Can't get my collector's helper to work!

This is a big problem. If I keep it in a sim's inventory, the only option I get while clicking on it is "give away". If I place it somewhere, on the floor or whatever, I get a "no interactions available" when I hover over it. Is anyone else having this problem? It's really bugging me.

Try that first - every step, in order, and don't skip anything! Even if it doesn't say your specific problem, try it anyway, as it's a good starting point to rule out the most common causes of game issues.
