It takes a Village!

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/48368_130819170756banner2.jpg

You've just bought the shell of a house in the middle of nowhere, and realised that not only do you want to raise a family here, but you need some basic businesses too! Guess you'll be building more than a home here...

Qualification to host - Site member since 2007, and participant in 'Build A Business'

Concept - There will be 6 rounds, with the intention of building up the basics of a small willage or hamlet. Round one will involve a residential lot, rounds 2-5 will be a mixture of residential or community lots, with a pool of themes to choose from. Every contestant will build or decorate 6 lots. Template lots will be provided for every round, none larger than 2x3 so that people with older/slower computers won't have issues.

Some rounds will be CC-free, some will be decor-based, and some will be build-based - the idea behind this contest is to cover a wide area of ground, so that people with different skill sets can all show off what they are best at =]

There must be a minimum of 10 contestants, and a maximum of 20.

Requirements - Nightlife is required, as I cannot get my AGS to run a base-only game. If you do not have NL but have another EP, please let me know, and I can make an alternate version of the lots. People of all skills and levels are more than welcome. Familiarity with taking good screenshots would be helpful, as would a basic level of experience with smaller lots.

Rules -

- This contest is for TS2 only
- CC-wall paint and flooring is allowed in any round - this is the ONLY EXCEPTION.
- Free CC only, in CC-inclusive rounds
- CC-Free rounds are exactly that - use of any CC (other than walls) during these rounds will result in points being docked.
- All images must meet MTS guidelines (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=330412) .
- All but the first image should be under tags. :alarm: For clarification, as I am an idiot and forgot to put it in the main post, you can have UP TO 8 images for each round, including one floor plan, and one front-on shot. In rounds with more than one storey, an additional floor plan may be added for each floor. :alarm:
- In rounds where a building shell is provided, ONLY interior walls may be built/altered.
- Any requirements for the lot may be inside or out, where appropriate
- Have fun! MANDATED FUN FOR ALL.

Judges - I would prefer to have 4 judges for this (this didn't happen, but we still have 3 and that's A-OK!) - I will judge, as it is my contest and I am power-mad wanting things to go smoothly, so that leaves three slots. I would like to have an emergency judge as well, although if that doesn't happen, it's fine. If you would like to judge, please post 1 shot of a lot you yourself have built, and one shot of a room you have decorated (these do not have to be the same lot).

JUDGES ARE - myself, ekrubynaffit, and AdonisPluto

Points will be awarded as such, with each judge awarding the following to give a potential 75 points per round -

LOT THEME - up to 5 points

BUILD SKILL - up to 5 points

PLAYABILITY - up to 5 points

OVERAL THEME - for the village as a whole. up to 5 points

REQUIREMENTS - up to 5 points

Contestants!

Round One - Hometime!

ROUND ONE OBJECTIVES - Build, decorate and renovate your home! You will be provided with a basic foundation, and your task is to build a home onto this - whether this is a single-storey home is up to you in this round. The steps must stay in the same places, but can be switched out for nicer-looking ones. The following rooms MUST be included - 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen. It'd be a good idea to leave space for an extension some day...

This is a CC-free round, by which I mean the rules apply - CC walls and floor are allowed, but nothing else is.

Round Two - Beginnings of a business district!

ROUND 2 OBJECTIVES - Decorate and renovate this shell of a building, using ONE theme from the 'community' listing below. NO walls can be altered, and you CANNOT use the roof-top areas as anything other than roofs. A balcony may be added (it should be self-explanatory where this can be added, but if not please ask.) Points will be docked if the MUST HAVE items for your chosen theme are not used, one per missing item. This round will close in 3 weeks time, at MIDNIGHT GMT on Monday 23rd September. CC is allowed in this round, as long as it meets the rules (free only)

Round Three - Neighbour Time!

ROUND 3 OBJECTIVES - Decorate and complete this derelict building, using ONE theme from the 'residential' listing below. Seems easy, huh? Sadly, renovating this house becomes a little trickier when Town Planning gets in touch with you and tells you this is a listed building, with an architecturally important staircase made by Sir Hristopher Simmington that can't be moved, redesigned or painted, and built in such a (ridiculous) way that all walls are supporting walls, and therefore can't be moved. Lucky for you, the original roof was destroyed in a storm and no-one knows quite what it looked like, so any roof is permitted as long as it is in keeping with the local style. Points will be docked if the MUST HAVE items for your chosen theme are not used, one per missing item. This round will close on an EXTENDED DATE OF MIDNIGHT GMT on Monday 21th October. CC is allowed in this round, as long as it meets the rules (free only)

Round Four - More Business!

ROUND 4 OBJECTIVES - Decorate and renovate this shell of a building, using ONE theme from the 'community' listing below. NO walls can be altered, but additional floors may be added and rooftops can be used. Overhanging areas are allowed. Points will be docked if the MUST HAVE items for your chosen theme are not used, one per missing item. This round will close in 2 weeks time, at MIDNIGHT GMT on Monday 4th November. CC is NOT allowed in this round. LotAdjuster is NOT allowed to add extra details or to add walls/overhang nearer to the edges of the lot.

Round Five - A Real Builder

ROUND 5 OBJECTIVES - An empty plot has finally become available in your village, and you've been given planning permission to build on it. Sadly, you were so excited at the prospect of building somewhere from the ground-up, you didn't read the details of the land correctly, and now are the somewhat bashful owner of a small plot complete with a large, beautiful tree - a large, beautiful tree with a Tree Preservation order on it. Build and decorate any ONE theme from the 'residential' listing below that you have not yet used, without moving or changing in any way the tree in the lot. This round will close in 2 weeks time, at MIDNIGHT GMT on Monday 25th November. CC is NOT allowed in this round.
NO LOT ADJUSTER

ROUND 6 OBJECTIVES
An empty plot has become available in your village, but you are only allowed to build a community lot on it because it has been designated as community land. You are not allowed to change the bridge OR in any way or to change the water depth or shape of the river in any way unless you are adding the pond as part of the 'Perfect park'. So change river? Yes with pond in Perfect park. Change bridge? No.
EXTENDED DATE
So build and decorate any ONE theme from the ‘community’ listing below that you have not yet used. The round will finish at MIDNIGHT GMT on Monday 23rd December. Only build CC is allowed in this round.

THEMES

Rounds 2-6 are a little bit multiple choice - you will be picking from these themes, so pick carefully! You will build 2 further residential homes, and 3 community/business lots, and there are separate themes for each. Choose carefully, because you can only use a theme once, and there will be points given for good use of the theme. Please note - 'CAN INCLUDE' items are (usually) EP-specific items, and are therefore not necessary items as that wouldn't be fair on everyone.
- (please note, you will be building 2 of these and cannot choose the same theme twice, so choose wisely. 1 round will allow CC, and the other will be CC-Free)

'Middle-Class Dream' - A two-storey lot, built for a well-off (but not rich) family of five.
MUST include - 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large kitchen, piano. CAN include - gardening plots, driveway, greenhouse.

'Grandma's House' - A single-storey home for an older sim. MUST include - guest bedroom, separate living room and dining room, al least 6 plants in garden. CAN INCLUDE - greenhouse, sewing machine, quilted items.

'Modern Monstrosity' - No higher than 3 storeys, built for a sim with more money than taste. MUST include - at least 8 large windows, balcony, hot tub. CAN INCLUDE - pagoda roof, driveway, helicopter pad.

'Beachside Beauty' - No higher than 3 storeys, with a balcony and a patio. MUST HAVE - 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, somwhere to swim. CAN HAVE - driveway, fixer-upper car, pool slide.

'Mean Maisonette' - A two-storey home, built for 2 sims starting out. MUST HAVE - combined kitchen/diner, 1 bedroom, bathroom with tub. CAN HAVE - gardening plot, spiral staircase, ceiling fan.

- (please note, there are more options here as you will build 3 of these. One will be CC-free, one will allow building CC (doors, windows, columns, stairs), and one will allow all CC)

'Perfect Park' - A simple lot for a simple village. MUST HAVE - pond, at least 3 trees, public bathrooms. CAN HAVE - playpark, football net, coffee cart

'Miniature Market' - A grocery store for everyone in the village. MUST INCUDE - at least one chiller cabinet and one freezer unit, 2 checkouts, magazine rack. CAN INCLUDE - on-counter game rack, phone kiosk, photo booth

'Village Local' - a watering hole for everyone. MUST HAVE - 1 bar, at least 4 chairs, beer garden. CAN INCLUDE - swingset, pool table, tv

'Community Center' - Work out, rest and play. MUST HAVE - public locker rooms, gym equipment, pool. CAN HAVE - sauna, massage tables, vending machines.

'Classy Clothes' - Everyone has to wear something. MUST HAVE - at least 1 booth, at least 1 mens rail, at least 1 ladies rail. CAN HAVE - mannequins, seating (for bored spouses), jewellery stand.

'Kids Corner' - A shop for all your kids needs. MUST INCLUDE - at least 2 toys, highchair, cot. CAN INCLUDE - crafting table, drawing table, rocker toy.

'Cool Cuisine' - a restaraunt for the whole village. MUST INCLUDE - at least 3 tables with sufficient chairs, cooking stove, restaraunt podium. CAN INCLUDE - booth seating, bar, dancefloor area.

Applications will be accepted until all 20 slots are filled, or until the end of the application round, 2 weeks after this post goes live, at midnight (GMT) on Monday 2nd September.

I have finished my house - should I upload the pictures?

Moment of panic. My house has no theme - but it does not have to for the first round right? Or does it?

Leefish, Karen_Lorraine, joandsarah77, HugeLunatic, welcome on board!

To answer questions in order -

joandsarah77 - applications close at the latest at midnight GMT on Monday the 2nd of September, 2 weeks from yesterday's date. If there are 20 slots filled before then, the application will close then but entries can be accepted until the 2nd.

HugeLunatic, I'd prefer if the CC-free rounds were free of everything but wall and floor decor, to try and keep things on an even keel, but I am aware that a lot of people have default replacements and not everyone uses an AGS config to go CC-free, so I will have a think on this and get back to you.

Leefish - it's ok, don't panic (find a towel). The round one lot is your house - I can't tell you what to put in there! Just the rooms you need to have =]

ALSO, please welcome judge number 2, after myself - ekrubynaffit!

:alarm: For clarification, as I am an idiot and forgot to put it in the main post, you can have UP TO 8 images for each round, including one floor plan, and one front-on shot. In rounds with more than one storey, an additional floor plan may be added for each floor. I will edit this into the main post for future reference!:alarm:

This looks cool! Talk about coincidence, literally four days after I decide to spend the last of my birthdaymoney on The Sims 2 and a nice contest pops up, great way to get familiar with the game. Which brings me to my question though, in the first post it says that some building and picturetaking skills might come in handy, obv I haven't built much in TS2 yet... Is it quite different from building for TS3? Not sure whether I should join or not, it sounds like so much fun but I don't want to be that person that drops out after a couple of days... Also, any price-limitations on the houses or can we do whatever we want?

joandsarah77
20th Aug 2013, 10:51 PM
Welcome to the Sims 2 Klaartje68! It's different to me, although I find it easier to build in sims 2 because I have trouble seeing the grid in sims 3. I think most sims 3 builders would find sims 2 building, especially the roofs more limiting, but the cheats are the same and much of it is the same.

Leefish, you are already finished! Oh gosh I have to get my skates on. Hopefully I will get round 4 of the build a business finished today and can then start on this.

@Klaartje - taking screenshots in sims2 is pretty easy - the only real difference from Sims3 is dont use the ingame camera. Use Fraps or Gadwin or just good old print to screen and copy paste into your image editor (I use photoshop 7, but it works with GIMP etc as well).

Klaartje68 and Hencing, lovely to have you guys join!

Klaartje68, there is no limit on how much the lot is worth in this round, just keep the no cc rule in mind =]

AdonisPluto, It'll be lovely to have you on-board as a judge - just need one more now!

Just a quick note for you guys - I'll mainly be posting in the evenings (GMT) due to work commitments, but I will try and check in on how things are going during the day via my phone, so if there is anything urgent you need to ask, either post here or send me a PM.

I hope this is getting enough publicity as it's a great concept for a contest. I have my house mostly built now. I'm also posting after searching through my own replies to posts as I could hardly find this thread, so yes it's also a bump.

What happens if we have maxis items defaulted? Like my curtains are defaulted as are my roof edges.

I wish I had built this in AGS now. :/

Here is my entry :) Let me know if I have to change anything.

As I'm not too sure on some of the rulings on defaults I left off curtains. My white roof edge default is still there. I also have many of my bedding's defaulted-although it's hard to remember what exactly-but I'm fairly sure those are maxis ones. I built this with a slightly older couple in mind as I didn't see any theme or age given. I only noticed raise a family here up the top later. A country loving younger couple can still raise a small family here. Also because this is two story I am assuming I get at least one more shot for the top floor If it's still 8 I will take one out.

My entry

I use some bedding defaults from HP - I am unsure if these are defaults in the pics. That's it, apart from wall and floor cc. I love Shasta's LondonArches wall paints. I am using those all the time at the moment.

gagafanu it looks nice, but you are going to have to do your pictures like ours. Screenshots with all but the front under a spoiler. Otherwise the judges can't judge. They also require floor plans (top down) and usually the back as well. You only have 6 and there has to be at least 8 pictures. Hopefully Loaf will be back soon and tell us if it's 9 or 10 with the second story.

How do a do the spolier and i add the Floor plan soon

joandsarah77
25th Aug 2013, 2:49 AM
First you need a screenshot program as your pictures are way too small for a judge to see properly. There are plenty around for free. I use Fraps then I export them to Gimp to change them from BMP (way too large for the board) into jpgs. http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=MTS2:Creator_Guidelines/Screenshot_Basics If you use Gimp it is now 'export' and not 'save as' as it previously used to be.

To make a spoiler you need
before your pictures and [/spoiler*] after your pictures but remove that asterisk.

joandsarah77
25th Aug 2013, 4:31 AM
Your first image says it's hotlinked. You must upload your pictures to a photo hosting site like Photobucket. Hotlinking takes peoples bandwidth. The size looks a lot better. Also instead of double posting which a mod may jump on you for as it's against site rules, you need to edit your last post to add something new.

Also I hope you didn't spend 20 hours on your images!

Looks good. :gjob: Also I think of these contests as a way of improving. A few years ago all I built were boxes and now I dabble around with CFE and differing roofs.

One tip: With your floor plan shot or any shot that shows outside, click on the design key to remove the grid lines. That will improve how it looks.

Sorry for being a little AWOL guys, work has been a little bit of a balancing act this week and this is the first time I've had chance to sit down at my PC - I still haven't finished my 'Build a Business' entry! Things should have settled down a bit now, but please feel free to prod me either in PM on here or in the #social/#create channels when I am around if you need to get my attention.

With regards to the defaults thing, I've had time to think about it and come to the conclusion that defaults are OK to include, as it's not practical to expect people to remove them or work in an AGS setup for many different reasons, so don't worry too much about them. This is meant to be fin, and having to do a complete overhaul of how you game isn't going to be fun (for most people, at least!)

Jo, your images are fine - I have edited the main post to reflect the image numbers/requirements, as it was a little hidden in a comment before, but here it is again - ' For clarification, as I am an idiot and forgot to put it in the main post, you can have UP TO 8 images for each round, including one floor plan, and one front-on shot. In rounds with more than one storey, an additional floor plan may be added for each floor. I will edit this into the main post for future reference!'

Everyone's houses are looking really good so far! gagafanu, welcome to the site =]

Good, I figured as much for the additional floor. :)

*takes a deep breath to calm self* I'd like to enter as well. I'll be back sometime in the next couple of days with my round one entry. I would try to do it tonight, but work decided to mess with my schedule this week, and make me work on a day I usually have off. And I'm kinda freaking out at the moment since this is the first contest I've ever decided to enter. Hopefully I won't get lazy and give up halfway in, or lose track of time and be really late with an entry. ~VP

Edit: Does it count as CC if I have some mods that extend color options between maxis items? Like if EA made a matching couch and chair without matching colors and I have a download that extends the color options so that they match? I assume recolors of maxis items are out too, correct? And extender/completer sets? I assume they would be CC but it's better to ask. I could simply rip my Downloads folder out of my game, or try to get AGS to cooperate with my new computer, but it'd be easier not to have to. ~VP

joandsarah77

The best way is to toggle cc off under game setting's VP. That way only maxis items and defaults show. Recolours and extender sets are cc.

Here is my Round 1 No CC house

This is a modern build with an upside-down floor plan. The ground floor contains the bedrooms and the bathroom. The upper floor is an open plan living area. I hope you like it.

Judges: 2 extra pictures are included, one for the second storey and the other for the upper terrace. No CC whatsoever was used.

Defaults used: Roof trims and roof edgers

I've added a front porch and there is room to extend one day above the kitchen, with a pool in the garden.

Great new entries - WOW!
I was gonna go modern (now I'm glad I didn't ;)) I just can't build a kitchen without upper cabinets! So, I had to use the SSN set. Not modern. *sigh*

Quick question... is the store stuff considered CC? What about Pets/Lifestyles/Castaway? And NO recolors right? Can I still use CFE and other building cheats? What about invisible recolors?
OK - that's more than one question. But nothing matches!!! Yikes!

What if, like, I have HL's backless tub defaulted... that's a default, so as long as I declare it, I'm good, right?

...and yes. I'll be jumping in soon :luff:

ekrubynaffit

I would say store stuff, pets/lifestyles/castaway is downloads, personally I even think defaults are downloads as you are really physically putting something new into the game, and I think you guys are are really lucky to be able to use them and also cc walls and floors, as to me no cc is nothing extra at all that has gone into the game. But yes Catherine, backless tub if its defaulted is ok, since defaults are allowed :)

Alright, here's my Round One Entry.

This is by far the first house that I've decorated that I'm actually proud of. Probably because I modeled a lot of areas after homes that I've lived in.

Defaults used: Phaenoh's White Roof Trim, and Maranatah's Wall Top Replacement in White

http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b571/VioletPadfoot/It%20Takes%20a%20Villiage%20Challenge/Sims2EP102013-08-2706-46-45-28_zps2b6d5511.jpg

It's set up for a family with a child aged daughter and two pets, and playtested for a sim week with the Traveller family. No foot stomping or other issues. It spans three floors including a basement. There is room to expand upstairs over the basement entrance and back porch. Which the Travellers had to do when Trisha had twins.

Floorplan of Ground Floor. It features a kitchen, table for four and a highchair, a computer desk, two bookcases with a chair, and a stereo. There's a pet dish in the hallway leading to the basement.

I just had a thought, along the lines of invisible cc. I might have furniture with added slots for deco items. Does the game allow deco items be placed on top of a chest of draws? I did that in both bedrooms. The lot would still package as no cc though so I guess they could be classed as defaults.

Thoughts on that Loaf?

I finished my house - I think... I 'm checking in for a ruling on invisified OMSP's.

It's gonna be a tough call: if we can use defaults with added slots, then we should be able to use OMSP's - so long as the stuff we're putting on the slots is not CC, of course. Right?
Either that or absolutely NO CC (including defaults) and that really wouldn't be any fun ;)

BTW - If I turn off CC at the control panel, like Jo suggested, I only have 1 (one) door! The UNI dorm door... and 2 windows, and I'm missing bunches and bunches of other things that I know are not CC. For some reason AGS has an astricks next to everything in the catalog! I made a new AGS just for this contest, it's everything except H&M and M&G, with no CC - except the hacks I can't do without.

Do I remember something about AGS#2 having problems? 'Cause this IS my #2.

Oh, and, are the art nouveau non-modular open-underneath stairs original to the game? Or are they an override from HL? I'm not changing their color (I know Lunie enabled that - but what about the open-underneath part?) These are the full staircase ones, not the modulars... :help:

Thanks! :Pint:

Personally, I think OMSPs are going too far - you are fully aware that those are CC. The idea is to try and do it without CC, not to find a way to get the CC allowed. Sometimes it is hard to tell with defaults, but for the rest you can just not use something if it has a star on it.

ekrubynaffit
28th Aug 2013, 2:58 AM
Agree with Lee omsp's are cc, you can place some items on some dressers, I think this was included in either Mansion & Gardens or AL, Catherine it sounds like one of the hacks you said you left in is causing everything to show up as cc, I had that once, took forever to figure out which one it was, never heard of an AGS problem though, am using my AGS 2 at the moment and theres no cc in that and no hacks and everything is fine. Try taking out the hacks and see if its one of those maybe :) Art Nouveau stairs I believe were solid, as far as I can remember off hand the only open underneath ones were the steel type ones, but don't quote me not 100% sure!

joandsarah77

I have some maxis items, such as the driveways show up as cc and they disappear when I toggle cc off. I just keep in mind what I know really is maxis in cases like that, toggle it on and place then turn it off again. If it shows as cc in Clean Installer it shouldn't be used, which would include OMPS's.

I think it should be more a matter of everyone trying to use maxis as much as they can. It's not like every round is cc free and I enjoy trying to build cc free.
I think if people have defaults they should try and avoid using it if they can and use something else. Setting a limit on the amount of defaults used could be another option. Wall tops, roof edging, bedding and curtains are quite common, so maybe no more than 4 or 5 defaults per building? Just an idea.

HugeLunatic
28th Aug 2013, 3:42 AM
I think the only defaults allowed should be textures, not objects. And even then, as jo said, maybe limit it to so many uses. For me bedding, curtains and plumbing are what I can't seem to go without.

CatherineTCJD

OH! D'uh! I think I just figured out where all my stars are coming from! I recategorized EVERYTHING (Thank you, Phae, for showing how to recat stuff ;)) Normally I keep those files in my Bins folder... But with AGS I popped 'em in with DLs. Hence the stars. (Right?)

I only used one OMSP - to get that blasted game controller up off the floor. I know it actually does go up on something, but I couldn't find a surface it would snap onto. And, I just can't leave it laying in the middle of the floor! What table does it naturally go on?

I don't have a solid Art Nouveau staircase... I think I must've defaulted the open-underneath ones for it. I'll take my "Hacks_MustHave" folder out and see what comes up in the catalog. Thanks for thinkin' with me :)

So are curtains what you mean by default textures? They have the same shape but use other colours/fabric textures.

Also you can get default plumbing?! I didn't even know such a thing existed. Where do I find that?

I love seeing how everyone is using different items in this - I've seen a few things I haven't looked at twice before, and the differences in everyone's styles are great to see. Jones, HL, Violet, your lots are looking fantastic!

With regards to OMSP's - they're CC, and can only be used in CC rounds. Defaults (as I said in my previous posts) are fine, declaring them is great but if you can't remember exactly what you have (I know not everyone has download folders with subfolders in subfolders!) it's not the biggest issue.

Going to do a clear-up of the main post now and get it looking a little tidier and including contestants and judges =]

Also, re: Maxis items showing as CC in the catalogue, as Catherine noted, it happens if you have either re-organised your catalogue yourself, or use a mod to do so (like the one by Phaenoh or BlueSoup). I've had many a moment of frustration due to this myself recently!

That's not the swing that came with SSN or FT???? Oh no!
If it's a "CC" swing, I'll trade it out for the metal set. Did I miss anything else? I really messed up my catalog with completely reorganizing everything - but, I know where everything is ;)

Another quick question - When posting with my 'spoiler' tags - how do I make it so the screenshots don't show across the bottom of my post? I just want the button to be there, no preview pictures. Thanks!

Loaf
28th Aug 2013, 9:34 PM
The swing is a preorder thing. As far as I'm concerned , if something is made by EA, whether it's from an EP/SP, from the Store, or from a pre-order, it's fine. TS3 conversions are counted as CC, because they were not made for TS2 originally.

justJones
28th Aug 2013, 9:38 PM
Cat, you can't make it so the screenshots aren't at the bottom, unless you use a hosting site like photobucket or something. If they are uploaded to the post, they will be at the bottom.

CatherineTCJD

Catherine, lovely house. I like your patio idea.

Can I ask a reverse question? How do you guys make your pictures show up at the bottom? Lol, I just paste in Img lines from photobucket into my main post, which is what I have always done and wondered what tricks you were all doing to make small pictures show up as well.

Thanks HL, I had no idea bathroom defaults existed. I'm going to have to try them out even without pictures. :bunny: Is the base game cheap toilet in there? That is one I would like to default.

Also, really shop stuff is allowed? I am still going to try and do cc free including walls and floors. To me it's the spirit of the thing.

There are still some spots open, arenīt there? Iīd really like to join. I love building and have been lurking around for the last contests for inspiration and to just marvel at the prettiness.

I made a new empty neighborhood, called it Little Loaf and plopped down the house. The neighborhood has no sims yet and Iīd like to keep it this way for now, but this means I can only take pictures in buy and build mode. And I never really took pictures to upload. I hope they are okay. I have white trim roof defaults and defaults that change the top of the walls to white.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386256

Here is the ground floor and the rest of the lot in top down view:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386263

The second floor showing both bedrooms, the main bathroom and a little reading nook in front of the bathroom. (There is only one full bath, so someone might have to wait to use it.)
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386261

The kitchen:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386265

There is a chess board in the garden. I wanted to have at least one object to learn every skill:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386262

The kidīs room is rather small, so some toys found a home downstairs:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386258

There is still room for some toys and a dresser. A bed and a place to do school work also fit:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386264

The dining table hides behind the stairs:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386259

There is a mirror right in the entryway to remind sims, if they want to run out in their underwear, that they could maybe change first. It probably wonīt stop them, but it can also be used to study charisma without disrupting anything:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1386260

I started out quite different with dark windows and flat roofs and I loved the outside, but itīs really hard to use dark wood inside without cc. Nothing matches. There are so many different dark wood tones, that I ended up with white again, so it would fit with all the ikea stuff.

Thank you, Tiffany! The BPS one (and the link provided in the comments below it) helps a lot :) I'm trying to build "My Hacienda" - the house I hope we can buy in RL. Nice houses Abel and Cyshix! Glad to have you both join us ;)
How many are we now?

On a sad note... hubby just left for the vets with our "Old Lady" kitty, Sweeney. (Morhag McSweeney is her full name) She will not be coming back. Her little 16 yr old body is failing quickly now; her twin broke her arm and died on the operating table (bone cancer) last March. Sweeney has been on a steady downhill since then. Today is the day
...I think I'll go build something. I can't focus on anything - maybe that will help. :(

@Cyshix - hallo - welcome to loaf contest :D

@catherine - my heart goes out to you. I admire you for your strength taking this decision for the pet that depends on you. It does not make it easier for you, but it is best for that cat. You will remember all the happy times you had together.

Thanks for all the welcoming words. I am really excited to join and improve my building and decorating. And I love the idea behind the contest, because it means Iīll get a nice little starter hood at the end.

Love your house Cyshix. The garden is especially cute. How do you hide the blue control console when taking pictures? I couldnīt figure that out.

And it is really horrible to lose a pet, so I am very sorry you have to go through that Catherine. I hope building something works as a distraction.

One of the perks of being new to TS2 is that I don't have a huge downloads folder that my fingers are itching to use. I've challenged myself to learn two new tricks each round, although this round was mostly about ingoring my TS3-reflexes (*oooh that's a nice chair, let's CASt... oh wait....*). TBH, it was better than I thought, what I struggled most with was landscaping, that is so much easier in sims3.
Sorry to hear about your cat, Catherine... Can't imagine how painful it must be to be faced with a decision like that. My thoughts are with you and your family :)

Cyshix, nice roomy house. Not to be a downer, but the stairs. did you use a stair window? It isn't allowed if you did. If not how did you get wall paper on your stairs as I'd love to know the trick.

Catherine, I'm so sorry to hear that. :( We lost our 15 year old Kitty a month ago now to kidney failure, we had to have the vet put her down.

Klaartje68 I like the position of your kitchen As soon as I saw your picture I thought, I wonder if she came over from playing the sims 3. Welcome to the dark side *offers cookie* You know how I know? The way you set your spoiler tags is how they do it for the sims 3 contests. You don't have to do that over here-although you can if you want.
A few tips-always keep the walls up. In small rooms use TAB and the W, E, S, X and Z keys. There may be more but I tend to just do it rather then remember what key does what. Use a red pause mod to take away the red lines and if you go into buy or build mode it takes away the sims queue. You don't need to have sims in a house to take photos though.
Gardening without M&G is hard, that's the last SP/EP and it comes with a lot of plants.

Thanks jo! Guess I will take your tips to be the new trick I learn for next round! Ha, didnt know it would be that obvious, the difference between the two types of people. Will have to hunt down M&G then, and see if I can find it somewhere cheaply. Otherwise the no-cc rounds will be a PITA...

Just a heads up, I don't think M&G without AL (Apartment Life) works to well. Not sure why, but they kind of go together. I'd suggest if you like sims 2 that you get all EP's and most sp's while you can. EA has stopped selling them.

VioletPadfoot

@Klaartje68: If you find M&G (and not part of a stuff pack) that doesn't cost and arm and a leg, will you please share where you found it? My Mom's looking for a copy, especially since I stole my AL disk back to re-install, and can't seem to find one that's not way overpriced.

@catherine: I'm sorry to hear about you kitty. It sucks having to make that decision. When I was 15, I had to do the same thing for my Sugar. He was MY cat and he knew it. He'd let me do what ever I wanted, and listened when I told him to do something. But he had some form of feline disease he was born with that showed up when he was 2. The vet told us we could put him down or watch him waste away at home. My Mom made me make the decision and it was, and still is, one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. ~VP

The table has been fixed now (thanks to Lee, as I am a bit useless with coding, despite the help of lovely people like Jones and Lee trying to help me understand it.

Regarding 'overall theme of the village as a whole' - this isn't really judge-able in the first round, because, well, it's the first round! As the contest progresses though, each contestants entries should hopefully be building up a small village with similar looks - some of this will be helped by each person having their own 'style', but attention to details such as windows used, similar planting and so on will help. It's very much an open-to-interpretation thing, mind - my idea of a village may be very different to yours, and yours may be very different to another person in the contest.

Loaf? Everyone else? Am I the only one that is having an issue with the Round 2 lot? I loaded it up, but it has the residential mailbox and trashcan, and no phonebooth. It shows as a community lot in neighborhood view, and using the lot zoning cheat affects nothing. I'd like to get started building, but don't want to lose anything if there really is an issue. ~VP

And while we're on to stupid questions: I have OFB, does it make a difference to place a community lot in the regular neighbourhood or OFB-hood? It's easy enough to place it, but also easy to change the lot back to residential if you need to. Some items are only available on a residential or on a community lot.

Would it be best to leave the mailbox and trashcan, in case I might want to change it back to a residential lot, and only delete them when the building is done and the lot will permanently be zoned as a community lot?

And I guess I will also need to place the community trashcan? I donīt think I have ever built a community lot this way. I thought about simply recreating the building shell on an empty community lot, but if the rezoning is perfectly safe, I might take advantage of the ability to place residential only objects.

leefish
4th Sep 2013, 2:06 PM
Yes, you will need to place the trashcan and phone. I have loads of trashcans so my one neat sim does not collapse from overwork on the lot :D

joandsarah77
4th Sep 2013, 2:08 PM
You don't need the mail box on a residential lot if you never move a sim in. If it's only ever in build mode it's fine. I believe the bin has something to do with how the game reads the edges of the lot. I remembering hearing about that years ago so I'm not sure if that's true or a myth. Since they come with them I figure it's best to play safe so I always place a community phone and bin on any lot I changed to community.

Loaf
4th Sep 2013, 2:10 PM
Guys, I'm going to re-build in a community lot and reupload - I didn't realise that it hadn't rezoned correctly, and I'm really sorry about that. The new version will be up shortly, along with screenshots of the lot. Apologies for this - I've not had an issue with this in my game before, and it didn't occur to me that this would not be the case for everyone!

joandsarah77
4th Sep 2013, 2:16 PM
Nothing wrong with the zoning Loaf, it only needs to have the community phone and bin placed and the residential ones deleted. I certainly won't be changing mine, it's 3/4 done.

When are the entries going to be added to the table and judged? I didn't really want to put up my round two lot before round one was judged.

Ok. So. I'm stumped. Too many choices; not enough possibilities (for my brain atm :faceslap:)

General question: Can the balcony I add span the gap to the second roof? But, I can't use the roof... so, probably "no" right? *le sigh*
...going to get moar coffee... c(_)

well, my balcony is overhanging the lot walls, so if that is not allowed I will just have to take the hit on the points.

Why not do the kids store Catherine? You could use both buildings and use the lot area as an interactive sales area :D

Overhanging lot walls on the 2-storey building is fine, but the 2nd roof is out of bounds - it's not structurally sound enough =D

CatherineTCJD
5th Sep 2013, 9:36 PM
Man!!! Who built this thing? ...*grumbles about 'code' and various other structural soundness problems - grrrrr* :anime:

Thanks Lee - I think I'll play around a bit with the toy store idea. I purposefully avoided "Toy Store" in the Build-a-Business contest. Maybe now's the time...

EDIT: "Kids Corner" = not strictly 'just' toys... I might be able to do that

No balconies on mine but I have built a pergola between the two buildings for climbing plants so I hope that is allowed. it's staying even if it isn't as I spent a heap of time getting plants on OMPS's into position. I'm playing more for fun anyway.

Catherine the theme and lot are kind of tricky, mine is more a combo of Village Local and Cool Cuisine because I couldn't make my mind up and it kept changing along the way.

Smarty pants! (we need a tongue-sticking-out smilie)

I figured that's what was meant, but I wanted to be sure. I call a baby's bed a crib.
A cot, to me, is a portable fold-up bed - usually with a metal frame and just canvas or a thin mattress. Not very comfy

I think I got a good start on this lot tonight... we'll see what I think when I look at it tomorrow.
This one is really NOT coming together for me. Hubster peeked over my shoulder tonight at one point and said, "What IS that?" I told him... he said, "Not your best work, hon." I started over again... He was right. *sigh*

See being Australian/British I know most of the average terms for items from both sides of the pond-which are mostly the same words that the Brits use, maybe you guys (American's) need to learn ours as well. ;)
cot-crib
nappy-diaper
boot-trunk
thongs-flip flops
chook-chicken

Sometimes I purposely use American words just so as not to confuse you guys, but other times I like to keep true to our own words.

suspenders are boggeling? Those are things used to hold up boys pants. I bought my son a pair of red clip ons when he was 2 because his waist was so skinny. So do I dare ask what else they are?

Suspenders: equals the things that ladies use to hold up their stockings (a garter belt). Those trouser holding up things are braces :D

joandsarah77

I know suspenders-braces are the same thing. I tend to call the ladies items just a garter. Never had any, they look most uncomfortable. Knee highs with elastic tops all the way if I need stockings. I try and avoid things like that and mostly wear pants.

Back on topic: one of the requirements for the community center is public locker rooms. Do they have to include actual lockers? Couldn't find them in my game, think that they are a UL-object (even CC-ones require UL). Or is it just a space for showers/toilets/etc. And are we allowed to make a closed walkway between the two buildings using fences?

leefish
6th Sep 2013, 9:14 AM
Well, I am making the community centre; the lockers from Uni SEEMED to not work on the comm lot I made for my other hood. The changing booth does though, so I have used those. Not as convincing as a locker, but more playable. I think it is ok to make a walkway using fences.

joandsarah77
6th Sep 2013, 9:14 AM
It says locker rooms, not lockers so you are okay there. Just toilets with a place to get dressed count as locker rooms.
You are allowed fences and I assumed half walls as they were allowed in other contests, although it doesn't say.

Loaf, are half walls allowed?

OK, so this is my version of the Round One lot - I've used wallpapers from Awesims, default bedding from HP, Phaenoh's roof trim defaults and Maranatah's wall default (these 2 are the nice, clean white trims that make my game look all tidy!) My lot is designed with a young-ish family in mind, 2 adults and 1 child, with a mix of modern and old design and furniture, built up through a succession of rented accommodation before taking the plunge and buying their own home. I'd extend things over the kitchen on the second floor, after taking the kitchen out a little over the back patio area.

Leetown Community Centre

Situated by the waterfront on the edge of Leetown's business district, the Leetown Community Centre offers a gym, pool, hottub, coffee bar and barbeque facilities. As a Leetown town-owned building it has the town logo prominently displayed on the front. Not all areas of town allow the bright pink neon fish (zoning laws) so not all community buildings are fortunate enough to have this logo. This one is an exception.

Ooooh - I love the sun tile NOT as a pool floor! Brill!
And "Whew!" I didn't even realize I had made my balcony an overhang too. When I went back to my lot (haven't been there for a few days) I was surprised to see it 'hangin' out there. I'm glad ya'll are doing that too - if we get docked, we all get docked together ;)
...OK, the construction crews lunch break is over, gotta get what I can out of them before tea-time.

You quick builders are making me nervous! I actually reread the first post three times to check the deadline is actually the 16th. (Fun story: a couple of weeks ago my BF and I were going on a trip with his family. Fridaynight at 11 pm we found out it was on the Saturday rather than the Sunday, that's how good we are at keeping track of time/appointments...) Just finished my R3-lot for Qbuilderz' contest so finally have time to start TS2 again! I still think this is a really cool contest-concept, looking forward to playing my finished 'hood at the end of this!

@klaartje - you may find this hard to believe, but I am actually a really slow builder. These lots seem to be nearly building themselves.

Round 2 Community Centre

My family, the Tester's, had great fun visiting this lot (numerous times to test things for me). They were always so eager to return :D

The black counters on the terrace and in the cafeteria are one tile buffet tables, so load when a sim is present on the lot.
