Why do you have to sign up to download things from this site?

Anyways, I don't see a reason in having to sign up to download things from this site, so... why is it?

Because if you really like something it is both polite and kind to let the creator know by thanking them, and the thanks appears to be set up as a kind of a post? (Especially if you wish to leave a comment)

Because if you have an issue with something you downloaded and already have an account you are more likely to post and tell the creator?

Bottom line: because it's Delphy's site and Delphy's rules...

For all the reasons Ghost said - plus the additional reason that when guests are allowed to download, then there are much less slots available to normal members (or creators, or staff...) to download.

The site has a limited amount of resources, so obviously we need to limit both the resource usage, and how people access those resources - I chose to do this by implementing a member only download policy. I've occasionally opened it up to guests, but only when bandwidth allows.

Of course, having a member account does enable you to thank, view your downloaded items (in case you want to see what you grabbed months ago), post in the discussion sections, and so on. It's a way of participating and giving back to the creators and people who contribute.

If you find yourself (not you personally, but in general) desperate to download just one or two things, and not expecting to ever come back here, you can use our official BugMeNot account. However, you can't post if you do so, so it's still rather limited. You can Thank, and I would strongly suggest that BugMeNot users do so, because it makes creators feel so warm and fuzzy. :)

Agreed, thanks comments and thanks make creators keep creating, because they see that there's people that actually like what you do. At least that's my case :) So having an account is lovely for that ^^
