help bone tool keeps crashing milkshape

stupid bone tool keeps crashing milkshape and right now it is the only way I know to make bone assignments I'm still not perfect at it I admit. But with out bone tool I don't know how to use the extended manual edit. and I still don't know all bones by heart so knowing what bone to assign to what is a real trick for me right now.I have beta 1.8.5 version of milkshape 3d. But the bone tool was crashing earlier versions as well.

here's a picture of the current dress I am working on. I'm still adjusting it as you can see. it's supose to be yuki's child hood coat dress from vk. I have no idea how to make the puffy part though. if any one could help me with this I'd really be greatful. if I can perfect it I plan to upload it some how.

I had the same problem and tried everything I could to fix for weeks, 1.8.4 and 1.8.5beta both were crashing when using the bone tool for me too.
At last I managed to fix it, and all I did was uninstall milkshape 3d, delete the whole milkshape3d folder in "program files" then re-install 1.8.5beta.
I didn't put ANY additional plugins or MESA drivers, and it seems to work with no problem now!

don't I need some of those additional plug ins? I thought bone tool was a plug in? sorry if I sound confused but I will try it. thank you.

That's exactly what I thought but somehow it worked for me ( I use windows XP).
