View Full Version : Changes to the site
Delphy
31st Mar 2010, 09:19 PM
Hi All,
In order to better accomodate our Challenge entrants, and to help everybody get into the feel, we have decided to change the site around a little bit.
From now and for the next 2 weeks, the entire website is here to help you get into the medieval mindset!
I suggest you dig out your Olde English dictionaries, and watch out for people peeing from the houses and dumping chamber pots on you.
Yours in kingship,
Delphinius The Great

Ah, but Gaul is a more general term applying to most of modern day F-R-A-N-C-E. Back in ye olden days, they distinguished between F-r-a-n-c-e proper, and Gascony, Normandy, Brittany, Acquitaine, etc.
And the system cannot get specific regions out of such a general term as F-R-A-N-C-E.

i learned english since nearly 10 years and even though i personally think i`m quite good at it, its still so hard for me to see through all this old english stuff...
please consider that there are so many people here who only have basic english knowledge.

I agree with you. Besides, there are a lot of non-native speakers on the site. And for some even modern English is a problem. As for me, I am a linguist and I studied the history of English, but still it is a pain to read posts in old English straining my mind to understand it all. I am sure it is a pain even for native speakers. So optional old English layout of the site would be best.

I think this is really funny and a super cute idea! My only concerns are with the Creator Feedback Forum there are quite a few people who speak English as a second language and I fear the critiquing process may get a little confusing for them. I mean, English is my first language and sometimes it gets a little confusing for me. But overall I think this is hilarious!

I thought it might have been for April fools day (actually I hoped).
But it could only be a joke if it happened on the first of April and it started on the 31st of March.
So no wonder everybody believed it. I prefer April fools day being on the first day of April not the last day of March.

Oh, I know all about timezones. But maybe the ones who made up the april fool joke should have thought about them as well!
And still. It started here (Belgium) on 31st of March at 9PM. That makes it afternoon of 31st of March in America (where I think the makers of this site live)
So that doesn't change anything about what I said. It started on the 31st of March anyway.
That was my point!
But anyway, I'm glad it's gone. It was the most annoying thing, really!

lientebollemeis: I most certainly don't live in the US and in fact it went live at 10pm CET, not 9pm. Besides, who says we have to follow convention? I can, and did, choose to put the stuff live before the 1st deliberately.
Nearly half the world was already in the 1st anyway. Or did you suddenly forget the people to the East? :)

lientebollemeis - Um, we did think about time zones - and you're wrong about the start. It was turned on at about 10:30 PM (with some fixes and tweaks for a couple hours after that) on the 31st here in the Netherlands, and turned off about 22 hours later. The site is hosted in the US and we have some US staff but I'd say the majority of staff here are in Europe.

It was pretty obvious it was an April's fool joke anyway, so pooh to the nay-sayers. :P I thoroughly enjoyed it. (I love to cackle ! :giggler: )

You can switch your theme at the bottom left of any page. When you do, it'll change your url to say something like styleid=31. Change that last number there to 37. I'm not sure what we need to do to make it an actual chooseable style but it is still available if you know the style code.

The thought that I wouldn't be able to enjoy coming to this site for 2 weeks sucked. While I do understand those with reading challenges trying to adapt to something new...it always amazes me how many people fight the slightest degree of change or who take everything so serious.
Personally, I love the humour behind it. I laughed when trying to decode my journal entries. :) Great stuff! Thanks for the fun guys.
If the option was to turn on "Medieval Mode" that would give those of us who love the language and colour scheme the fun of using it and everyone else can have their treasured "normal".
