View Full Version : You guys think EA's default hair is too flat?

I've noticed something when I downloaded custom hair (namely hairstyles from Peggy or Newsea). Most custom hair I found has unique shapes and seem to have more volume. Although the default hairs look more or less realistic, some of them don't look right, especially the men's hairstyles. Most of the men's hair looks outright flat, or just too messy. Anyone else think so?

I will agree that the mens hair styles are a little flat. EA could make some of the mens look more slick in a way. The girl hair syles are pretty good, they make me want to pick the same hair style all the time.

I think the models are fine. It's just the textures for the hair that needs improvement.

I'd like hair better if it could sit upon a Sim's shoulders, even when he/she moved around, without melting into the Sim or clothing. That looks dumb in screenshots. (I appreciate that it's not merely a texture problem so much as a physics-model problem and that it would be plenty hard to fix, but still, that's what I want.)
Peggy-style hair is too overdone for my taste. But that's just a taste, not a bug.

I'm not sure I'd say it's too flat... a lot of Peggy hairs especially have excessive volume. But there is something about a lot of the EA hairs, besides the textures, that bugs me. Some of them just look like they started to put together a hair, and it's pretty well structured and defined near the scalp, but they got bored as they neared the ends of the strands and just sort of gave up and wandered off. I get that they were trying to give the (realistic) effect of hair thinning out towards the ends--and maybe this is just a texture thing after all-- but the way they did just makes the hairs look unfinished, or at least unpolished. Instead of thinned out hair, it's a color gradient that fades from solid to transparent. CC hairs tend to have solidly defined clumps of hair all over, and little dangly strands are sharply defined from root to tip.

Most EA textures, especially the store textures, are really awful in my opinion. They look like plastic or glue.

Meh... sweat and oil. Hard days on the rigs, I suppose.

EA hair is 85% disappointing there are a few I use that are really nice but mostly the texture plus the occasional really bad shaping is why I use nearly all custom hair I honestly like some of Peggy's hairs but several have too much volume or other issues newseas hairs are 95% good I've only had shine issues once and there are a few with shape problems.

Honestly, I think EA hair (at least the base game hair) is the right level of volume. Peggy and the like's hair is just too big for me.

^ This.
Most custom hairs I see are way too "big". EA hairs are nice and realistic and not really flat at all. Now, as others have mentioned, sometimes the textures and the graphical quality just need a little work.

I think the exact opposite... I'm kind of surprised more people don't agree that EA hairs are way too "poofy". That was the first thing I noticed when I first started playing TS3.
At least, I think the female hairs are. I don't really care about the males since I use the same custom hair on almost every male I make.
Mostly just the longer hairs for females from pretty much all expansion packs. A few of the base game hairs are decent. But most of them... They seem too big, poofy and the textures look like plastic (like nonamena said). I hate using EA hairs.

I've noticed the newer hairs tend to be really fluffy and strange. I guess they're trying to cash in the trend of big hairs but just... doing it badly.

If the textures were better, most of the hairstyles would look great.

Is there a way to replace all the texture of EA Hair as Defaut Replacement like skin?

I think so, Aikea and Missbonbon have default replacements for almost all of the EA hairs.

Where is this?
Personally, though, I really like the EA hairs--though there are always styles I don't care for, I find the ultra-shiny custom hairs really irritating.

Club Crimsyn. Here are a few links to aikea_guinea's hairs, http://club-crimsyn.dreamwidth.org/41031.html (LN default replacements), or http://club-crimsyn.dreamwidth.org/30770.html There are more on that site.

EA Hairs like EA Clothing for the most part is .... ugly and unattractive. I use 3rd party CC hairs just because the textures are so much better. I like some of the EA hairs... like about 5 of them and I need to ask someone to retexture them. Thanks for the links for Aikea's hairs guys :) I don't use those styles a lot but they're better than EA's version.

I like the hair I picked for my legacy sim. It's nifty, and one from Showtime, it's a proper length and appropriately flat!

I like EA hairs. Most of the EA hair look like hairstyles I can see ordinary people wear everyday.
It's the overly pouffy custom men hairs that I see from other sites that irk me (I want to see some manly but stylish hairstyles, something that can say 'I am a well-groomed man' or 'I keep my hair tidy and neat,' and NOT 'I am Justin Beibersim, I am a Stonersim, I am a model, or I like other men.'
That and charcoal black roots in custom hairs that cannot be CASted out of the hair... how the heck are my sims supposed to look like natural blondes?

Huge set of store hair texture replacements here: http://littlecatsims.tumblr.com/post/19787592681/i-have-for-you-70-store-hairs-retextured-with
I recommend putting them in your Overrides folder.

I agree. I only use the Katy Perry hair and ambitions hair for females, and ambitions hair for males since every other style just looks weird and oddly textured.

Speaking of Newsea and Peggy they're third-party devolopers who want you to pay them for a better creations. But EA is more popular with their works because most of the customers trust them and trust their contents and the free hairstyles from peggy or newsea are just for adverstment..

Maybe it's a generational thing. I'm an old fart and I think most custom hair is too wispy and ridiculous looking on the sims. I only download EA match hair. I think many of the showtime hairstyles are way too big and poofy.
