I've been playing The Sims for years (Bustin' Out and TS2 for PS2, including The Urbz, TS2 on PC, and since today TS3 for PS3).
Out of curiosity while playing on my PC, I've looked up where in the timeline the console games fit. I've searched on a Sims Wikia, but they're very vague over there and from the looks of it not everybody who edits that site give a logic explanation.

So, can anyone help me out in between (or during) what main games do the following games take place:
- The Sims (PS2)
- The Sims Bustin' Out (PS2)
- The Urbz (PS2)
- The Sims 2 (PS2)
- The Sims 3 (PS3)

I just love trying to remain in continuity, especially when I'm planning on recreating some console exclusive characters for TS2 on PC.

Bustin out was released first, the Sims 2 pc then The Urbz. Is there a particular story timeline?

Bustin Out characters were cool. I loved the swinger guy with the rainbow afro and his cowboy girlfiend. You unlock the heart shaped windows there too I think or is that the polar bear love rug. Mimi is the girl you move in with first right after leaving Mom's place? She's totally laid back and plays guitar or goes swimming with her friends all day long.

The Urbz had fantastic clothes and neighbourhoods. Not so much character development.

I just occurred to me that the original game is missing from that list.

The original is missing because I know when it's set. I only listed the ones of which I don't know where in the timeline they're set.

All I know is that TS3 (PC) is the 'first', then 25 years later TS1 (PC) and another 25 years after that TS2 (PC).
The timeline of the console games is a mystery to me, I simply know TS (PS2), Bustin' Out (PS2) and The Urbz are direct sequels to each other. TS2 (PS2) is set either just before or just after TS2 (PC) due to Don, Nina and Dina being in them.
