so i'm planing to be the underdog. I'm currently 27 years old.

The Curious House was a fun desgin. The diagonal walls and the obeservation tower made it a fun place. I kept most of the structure intact, and added small 2 two story rooms.

The first story floor plan hasnt changed much, except that the diagonal walls where removed, staircase placement changed, and I opened up the floor plan a bit.

I added two small two story bedrooms, as I turned one of the three bedrooms downstairs into a nursury for the expecting Pascal. (I was in shock when I first met them!)

The kitchen has been redone as the family room was really opened up.

 Cheers. I hope I did everything right. My first contest :]

31st May 2008, 5:50 PM
You do have to showcase all of the rooms, though (in perspective form). 2 is the absolute minimum for the interior pictures, but you can go beyond that. Also, indicate whatever CC you used that are not walls, floors and outdoor plants.

I'll add you to the list. Good entry.

31st May 2008, 6:51 PM

I'm just about done my house. I absolutely love it. Just gotta add some plants to the outdoors and i'm done.

I also have two questions.

How do I make a seperate post containing my pictures, and how do I link that URL into here saying something else :D Thank you.

1st Jun 2008, 12:02 AM
I hope app's start coming in by tomorrow.
I can already tell I need to start looking though house plans and desgin websites again...

Thanks for the avii.

1st Jun 2008, 1:34 AM
I downloaded a large version of the giraffe that sits on top of one of the cupboards from teen style stuff at tsr. Am i allowed to use that for the nursery?
Aaaaaaand i just downloaded HP's bedding defaults and have since found matching drapes to go with them and the old bedding. Can these be used?
Default bedding matched drapes here:
and regular bedding match here:

1st Jun 2008, 3:15 AM
Yes, you can use them.

How do I make a seperate post containing my pictures, and how do I link that URL into here saying something else :D Thank you.

Just reply to this thread with your app. Right click on the post number (upper right corner of that post) and select 'Copy Link Location' (or Copy Shortcut for IE). Go to the edit button of the other post and then click the hyperlink button.

1st Jun 2008, 3:25 AM
Hey duderocks. Great contest!! I have a quick question. Do you have to show the Curious family living in the house? as I killed them off a while back. could i just have no people in my house shots? is that ok?

1st Jun 2008, 3:31 AM
No, you don't have to have people there, as it's mostly a building and designing contest.

1st Jun 2008, 5:05 AM
Right I have re done my entry now. I hope the pics are better. I know they are not top notch but i think its my graphics card that is letting me down.

Name of designer: Martin Thompson
Age: 27
Speciality: nothing really, new to interior design, likes kitchens though
Expansion packs: Nightlife,Open for Bussiness and seasons. No stuff packs :(

Head shot of Designer:

Ok so When I saw the Curious household, I thought to myself that they needed something more modern. They are certainly a strange family and to make sure they stayed that way, most of the structure was kept. Infact all that was added were two small extensions; 1 downstairs for the bathroom. and 1 upstairs windowed room to allow as a science HQ for the boys to have fun in.

Here is an overview of the whole house:

Next is the floorplan(sorry it is not very high quality) showing how I have opened up most of the living space downstairs to make the room seem much larger. This really helps to make it more of a family home, and by removing the Old bathroom and walls the space made a nice living/dining room.

The Living room consists mainly of this cubic sofa which means all members of the family can gather and enjoy family bonding.

Here is a more general shot of the now opened up space downstairs:

Along with the Living/dining room, I needed to update the already modern kitchen with new counters that complemented the floorboards. I like the idea of having an island bar so simply left that there and just changed the workktops.

Here is the science room that has been added to the second story. It is perfect for keeping the boys entertained whilst giving them a chillout zone for enjoying their favourite hobby

And finally one last shot of the backyard, which still has an area where a barbeque can be held as well as implementing some new plants and statues. I also added lights to the pathways to make it seem less dark and daunting.

I really enjoyed making over the curious household and feel that it has gained more warmth as a result of the more subtle tones and wood flooring throughout.

I hope that i have done everything as i should if not tell me and i will put it right.

1st Jun 2008, 5:24 AM
simsimsims, I'll add you to the list, but please make your pictures bigger (and increase the picture quality options) of your pictures. Minimum is 500x450. I will ask the regular judges to comment on the apps so all contestants will know where to improve.

and kindly change the headshot as well, plain background please. ;)

FOR THOSE WHO WOLD LIKE TO JOIN: Please indicate which EPs and SPs you have (added to application requirements).

1st Jun 2008, 6:05 AM
I'm working on it I swear... I don't have my computer tonight but I WILL have it tomarrow afternoon and it WILL get in then :)

1st Jun 2008, 6:21 AM
No problem. Hopefully, we will get a decent amount of contestants (10-15) by tomorrow. If not, apps will extend to round 1.

1st Jun 2008, 8:25 AM
Name of Designer: Shannen Buttagig (slightly tweaked female version of Noel byPeachT @dlmuslow)
Age: 26
Specialties: Bathrooms, dining rooms
EPs and SPs i have: All expansions. Holiday stuff, TSS, FFS, GLS.

This past week i have made over the curious house. This proved move difficult than i had expected, particularly the landscaping, but i'm always up for a challenge.
Since there are 3 men living in this home who are very much space geeks i tried to stay with the theme. Modern, tech, masculan. Clean lines, very sterile, very Sci Fi.

The house structure is similar to that of a space lab.

Aerial Veiw

Living area and work stations. Robot thingy is made from the robot making station.

Bedrooms x 4 inc Nursery (Giraffe matches the one on top of TSS cupboard)

Bathrooms x 2

Kitchen: Ugly as it is, this is exactly what i'd expect to see in a techno freaks home.

Difficult to get good shots with the odd angles of the house.

I think everything else is just recoloured maxis.

1st Jun 2008, 8:29 AM
great entry, starwyn! Added your avi on the avvies post.

1st Jun 2008, 12:39 PM
Thanks. I hope there will be more entries soon. Which house is next? I might get a start on it.

1st Jun 2008, 1:56 PM
I will give the house to work on as soon as apps finish. There will be some requirements and a particular decorating style to be followed, so better wait until I give the house so your efforts will not be wasted.

1st Jun 2008, 2:11 PM
thanks romy for that site info. I so didn't feel like putting strangetown back in my game so this is a better compromise for me.

1st Jun 2008, 4:22 PM
I would like to join this. At first I was iffy because I'm not too good at decorating with maxis only stuff, but I figured why not if I can get the app done. I hope more contestants join! How many do you need as a minimum?

Also, so you can use any custom wall/floor you want? Or am I misreading that?

1st Jun 2008, 4:28 PM
Ideally, I need 15 contestants, but 10 is the bare minimum. Also, you can use any wall/floor you want.

1st Jun 2008, 4:46 PM
I'm working on my App now, I'm just downloading the house, I'll edit this post when I'm done, however, I will be out of town and have no access to the game starting Wednesday morning, and coming back home late Sunday afternoon. If that's a problem I won't enter, thanks duderocks!

1st Jun 2008, 5:12 PM
I'll probably extend apps to round 1, but I think that's a problem because Round 1 ends on Monday evening here. All of the houses are pretty big, so you won't have much time to work on them. :(

This being my first house contest, I can admit I was very nervous. I had no general ideas except for one, which was to make the entire stairs to the observatory indoor. I thought it just made more sense. From there I got inspiration. I thought with a baby on the way it would be much more ideal for the 3 men to settle down to a less hectic style but still retain some of their fun-loving charm. As we paneled up the house with the finest wood I made a very tough desicion that would essentially change the whole entire look of the house. And that was to make a modern "boat-house."

I felt that I still had to leave some remnants of their quirky personalities. In each bedroom I created some whacky combonations of color and left a couple funky pictures and sculptures. No custom content was used in this house other than Desert Plants used throughout the front lawn of the house. Hope you like!

I hope I did this right.

Name of Designer: Lilah Fulton
Age: 24
Specialties: Childrens/Infant bedrooms, kitchens
EPs and SPs i have: All expansions. Holiday stuff, TSS, FFS, GLS, and I think one more SP but I can't for the life of my think which one.

Hello, I am Lilah.
I just recently had the job of redoing the Curious house, in Strangetown. Here are the finished results:

Exterior: As you can see, I added a pool in the back so the boy's can get cool on a hot day. I also added more deserty landscaping and an outdoor chess set!

this is the nursery: (The changing table got cut off because of the horrible angles in this house) Pascal just welcomed twin girls and asked me to make them a girly nursery. He said this is the only place in the house that you'll find pink, haha. It is also my favorite room.
(I used a recolor of one of the maxis rugs and then placed two side by side)

Bedroom One:
This is also one of my favorite rooms, can't you just imagine it being in a spaceship?

Bed recolor used

Bedroom 2:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/IceAngel12891/bedroom1.jpg (Sorry for the walls, like I said..the angles were tight

Bedroom 3:
(I'm linking it because its a really bad picture because the room was so small.)

Living Room: They asked for it to be a multipurpose space, so that is what I gave them =]

And last but not least, the kitchen:

I was a little wary at first when I received this job, but it ended up being really easy and fun! I tried to incoorporate each of the guy's personality into the house. They seem to love it!

The only custom content I used was walls and floors and an occasional recolor of maxis items. I don't think I used anything else.

Once again, sorry for the horrible picture angles, it was an odd shaped house and the angles were tight.

Name of Designer: Lyran Wuppie (yes!! Like the AH ones)
Age: 31 years
Specialty: Living rooms, that's where everything happens (except it)
EPs and SPs you have: Uni, NL & OFB (I want more!!)

The Curious house is a challenge, it has strange angles and extraordinary people living in it. I didn't want to make huge changes in the building so the structure is very like the original. The interior of the house was way to much steel and stone, no place where you can raise a baby. So I wanted to mix wood, steel, retro, modern and red all trough each other.

I replaced the little white stones by putting a lot of wood on it, and around the house a lot of plants and trees have been placed. I also added a garage and simplified the strange lookout on the roof.
CC:Fence by Holy Simoly, plants by some person

Aeriel, the house it shape hasn't chanced that much. I added a extra place for the dining area and placed the front door somewhere else.

Walking trough the modern front door, you end up directly in the living room. I used red, wood and some strong shapes. I used the original little white bricks in 2 rooms so that the Curious family would still remember something from the past.
CC: Curtains by Holy Simoly, floor and wall by ??

Other angle and surprised Lazlo
Clickie!! (Stairs form Holy Simoly) (http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h127/kipsnif/ScreenShot014.jpg)

At the left of the livingroom is the diningroom. It's not that special but fun.
CC: Floor by ?? Maxis-match Table by ??

And connected with the diningroom is the kitchen. It's sober and simple, you want be distracted while cooking.
CC: Floor&Wall

The first room on the right is Lazlo's room, Lazlo described himself as a person who loves the supernatural and calls with his future-teller every ten minutes. And I know a guy from an antique shop who had a wonderful phone for me. Put a chair next to the phone and Lazlo will be happy for the rest of his life.
CC: Wall&Floor, recolor of maxis wardrobe, recolor of maxis bed and bedding

Behind Lazlo's room, Vincent's room is situated. Because he has come out that he likes flowers, I gave him a peaceful green room with the family-flower-thingie.
CC: Bedding, Wall&floor

And then we have Pascal's room, it's full with baby blue since the gynecologist said it was going to be a boy.
CC: Baby stuff recolors in bleu and white, curtains by Holy Simoly and maxis wardrobe recolor.

At the end of the house is a little cozy bathroom.
CC: Wall&Floor

Inside the garage

On the roof is a dining table if they want to dine under the star heaven and 2 treadmills to do whatever you want.
Maxis-match table

And last but not least: the garden with swimmingpool. And a lot of scrubs and trees!!
CC: Plants from somewhere

Excuse for the strange use of pictures (most big, 2 small and 2 links)

hey guys, i am having problems with photos and was wandering if anyone could help? When i take snapshots in my game they are saved as 400x300(size) when i try to make them bigger in photobucket the image becomes more distorted/fuzzy. You can use paint also simsimsims. Just hit the alt key and the prtscr key and paste it into paint. You have to do it one at a time though.
Ice Angel, did curious have twin girls???
When i first loaded their lot i walked away to do something and forgot about it until one of my kids ran in to ask me what i wanted to name the new baby girl LOL. I ended up not saving and bulldozing the house because it was taking too long to delete everything (hence why the lot is not longer in the exact same position) and sure enough he went into labour and had another girl.

Yes he did have twin girls, but I may have used a hack for that, it was over a year when I last played them so I don't remember, lol. All I know is I went into the lot and there were two infant girls so I made a nursery for twins, hah.

I will give the house to work on as soon as apps finish. There will be some requirements and a particular decorating style to be followed, so better wait until I give the house so your efforts will not be wasted.

I don't mean to be pushy but since we're all going through to round 1 can we have them a day early? The reason i ask this is tonight is the only good chance i will have to go in game. Meaning i will have a few hours i can get to work on it whereas the rest of the week would be in dribs and drabs.
No worries if you can't though i just wanted to use this rare free time i have to get a start on it :)

I'd like that too, as tomorrow I'll be busy all day and I'm in the mood for decorating right now, lol. Plus my computer with the sims on it isn't being an idiot, haha. But I too can totally understand if you can't.

I came a running when I heard Strangetown needed a designer. My name is Spider Daz and I am 134 years young. I love to redo the kitchen. It is just the heart of any home, in my humble opinion.

But you don't want to hear me go on and on. You want to see what I can do!
As you can see I didn't get rid of those lovely towers. I think it give the place character.
I gave the boys a great big room for exercising their big brains plus a second bathroom and a bedroom for one of our handsome nerds.
I didn't change the floorplan too much. I love the angles and corners. Makes it different and different is good! I did give the boys a nursery. They can't keep away from those telescopes and those aliens can't keep away from the Curious Boys!
The kitchen! Homey and yet with a scifi feel!
The living room is now for relaxing and watching tv or reading a book.

The baby's room has room to grow and share. It matches Pascal's baby boy.
Here is our single father's get away. Very relaxing.
Here is Vidcund's hideaway. I move him to the upstairs because he is all dark and moody and needs alot of me time. I hope he calls me. /sigh.

(( I have every ep and sp))

* If the terrain paint is illegal, please discount my entry*

2nd Jun 2008, 1:29 AM
Anebrd You just need to add your sims name and round to the title :)

2nd Jun 2008, 2:15 AM
WOW! So many entries. Keep theose coming.

Anebrd, terrain paint is not allowed. But since its only the apps, I'll let it slide. Also, please change your headshot. Plain background.

For those asking me to post round 1, I'll post them later. Making the avvies first.

2nd Jun 2008, 2:24 AM
Is terrain paint not allowed??? LOOOOOOOOOOL I used tonnes of it in my app! I'm so sorry. Will you let mine slide also since there doesn't seem to be a terrain match for that terrain that comes with that neighbourhood?

2nd Jun 2008, 2:28 AM
I won't disqualify anyone because of 1 piece of banned CC. In the rounds, though, you will be deducted points.

2nd Jun 2008, 2:47 AM
ROUND 1: 'Tis Not Easy Being Green

House: The Smiths (Yellow house with lawn)

Better furnishings
Nicer decorations
Lawn: retained
Decorating style: Your typical suburban house (because the Smiths are like that)

2nd Jun 2008, 2:48 AM
thanks for posting round one!
Also, I love my avi!

2nd Jun 2008, 2:50 AM
Just added the next batch of avvies on the avvies post. If you already got your application and still don't have an avi there, that means you need to change your headshot as I can't extract your sim.

Spicycookies, are you done with your app? It seems incomplete (without indication that you are going to finish it up). You need to showcase all of the rooms in the house. Don't worry, just a friendly reminder.

2nd Jun 2008, 3:14 AM
Lawn retained meaning don't alter the terrain?
Spicycookies may be confused as you said min 2 pics of interior :)
Thanks for posting round 2 requirements.
Btw what is the time the phillipines is on? Is it EST? as you seem to be awake during th same hours i am. It is currently 12.17pm here on the 2nd June.

2nd Jun 2008, 3:17 AM
It's GMT +8. You are 2 hours ahead of my time. You may put terrain paint there, but no sand must be exposed. PT9 loves his lawn.

NOTE: I have upped the min. number of interior pics to FOUR.

Anebrd, thank you for changing your headshot. I'll start working on your avi now.

2nd Jun 2008, 3:24 AM
Thank you Duderocks.

I have a question. Lost and found applies to items like this : http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=36604?

Looking forward to the avi. They look sharp.

2nd Jun 2008, 3:28 AM
Yes. It applies to those items.

Also, I just finished your avi: http://forums.sims2community.com/showpost.php?p=1192478&postcount=40
The last one.

2nd Jun 2008, 4:14 AM
And all the same rules apply? ie: cc plants, walls, maxis match etc etc...

2nd Jun 2008, 4:19 AM
The CC rules apply to all rounds.

Name: Lyra Freedman
Age: 25
Favorite Room: Living Rooms, Bedrooms
EP's I have: All EP's + Teen Style Stuff & Kitchen & Bath Design Stuff

I went with a kind of desert compound look for my clients, they were sick of the metal and ladder look of the old place, so we went with a complete demolition. What we came up with was homey but still sticking with the southwestern theme.
CC: Climbing vines

You can definitely tell that boys live here. The living room has a vaguely modern look to it but its still comfortable. A computer area and TV and couch area are done in modern themes. We put movie posters up to make it fun and welcoming for their guests.
CC: Desk & desk chair are Maxis match, poster recolors

The kitchen & dining room are modern without being too "out there". We put in hardwood cabinets, brand new appliances, and a table to drop things on when they come into the house. The dining room is simple with a touch of modern in the chairs, lighting and table.
CC: Dining table is Maxis Match

We did Lazlo's room very simple as he is getting married and she will be moving into the house so we wanted to leave space for her to put her personal touch into the room.
CC: Poster recolors, bed (maxis match) and bedding

Bright colors are what Vincund wanted in his room and thats what I gave him. Purples and oranges and lots of sciency stuff.
CC: Bedding and poster recolors

Pascal loves photography (along with his love of the stars :D) so we put up some of his favorite photographs and made his room stand out from the crowd. He loves it!
CC: Poster recolors and bedding

And of course the baby! Pascal's baby turned out to be a boy so we went with the classic blue theme. No spacey stuff in here, Pascal wants his child to decide for himself whether he wants to get into that or not, being from the stars and all. *wink wink*
CC: Poster recolors

We also added a pool, greenhouse for Lazlo, and observatory to the backyard.
CC: Grill is from Life Stories

Basement Overview:

Middle Floor Overview:

Top Floor Overview:

Side Note: Most of my floors and walls are CC as are the windows and doors, Maxis Match by Marylou. Just so you know :)

Hope its ok!

2nd Jun 2008, 7:22 AM
Great entry, photo. Just added your avi to the avvies post.

2nd Jun 2008, 7:40 AM
Wow photo! I thought of keeping something along the lines of observatory but didn't come up with anything so i love how you did that.
Anyway i just went and picked up K&B stuff, quite impressed with the bathrooms. Ready to download and start on round 1 :D

2nd Jun 2008, 8:10 AM
Can I still put in an app or is it too late?

2nd Jun 2008, 9:28 AM
Yes, you can still put an app. ;)

2nd Jun 2008, 10:28 AM
How long do we have for an app? Because I want to enter !

2nd Jun 2008, 10:32 AM
Yay! =]
Can I get my app in in the morning?
(Oh I live in Kansas so I'm not sure what the time frame is...)

2nd Jun 2008, 12:00 PM
Since we have less than 15 contestants, I will extend apps to round 1.

Round 1: http://forums.sims2community.com/showpost.php?p=1193172&postcount=82

2nd Jun 2008, 3:34 PM
What exactly does retained lawn mean?

2nd Jun 2008, 4:15 PM
When you reach the Smiths' house, you will see that it has grass instead of the actual desert. You must not expose any sand on the lot. It must be covered with grass (terrain paint). You may add some terrain cover on top of it, but no sand.

brandon. added your avi to the avvies post.

EVERYONE: For those who have incomplete entries, please complete them by tomorrow, or else face disqualification. Those who would like to submit their app may do so until the end of Round 1.

2nd Jun 2008, 4:59 PM
I'm done with my app.!!

2nd Jun 2008, 8:28 PM
My name is Lia Star. I'm just starting out as a designer, but I really like redoing living rooms. I just celebrated my twenty fifth birthday.
<b>I have all eps, celebration stuff, Happy Holiday Stuff, and Teen Style Stuff</b>
I really love the Curious house and how unique it is. But with Pascal's baby soon to be here(Just a few days after Christmas, poor thing), the house needed a more homey feeling. I added a whole second floor, and really opened up the space downstairs.
We took down the walls downstairs, and moved the bedrooms upstairs, and changed the layout of the first floor.
Towards the side of the house, there is a study for the guys.
The stairs were moved, opening up more space for a kitchen and dining room.
I kept the island, but put in brand new counters and added a second space.
The living room is much larger now, and more family oriented. There was also room to put the christmas tree in the corner.
The bathroom was moved and is no longer in the way of everything.
The second floor we added is only for bedrooms.
The baby's room is done mostly in green, and very easily changed as the child grows.
Vidcund, being the youngest of the brothers, wanted a bit crazier room, filled with yellows and greens.
Lazlo wanted a bit more practical room, but insisted upon some fitness equipment in there, he says that with all the cooking he does, it needed.
The hallway was very regular and practical.
Pascal decided to go with a very simple room, seeing as he wouldn't be spending as much time there, as he would the nursery. Though he did insist on this odd couch being there for some reason.
Since they all go to the same job, they have only one car, a hybrid of course. (Car from original site)
Of course, there is still an observation tower, but it isn't as high up. There is also an easel up there incase someone wants to paint a picture of the stars.

2nd Jun 2008, 8:58 PM
Great Make Overs everyone!!:)
I would like to join this contest when we can join:)

2nd Jun 2008, 10:18 PM
actually, I wasn't finished my post guys.. sorry to confuse you. but its complete now:

Name: Evie Zorb
Age: 24
Specialty(ies): Have only just started designing but if I had to pick, it would be kitchens.
EPs & SPs: I have ALL!

The Curious house was one of the oddest buildings I have ever seen. Some could say it was an eyesore and others could just say it was a work of art. To me, it needed a lot of work!

I demolished all the towers and extra floors, there were no need for some many floors! I wanted the house to be simple yet modern.

CC used: Maxis Match Inner Atmos Sideboard.

Living Area:
CC used: Maxis Match Bookcase.

Dining Area/Kitchen:

CC: Counter recolours

I made all three areas in one space for easy access and when the new arrival comes, it is easier to watch the baby, cook and work at the same time.

Bedroom - Lazlo:
CC: Bedframe, side table and wardrobe recolours.

Even though Lazlo is a bit of a geek, he is also very keen on sports and cherishes the time he was at university where he was played a lot of it so his room picks up on that.

Bedroom - Vidcund:
I found out that he likes things all need and tidy so I designed a very simple bedroom with just the bare necessities for him.

Bedroom - Pascal:
Pascal will be sharing his room with the new bundle of joy so kept the room manly yet child friendly.

Upstairs Bathroom:

Ground Floor Plan:
Consists of hallway, downstairs bathroom, Pascal's bedroom, Vidcund's bedroom, living/dining/kitchen area.

First Floor Plan:
Consists of upstairs hallway (which is also used as another working area for the brothers), Pascal and new baby's bedroom, upstairs bathroom, workshop, balcony areas for stargazing, spot of chess, experimenting with new plants, exercising, catching the odd thunder strike and general balcony views.

Great entries ineedalife and Michie. Working on your avvies.

EDIT: http://forums.sims2community.com/showpost.php?p=1192478&postcount=40
Your avvies are done.

Wow, so many newbies here. Can't wait for someone to get a star. Remember, if you have to drop out, post here or PM me. Don't leave us hanging (judging from experience, newbies usually leave after the apps or the 1st round...just an observation, nothing against you)

3rd Jun 2008, 4:17 AM
Thats a really great entry Michie!

Can we post our round ones now or do we have to wait? I'm not entirely finished, I was just wondering.
Also, can we use terrain paint this round? Sorry if this has been asked, I just want to be 100% clear on the fact lol.

3rd Jun 2008, 5:01 AM
1. Yes, you may post your Round 1s now.
2. Only Maxis terrain paint, no CC terrain paint (for all rounds).

3rd Jun 2008, 12:07 PM

Hi, I’m Link Rossi. New to the designing world, The Curious House is my first ever design. Although I have never done this before I prefer designing bedrooms because I fel that I where you can truly show a persons personality.

I have all EPs, glamour, Teen life and Family fun

The curious house is an incredible design, it’s very modern and I love the sci-fi look. I wanted to keep this look when redesigning the house but I also wanted to add more space and a more family friendly area. I enclosed the towers and made them glass while adding elevators too make the journey easier. I also changed the brick to cream stucco to try and make the building blend more with the surroundings.

For the downstairs I created a good sized kitchen/dining room, a small living room, a bathroom, a green house and Vidcund’s Bedroom.

The kitchen is modern and family friendly with all the appliances that are needed to make life easier. With seating for six and a high chair there is enough space for the family and guests they would like over.

The living room is small but usable with sofas, a TV and a stereo. I like the blue theme in this room as it adds colour and livens up the room.

For Vidcund’s bedroom I followed his wishes and gave him a simple and masculine room with every thing he needs to gain knowledge. (CC – floor)

There is also a modern family bathroom.

Upstairs there are the other bedrooms and a games room/study

There is a large study/games room that can accommodate the whole family. There is a pool table for their enjoyment as well as lots of different skill building activities and a couple of computers.

Lazlo’s room is very bright and fun as he is not a studious as his brothers. It has a very exuberant colour scheme that I think suits his personality.

Pascal has recently come back from a holiday to Twikki where he fell in love with the style. I have reflected this in his room by creating a tropical yet masculine bedroom.

The babies room (a boy in my game) is simple and cute with a blue theme perfect for a baby boy.

Outside there is a large patio with BBQ, chess and a pool for those hot desert days. There is also a swing for when the kiddo grows up.

Sorry for the odd sized pics - if needed i will change them and also sorry for the double post.

Great app, Seemingly_Innocent. Come and get your avi on the avvies post.

I am almost done my Suburban House. All I have left is about 50% of the interior. Can't wait to see what everyone did.

4th Jun 2008, 8:28 PM
I'm almost done as well, I just have the finishing touches to the interior and then the outside to decorate. Can't wait to see everyone elses apps!

Hey duderocks, I dont know if this is possible, but I would really like at least one judges comments before round one ends to see what I need to improve on. I can understand if this isn't possible since apps are still open, but maybe they could just comment on the ones already done and then if anybody else submits an application, they can comment on theirs then? I don't know if that would be too much work or not though, lol. I totally understand if its not possible.
Just a thought I had. =]

5th Jun 2008, 1:54 AM
I'll PM the judges tomorrow. I was supposed to do that 2 days ago, but If no apps come today, comments will be in tomorrow or Friday. ;)

5th Jun 2008, 2:26 AM
We need to spread the word. I'm almost done with my suburban house i just want Jan to make some pottery etc for the home but it takes so long and insim didn't add that to the update unfortunately so i'll see what happens.

5th Jun 2008, 2:50 AM
Everyone is doing a really great job! I look forward to seeing what you all can do in the next round! :D

5th Jun 2008, 4:07 AM
I am working on my App right now. :P

I'll try to have it in tomorrow after school.

Great Apps so far everyone!

I am back! The boss had me working hard to complete the Smith House early. Something about a toothache and a dentist appointment. What's a dentist? I bet it has something to do with motherlodes and boolprop. Oh well, sims that argue with the boss end up swimming in a pool with no ladder.

Anyways enough about that, I am back but this time in suburban mode. I even bought a dress to help me get into the mindset. Want to see what I have done to make the Smith's house better? Of Course you do!
Take a look at that back yard. I think I made it better by adding a little garden for fresh vegetables and fruit. I think Mr.Smith needs some fiber in his diet. He is positively green the entire time I was there. I added a spa for romantic getaways for two with those lovebirds.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/smith/firstfloorsmith.jpg (( the only cc is the music room wall paper))

I love this deck. I think I made a very blah space and gave it life, coziness and function. Ms. Smith suggested the telescope. She told me you never knew when the kids might want to vist their grandparents. I didn't get it but Humans are silly.

The Kitchen I think is very warm with lots of storage, function and a cozyiness that perhaps you don't expect in a large kitchen.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/smith/littlegirlsroom.jpg The Smith's little Princess got a very pink room but with a few minor changes could easily become a teenage hang out.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/smith/livingroom-1.jpg The Living room was for me the biggest challenge. I wanted to keep the room open and yet separate from the dining kitchen area. I switch the furniture around to create a flow and used the fish tank as a see thru barrier.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/smith/masterbath.jpg The Master bath. I took out the door in Jenny's sewing room so I could create a large romantic master bath. Through the arch is a tub and shower. Double sinks help in the morning.

This study was originally just wasted space. I turn it in a cozy little study that anyone of the Smiths would feel comfortable in.

That is the Spider treatment on the Smith house. I hope they recommend me to someone else in the neighborhood.!

(( added pictures to the app to make it legal))

Great entry, Anebrd! Can't wait for the others.

Keeping up with the Jones's?? More like Keeping up with the smiths. Jan is a lovely woman but very much the stepford wife. Perfect house, perfect lawns, perfect wife, perfect mother. Jan liked to see an open living plan, lot's of fresh flowers around her house and pristine gardens. Very much the homemaker, sewing room and all.

Pyramid hedges and topiary hedges and cupid maxis downloads from the exchange. Mix of permitted CC outdoor plants.

Top floor~

Ground Floor~

Starting with the ground floor we have the entrance:
Maxis lost bouquet near piano, maxis recols, autodrape recols to match HP's default bedding (allowed by duderocks) Florist station bouquet. Bouquets are all through the house so i won't mention them in each pic.

Living area: Jan likes pastels and floral but i threw in a splash of yellow to break it up a touch.
Maxis recols.

Dining and kitchen~
Maxis recols. Bouquet.

Bathroom with spa room through arch~
Maxis recols, drapes recols and bouquet.

And master bedroom~

Upstairs we have the sewing room, complete with items painstakingly made (with love) by Jan on the pottery wheel, curtains and bear from the sewing machine.

The second small bathroom. Sorry for the elongated pic.

Teen boys bedroom, complete with entertainment corner and posters of his heritage which can't be seen from this angle~

Mummy's little princesses room~
Maxis recols.

Play corner~she has the best of everything this kid.

Sorry for the overload of pics, i guess that's what happens when doing a whole house. I think all wallpaper and flooring is CC. If anyone wants to ask about a particular item i recoloured most of the stuff myself so i can tell you which maxis item it is :)

Arrgghhh....I need to get a move on! Doing the application poofed me out already (I under estimated how long it actually takes) but it will be fun. ^_^

Great work by everyone so far.

Name of Designer: Lemon Pie Microwave Doritos Madonna Cunningham. Or Lemon, for short. Please excuse my parents for saddling me with such an awkward name. They were new to this plant, and they jumbled together the most "human" sounding name they could.
Age: 7, but my species matures quickly.
Specialty: I learned to sew when I was 7 months old and I just love it. I sew as much of my materials as possible. Bedding is always custom made by me. I love designing cushy, comfortable beds that are perfect for lounging in all day long!
EPs and SPs you have: Everything but Uni and FFP.

Here's my head shot. Sorry for glancing away during the shot, I'm easily distracted.

So, the Curious boys were in need of major home makeover. Seems an unplanned pregnacy changed their priorities. I talked it over with the boys, and we decided that the house was looking dated. So were drew up some new plans and called in the builders.

These guys love structure and hieght, so I gave it to them. They also love the desert, so we chose warm, sandy colors, and made sure to plant lots of heat loving plants to give the yard some life.

The seemingly random pathways around the house were important to them (something about patterns that can be seen from the sky), so I kept those and added a few more to form a front walkway.

Now then, to the interior, first floor. The entire house was built around the atruim, which has an elevator at it's center.

Here we can see the kitchen. It's bright and playful, and includes a bar for casual dining. The boys confessed that they order pizza way more than actually cook in, so this was important.

But I couldn't resist adding a dining room. It's small, cozy, and formal enough for hosting holiday dinners for the family.

Next up, we have Pascal's bedroom. Even though he's a new father, he's still a kid at heart himself. His room is a dedication to everything he loves: knowledge, the vast, unfathomable expanse of space and toys!

Vidcund and Lazlo are another story. They were looking for something more mature. Since they're extreamly close, the requested to share one room. After talking with them, we decided that thier room should reflect the natural landscape of the desert, and reflect it's mystery and magic.

Next, or course, is Baby Curious' room! He lives up to his namesake, so I kept things colorful and interesting. At the request of dad, I added star elements to remind the little tyke of where he came from.

As a matter of nessesity, of course there is a bathroom. It' clean and masculain.

And in the center of the house is the atrium. It's the workcenter, and has a little bit of everything.

Onto the second floor.

All three brothers admitted that they have a hard time meeting women outside of the online games they play. So in order to make things easier, I gave them a romantic rooftop bar.

And, of course:

The third floor.

Since these boys love being close to the stars, I built the living room at the very top of the house.

Phew, what a project! But it was all worth it, because everyone was very pleased with results. Right about now, I'd like to climb into one of those cozy beds, but I'm off to start my next project instead. I'll see everybody soon!

Love, Lemon.

Specialty:Well I never went to design school, I just always had a knack for design. Living rooms are probably my specialty, I love for a place where the whole family can get together.
EPs and SPs you have: All EPs. Family Fun, Glamour, H&M, Christmas, and Kitchen & Bath Stuff Packs.
Headshot of Designer:

This is what the floorplan looks like. I removed alot of the diagonal walls and replaced them with straight walls. It was much easier to place furniture and navigate around the home.

On the outside of the house, the giant tower's were removed. They seemed to not fit in with the new look we have the house. Sparse vegetation was placed in the yard.
(CC: Rocks in gardening section)

We'll start with the living room, this was one of my favorite rooms to do. I love the light wood and the two pieces of art we found next to entertainment center were irresistable.

I added in a wall to separate the dining/kitchen area from the TV area. It seemed so akward with a dining table and entertainment center in the same room. This was one of my favorite paint jobs we did in the house.

The bathroom looks totally different. We ditched those lime green tiles for new white, sleek tiles. Also, we removed the shower and added a bath.

With the Pascal expecting a little alien, I figured that a UFO design fit perfectley. Plus I wasn't exactley sure if aliens even had genders like humans.

This is Pascal Curious' room. I loved the idea of a lodge feeling for his bedroom. He was looking for a place to relax, and I didn't think black tiles and white bricks made for a relaxing space.

((Hope I did ok :P))

Makeover of the Curious house:

This house was in serious need of a makeover, it was way too cold and sterile, and not functional for a new baby! I kept the boys' geeky style but made it a little more chic by using a simple and clean modern design with retro touches.

{cc: flooring, plants, table recolor}

I kept the outdoor area simple by using minimal, but effective landscaping. I added a pool for those scorching desert summers with rounded edges to contrast the hard angles of the house. There is a table and chairs set and also an outdoor grill to enjoy.

First Floor

Througout the whole house I relpaced ugly tile with wood floors to make the house more cozy. The living room feautures a tv and also a stereo and a synthesizer for making some funky techno beats.

Deleting everything is getting to be too difficult. So can I make a lot of the same size, and move the Smiths there?

You can build the house..You don't have to move the Smiths in.

6th Jun 2008, 4:33 AM
The Smith's home was rather easy to decorate, they wanted a homey, suburbian look and feel to the home.
We decided not to change the layout of the home much, but we did change around the dining room and living room quite a bit.
As they are growing a little older, their bedroom is on the first floor, with a personal bath to the side.
The living room and kitchen have a much nicer look to them now, and more sitting space.
The kitchen also looks more homey now.
Also, with a new grandchild on the way, we changed the side room into a nice little play room.
The second floor wasn't changed much either, except making the four bedrooms into two, and cutting off the extra space in the bathroom.
Jill's room is all pink. Its her favorite color, she told me this about five times the little cutie.
The Smiths are in the process of adopting a child, about jill's age, so we gave her room with just the basics.
In the upstairs bathroom, we updated the appliances, and put a nicer plant in.
In the backyard we changed the tile, patio furniture, and even painted the pool walls. We also added a table and chairs to the porch for during the summer.

6th Jun 2008, 5:29 AM
Ineedalife, I LOVE your playroom idea. I am going to do that to my smith house now. (( No worries- I have already turn in my round 1))

The Smiths were a lot easier than I though they would be... They seem so abnormal but they're really an average Strangetown family. They liked their house on the outside pretty much but wanted some small changes so we removed the yellow siding and put up a green that doesn't clash so much with the desert around it. Since they do live in a desert, we didn't give them too many plants, but we did plant some trees in the front and back and put some simple flower beds in.
CC: Flower beds, siding & windows/doors (Maxis Match by Marylou)

First up is the kitchen & dining room. I went with light woods and light colored appliances to keep the tone of the room nice. With the red walls, the light colors blend nicely. We also added a sitting area in the empty space across from the dining area, so that they can chat with their friends while dinner is cooking.
CC: Floors/walls, recolors of teapot & argust soldier paintings
CC: Walls/floors
CC: Walls/floors

The Smiths said they wanted typical suburban as their theme, but in deference to their oddities, we did their living room comfortable in a seventies style that fit all of them.
CC: Walls/floors

We went with a contemporary Asian theme in the master bedroom with blues and whites. A sitting area and attached bath finish off the room.
CC: Walls/floors, bedding, painting recolor, asian lamp recolor

Since Johnny has just become an adult, we did his room in blues & browns to give it a more "adult" tone. Johnny also loves sports so we framed some of his jersey's and put them up on the wall. Both his and his sisters room have sliders to the balcony.
CC: Walls/floors, bedding

Jill is just about to transistion to teen, so we went with a simple theme of pinks and purples that are grownup and yet still girly. All her favorite posters are here and book shelf to satisfy her love of literature.
CC: Walls/floors, bedding

The kids bath is our favorite room in the house. Blue tiles and funky string lights! Great for both kids to share.
CC: Walls/floors, bathtub default replacement

The backyard has been updated with new tiles and a new, simpler take on the deck. A soccer goal, swingset and dog house were added and the pool updated with a slide and rounded edges, all the while Mrs. Smith babbling something about "updating for Seasons"... We're not sure either.
CC: Walls, bushes
CC: Tiles, bushes, swingset is a preorder item

Hope everything's ok! Tell me if there's anything missing!

I really enjoyed working with the Smith Family, and felt that they had what was already a lovely home to work with.
Most of The Original House structure has been retained with only a few minor bullding changes to the outside(To allow a garage to be built)

Here is the Overview of their new home: Quite a few things are different outside I painted the house a more subtle colour and added lots of outside decoration. Another key extension is the new garage which I feel is definately part of a suburban home and is what the family needs to store their family car.

Still on the Outside View of the house, Here is the backyard: Not much has changed apart from a greenhouse so that the family can enjoy the summer growing their own veg. I decided that the garden should not change much as I wanted plenty of space for the kids to play around in.

Here is The front of the Property: This was also pretty much the same apart from a few plants added to make it more pleasant.

Onto the downstairs interior: As you can see This has been opened up a lot to allow a nice large family living room to be included. I Opted for wooden flooring throuout the room as I fell that this is not only more managable than carpets it is also more modern.

The Living room itself is very neutral, warm and cosy: I moved things around a bit to allow for a space for watching TV, and a space to sit on the rug by the fire, for reading e.c.t.

With the kitchen I wanted to again create a space where the family can be together. The island is perfect for casual meals and for family breakfasts. Again I wanted to continue the light wood theme in this room and feel that the black accessories go well to create a feeling of cleanliness in the room.

Onto the Dining room/excise machine. Ok so this is not a very immaculate Dining room, but The family wanted somewhere to place the exersise machine and this is where it ended up. There is still a table for them to eat at and the decor is not too bad, but it could have been neater, however the family will still enjoy the room for its purpse and it is in perfect position for meals to be brought through from the family kitchen.

Finally moving onto the upstairs:

Pollination and Jenny?`s room needed to be more modern and practical so I thought I would go with a pale shade of green, The room is now far more sofisticated and adult like.

The kids rooms also saw some changes, with a cool blue room for johnny and a pinkish room for jenny. The rooms are only small and so it was hard to fit everything in, but This also means that the rooms are more cosy and liveable.

The bathroom is now more elegant and practical and is very modern. Again Neutral colours have been used in this room to make it more relaxing and modern. I added a normal Tub, as well as a shower, counters and of course a toilet.

Great entries, photo and simsimsims.

7th Jun 2008, 1:02 PM
Hiya it’s really good to be back and to be designing another house. This time the Smith house was very different. It was suburban and in my opinion quite boring. I didn’t like the floor plan or the house itself so, with the consent of the P.T and Jen, I knocked it down and started fresh. (maxis match windows)

The downstairs is large and airy. There is a big kitchen/diner, a living area, a master bedroom, a bathroom and an arts and crafts room.

For the Kitcen/dining room I created a large country feel. The kitchen has all of the workspace they could require and all the mod cons. The dining area has enough seats for the family so they can sit and eat together.

The living room is perfect for spending time as a family. (recoulered sofas)

The arts and crafts room is mainly for Jen. It can allow her to follow her passion or pottery and sewing. There is also and easel that the whole family can use.

For the master bedroom I went with a simple country feel once again. It is peaceful and very accessible which I think the couple need.

Upstairs there are the kid’s rooms and a joint bathroom.

Jill’s room is perfect for the family’s little princess. Pink and cute with a place to practice her ballet.

Johnny’s room reflects his personality as he is obsessive about sports. Memorabilia everywhere it’s a sports paradise.

The joint bathroom is bright a lively just what kids need to wake them up each morning, ready for school.

Outside there is a pond for relaxing and fishing.

And round the back there is a pool and also a place for family BBQ and games.

Unfortunately, real life combined with completing my entry for SHCR rendered me unable to PM he judges for application comments. Apologies to those who asked for comments. :(

The Smith's house was a lot of fun to do. It was a nice splash of suburbian lifestyle, in the middle of a desert. Call it an oaisis. That was my mission. To make it an oasis. Not only supply the Smith's with beautiful vegitation but open up the house and make it much more elegant.

They asked me personally, to redo their entire floorplan. Make it more luxorious and give it a fresh feel.

REMINDER: Round 1 ends tomorrow @ 11:00 PM.

Unfortunately, real life combined with completing my entry for SHCR rendered me unable to PM he judges for application comments. Apologies to those who asked for comments. :(

Oh thats quite alright! I'm sure everybody understands =]

I'll have my entry in today. I have all the pictures and stuff I just have to choose which ones to use because I have almost 20, lol.

7th Jun 2008, 5:56 PM
Well, when I first drove up to the Smith house, I didn't quite understand why they didn't live in Pleasantview or somewhere like that. But upon meeting the family...well, I got why it was called Strangetown.

I completely demolished the exterior and interior for the Smiths. I liked the look of their old house, something was...missing, I should say.

The layout was changed. Jenny confided to me that she would love, love to be able to expand her cooking skills, so that had me have the kitchen larger, and move the bedroom upstairs, and expand the family room.

The living room was arranged that Jenny could entertain guests and cook at the same time.

Family room. [TV on fireplace.]

I added a den so the children could study peacefully, and have a chic place to do so.

The porch was added for Jenny and PT9 to relax with the children on a hot Strangetown summer day.

Upstairs, due to the addition of Jenny and PT9's bedroom, it has changed....

Master. PT9 wanted a large desk and a telescope. Communication with his parents, or something.

Master Bath.

The children's rooms.

Little Princess wanted a place to play house, so I built her this.

Hall bath [sorry if it seems rushed, it's cuz it is.]

The backyard is something the family can enjoy, along with a Jacuzzi for PT9 and Jenny.

[CC; Plants, floors, walls, porch table, some wall hangings, waterfall, and hammock.]

Done! I'll be glad if I make it past this round, look at all those amazing entrees.

7th Jun 2008, 6:12 PM
The Smith's home was alright to begin with, but it had too much unutilized space and it made the home feel empty. So with the Smith's permission, we knocked down the study on the left side of the house and added in walls to separate some very large rooms. I felt that the yellow siding was too bright for the home and we toned it down with some white siding. I also took care of the landscaping as well.

This is the floorplan for the second floor.

This is the floorplan for the first floor.

We'll start out with the living room/entry. Because we demolished the study, we added in some study elements into the living room. Jill said she always wanted to learn to play the piano so we added one into the room.

If you follow through the archway from the living room, you will find yourself in the dining room. We chose a light wood with lighter paint and carpeting.

The old kitchen was very outdated and didn't have a very suburban feel to it. We took care of that with a sleek, silver counters and modern appliances. My favorite piece in this room would have to be the rug.

The master bedroom was decided on red walls and dark wood furniture. We got rid of the fireplace and added in a rug. I'd never heard of a fireplace in a bedroom before.

This is the downstairs bathroom. We tried to go for a white bathroom that felt more modern than before. We also rearranged the layout of the bathroom and location of the toilet and bathtub.

Here we have Johnny's bedroom, because of his interest he showed in sports we gave him a football themed room.
CC: Maxis 27" TV removed from stand.

This is Jill's bedroom, it was actually my favorite to do. She didn't really have alot of toys, but we took care of that. Jill is in love with pink so thats the color scheme we chose.

We decided on a fun, interesting feel for the pool. We added rounded corners and added in an island for lounging around and crankin' up the tunes on those hot summer days.

7th Jun 2008, 11:18 PM
Ok, lets try this again for the fourth time, lol.

I had a fantastic time working with the Smith Family. They were very nice and helpful!

I didn't do much to the outside of the house, just updated the siding and changed the landscaping.

To the back I added a "Band house" for Johnny for the band he and his friends just started.
Inside of bandroom: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/IceAngel12891/clubhouseinside.jpg

Jill begged me to have a treehouse built for her, so I requested her wishes. Her mom thought the ladders were unsafe, so I added some stairs.
Inside of treehouse: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/IceAngel12891/treehouseinside.jpg

On the bottom floor of the house I didn't change any walls as I felt it flowed very nicely.
Since the children got their own "rooms" outside, I added a special room for mom and a special room for dad.
Moms room: Since Mom enjoys arts & crafts so much I added a flower booth, pottery wheel, and a sewing machine to her room.
Dads room: Dad asked for his own office, complete with a tv and dart board
Living Room: I made the living room very family friendly. As you can see the Smiths decided to add a cat to their family!
Kitchen: In the Kitchen I updated all of the counters and appliances. I gave it a very "homey" feel.
Dining room: The dining room was done using a light shade of green.
Master bedroom: This room has a very cozy and inviting feel to it. There is a place at the front of the bed where mom and dad can settle down and enjoy a nice book.
Master Bath: This bathroom is also cozy and inviting with the deep reds and the clawfoot tub!

Upstairs I knocked down and added some walls in effort to fufill the families wishes for bigger bedrooms.
Jills room I moved to the opposite side of the upstairs and made it extremely girly and fun!
Johnny's room is all boy! It is very "surferish".
The upstairs family bath is very clean and simple:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/IceAngel12891/upstairsbathroom.jpg

Additional images for your viewing pleasures!:
(since there are so many and these aren't exactly detremental to the outcome of the round)
Hall bath downstairs: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/IceAngel12891/hallbath.jpg
Creativity Room: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/IceAngel12891/creativityroom.jpg

The only CC I used was walls & floors and in the tree house I used the kite from the toybooth.

Please tell me if there are too many pictures or too many links (I figured the links would be alright since they are just extras) so I can change them before the round ends, thanks! Also, are the pictures too big? They seem too big to me..

IceAngel12891, that tree house is so cool! I especially love the inside of it.

Thanks! Its my favorite part of the house, lol.
I wasn't so sure about the tree, but it was the only sutible one that I had and it worked out fine.

The Smiths are one of the nicest families I have ever met. They made me feel really welcome so I wanted to make a very special house for them and boy am I tired after remaking their home.

Front of House:

I also took a night shot if anyone wants to take a peek:

Back of House:
CC: fence, roof and front door recolours, flower boxes extract from the seasons window.

Ground - Floor Plan:

I made quite a lot of changes from the original house. I made quite a few areas smaller like the living room as there was just too much space and nothing to fill it with. The only thing I kept the same was the pool except the tiling as that was looking a bit dated.

CC: Coat hanger recolour, maxis match ferns.

A nice bright and warm hallway to make it inviting for anyone who enters the house.

CC: counter, fridge, cooker and easel recolours, picture is recolour of the small painting that came with Free Time, maxis match table (smaller one with flowers).

Jenny’s favourite room in the house as she loves to cook. I made the kitchen very clean and simple so all colours are very neutral, leaving the main focus on the food and Jenny herself.

Craft Room:
CC: Pictures are poster recolours.

This room is tucked away in part of the kitchen so anyone in the family can have some time alone to concentrate on bit of sewing or pottery (not pictured) if they wanted to.

Downstairs Bathroom:
CC: mirror recolour, shower (edit of the cheap shower).

Living Room:

CC: Maxis match lamp, flower pot, side table, ferns, pictures are recolours of the silver kettle/tea pot picture, recolours of piano and curtains.

A very important room in the house. This is the place where everyone gets together for some family time. I tried to make the room feel very cosy and family orientated.

Sun Room/Conservatory:

Plant potting area: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v124/Peeka/SC/conserv2.jpg
CC: recolours of the couches, Maxis match plants, extracted plant watering can

My favourite room so far. A place to relax, enjoy the sun, bird watching and keeping an eye the children without having to go outside.

PT9 is a very keen gardener and I thought it would be nice to create an area for him inside the house which is perfect on a day when the weather has a hard time making its mind up!

First - Floor Plan

PT9 and Jenny’s Bedroom:

CC: Extracted Maxis perfume bottles, hair brush, ring box and photos. Maxis matching mirror.

I moved PT9 and Jenny’s bedroom upstairs. I wanted to give the room a slightly romantic feel to it like the couple they are so I chose the colour of red and the rest of the furniture in a very pale wood colour to help accentuate it.

Jill’s Room:

CC: Extracted toys on shelfs, Maxis match BV shelf and curtains, poster, table, chair and blinds recolours.

Jill is your typical little girl - loves all things that that are pretty and cute so her room is very much like that with the colour scheme of pink, purple and white. I also gave her extra shelves so she could show off her wonderful doll collection.

Johnny’s Room:

CC: Curtains and poster recolours, Maxis match BV shelf and extracted toys and ‘crazy’ clutter.

Johnny is your average teenage boy (minus the green of course) and is a bit of a joker. Like with Jill, there is extra shelf space for Johnny to put up his prized planes and helicopters and his practical joke toys.

Upstairs Bathroom:
CC: Blinds and towels recolour, Maxis bath (edited to be backless).

Outside Deck Area:
CC: Table and chair recolours.

Somewhere to gaze at or study the stars at night. A small eating space when the barbeque is going.

PT9’s Vegetable and Fruit Patch:
This is at the side of the house but close enough to the front of the house so passing neighbours can envy the delicious fruit and vegetables that PT9 grows.

Camp Area:
Whilst getting to know the family, I found out that Johnny and PT9 would like to spend some father and son time together but haven’t had the chance so I created a camping area for them in the back garden not so far away should Jill or Jenny need either of them.

Right, I’m off to bed now. I need to make edits but I’ll do that before the deadline tonight.

8th Jun 2008, 7:07 AM
Thats a really great entry, Michie! I love the camping area.

The Smith House

The Smith's are your typical suburban family, well, in most regards :) Their home hadn't been updated since they first moved in. It was clear they needed major rennovations, almost their whole house was covered in carpet, even the kitchen! Needless to say, I pulled out most of that carpet and put down hardwoods instead. I love the result, I think it will really suit the Smith family and their needs.

http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/4711/smithhouseca4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I gave the exterior a craftsman-style makeover. I added more landscaping to really showcase the green grass that you can only find at the Smith house. Regarding floor plans, The exterior walls of the first floor were almost completely unchanged. Inside though, the floor plan is completely changed to add an entry way and an open dining, kitchen, living area. There is also a new library/study. The upstairs was greatly expanded for a 'rec room' and the kids rooms as well as a bonus room for Jenny.

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2429/smithbackyardmu9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The backyard ended up being my favorite part of the house! I extended the deck for more living space. There is a new slide on the pool for endless hours of fun. There is also a hammock and plenty of loungers for relaxing. I also added a swingset for Jill and a soccer net for Johnny.

{cc: couch to match blue suede armchair, couch recolor, coffee table from life stories objects, rug recolor, painting recolor, poster recolor, decorative vases recolor}

This living area is much more casual than downstairs. The pool table, tv, and gaming system are all the guys need to entertain themselves. There is plenty of cushy chairs in a denim blue fabric to seat the Smith's and plenty of friends.
{cc: couch completer set (loveseat and armchair), couch recolor, tv cabinet recolor, pool table recolor, rug recolor, end table recolor, maxis match end table}

The Smith

The outside of their house was very ugly yellow and it didn't even had place for a car. So I just placed a driveway and colored the whole house perfect white. But because only white is way to boring, I added a really nice stone which you see back in the interior as well)[/I]

De back of the house full of green and the perfect place for a family life.
(CC: Maxis-match fire thingie, plants and recolors of fence and arches)

Aerial first floor

Aerial second floor

Aerial top floor

The livingroom of the Smith household was a big parade of ugliness, so I gave them a very dark and warm hardwood floor. I wanted to go dangerous with the walls and made them dark green. Instead of working away the stone of the fireplace I tough it fit in the room. I think it looks very comfy.
(CC: Wall&Floor, recolors table and chairs.)

On the right side of the stairs is the kitchen, dining area and telephone corner. It had to have a certain calmness.
(CC: recolors of chairs, table and coffeecup extracted from game itself.)

Master bedroom, very calm so PT9 can enjoy his pension life better.
(CC: Recolor of wardrobe and bed, floor)

Bathroom attached with the bedroom. It's like the bedroom very calm and relaxing.
(CC: maxis-match bathtub by Holy Simoly, floor and recolor of maxis counter)

On the second floor, Jill's room is situated. Jill told me she wanted to swim with dolphins and become a underwater welder, as I couldn't give her a huge swimming tank with dolphins and metal, I decided to give her an aquarium.
(CC: Bedding, wall&floor)

the other side of her rooms also contains a computer (online welding course?).
(CC: Recolors of wardrobe and computer and desk, wall&floor)

Johnny's room is masculine blue and stony. On his desk is his collection of crazy objects.
(CC: recolors of bed and desk and wardrobe and endtable, wall&floor and maxis extracted crazy objects, the one sims play with when there unhappy)

The bathroom is a tropic paradise. It contains a lot of plants a has some exotic touches.
(CC: floor)

And then there's the entertainment room. PG9 wanted to start painting in all of his free time he has now and Johnny wanted to play drums. The piano just stands there for the show.
(CC: Wall, recolor of table and piano)

The top floor contains a gym so Jenny can train all of her pregnancy fat off. It also has a TV to watch while running and a radio to dance.

(Mhh... why does it always look better in game?? XD)

8th Jun 2008, 8:47 PM
Gah, somehow I missed the deadline. Guess I got confused about the server time. It's still the afternoon where I am. Sorry, duderocks. I had fun anyway! Great contest, I will definately keep my eye on this one!

Round 2: From Haunted to Homey, Part 1

The Beaker house

-pic coming soon-

More "homey" exterior
Better decorations
Better furnishings
Make Nervous' room more liveable.
There must be a "lab" with all the skill objects there (at least one object/style)
Decorating style: Airy and Modern

Show your designer in a designing moment (not more than TWO pictures)

Answer this question: What is your favorite decorating style?

9th Jun 2008, 3:05 PM
Yes, that's them.

9th Jun 2008, 10:57 PM
Is the Beaker house 4x4? On this house I am going to be building them something from scratch and I am having a hard time judging the correct size.

9th Jun 2008, 11:18 PM
Michie i love your design:)
You have done an AMAZING job!

9th Jun 2008, 11:25 PM
Anebrd-If you enter the house and go into buy mode there's a little icon in the top left corner that when you click on gives you the lot info :)

I too bulldozed this house but it wouldn't let me place another lot in the same position so i had to move it across. I hope this is ok ?
Such a large lot, having so much trouble building something appropriate.

10th Jun 2008, 12:31 AM
Ugh.... I hate big lots...

I believe its a 5x4 as the info at the top says 500x400... I don't believe that feature was added till a later expansion so that may be why they can't see it. Its also possible they already demolished the lot without checking the info :)

10th Jun 2008, 1:08 AM
scores are coming later, application and round one, correct?

sorry, i'm really confused.

10th Jun 2008, 1:19 AM
idk if we are getting them for the applications anymore...
but I wish the round one scores would get here, lol, I'm so impatient, haha

10th Jun 2008, 11:34 AM
I got all of the scores today. I'll just compile them and post them here later. No app comments, unfortunately. Busy with RL.

10th Jun 2008, 12:23 PM

Unfortunately, grayx3eyedsoul, simsimsims and Seemingly_Innocent are our bottom 3 (due to a tie) and will leave us this round. Good luck in future contests.

Also one of the judges wasn't able to give comments this round (her scores are on the last part for every contestant.

Lily Hampton-

Judge 1:
E: 5/10

There is too much wasted empty space, minimal decorating, and the fountain by the hottub is cc. There is also hardly any landscaping. This home has no life.

Judge 2:
AO: 29
PF: 24
CR: 10
E: 6
Total: 66

I like the house structure. However, there’s too much brown all over the house. Also, there is quite a lot of unutilized space. Try to add more landscaping. I also spot some CC by the hottub.

Judge 3:
Aesthetics and Originality: 20/35
Physics and Functionality of Rooms: 35/40
Compliance with Rules: 14/15

Comments: Your entry appears very rushed and not very well planned out. I like how you have a big open floor plan and rooms, but I would have liked to have seen you make better use of the area. Perhaps try pulling some things away from the walls and using more of the areas. I would also liked to have seen more decorations on the walls, etc. Good job with the rebuilding of the house.

Overall: 76/100

What's with the wierd one tile wide space by the entry? Window and item placement needs improvement.

Judge 2:

Item placement needs more work. Bedrooms seemed to be plain and not “personalized”. Overall, you did okay.

Aesthetics and Originality: 23/35
Physics and Functionality of Rooms: 35/40

Comments: I loved the landscaping and your outdoor decorating. I would have liked to have seen the exercise equipment someplace other than the dining room…perhaps a bedroom or a work-out room? Also…I didn’t see a sink anywhere in the kitchen. I really like the black you used in the kitchen though…it’s always been a personal favorite.

Comments: I really liked your use of color and how each room appeared to have a different color theme. In the livingroom, you added the vase of flowers to add in color, but I feel as though because there is very limited color in the rest of the room, the vase really pulls my attention away from the rest of the room because of it. Perhaps add in a few other items to balance out the intensity of the flowers. Overall, very nice job, I can tell you put a lot of work into this house.

I really wanted to like this home more, the outside and gardens are great, although I would have liked to see planting around the base of the home. The interior layout, especially the second floor needs work. Too many pics.

Comments: I can tell you put some time into this house. I really think you did a nice job with it for the most part. I think my favorite room was the sunroom that you have, but I was a bit iffy on the placing of some of your furniture. I can imagine that the Smiths would love to be able to sit and enjoy looking out the windows of that room, rather than at the wall as it appears when they are sitting on the love seat in there. Though some things in some rooms didn’t necessarily go too well together, I love your choice of colors in the dining room and pictures on the wall. Lookin good!

Some general comments from me and the judges:

gridlines, Gridlines, GRIDLINES. Very bad things.
Please take shots during the day, so the room can be seen clearly.
Don't be afraid to get close up. Use a camera mod if you need to.
Some of the layout shots are taken too far away. How can the judges see the floorplan?

10th Jun 2008, 2:06 PM
Thanks judges and thanks for posting the comments duderocks. Now i can post my round 2 shots lol...well maybe in the morning....too tired from working on that house for so long.
oh may i ask? 2 judges gave me 14/15 for compliance of rules. Which rule was i breaking so i know for future round/s? Thanks :)

10th Jun 2008, 2:11 PM
For the future rounds, take note of this rule:

6. Landscaping must be appropriate for a desert landscape.

This means: NO FLOWERS (exception: wildflowers, plastic flowers, and the cactus that ended up on the "flowers" section in buy mode), NO SHRUBS, and no trees with green leaves (another exception: palm trees)! They can't live on a desert...

Something like these plants by macarossi @ MTS2: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=279227

starwyn, I cannot speak for the other judges, but I have a feeling that this was the rule..

Ough! number 7 :| that's not good

Few questions about round 2

What do you mean with a more homey exterior? A real family house? (not sure if that suits them)

Do we have to keep nervous his room at the same location?

And what is airy??

10th Jun 2008, 2:38 PM
Ahh well :) It was a really fun first contest for me and I cant wait to Enter some more:) Thanks Duderocks for being such an excellent host, and I wish the rest of the contestents good luck in the next rounds.

10th Jun 2008, 2:48 PM

1. Not necessarily. Just warm up the atmosphere of the house a little bit.
2. No, you don't have to keep Nervous in the basement.
3. Quite spacious, but not too empty-looking.

Well, the Smith's house would have been the only exception to this rule, because of the "magical" green lawns...although, come to think of it, the Specter family has a rather green lawn too, if I recall.

shoot. i finished the beaker house.

good luck to all the other contestants.
this was a fun first contest!

10th Jun 2008, 5:24 PM
ooo, I completely forgot about that desert landscape thing too, I didn't think all the deserty plants would go with the Smith's grass, I guess no one else has grass so this won't be a problem in future rounds :)

edit: i don't think the specter house has grass, maybe in the graveyard?

10th Jun 2008, 6:23 PM
Went in game to check, it's just the grave yard that has grass; must be all those rotting corpses...yummy! (ick!) lol!

10th Jun 2008, 11:52 PM
lol i assumed flowers etc were ok for the last round too considering the lush green lawn they had :)
Ok so i finished my beaker house very light very 'airy' and now i see it's meant to have a warm atmosphere LOL mine is rather cold i think. I've already rebuilt the house 3 times so i don't know i i am able to fix this...i'll see what i can do. :(

Edit: forgot to ask-since i am so bad at roofs(sp) lol i know this as my houses get rejected from mts2, how does the individualroofslope cheat work? it works for the regular one but it doesn't seem to work for an individual roof. If anyone can help me on this that would be great :) I'm assuming these are the cheats mentioned in my comments?

Edit: forgot to ask-since i am so bad at roofs(sp) lol i know this as my houses get rejected from mts2, how does the individualroofslope cheat work? it works for the regular one but it doesn't seem to work for an individual roof. If anyone can help me on this that would be great :) I'm assuming these are the cheats mentioned in my comments?

Well, first place the roofs you want, then in the cheat box type in "IndividualRoofSlopeAngle xx" where xx is the slope you want from 15 to 75. (you don't need the capital letters, those are just to make it a bit easier to read). Next, holding ctrl/alt click on the individual roof you wish to change with the roof tool; and the slope should change. It will take practice getting to know what angles you need for what. To get a roof to come to the base of most shorter windows is usually around 22, an angle of 71.5 will create a slope that will only need one tile to reach wall height (great for gambrel roofs, the kind usually seen on Dutch Colonial homes or on barns) and a slope of 56.3 is a 2 tile slope, and 45 is the standard 3 tile slope. Those 4 are probably the ones you will use the most.

Another trick to roof placement is to place the roof for any lower level BEFORE adding anything else to the current level, even stairs to the lower level. That way you avoid the "can't intersect other objects" error message.

ie: place any roofing for the first floor before adding anything other than the second floor walls and roof.

See how the roof "connects" directly to the walls? It's because the roof of the first floor actually goes through the second floor, if we removed the second floor walls and roof, the first floor would already be completely roofed.

All windows, stairs and other objects were placed AFTER the roofing was completed.

Edit: You need to place the roof that covers the area "penetrated" by the lower roof before adding objects or you will get "ceiling to low" errors.

REMINDER: Round 2 ends on June 14, 10:30 PM...Better get those entries in. ;)

11th Jun 2008, 2:27 PM
Thankyou very very much kattenjin. That has been driving me nuts for a very long time now. for this round however i have used a flat roof and half wall but i will definately try those cheats out next chance i get :)

duderocks. My entry is complete, i just need to edit the pics and post them. I went back in game tonight to try and make my house more 'homey' but i just couldn't do anything with what i already had as i made it 'airy' like the post said :( with any luck i can still get a pass lol if not well, i tried my best. I put a great lot of effort into that house and once you see the structure you will understand how i couldn't alter it *sigh*
I'll post my pics in the morning :)

11th Jun 2008, 2:40 PM
starwyn, "Homey" in the Beaker house sense meant a less "cold and heartless" atmosphere the original house used to have...Not necessarily like a family home, but you can do that as well. The 'airy and modern thing is more on the interior design.

I can't wait to see your work... :D

11th Jun 2008, 8:07 PM
For the designing moment do you want it to be about the Beaker House? Or just any designing moment?

11th Jun 2008, 10:21 PM
It should be in the Beaker house.

12th Jun 2008, 12:41 AM
Meeting the Beakers at their home it was immediate that something was out of place. Modern day woman/dark dank house. this just wasn't working for me, nor for Circe and after some discussion the house was knocked down and a new one was built. Out with the old, in with the new!
This is a busy family who do not have time to mess around with gardening so we have used plenty of cacti and other desert plants which need little to no attention.

CC: Macarossi's desert plants.

We went in the complete opposite direction from dark and dingy to light and airy.
Entrance~Clean, open and sophisticated.
CC: Rug recolour, maxis match armchairs and recolour.

Living room~Suitable for a childless modern family.
CC: Rug recolour, Drapes (permitted)

Open plan kitchen and dining~Circe loves to cook for her guests so i designed a large open Kitchen with plenty of bench space and easily accessable items opening out to the dining area where she can easily converse with her guests as she prepares the meals.
CC: Maxis match fern, curtain recolour.

Master bedroom ~ Blue and green should never be seen Pfft. Times have changed.
CC: curtain and rug recolour, flowers from flower station.

Nervous' Bedroom~Comfortable and equipped for alone time, which i assume he spends a lot of.

Bathroom~Shades of yellow, again to bring warmth to the house.

The lab~ A sterile enviroment but light and spacious enough to keep the head clear for brewing and inventing!

Aerial veiw~
Plants missing in this shot.

~Task Two~

I wanted to keep a similar colour scheme within the home but added some green shades to bring warmth to the room.

Structures like this bring culture and sophistication to a home.
A real conversation starter.

What is your favorite decorating style?
Hard to say really as i love so many and can be known to combine some styles but if i have to pick one i'd probably say contemporary.

These remodeled Maxis homes are really good, you guys! It makes it very hard to judge. Keep it up! ;)

12th Jun 2008, 4:49 AM
Note: Most of my floors and walls are CC, as are the front door and most of the room doors (Marylou)... Just so I don't have to mention them a million times :D

That castle mess that the Beakers had been living in was just too much for them! They wanted something much smaller and unassuming so we went with an adobe style, one level home to fit their needs.
Much prettier at night :D (http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f138/photo_me2004/Round%20Two/Maxis-Makeover-Front-Nightt.jpg)
Side pathway (http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f138/photo_me2004/Round%20Two/Maxis-Makeover-Side.jpg)
CC: Most plants are CC

The entry, dining and livingroom share a space in this home so the stereo is set up in the entryway for easy access and out of the way sounds. A chair, couch & coat rack make their touches and provide space for guests to toss coats and sit to take off their shoes. The living room is small but very guest friendly, with lots of space to sit and relax. The dining room is plain but functional and provides a view of the living area and the TV
CC: Maxis Match chair & couch, painting recolors and rug recolor

CC: Couches are Maxis Match

CC: Plant on small table and dining table are Maxis Match

The kitchen is clean and simple, with lots of storage space as Circe likes to cook for the family. Black cabinets and black and white appliences set off the warm tile floors.
Upper cabinets are Maxis Match for the counters

The Beakers said that they would only use one car so we turned the inside part of the driveway into their lab... They brought most of their... erm... equipment with them from the old house and set it up out here. We also provided them with a work table, treadmill and bookcase for skilling.
CC: None (Table is two table set together)

For Nervous' room we gave him a more exciting space then he had before... We perceived him as somewhat like a teenager still so we tried to bring that into his room. A color scheme of blue and green is here, with lots of books for him to read in his alone time. He seems to have a lot of that... For his bath, we went with something that could be manly but can be shared as Circe asked for an extra room... Though she wouldn't say what for. We think we might have a guess!
CC: Bedding, bed & dresser recolor, posters and extracted book recolor

CC: White curtain & bathtub recolor

The master bedroom is spacious but still cozy and fun. We gave them lots of colors to brighten up the room. The master bath is big enough for both of them with a separate bath and shower and mirrored bathtub.
CC: Mirror over dresser and lamps on bedsides are Maxis Match, bedding, glass on bedside and box on dresser are extracted and plant on dresser is Maxis Match, rug is three placed on top of each other

CC: None

For the backyard we put in a pool and zen garden for relaxing after those long days in the lab. There's lots of deserty plants to complete the look.
CC: Smaller trees

Designing Moment:

My favorite decorating style is... well I don't really have a specific "style" persay but if I had to call it something, I would call it a mix of semi modern and country. Maybe kind of preppie or upper middle class... Its hard to explain!

12th Jun 2008, 11:08 AM

You have until tomorrow @ 10:30 PM.

As I walked up to the Beaker home, I don't even know if you'd call it a home, I felt so unwelcome and intimidated by this castle of a house in front of me. When I met the family, they were very nice and I realized they wanted a home makeover that reflected that. I brightened up the house from its old stone, castle feel and gave a new modern white one.

A day in Strangetown is always a hot one! I don't know how people can get used to the dry heat, so I added in a pool for comfort and fun!

Ariel Shot of the Upstairs

Ariel shot of ground floor.

Ariel shot of basement (Nervous' room)

This is our lovely modern black & white kitchen. I added in some color using a rug near the fridge.

This is a little dining cove area that is set off from the kitchen. The family can all get together to share meals whenever they'd like, hopefully I'll be invited to a dinner party or two! I immediatley fell in love with the gold curtians and this was the perfect place for them.

Next up we have a red/modern metal themed living room. I used a half wall to separate this area from the entryway so that in the middle of hardwood we didn't have a random square of red carpet. I really felt that the coffee table brought the room together.

Here we have Loki's Lab (:P) we gave him an area separated from the house so he can have some peace and quiet while he carries on with his work.

This is a greenish tiled bathroom. It is located on the main floor, the door nearest to the kitchen.

This is the master bedroom for Loki and Circe. I chose a tan/light wood theme for this room. I love the shape of the bookcase in this room.

This is Nervous Subject's room. He loves music and movies, that why we included so many movie posters and other movie fan decor. I personally love the 8 Ball rug in this room.

Now Circe and Loki have become very fond lately of Nervous and feel very bad for some of the tests they ran on him. They wanted to make it up to him and I decided to make a room that was special for him. Nervious and the Curious brothers formed a band, but couldn't find anywhere to rehearse or record. I took care of that and added in a studio for the band! It has some of the best computers and technology for recording music and it even has insturments too! I've listened to them play and they could become a Strangetown hit!

Task Two

Here I am adding in some green plant life to the room. Plants really seem to help any room gain color and variety, heck they even help the environment! Now that is multi-purpose.

Favorite decorating style: My favorite decorating style would have to be a lodge/rustic style. I love light and dark woods and find myself using them in almost every house!

Greetings and Smiles humans and aliens and everything in between. I, your drow elf designer has had the worst fright of her life- THE BEAKERS! That couple almost had me running back to the spider full caverns of my youth but then I remember I was afraid of spiders.

But enough nonsense, you want to see if this elf can bring it on, so here we go!

A Bat's view of the new and improved Beaker home. It has a much more modern industrial feel that matches the unnatural feelings of this couple and their slave.
This is the Garage and Man Cave. There is much for a man to tinker with(( that doesn't scream. Did I mention Beakers scare me?))http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/Beaker/Sims2EP72008-06-1123-28-43-55.jpg

Nervous is showing off one of the social areas- a poker table/ bar area.--
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/Beaker/Sims2EP72008-06-1219-01-41-01.jpg It was one of the first rooms finished and I had a good time discussing what the Beakers wanted over a friendly game of cards. It helps to have a very friendly relationship with your clients. That is why I let them win. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/Beaker/Sims2EP72008-06-1219-08-09-60.jpg
And I didn't want to end up in their new high tech state of the art lab-http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/Beaker/Sims2EP72008-06-1219-04-21-31.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/Modya/Beaker/Sims2EP72008-06-1219-17-53-48-1.jpg I would say my favorite design style would be Eclectic- filling a home with what you love is so much more important than having a set of matching furniture.

(( There is alot of CC in this house. There is walls and floors, recolor hot tub, rugs, OMSP,lost and found objects, and several of the plants outside. The Names of the modders are atwa, macarossi, buggybooz, numenor, allupo, skye. I think that is everyone. This contest was worthwhile for me, just because I learn about OMSPs. I recommend them to my fellow designers. ))

I spent a really long time on this, I rebuilt it like 3 times, lol.
Also, I think my video card is going caput and the pictures aren't that great because I'm doing this really late and I'm tired. (Real life got in the way of me doing it sooner =\)

This was a very difficult task for me, as I don't usually decorate modern houses. However it was a great learning experience. This house was very dull & grim before and now it is very light & airy!

Exterior: As you can see, we totally rebuilt the house. We added new landscaping also.

In the backyard, we added a very long pool and an outdoor entertaining area:
We also added a hammock area for relaxing: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/IceAngel12891/hammock.jpg (linked because I didn't realize I still had the green thing there, oops)

Overview Downstairs:

I made the floor plan very open and spacious because this family loves to entertain!

Very elegant and modern.

Kitchen with an eat in table:
Very good for entertaining. The kitchen is very modern.

Living room:
Also very modern with the bold colors.

Upstairs is where all the bedrooms and the lab are.

The master bedroom is a very modern, simplistic space to come and relax, as is the adjoining bathroom.

Nervous' bedroom is no longer useless. I built a space perfect for him to enjoy some alone time.
Shot 2 linked because I didn't realize the wall arrow was still in the shot:

The Lab is a great place to come work on whatever needs done!

The hall bath is very modern and sophisticated.

Task Two:
Lilah, hanging up a picture and admiring it.

My favorite design style I'd have to say would be traditional. It just comes to me so well. I like the family feel of it.

CC: None that I can see except for walls and floors.

[[[[This isn't my best work, I know, I appologize, I spent tons of time on it, I just had a lot of things going on]]]]

13th Jun 2008, 8:26 AM
This round was very difficult for me too and i also rebuilt that house 3 times! lol i might keep the next ones in tact if i make the next rounds lol

13th Jun 2008, 12:14 PM
Great entries, contestants. Still expecting half of the entries...

REMEMBER: Round 2 ends tomorrow @ 10:30 PM.

13th Jun 2008, 2:33 PM
Im finding this house really difficult to make over but I'll get my entry in even it means no sleep for me! T_T

(duderocks, you are 6 hours ahead of me)

13th Jun 2008, 2:58 PM
I feel like I've had my game constantly running ever since the round info was posted! I'm almost done, Just have to finish landscaping and adding other little details.

The entries so far look great! They're all so different yet they all really work for the Beakers :)

13th Jun 2008, 3:01 PM
It's now 7 past 10 PM on the Philippines and it's here 7 past 4 PM so your also 6 hours ahead on my and it gives my 24 hours to finish my entry XD

I'm done with the house and I just wanted to take pictures when my game crashed, so I'm going to try again :)

Horrible problem!! I can't enter the house, it crashes when loading the house.
I already tried to put somebody else in the house and load, still crashed.
I put the house in the neighborhood house inventory and it still crashed.
I don't know what to do!!

Please help, because if I would rebuild the whole thing I wouldn't make the deadline and go trough that all basically for nothing.

13th Jun 2008, 5:50 PM
kipsnif Did you download a new object or anything new recently (since you last entered the game)?

13th Jun 2008, 6:00 PM
No, not at all.

Haven't downloaded a thing for a while now.

I had an idea, you think clean installer could help??

13th Jun 2008, 7:22 PM
No, not at all.

Haven't downloaded a thing for a while now.

Its worth a try. I hope you can fix it!

'nuff said.

Task One:

I can see why the Beakers wanted me to makeover their house. I can’t believe that they were living in that monstrosity! I later discovered from Circe that it was once a beautiful castle but Loki had added parts here and there to accommodate the growing number of cables needed to power his experiments due to a new test subject.

This was the beginning of a very long task…very long days and many sleepless nights…

CC: All plants are either Maxis or by Macarossi at MTS. Maxis match windows; doors, windows, half wall, stairs, roof recolours.

Ground Floor:

The first thing I did was tear most of it down. The only part from the original is part of the foundation that was the kitchen but now is the living area. I used the main colours of white, browns and greens. I wanted the rooms to flow into each other but still maintain their own individuality for which I did partly did with the use of bold paintings and plants.

Living Room:

CC: Sofa, tables, rug, painting (small Freetime one) recolours. Numenor modular stairs. Maxis match ferns. Bushy green plant with the white pot is actually a maxis plant with a seperate vase on top of it).

I have really opened up the living room, extending it up to the second floor so this room has a high ceiling and lots of open space.

Inner Hallway:
CC: Coat rack, paintings, table, sofa chair, trophy recolours; Maxis match BV shelf and roses.

CC: Counter, table and chairs recolours.

Couple more lab shots:
CC: Maxis extracted cups, clipboard and books (from TV cabinet in Freetime).

This is only room that did not follow my browns and greens colour theme. I wanted it to be different compared to the others so chose the contrasting colours of black and white. The lab is fairly big and still has room to fit a couple more gadgets. I also created an observation room so that Loki can monitor Nervous’ behaviour after all the ‘health checks’ that Loki has been doing recently.

Downstairs Bathroom:
CC: Counter, bath, shower and curtain recolours, Maxis extracted hanging fern (edited to be a pot plant)

First Floor:

Landing Area:
CC: Small sofa, easel, table, chairs, chess table recolours. Maxis match ferns.

A place for a spot of creativity, a bit brain training with a game of chess or just sitting and having moment to take everything in.

Loki & Circe’s Room:

CC: Bed, side table, lamp, curtains, dresser and painting recolours.

A very calming room which is ideal after a hard day’s work by both.

Nervous’ Room:

CC: Bed, side tables, desk chair, dresser, rug and painting recolours; Maxis extracted ‘crazy’ clutter and BV suitcase. Maxis match table.

I took out the basement (it was a former dungeon) and moved Nervous’ room upstairs. Nervous now has his own proper bedroom. Consists of the basics and there is a desk at one of end of the room where Nervous can now keep together and create all his paper/stick friends.

I also discovered that Nervous has a hobby of collecting food and drink labels so instead of secretly binning them all, I turned them to works of art.

Upstairs Bathroom:
CC Bath, shower, table and curtain recolours.

CC: Barbeque and table recolour.

A very simple patio area to sit and chat, have a barbeque (the people of Strangetown are VERY fond of barbeques) or to gaze at the midnight sky in hopes to see a shooting star or a meet a new extraterrestrial friend.

Task Two:

My shock horror to find that in my perfect white and green bedroom, there was an ugly yellow patterned lamp. (I have yet to find out who put it there.)

Taking some pictures to make sure that the plants are definitely in right position and not too far to one side.

What is your favorite decorating style?
Hmmm….that’s quite hard. I don’t really know what style you would call it but clean, simple yet cosy.

I hope I did ok in this round. I am soooo tired. I am off to bed now (its nearly 10.45am here. I havent slept yet.). Zzzzz.....

14th Jun 2008, 10:46 AM
Yeah, that's fine Michie. Great entry.

14th Jun 2008, 12:36 PM
The Beaker's house before was very unpractical for them. There weren't even any doors, just archways, which was very undesirable for the very private Beakers. I designed their new house is a clean, modern design. The whole house, inside and out, was inspired by nature. I used colors that echoed those in nature and also many natural materials. The result is a warm house that is still modern and fresh.

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/4918/exteriorfrontjw0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The front of the house is a grand statement. I used palm trees to accentuate the height of the house, and a fountain and planters to add interest.

First Floor

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/841/livingroomdj9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The livingroom features a lounge area with a long sectional centered around a fireplace. This is perfect for the entertaining that Circe is going to start doing, with this new house, she can't wait to stop being the mysterious, kooky family and start being a social butterfly!

(cc: couch recolor, chair recolor, extracted books (from FT cabinet), BV vacation souvenir, vase recolor)

http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/5864/tvroomld4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The tv watching area is more intimate with a smaller sectional.

(cc: rug recolor, couch recolor, BV vacation souvenir, extracted remote control, end table recolor)

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/7186/kitchendininghs0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The kitchen and dining is very open to the living area for a very airy feel to the home. The dining area features a solid wood table paired with modern chairs. The kitchen is done in sleek cabinetry to provide contrast to all the wood tones of the house.

(cc: maxis match table, chair recolors, maxis match upper cabinets)

hall bath: http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7354/downstairsbathroomby8.jpg

http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/9344/greenhouseyr9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I added a climate-controlled greenhouse where the Beakers can grow plants that wouldn't survive in desert conditions.

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/4512/masterbedroombq5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The master bedroom is modern and sophisticated with a deep chocolate wall color and a luxurious fireplace and seating area. There is a separate closet connected to the room.

(cc: bedframe recolor, painting recolors, chair recolors, maxis match hosta, plant pot recolors, bedding, maxis match end table, maxis match lamp)

closet: http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5845/closetwl2.jpg

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/4976/masterbathroomwy8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

(cc: life stories stool, vase recolor, orchid recolor)

http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/6307/office2ec1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I gave the Beaker's an office where they could work when they weren't in the lab. It is bright and functional with a desk, work table, and even a coffeepot for those long nights.

(cc: drafting table career reward object, bibliofile bookcase mathcing pieces by windkeeper with book recolors by plasticbox, chair recolors, maxis match table, bamboo edited to be shorter, extracted studio lights)

http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/609/lab2hh3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I moved the lab to a super secret basement location where it will be easier to keep their newest discoveries under wraps. There is a very large desk workspace area and some cube storage. The Beaker's picked out all the latest technological gizmos to put in the space.

(cc: extracted wrench and screwdriver, career reward objects) (blue vials are renuyu port-a-chugs)

Second Floor

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/2166/overviewfloor2bf6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Nervous has a whole living suite upstairs. There is also a small gaming area outside his room with a pool table and poker table (recolored).

http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/6415/nervous1qq3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/5103/nervous2dc6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I went with a graphic and bold color scheme in Nervous' room. There are plenty of ways for Nervous to entertain himself in the room. I also added a mini fridge and microwave for those extended stays in his room he has become accustomed to. There is also a connected bathroom.

(cc: almost all the furniture is recolored, counter recolors, maxis match table wind chime)

extra of Nervous' room: http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/2181/nervous3ou0.jpg

(cc: maxis tub made backless)

http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/5107/exteriorbackus7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The backyard is a great spot for entertaining. For Loki, there is a grilling area with plenty of counters and an outdoor sink. There is outdoor dining overlooking a rock garden. The pool sits right by the greenhouse and is surrounded by planters. On the other side of the yard is a rock spa and hammock for relaxing.

(cc: maxis match bench, chair recolors, counter recolors)

Task 2

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/2523/laureldecoratingrk9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Arranging a chair in the living room in the perfect position.

What is your favorite decorating style? Definitely eclectic, because it's just plain fun. There aren't really any rules and I can just go crazy with all sorts of different ideas.

wow, finally done! I almost thought I wouldn't be able to get this in because I couldn't get an internet connection all last night. I got up early this morning and it was back so here I am.

Difficult round, I worked a longggg time on this, I rebuilt and redecorated everything at least three times, I'm so indecisive about these things!
The other entries look great! :)

{edited to add some more linked pics and answer the question}

14th Jun 2008, 12:39 PM
omg you stayed up all night! It has been many years since i did that!
And you said I was screwed! I think not! lol Love your living room and master bedroom Michie. How do you put browns and beiges together to look good???

Right, now a few questions. I have the tall version of the maxis fern but where is the medium one? And the floors on the landing? I know i'll be in trouble for asking this eek sorry.

14th Jun 2008, 12:55 PM
I'm sorry Duderock, but I have to drop out.

My game just doesn't allow my to enter their lot (And I have been freaking buzzy with that house for days)

I do have a Neighborhood picture so you can see a little what I did with the house form the outside. But I wont be able to make my entry.

14th Jun 2008, 1:17 PM
Sorry that you have to drop out, kipsnif. Good luck in your next contest.

14th Jun 2008, 2:14 PM
That sucks kipsnif. I can imagine how frustrating that must be. I had a similar problem and had to delete the neighbourhood. come to think of it, i recently had to delete deseterada valley as it kept crashing.

Magnoliae, you must have posted that at the same time i posted my last message. Loving your greenhouse btw :)

Edit: Er... how many pics were meant to be used in task 2? I thought i read that there were meant to be 2. Am i incorrect and if so may i remove one? I went to the 1st page and there's a link to the round 1 desription but not for round 2 so i couldn't find if it said how many pics.

14th Jun 2008, 2:57 PM
It could be 1 or 2...

14th Jun 2008, 3:47 PM

Unfortunately, brandon1107 and ineedalife didn't submit their entries, and will leave this round. Judges are PMed.

15th Jun 2008, 1:12 AM
There's only 7 of us left. Will there be any eliminations?

15th Jun 2008, 1:57 AM
No eliminations for this round. However, if we don't have any dropouts, There will be 2 eliminated after Round 3.

Still waiting for 2 more scores. I'll post Round 3 later.

Wow! Very nice! Three things: gridlines in aerial-tsk!tsk! I would have liked to see the "mystery" room furnished, even if not as a nursery. I felt the living area felt a bit squished, it all could have been moved a tile closer to the dining area.

Round 3: From Haunted to Homey, part 2

House: The Specter House

-pic coming soon-

A nice area for the graves.
A good amount of landscaping and decorative items.
Decorating style: Your answer to Task Two.

That's right. You will apply your favorite decorating style to this house

ROUND ENDS ON June 19 @ 10:00 PM.

15th Jun 2008, 8:44 AM
Omg... Wow thank you judges!

On my comments... the pictures aren't too long if they went through. It wouldn't let me post if they were.

15th Jun 2008, 8:48 AM
oh geez...i don't even know how to do styles....and i thought the last house was hard lol

Can we resituate the graveyard?

15th Jun 2008, 2:06 PM
You may move the graveyard anywhere. Even inside if you want to. :D

15th Jun 2008, 2:27 PM
You know I think it is kinda funny that the judges wrote the house was overly large and lacking in life. As soon as I enter my pictures, I tore it down and made a smaller more cozy version.

15th Jun 2008, 2:30 PM
oh thank you so much. That graveyard is a bit of an eyesore if you ask me and takes up half the lot lol. Imagine waking up to that every morning, or worse, that's the last thing you see every night before going to bed. I'd have nightmares!! Can't sleep, ZOMBIES will eat me!
Next question. Contemporary is modern right? I'm having a little trouble filling the house with limited 'contemporary' objects so do we have to follow our style choice strictly?

15th Jun 2008, 2:39 PM
You may divert a little bit, or mix 2 styles together (example: modern with some elements of country-style). However, the predominant style must be what you answered in Task 2 of round 2. (ex. modern/contemporary)

In your case, starwyn, it would probably be similar to your Round 2...

15th Jun 2008, 2:48 PM
The graveyard has patches of green 'grass'. Are we allowed to keep that bit only (I mean just the patches of green, no bushy plants or shrubs) or do we have to stick to the landscape for a desert?

15th Jun 2008, 2:51 PM
Sorry, Michie. Gotta erase the grass...

15th Jun 2008, 2:52 PM
Thank you. Thats fine. Just wanted to know so I am not breaking any rules!

15th Jun 2008, 2:53 PM
Oh, oops I did put the wrong aerial shot in. The other one had the room flooring fixed and my fixed landscaping =\. Oh well. I wasn't feeling this round anyway. That and I didn't realize I had gridlines until after I had exited the game but it was 4 in the morning and I thought the round was closing in the morning, because I got confused with the times for the contest. I wouldn't have had time to change it that day anyway, oh well. Thats my fault though.

15th Jun 2008, 4:59 PM
Ack, I guess the judges could tell I didn't put in my very best effort on the Beaker house. :/ I'll be sure to work much harder on Rd 3.

15th Jun 2008, 5:27 PM
ooo, a perfect score from one judge! thanks! and the other comments made me laugh, they both want to like it but don't know why they can't, it's okay :)

can't wait to start on the specter house, I knew we would be doing something with those styles we chose! Will we be judged on how well the style matches the style we chose, because I know some people don't like eclectic styles...
