Hello, I'm the creator of the Blender 2.5 SMD Tools (http://code.google.com/p/blender-smd/). I was surprised to learn the other day that The Sims uses the format, and I'd like to make sure that my tools work properly with it.

In particular I'd like to get the tools automatically compiling Sims models whenever an export is made. I don't know how this happens right now, and some example command lines would be very welcome. Hit me with any other problems too. :)

I'm also unclear on exactly when SMD is used, as there seem to be several different formats floating around.

Thank you for the SMD tool. We really appreciate it.

I am not technically astute enough to understand the first half of the question. Hopefully someone else can help.

As to when it is used ... I use it when I want to make my object bump-map enabled. I only make objects -- not sims, hairs, clothes, etc.

Thanks. So how do you go from SMD to in-game model? Is it an official tool?

I dont think the smd format is used by the game, is it?
Used the half life smd importer(plugin) years ago with sims 2 meshes but used Simpe to convert them to the game format as it has a smd import/export option.

You do the following if you want to test it.
Clone a outfit with bodyshop and save it
Open Simpe and start new
Use the PJSE tools to create a meshpackage(browse to your just saved bodyshjop file) for it and save it as meshpackage
Open the outfit(bodyshop file) with Simpe and link it to your meshfile(also with PJSE tool)
You now have a working clone of the outfit

In the meshpackage you will find the gmdc, wich contains the mesh.
You can export that mesh using the smd exporter and load it in Blender to edit
