So what happens if the same region is black in every channell?

Will it result in black? Or will it just crash? Basically I'm wondering if I can get a "free black" that will always be present in a pattern no matter what you change the other channels too.

Also,while I'm pretty sure the answer is "yes" I can use 50% gray in, the blue channel, while having white in the green channel directly underneath to create an even 50-50 blend in that area of whatever two colors end up being in the blue and green channels, correct?

Black in every channel results in showing the background colour fill. :)

You can use this background colour fill to get that free colour.

Yes, you can use greyscale to blend the layers together. :)
