Okay, so I seriously JUST made an account to share my knowledge on how to get your sims back after they've magically disappeared after their Free Vacation.

I figured this out by myself. :)

Okay, so you're sims are missing and their box on the left is shaded in grey. That means they're still on their vacation! In some cases, those "missing" sims are on your lot but they're not playable for some reason ; In MY case, I sent two sims on the free vacation but only ONE came back. So what do you do to get him/her/they back? You must evict them out of their home. I repeat, you must EVICT them. Don't move them out the house in-game, that will freeze the game.

STEP 1. Go to EDIT TOWN and select your active household.

STEP 2. EVICT them.

STEP 3. Move them to any other vacant household.

STEP 4. As soon as that's done, just move them back to their previous household. Everything should literally be back to normal and all your sims should've returned.

If that doesn't work, then message me. If you have World Adventures and they're on a World Adventures vacation or whatever, I'm guessing this applies too your case too if your Sims are missing.

Good luck :)

-Gabby.

One could also use a mod such as MasterController to recover them ("Reset Lot" will bring them home), if one were so inclined.

And I suspect this post would have fit better in the "Generations" discussion, since free vacations were added in that Expansion, but that is merely my personal opinion of course.

Cheers. :)
