View Full Version : people who dislike reading

I've been thinking lately about what a puzzle it is to me when people don't like reading! I am, and always have been, a voracious reader. It is one of the most important things in my life - I can't imagine a happy life that didn't include curling up with a good book for hours on end. It has without a doubt enriched my life in so many ways, I can't even begin to describe!

Yet my boyfriend is NOT a reader. Although I do understand the reason why he (and many others) may dislike reading (insecure about their reading skill/speed, not being introduced to reading for pleasure at a young age etc..) I still... just don't GET it!

Part of it is perhaps that I just feel... bad for people who don't enjoy reading. For all that they are missing out on... I have tried SO hard to get my boyfriend into books. Tried to get him to read, tried reading TO him aloud, downloaded audiobooks... but so far, nothing sticks. I just really want him to enjoy it like I do, and get the enjoyment and the knowledge that I get out of books.

Anyone else's thoughts on this?

What kind of books are you trying to get him to read? Does he like those subjects?

I love reading too( although lately have not done it much, because I have no good book to read) I am a reader I crack a thick book in a week. Main reason nowadays no one reads it's because...it ain't cool, brotha. And it is sad D:

As Black_Barook said, what kind of stories have you tried to read to your boyfriend? Remember, everyone's tastes differ. For example, I like reading historical novels, mystery and horror stories, sci-fi, non-fiction books, biographies, even some poetry, but no matter how loud anyone would try to read me a romance story, I still would be like: "Blah, whatever." Besides, if you try really hard, it can become annoying, I know one girl who tried to get me into sports so hard that I couldn't stand her anymore :wtf:

Yet my boyfriend is NOT a reader.

Mine isn't either. =/ *tries to comfort* He has read a couple of(2-4) books(ever) and doesn't like reading, although he doesn't find it completely horrid either. From what I've understood, he doesn't have the energy(or the time) to read. Also he says he dislikes the way books are written, and would want them written like spoken language -which I can not understand! x)

If a books subject is really, really interesting a person will probably read it even though they wouldn't care about reading. My bf's said that he'll at least try to read a couple of Stephen King's books during the remaining summer.

The thing is: I love reading now, but I haven't read _that_ many books. I always have to read every paper(especially news) I get my hands on, but during all my life I haven't read as my novels as I would have liked. And I've been very selective about what I read: if the book isn't written in an interesting manner, it might not appeal to me. Perhaps some other people have the same reason for not really being readers?..but it's still hard to understand since there are so many books in this world... you're bound to find something that pleases everyone.
