I play the drums.

I've been playing

Snare Drum - 6 years
Drum Set - 4 1/2 years.

I love it.

Great Hobby.

So few drummers out there these days, kids usually want to be the lead guitarist or something.
But in the end, the drummers and bass players have the most market and are the coolest. :D

I've played violin since I was six, but not very constantly, there's been periods when I didn't want to and my teacher was holding the bow and trying to motivate me.
I've now played violin for 11 years (I'm seventeen), and always with the same amazing Russian teacher. I play very enthusiastically these days, because I've realized that's what I can do, play songs with grand feeling and spirit. :)

Bass I started at 11, guitar at 13, I've played both kinda on/off, but this summer I got immersed in Metal and bought a new guitar that sparked me to play hours per day. I love it, it's the best feeling.

I play some piano too, it's very handy instrument.

...I was the ultimate band geek in high school. :)

Yep, me too.

I originally played the trumpet at school which changed to a cornet for the church band but when I got train-tracks (Oh yeah, I was that calibre of geek) my tutor switched me to trombone to stop me cutting my lips up. I also took piano lessons and played a little redorder.

The weird thing is I don't have a musical bone in my body. I think I just got talked into it when I was young but kept at it because my best friend was in all the same bands. I don't play anything now.

I started learning the clarinet when I was 8, I'm 20 now so that's 12 years on that.

And last year for my 19th birthday my dad bought me an electric guitar. He plays the guitar, he learnt when he was young, and I started playing his so he bought me my own. In a way I prefer it to my clarinet. The guitar comes more naturally to me because I don't need to worry so much about my breathing and hitting the right key when I'm nervous, plus I associate my clarinet with numerous music exams and some dreadful but compulsory performances on stage. The guitar is just for fun, for me and nobody else!

I used to take piano lessons. I still know the basics and play by myself from my Mum's old piano books.

I also take trombone lessons and am in the school's tiny little instrumental band, even though I'm not that good at it.

I did ukulele and recorder in primary school as well

I play piano. I'm entirely self taught, which makes me rather proud of myself :P .

I'd love to learn guitar though, the problem is I don't own one.

I have a master's degree in music performance. I can play just about anything, though I tend to fail at the brass family. And I never got the hang of a drum set. Too much coordination required, I think.

By profession, I'm a concert pianist, although I do more teaching than I do concert appearances these days. I'm slowly doing more concerts now that my kids are getting old enough to fend for themselves, though. Soon, I'll be able to leave them home alone. Yays! I also play cello in a string quartet. We play lots of regional weddings, art gallery/museum gigs, private parties, etc. I also play the lever harp, also known as the Celtic or folk harp, again mostly at weddings. And at Robbie Burns Night celebrations. I will harp for haggis. ;)

I remember you saying you were in a string quartet but I had no idea you were also a concert pianist, go iCad!

I have to say as a Scot I never really considered a harp as being particularly celtic or Rabbie Burns-esque but when I think about it I guess I don't really run in the sort of circles that would appreciate the delicate sounds of a string instrument over the bold and brash racket of bag pipes  Thanks for reminding me of how close it is to Burns night though, I'm gonna have to put extra effort into celebrating it since I completely forgot all about St Andrew's day. Honestly, I should be ashamed to call myself Scottish

iCad
4th Dec 2009, 05:36 AM
As I understand it, the lever harp was more the domain of the Welsh than the Scots, but the local group of people of Scottish heritage who do an annual Robbie Burns Night thing invited me to come and play during the poetry readings and such, and then I teamed up with a singer and we do some traditional songs. But I don't try to drown out the pipes. But since I am Welsh by heritage, there we are. :) Although I didn't start playing the thing until I was in my 30s. I attended a folk music camp one summer to teach fiddling on the cello, and went to some of the beginner harp classes on a lark. Got hooked. An obsession was born.

But yeah, piano is my main source of income, fer sure. According to my mum, I started banging on my family's (badly out of tune) piano when I was two. Started lessons when I was three, so I've been playing a long, long time...

And yes! January 25th is nigh! Prepare the haggis! (And invite me for dinner... ;) )

4th Dec 2009, 06:08 AM
Maybe I should've known that too since my husband's Welsh but I really am a rubbish Celt. He can take the blame for that one though since he should be the one to teach me about his heritage.

I just noticed an error in my earlier comment, I meant to say I didn't realise the harp was particularly Scottish not Celtic. I thought it was an Irish tradition. I've definitely seen them in Scotland at the Hebridean Festival on the Western Isles (Scotland) but the Heb Festival attracts folk musicians from all Celtic backgrounds including ones I didn't even know exsisted like from mainland Europe. Sounds like you would fit right in there actually ;) - I mean the Heb Festival, not mainland Europe! If you ever plan a trip to the UK you should definitely work the Heb festival into it and of course you can pop round for some haggis, neeps and tatties :)

Unfortunately I will be in England on Burns night but I might have to convince my hubby to take me to Albanach, the only Scottish restaurant I've ever heard of (which is conveniently just down the road from me, nomnomnom) :)

Trumpet, Piano, Baritone. I was in concert and marching and symphonic band throughout middle and high school. We marched in the Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade in '91. We won the best band in the northwest award (I played baritone for that one) in '92 with 'The Year of The Dragon' performance.

I'd like to play the cello someday.

My family is pretty music oriented. I played the flute for about 5 years, I only stopped because it was an instrument that belonged to the school and I couldn't stand the only teacher available for it. I used to play the piano a bit but I wasn't to good. My best instrument is really my voice. But I do have a little brother who puts me to shame at 8 years old. He plays the piano and the drums and has declared I just don't have the co-ordination for the drums about 3 years ago. Dad does any guitar you can get him, the organ and his piano playing ability is only a little bit better than mine and mine is not too good.

I've played piano since I was 10. My mum used to play when she was younger, and I decided to start, so I taught myself. 6 years later, I can play by ear, read sheets and play most music put in front of me.

I also play saxophone. I've played for about 3 years now, and due to a crap teacher, I'm only at grade one when I can actually play at around grade 4-5.

ATM I'm teaching myself violin (Quite hard IMO) and the clarinet (I don't own a clarinet yet though :()

The clarinet (I don't own a clarinet yet though :()I used to play the clarinet when I was at school. I didn't want to, I wanted to learn to play the piano but for some reason my dad decided that the clarinet was a better choice. I didn't own one either, I rented one from the music teacher/school.

I got given a keyboard when I was about 10, only a small one, and taught myself to play a few things. Now I'm a bit older I really want to learn so that will be on my birthday list this year (as much as I would love a piano, and we do have the room, keyboard would be easier to have in the house). I also played recorder.

My dad taught himself guitar. He plays by ear so he can pick up any tune and within a few minutes will have grasped it. He used to be in a band and I keep trying to persuade him to start it up again but I don't think he's convinced.

I play a bit of piano and bass guitar and I have a few other small instruments (tambourine, cowbell, recorder), but I'm not particularly wonderful at those. Though, I suppose you don't have to be good to play tambourine or cowbell. :P I am best at singing, though this took years of practice. I intuitively understood music as a child, but my vocal quality was never all that wonderful, so it took a lot of work on my technique to make my voice better.

I used to play the clarinet in 6th grade. I guess I was pretty good but I gave up short after because I thought it was boring

a few months ago I was trying to learn to play the guitar again but I can't get the hang of it. why does it have to be so complicated? one thing is idk wtf F sharp is. it's not in that notes chart I was looking at.
oh and btw I have no one to teach me.
so my guitar has just been sitting there collecting dust nowadays

I know how to play some songs with beginners books on keyboard...not much of an accomplishment but I haven't played it in a while because I do not know where my keyboard is. if I ever find it I will see if I can find some more books and start playing again.

Drakesecaravdis: F sharp is (for all intents and purposes) the same as G flat, if that helps. I think I read somewhere that there is a difference of microtones between the two, but musical notation treats them as equal.

Bassoon for almost four years. Time flies by. o_O

I played trumpet in high school and before but realized it wasn't for me. So I started bassoon in my senior year and fell in love with it. Actually I was pretty obsessed before that point, because as you can see I signed up here with this username over a year before I actually played the bassoon. I didn't actually switch in band until for my freshmen year of college... And as a music major.

I also tried clarinet shortly before I signed up here but it always really hurt my mouth for some reason. With that said, things really haven't gone anywhere with it.

I've learned piano for college, but I'm just still not any good at it. D: I was good enough to complete the required semesters, but that was it. lol

No where, requests stopped being allowed on this forum along time ago.

However, I know there's a deco of it somewhere. Although I can tell it took a lot of work to make, it still isn't anywhere near EA level, so it might not be good enough for you. I haven't ever downloaded it myself.

Recorder is a very strange name for such an instrument me thinks. It's called blokfluit in Dutch (and blockflöjt in Swedish - my native language). Makes much more sense!

Yes, it is when you think of the modern sense of the word and I think Blokflote is a better name too but the meaning of the word has changed somewhat since the name was coined. It is the correct name for English speakers.

I play piano and classical/electric guitar. Started to play classical guitar when I was 11. Left it for a while when I was around 13 and concentrated on piano for a while before coming back to guitar. Fell in love with rock music at the age of 15 and got my first electric guitar at 18. Back in middle school, I used to play flute, too, but now I forgot almost everything D:
I still play piano and guitar, though, even if not constantly. I don't think I'm a genius as a musician, but I don't think I totally suck, either :bunny:

Another sax player here... I play tenor and alto.. have done for as long as I care to remember and am... ahem...pro. I also teach.

Took up recorder aged 6, violin at 8, flute and piano at 10, and finally sax at age 15 after I saw a British band UB40 in concert and decided the sax was a very cool instrument to play and I wanted to be a famous/idolised master saxophonist. I learnt to read music early on but the nature of the sax being an improvisational jazz instrument, had to "de-educate" myself and learn to play by ear.

Music is definitely my first love... apart from art and movies maybe! :)

I started on clarinet, then picked up saxophone, French horn, piano, trombone, baritone, guitar, marching percussion, and euphonium, in that order. I'm currently teaching myself violin.

My main instruments are my voice (since I could talk lol) and piano (20+ years); I also play recorder and harmonica and am self-taught (ish) in guitar.

Vocals mostly. But I want to learn mandolin soon. I don't really like mainstream instruments for some reason.

I play bass and guitar. Bass I've been playing 5 years, and guitar is around the same time. Bit less than bess. I also compose songs and write lyrics, so if we count in the songwriting, that's another one :)

I got a guitar for my birthday and have been playing it ever since, me and my cousins even have a band. I also sometimes play drums, I know one song to play on drums and about two on guitar. I sometime want to try playing piano to see if i'm any good.

I played the flute and a bit piano. And anytime I visit my friend I grab her guitar and punish the people around me, cuz it sounds terrible, when I'm trying to play it... ;/

I play the piano and flute. My kids play instruments too so it's often very noisy in our house, especially since my oldest daughter started the Trumpet and some fool gave my 4 year old some drums.
