View Full Version : I'm trying to replace a mesh, but I'm having difficulties.

I'm trying to replace the Instant Meal drink with something else, like a wine glass or baby bottle or just a glass.

I managed to do it, but only partially. I opened one of these up and extracted the GDC file. Then I replaced the Instant Milk drink with it. It did not replace the texture, though, and when I look in game all I have is something invisible. I tried exporting and replacing the texture(same as the mesh, but with the texture) but that did not work either.

So I'm clearly missing a step here, but I'm having trouble finding what exactly it is I'm missing. Any help? :D

I'd also like to know if the method to do this properly also works with other objects, because I'm trying to make an object using the diaper as a base, but it's having all sorts of problems. So I'd like to use a vase as a base, but give it the model and texture of the diaper.

For being a site all about modding the forums sure are inactive. =/

Edit: I've tried exporting BOTH meshes, going to the mesh for the object I want to change, importing the new one, and saving it. But when I import it says it has too many faces or vertices, and won't let me import it. I can't find any information about this, either! I'm completely lost, and this is very important for the kind of stuff I intend on doing...=/

This is really getting frustrating. Most of the projects I intend on attempting rely on this, and if I can't figure it out, I'm screwed. ;________;

I had this warning about too many faces once, I think it was because I hadn't triangulated or forgot to export the mesh as single group in uvmapper.
Have you done both?
Have you checked the advanced mode in simPE settings?
Do you only have problems with this package or have you had problems with other objects, too?

Normally you get answers after a couple of days, also from advanced creators and modders.

Honestly I have no idea what you mean by "triangulated". And I'm not even using uvmapper. >___>

I have not checked the advanced mode, and I have this problem with other objects, too. I've tried it with the instant meal, with a bed, with a vase. Replacing them each time with the GMDC and texture files for another object.

All I know is that I take and extract the GMDC and then I replace it. Or, when I extract the actual meshes to edit them, I import them by choosing "3 bones per vertex"(only because this is what the tutorial I first used for changing a mesh said to do). Then I get the error. (This is constant no matter how many bones I pick, so it isn't that.)

That's all I really do. =/

I'm glad I clicked this topic because the "all posts by <me>" thing still said it had 0 posts...I could've gone days without seeing it if I hadn't clicked to make sure.

Alright, now I've tried just editing a mesh to make it the right shape, and that...gave me an index error.

This is really pissing me off.

Claeric, perhaps you could post one of the files which isn't working for you? It's quite hard to diagnose problems without seeing them ourselves. ;)

In the file are "Cat" (A package with the cat sculpture) and the mesh(.obj) which is stretched in some way or another just to test.

There's also a mesh I made from scratch(newbook) which I made FOLLOWING A TUTORIAL that does the same thing.

Where the hell are all the meshers? I know there's a billion people on this site who do this stuff by heart.

Well, I followed the tutorials again and am still getting the same errors. The index errors and the vertices errors. I'm beginning to think the problem is with SimPE itself, or something. I just don't get it.

I'm doing basic things and following tutorials! There is absolutely no reason I should be getting errors.

JUst to be sure it isn't this, you should try it with the advanced mode checked in simPE.
I have mine checked and I know that you can't for example import meshes over a certain poly count whithout the option checked.

Which 3D program do you use for meshing?

Claeric, what tool are you using to export your obj meshes? The files look like they're structured strangely, that's why SimPE is unable to load them. I opened them up with Wings, exported them as 3ds, then loaded the resulting files into SimPE, and now they seem to be working fine. :)

I'm using blender, always used blender.

And I had not done it with "Advanced" turned on. So I'll try that, too.

Also holy damn, actual help that looks like it might mean progress <3 If I can manage to replace meshes with others and do wahtever I want with meshes anda l that crap, I will be so happy.

Okay! when you export a mesh with Blender you need to use these parameters:

Then click 'export' and tell me if it works.

Oh my goodness! It worked!

However, it didn't REPLCAE the mesh, but added a new one. So unless I turned the original off they were sticking through each other. 0_o

but I turned the original off and saved it and am going in-game to see if it shows up. :DDDDDD

Then if that works, I'll try what was initially my problem- exporting a mesh(like a chair) and importing it as another object(like a sculpture) and see fi that works. :3333

Hmmm, since it didnt REPLACE the mesh and simply added a new one, it doesnt work in game. =/ The object is the same mesh as it was originally...

EDIT: I figured it out. It wanted me to select which mesh to replace. :o

So this DID work! <3 I am so happy thank you SO MUCH.

Now I am going to test replacing the instant meal mesh with something else. :D ...And of course I can't figure out how I found the instant meal GMDC file. :p

One last thing, in case anyone knows- how the heck do I get to this stuf? I'm lost. I don't know what I did to find it before. >_> I can't get an Instant Meal file with a GMDC and exportable mesh, same for the used diaper file. But I had both before...

But I did figure out how to replace meshes now, so hoooooooray! Now that I've got that down, does anybody know if I can copy over textures and UV maps? To test mesh copying I replaced a toilet with a plant. :p But now the textures are all wrong!
