View Full Version : Changing Ingame text

I want to change the names and descriptions of the default EA careers (particularly the Law Enforcement career) but I notice the tutorial for doing this here: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=349481&c=1&ht=&page=1&pp=25#startcomment - is outdated, and there is no clue that I could see of a new way of doing this.
I went through it anyway in the hope that it would still work, it only does in part, my new career titles and descriptions show up but random other things disappeared, like the 'Jump on' text from the trampoline and the 'Join Investigator Career' on the Police station.
Can anyone give me an idea of how I should be changing the text now? Is there a new way of doing this? :help:

Are you editing the STBL for the expansion pack you currently have? If you're pulling the STBL for the base game then it wouldn't have the text you describe and thus wouldn't show up.

Thank you for your speedy response,
you are right I edited the STBL from DeltaBuild0 because the generations STBL in the FullBuild_p08 file doesn't contain the text I wanted to change, I assumed (obviously wrongly) that I needed to edit the base game data for a base game career.
Thank you for mentioning that, it seems obvious now I think about it, particularly with those objects/career having the problems, I will have another look in the FullBuild files
Edit: I have had a look through the STBL files in the FullBuild files for Generations, Late Night and Ambitions but I'm not seeing any references to the base game careers, only the careers that come with each expansion. :help:

I use this tool to edit game texts. It's pretty easy to use and it works for me, it also includes templates for editing the career names. So you might find it helpful.
As you're editing the text of a base game career, you only need to edit the STBL located in "DeltaBuild0.package." Don't mess around with other EP packages unless you're changing text from them.
I assume you're editing the whole extracted STBL. You must not do that. What you have to do is extract the parts that you want to change and create your own STBL. The tool I mentioned already has the extracted job titles for the careers, so you won't have to do that now.
Remember this when adding your STBL to s3pe:
You must choose a unique instance for your STBL when you package it, following these guidelines:
The first byte must be the appropriate localisation code for your game. There is a list here (http://www.sims2wiki.info/wiki.php?title=Sims3:Locales). 00 is English.
The next 3 bytes are random.
Finally the last 4 bytes must be less than 0BA8342F, the code for the default STBL, so that the game will prioritise them. (I hope you can read hex!) That means anything from 00000000 to 0BA8324E will be accepted by the game engine. Everything above will be rejected.

Thank you, for the link to the tool, I've spent most of the afternoon looking at various STBL related links and didn't come across that one
and thank you for your advice too, I think it may be the unique instance, as I definately didn't do that (though I was also editing the whole STBL as you say not to do). Is the instance to change the one in the Resource Details box?

Yes, that is the Instance that you need to change. ;)

Sims MX, thank you, I've got my Law Enforcement changes up and running in game using your method, and a little guess work on the new instance number (I don't read hex) but I used S3PEs FNV Hash tool to come up with a new instance number and ensured that the first two digits were the localisation code, it works so I'm assuming by luck my digits came out right!
I was completely stuck before your comments so I really do appreciate your help
