[EDIT] I think I've fixed it but I'm leaving this here just in case someone else has the same problem.
Last night I tried reinstalling again, but this time could not even patch the base game (after downloading the update it failed to install due to an "Unknown Error" and I could not even open the game). I uninstalled, and reinstalled again, and this time it worked - I installed the base game, patched, and then the eps I have, patching after each one.
After this I still had to download and install the pets patch but it appears to have worked fine and I can get to my saves again!

I am sorry if this is answered somewhere. I've looked, but I'm confused and frustrated and if I saw it, I didn't understand it.
Probably not relevant, but mentioned just in case:
Earlier, I tried to install a few new pieces of CC- some decorative objects from The Sims Key, the Shop From Inventory mod, and the Bakery set from ATS3. My game froze on the installation screen and after basic troubleshooting was still not working, so I decided to reinstall.
What's going wrong now:
I reinstalled the Base Game, World Adventures, Ambitions, and Late Nite. When I open the launcher, I get a message telling me that I have a software update that asks me if I want to download it. I select yes. Immediately, another box pops up asking me if I want to patch my store content. I select yes. Then I get a box telling me that my store content has been patched. (There is at this point no store content installed.) Meanwhile, I get a download progress bar with "Sims 3 Late Nite" that takes fooooreeeeeever to download. I mean something that takes more than an hour at 200kb/sec. Then, once it's finished downloading ... everything disappears!
When I open the Sims game again, the same thing. Would I like to download the software update, would I like to patch my store content. Then the same download that takes forever.
I'm stuck in a loop!
I googled and found this page, which suggests that I need to install the expansion packs in a particular order, but, frustratingly, does not say IN WHAT ORDER:

(I did update the base game before installing the expansion packs, I think - but I'm not 100% sure. I'm going to try again and make sure I do in the meantime.)
All EA support leads to the new origin page. Do I have to install Origin? I just play the Sims. I don't want to install their bullcrap. :/
