View Full Version : Rumour: Next EP is about hobbies and occupations

Sorry this news are only in German:

It says that an online store has listed for June the next sims expansion pack. The shop confirmed after a phone call, that it will be about hobbies and occupations.
But keep in mind it's only a rumour until now because it's not confirmed from EA.

It appears that this rumor is something to be taken somewhat seriously though. And, I think it sounds like a good expansion pack, with a lot of possibilities to add new and interesting things for our Sims to do.
I was hoping, though, that the next one would really be a Nightlife/Hote Date kind of thing, as I find it extremely shallow in that department right now. There is absolutely nothing to do together with other Sims. The rabbit hole idea of restaurants really doesn't cut it for me. I've always really enjoyed going out to eat in a downtown lot - but I hated the loading between lots in The Sims 2, so I didn't "get out" as much as I would have liked. Now that we have a seamless neighborhood, I find it quite puzzling that they removed all the store and restaurant things. It seems now is when those lots would be really useful.
I would actually have preferred it if clothes stores were still around. It really wouldn't have been any more difficult to swing by one of them stores after work than going to the magic dresser which obviously store every item of clothing in the entire world :)
Anyway - hobbies and occupations sounds good to me. Will certainly give us something else to do, apart from collecting stuff all the time (whether it's fishing, gardening, bugs or rocks - it all feels like collecting to me).

I agree, Lee. It's like after it's too dark to meet people in the park, your social life is over for the day. Definitely the little town falls asleep by midnight.
I tried making a club like venue with a bar and stereo and foosball table etc, but hardly anyone turned up and when they did they just sat down with their homework or a book.

Hobbies hey? guess that's where the piano went....
Wonder if I can be a Poolshark for occupation?

31st Jan 2010, 12:40 PM
Sound believable but I too was hoping for something like a combination of Nightlife and Apartment Life, mostly just more sociability but also apartments.
Though maybe hobbies and occupations might include going out too? Hobbies and social life, maybe a sort of 'work and play' thing. It would introduce new careers but also new things for Sims to do after work - this would be the hobbies but also going out dancing or to a restaurant or whatever.

I did the same. Nice looking place and all, but the game decided it was an Art Gallery (this was before we could change that ourselves), and so the very few people that did go there would just stand around eye-balling the couches and potted plants, going "oooh". I felt like screaming at them - "Hey! There's a bar here! A fussball table - even bbq opportunities, and rockin' music! Let's have some frikkin' fun!".
But, oh no - that was not to be. Needless to say - I stopped going there myself.

Heh, in sims 1 when you had a party there was always at least one couple jiving, and yelling "raggle-raggle!" And in Sims2, anything over a certain number and a smustle line started. These sims3mies are so *serious*!
I have heard that defining the lot a nectary and having nectar to taste gives a slightly better impression of a wine bar at least.

If they do this, they had better give more depth to social interaction. Now that I've looked around, this is one of only a few things keeping me from buying the game, the others being:
I just recently got several new TS2 eps, and I want to play them for a few months more before I risk liking TS3 and abandoning them. Don't want to waste money.
My computer has (shudders) onboard graphics.
I'm waiting for more EPs to come out, namely one with more social depth.
Once the last criteria is met, I'd need to wait for Pescado to update AwesomeMod to fix all the stupid stuff in said future EPs.

Hopefully this includes pianos and pool tables. My virtuoso sims talents are seriously going to waste.

If they do release a hobbie EP, then I think they should add ballet and violin playing again. Those were my favorite things from FT, and they way sims dance right now, just isnt as graceful as I want it to be. They defiantly need more instruments added, and piano and violin seem like really good ones, because the only things Virtuosos can really do is play guitar, and not everyone can play guitar. They really need to expand on the things they do.

I agree, Lee. It's like after it's too dark to meet people in the park, your social life is over for the day. Definitely the little town falls asleep by midnight.
I tried making a club like venue with a bar and stereo and foosball table etc, but hardly anyone turned up and when they did they just sat down with their homework or a book.I did that but also added gym equipment and a buffet table. As long as I manually open up the buffet using my active sim I can get people eating and socializing while seated. My townies would spontaneously dance at the stereo. My set-up got automatically classified as a gym and I wonder if that helped. I noticed the original Sunset Valley gym seemed to be the closest thing to a social club I'd yet seen in Sims3.
Oh and my venue also had a small library setup going on upstairs. When in doubt, throw it all in there and see what sticks! Really my place (converted from All the Rave Warehouse in Riverview) was jumping and loaded with townies. I'd even get a few stragglers staying past the usual witching hour of 9pm when sims normally run for home as if the undead would come up out of their graves and stalk the streets if you didn't make curfew.
Okay getting back on topic...oops sorry for straying, this is exciting news and I hope it is true. We do need MOAR objects besides foosball and painting and playing guitar. I'm really hoping for more types of musical instruments because I have some characters who are based off my daughter's favorite tv band but currently don't have anything to do that reflects their characters' places in the band. How many bands have ONLY guitar players and nothing else after all.

Least wanted? Pets is the one I want the most. :D The whole game seems empty without animals. It seems to me from reading the forums that a lot of people would also be happy with this. But it would be too much to ask to expect everyone to like it, it would be boring here otherwise.
Either way, they'll probably add other stuff to it as well, building objects, furniture, etc. Even with WA I use the extras much more than the new vacation worlds.

I wasn't refering to Pets, I was talking about this "hobbies" EP. Having more things to do is okay, but having more interactions and things to do with other sims, including pets, is more desireable IMO.
NekoCat
31st Jan 2010, 08:51 PM
Definately need more interactions, that's for sure. And now that you mention it, there weren't a lot of interactions the sims had with pets in Sims2. And Sims3 seems even stingier with interactions. Sometimes I feel like my sims are paying more attention to the lamps they keep admiring than their families, lol. It gets boring after a while. But then again, maybe it's a very intersting lamp... :wtf:

EA's been mixing and matching with 3 so far. I'm not expecting a clone of any EP from 2. I've only had the base game for a week and WA for 30 hours, but a something from every EP is already in there. Freetime is my favorite EP for 2, I just hope they do a better job with making this one a social upgrade. I fully agree with everyone bemoaning the lack of social opportunities in what we've been given, so far. There's a lot of scope for that in a "hobbies and occupations" theme.

Seasons would be very nice with the new seamless neighborhood, but I think EA is probably still trying to find a healthy balance between game performance and quality with Sims 3. I wonder how EA will tackle that issue with Seasons....
I was REALLY hoping for a Nightlife or Apartment Life EP, but I like Freetime.....

Hobbies and occupations? If this turns out to really be the next expansion then I'm surprised because EA always seems to want to keep expansions restricted to one theme (Apartment Life being an exception). Hobbies and occupations are pretty much opposite of each other. I'm not complaining though, if we get something like OFB and FT in one expansion then that leaves more room for brand new ideas to be done in the future.
I think the marketing technique that EA is using with the EPs is that they will wait until about halfway through TS3's life cycle to bring back weather and pets. Since a lot of us want at least one of those two things, EA will bring those back just when we all are really bored of the game and then they'll have us hooked again. In the meantime they will put out "lesser wanted" expansions knowing that TS3 is pretty empty and we want more. Personally, everything after Seasons for me was just bonus with TS2. I hope I'm wrong about this though, I'd rather have pets sooner than later.
cmomoney

And if part of the theme is occupations, are jobs still going to be rabbit holes? If so, pointless.

If they do do hobbies, they need a wider variety of instruments. Like enough for teens to be in a school band. They could also allow teen sims to be on school sports teams, and add so many new branches to the athletic career track.

And if part of the theme is occupations, are jobs still going to be rabbit holes? If so, pointless.
I hope not, unless the new jobs were added to existing rabbit holes. It wouldn't be user friendly for EA to have us make more room for new buildings just to see if we like the new jobs. If they are in rabbit holes though, then sadly I can see how they could fit both hobbies and occupations into one EP. What I definitely wouldn't mind would be alternate rabbit holes for the existing careers to make themed neighborhoods easier.

Captain THPS4: "Personally, everything after Seasons for me was just bonus with TS2. I hope I'm wrong about this though, I'd rather have pets sooner than later."
Personally, I don't want pets at all, unless they're better than the Pets(tm) was. No EP can be cloned because they included features from all of them in the base, not always the most wanted features, but good ones. EA has to use a different packaging structure now to put out the same features and, perhaps, new ones. I'm hoping for more instruments plus a better band system than we had with TS2, one with everything included: singers, fiddles, piano and, drums as well as guitar and bass. That might happen with this pac, if the rumor is true. Or not. I'm dead certain a lot of folks want the supernaturals back, and they'll get them someday; perhaps all in one pac, or perhaps one at a time. We'll get pets and I just hope they're not packaged with "must have" features I can't pass up unless they improve them. A whole lot. We just have to wait and see.

Captain THPS4
1st Feb 2010, 02:09 AM
You're right, it definitely would be dull if pets were almost the only thing included in an expansion again. To me TS2 Pets felt like a "step" pack, something in between a stuff pack and an expansion pack (University, Mansion & Garden Stuff, and High-End Loft Stuff also fall under this category for me). Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if pets were included in this hobbies and occupations EP if it turns out to be true. Either way, if pets are brought back and not botched in any way I'll be a happy camper. The game feels a bit empty to me without them.

IMO I hope they do more with dates. I was not a fan of pets in either TS1 or 2 and almost never had any because my sims did not have enough time in the day to take care of the pets. I would love to be able to take sims out more and do things with them. I also wish we could go into the restaurants and see in them, and have more fun activities for our sims to do together. I feel like so far, TS3 is just work and go home. On a good note though, I think it's a good start.

I agree Inge, I love knowing what's next with The Sims. Once EA finally made the World Adventures announcement I was losing my patience, and it looks like it might happen again if EP2 isn't announced sometime soon. I'm surprised that High-End Loft Stuff doesn't reveal anything...they must be keeping something really good under wraps. I'm guessing it won't be shown until March if it's coming out in June.

You know, regardless of whether they get their own EP, Pets need to be fully controllable without cheats or hacks. And they need to sleep through the night like everyone else. Incidentally, if they combined Hobbies and Pets, that's the only feasible way I could see them doing horses and horseback riding. Aside from ponies that the extremely rich could get their extremely spoiled daughters, and that all the non-extremely rich little girls could agonize over having, and then get for themselves when they grow up and make it big, only to find out that a pony is not something feasible to own unless you are the extremely spoiled daughter of an extremely rich sim, and therefore do not have to work to make money.
Sorry, sort of went off on a tangent there.

And [pets] need to sleep through the night like everyone else..
Real life pets don't all sleep through the night. They may sleep through most of it, but mine usually get up at some point to go snack or at least change where they're sleeping.
Of course, they spend a good bit of the entire day napping, which would be boring in a game. At least when they're up at night it would give me something to do/watch while the others are sleeping.

I really hope it's an OFB like expansion with good INVENTORY management as I've been collecting tons and tons of crud and it would be GREAT if I could mass manage, sell, and play "the convince shoppers game" again. Crafting and running a business is what I miss MOST from the game and that's what I am hedging my bets on.
I could care less about night life, social interaction (sorry guys, just the truth) and pets, as those expansions are not what I need. Also if they were like they were they would not be complex enough and may be let downs.
If they wanted to have another Hot Date like expansion, they should combine it with other things that require socialization, like climbing up the social and business ladder, career politics, socialization drama, and also more places to go to downtown. I agree that there SHOULD be an expansion pack that covers all these while including complex social interaction. In addition, I like animals and would also like to run a farm and have pets, but not now.
Now I'd kill for something I *NEED* not want, and in the sims 3 that would be to manage my inventory better. Especially after going on all these vacations and everything is a mess.

Well, I'd be glad if they did launch the next EP as the hobbies and occupations. I'd love to make my own shops again, and I agree with everyone else that a piano is certainly needed.
I just hope that it's not like WA where you have to complete tasks in order to progress to the next level. For example, you own an electronics store, you click on some magic, sparkly thing, and are given the opportunity to build a stereo, and oh, by the way, you have to build FIVE, before you can advance to the next career level. And of course you have to send your sim all over town and into the boonies to find the necessary parts... FIVE times! I uninstalled WA because I didn't enjoy the "adventure" part of it, which I know is the whole premise, but if I want sims to go to exotic destinations, I'd like them to actually enjoy being there.

Heck yeah, it would be worth getting the nasty beasts back in the game to watch that!
Dogs are so crazy. Mine keeps dragging me through these horrid thornbushes that have suddenly taken over the woods behind my house. For some reason she thinks a spot isn't worth pooping on unless we've slogged through 9 feet worth of wicked looking thorns that must have germinated from alien seeds from a meteor and she's gotten to sniff every stinking track left by every animal heavy enough to sink down past 8 inches of snow to leave a scent. I'll be so glad when we get the yard fenced in and I can just open the door and let her run out and do her business. I've talked to a lot of dog owners who have the same problem with particular poopers. Pooping must be a high art form to a dog. I think Sims3 dogs should have an elaborate poop ritual that takes a full Sim hour to complete. If it takes the equivalent of 20 minutes for a Sim just to get positioned to read a book in bed, it ought to take a Sim dog at least an hour to find just the right spot to poop on.

LOL to your whole post Summersong!
Mine will only crap in one specific part of the yard even though he has a lot of room to roam (which is actually a good thing) but he is a nightmare to take to the park. He somehow manages to get himself into position to poop on the side of a tree. Then, I stand there while gravity takes its course, waiting patiently with my little blue baggie.
I don't mind a Pets EP as long as it is a great improvement over the last one. I'd like to see some farm animals involved too. I'd love for my Simmies to keep chickens for eggs and goats for milk and cheese etc.

Excellent post, and that's why I didn't buy WA in the first place.
I'll probably buy the stuff pack, depending on what I hear about what's in it, and will most likely buy a Hobbies and Occupations Expansion Pack although it isn't my first choice; but if it's "do this to unlock this, etc." then forget it.
It doesn't sound like that's what they're doing. WA was the questing one. I don't like that theme, but if you do then I'm glad you have an EP you like. I don't think EA plans to make all their EP's like that. If it's "Hobbies and Occupations" I'd expect more things for sims to do (not sure what, but surfing in oceans comes to mind as one possibility) with things like pools enhanced (maybe "Ask To Join" in a pool finally), hopefully and probably more careers, and maybe some OFB-style stuff.
Unlike someone else who posted, I think what they most need is more social options. The thing I don't like about the possibility that next is H&O is that it doesn't sound like it will open up group outings, dating, etc.. The game really needs a real restaurant and bar experience. :Pint: If they weren't going to put it in an early EP, they should have put it in the base game. There's no such thing as a date in TS3 right now.

Hobbies and occupations perks my interest, and I really want to know for sure and more now. I'd hope that hobbies would mean more socials right there and then.
However, I *fear* more rabbitholes if EA keeps doing that as is. I devoutly hope that if there are new rabbitholes involved, what also will be involved is EA giving us THEIR versions of customizable ones- special doors or invisible floor tiles that turn ANY shell-building into a rabbit hole of our choice.
I mean, seriously, I know rabbitholes are giving modders and meshers headaches, EA should be able to do something so we can customize our towns much easier since they have all the source tools and code right at hand :p
If EA just provides more pre-made building-looking ones that use architecture, colors, and textures we can't use ourselves even... I will scream.

I'm with you bakafox about EA teasing us with Rabbit Hole architecture we can't use. When I saw the previews I thought, wow, look at those stores and community lots! Now i'm like yeah whatever. I don't need to see what my sims do at their "current" rabbit hole jobs or school but only having the park and beach to meet for dates is boring. they can't even see a movie together, one sim goes in and if your lucky your date goes too! I would like to see some athletic fields, real ones not just the rabbit hole stadium. Maybe a boat launch pier, some volleyball, basketball baseball?

4th Feb 2010, 05:50 AM
Yeah I was pretty "WOW" thinking that surely if those community lots had such nice moldings and stucco and detailwork, that we'd be getting such toys too.
<- SO NAIVE SOMETIMES
..I still wish I could tell my elbow from my ear with modding/meshing and cloning. I suspect something like a TS2 elevator would make a very handy rabbithole. With WA they actually solved one step of the "Hideous Shell" problem- the tomb-room-designator spheres are teriffic for hiding the empty 'walls down' look for shells/wall-built columns.

Although my favorite was the pool table, I realized today I really miss the poker and mah jongg tables. In Sims2 I couldn't keep my sims away from poker, and mah jongg was such a great break from chess, especially since four sims could play at once. I sure hope they include those. And a slide for the swimming pool would be great too. :bunny:

Personally I miss University. Really feel like my sims are missing an entire stage of their lives, and that seems like a pretty big omission.
But I definitely agree with the consensus that the social aspect is lacking.

A pets or seasons is ideal for the next ep I think

Unlike someone else who posted, I think what they most need is more social options. The thing I don't like about the possibility that next is H&O is that it doesn't sound like it will open up group outings, dating, etc.. The game really needs a real restaurant and bar experience. :Pint: If they weren't going to put it in an early EP, they should have put it in the base game. There's no such thing as a date in TS3 right now.
Agreed.
While I liked FreeTime better than Nightlife for TS2, I did think that Nightlife was the more essential EP because of the social elements it introduced. The TS3 base game does offer a more detailed set of social interactions than pre-Nightlife TS2 did, but right now I find that the absence of the ability to send Sims out in groups to do things together is really noticeable.
Personally I miss University. Really feel like my sims are missing an entire stage of their lives, and that seems like a pretty big omission.
I really miss University too (though I sometimes think I'm one of only about 10 people who actually liked it). If they did do a Uni equivalent for TS3, though, I'm not sure I'd want them to use a separate world for the university campus. This was fine for WA, but at some point, a bunch of separate little worlds would start to defeat the whole point of having a seamless neighborhood.

Hmmm.... Hobbies in TS2 was a waste of an EP.
"Enthusiasm" was so pointless, and there wasn't a new dimension to gameplay.
I hope this one won't be as lame.

I liked the hobbies. They helped to give sims more personality and then there were a lot of new activities and interractions introduced in the game because of them. Even if you didn't really pursue the hobby part, you still had a lot of new things to do because of them. If I remember correctly, we got ballet, sewing machine, pottery wheel, car repairing, drawing table, the competitions.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed the University EP also, and if it were up to me it would be my second priority after Nightlife.
I also agree that if they do add University at some point, that the University should be part of the seamless neighborhood. That might require a new EA-made neighborhood as it wouldn't fit well in the existing ones.
The perfect thing would be to allow both sims from the (new) existing neighborhood, which would include a regular neighborhood as well, to attend the University and sims from the others to "go away to college" there. That may be too much to ask, but I can dream....

Personally, I'm kind of excited for more hobbies and occupations. I've been wanting other job tracks like teacher, magician, maid etc. I would like to make the npc jobs available to play, at least. Also, the fact that guitar is the only musical instrument bugs me. I miss the really awesome piano songs and how sims with a low creativity would always sing terribly!
On that note, I noticed that my sim with a maxed out guitar skill sings a lot better in the shower than my sim without any guitar talent. Coincidence?

I could imagine, Pets would work a lot better in TS3 than in TS2, with the seemless neighborhood and all. It'd be lulz if the dogs had automatic actions, like going nuts at the maids, or chasing the mail man. :3 And stray animals in alleys..... ;D
I think pets were okay in TS2, and I think that having the level of customization available for pets as there is for humans would be neat.
I have a savage/tarzanesque sim who's my favorite, but I miss being able to befriend the wolf packs and then become a werewolf! His little hut in the forest just isn't complete without various wolves running around.

I miss the hobbies. I also miss the PIANO. I would like magic back as well, and apartments would be nice too. But I can't have all my favorite things from ts2 all in one ep lol. I can always dream though.
The one thing I miss the most our my Vampires. I hope that they bring them back into the game in ts3.

True story. I forget exactly what her hobby was, but it was something very girly and deffinatly not gothic XD

Chasing butterflies is more a geeky than girly thing, in my opinion. Collecting bugs and all. I would welcome such "nonsensical" hobby as it would be like a quirky characteristic. Having such things rolled randomly on TS2 gave my sims much more personality, as I would try to make up a story for them that would include every random aspect the game gave me.
So yes, "Hobbies and Occupations" sounds great to me, like Freetime was. If they could only include seasons or business... ;)

I can see them waiting awhile to give us seasons. They waited long enough in the sims 2. I wouldn't mind a hobbies ep, as long as it doesn't have all the quests type of things like in WA. I like WA but it would kind of suck to have two ep in a row making quests. Just my opinion.

I'm quite excited about the new EP. My sims have maxed the base game skills and careers several times over so I'm very happy if the new EP involves more traits, careers, skills and LTWs as well as new objects. I am dreading pets - I mean, I'll give it a go, but I really sucked at the keeping pets thing in TS1!

There is absolutely nothing to do together with other Sims. The rabbit hole idea of restaurants really doesn't cut it for me. I've always really enjoyed going out to eat in a downtown lot .
Anyway - hobbies and occupations sounds good to me. Will certainly give us something else to do, apart from collecting stuff all the time (whether it's fishing, gardening, bugs or rocks - it all feels like collecting to me).
I confess to you that I bored my ass off the game. Without those great modders or great house builders/creators in TS3 community I would put myself to sleep for a long time ago with TS3. :(
For TS2 I thought the game hooked me up far better than TS3. So many amazing EPs came out one after another such as Hot Dates/University/Nightlife/OFB/Seasons etc. :giggler:
I guessed EA team failed a lot with SOCIAL INTERACTIONS. Nothing to do at night.
Even WA can't rescue the boredom. :wtf:
I dunno, I am just a huge fan of Nightlife/University/OFB(...shrugged... )..may be...that's why I need any new EP with fascinating young adult activities rather than just "adventures".
Ps. Without original Maxis team, you guys think EA will support the ideas of Apartment Life/University/Nightlife/Vampires....those kinds of thing???

8th Feb 2010, 09:16 PM
I don't see why not little bee. The original "maxis" team had very little to do with most of TS2.
If we get elevators, like in OFB, I will totally squeel. I am so tired of just plain old staircases. I'd like ladders and spiral stairs as well, and those firemen poles. For the lulz.

Did you maybe download it as a custom content item? Because I have WA, and have browsed through the HELS items and no piano.

Well, I still have my fingers crossed for Superstar as Hobbies and Professions is just a rumor. Still H & P would hopefully give us some more fun activities for our sims to do. If it is true I hope it includes the return of the cooking contests. Those were fun.
Little Bee is right when saying EA failed on Social Interactions. A lot of people feel that way and have said as much in the MTS threads.

I agree. There is a lack of things to do in the game. A part of me wants to reinstall my sims2+all ep's and wait for the sims3 to start being :bunny: more fun with the more eps they bring out.

I think that expansion pack is a good idea as it's the kind that is always useful, even when you just want to play normally with your families (and not go on holiday or open a business or whatever was possible earlier in sims 2) as it's the sort that brings lots of interactions and clothes, ect. The fact that it might be one of the first expansion pack is therefore, I think, quite interesting.

I love this concept. I love crafting and collecting and learning news skills, so this is perfect for me. That being said, I hope we can do without the "enthusiasm" nonsense and all the related phone calls and such . And I would be very pleased if it added some more activities for Sims to do together.
I'd definitely be pleased with the return of some sporting activities such as the basketball hoop, volleyball net, rollerskating ring and things like that. I miss the dart board too. I can't wait to see what new craftables will be included. I would love it if the Sims could sell their wares from a stand that could be put on the home lot, or taken to the park or other suitable venue. Something like an OFB home business, but without all the bugs and annoyances.

The dartboard would be a good 10th Anniversary freebie item.
