View Full Version : Simulators Salon

It has been suggested in various places here that MTS needs a general discussion forum for talk about The Sims in general and other simulation games by different publishers and developers. But as such a place does not exist yet, this thread here will have to serve for some of these needs.
Joined by their mutual disappointment in The Sims 4 the Receptacle Refugees have already begun to look beyond the Sims horizon in search for s(t)imulating entertainment and some have even begun their own projects and aspire to create the next competitor to the corporate behemoth that The Sims has become.

This is the place if you want to find out more about them.

If you're still uncertain on what should be in here, it is the place to discuss things like Cities: Skylines (http://www.citiesskylines.com/), Clockwork Empires (http://www.clockworkempires.com/) or simmythesim's Untitled Life Sim project (http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=563014) or Inge Jones' yet to be announced game.

Ideally you should provide links to anything you have come across, be it developer blogs, other forums or publisher sites. Or anything that deserves attention in this respect.

Lol I got sick of mine. It did what I expected thus proving that I could simulate people's housing decisions, but it was kinda (very) boring. But at least it gave me some sympathy for EA's quirky (stupid) gameplay that at least gives the user something to do to liven things up a bit :D

So, this is the thread where we use news articles to prove TS4 is a pile of balls, instead of our own, sound reasoning?

I'm really interested in playing Clockwork Empires. I've got it on my Steam wishlist since I'm not sure I want early access. I'd rather get it when it's done but it looks really fun. I wonder what sort of troubles my colonists are going to run into.

I've been tempted by Banished as well, but I don't know as much about it and I haven't got Cities: Skyline, since I'm not that much into SimCIty and frankly suck at it. I only got 4 to make neighbourhood maps for Sims 2.

Banished is very good, but the range of play is limited, and I got to the end of what I felt I wanted to do with it. Loved it while it was still fresh though

Banished in indeed very good, but I play mostly with mods, particularly the Colonial Charter mod, which adds a great deal.

Have people been pulling back their monies because it currently has a goal of 15,000 and only a little over 5,000 in funding.

Here's an article that critiques not only Sim City, but also all the other contenders in the city-building games.

From SimCity to, well, SimCity: The history of city-building games (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/10/from-simcity-to-well-simcity-the-history-of-city-building-games/)

And "Cities" is a noted member of the newest batch, of course.

Hey guys, I have an exciting announcement for Untitled Life Sim! The vision for Untitled Life Sim has changed. instead of being a The Sims clone, it will now become a hybrid of The Sims and SimCity.

I've thrown away most of what I have done from the previous two months, because it was really, really bad.

I've only been working on this new direction for the game for a day now, but I can say, the graphics look better than the cubes from Untitled Life Sim! Also, the project from now on, will be called... Sensville.

Here's a work in progress screenshot showing off the graphics! (I'm still working on adding interactions and the AI into the game, this should be much faster now, as I have learned from my mistakes.)

Planetbase (http://store.steampowered.com/app/403190/) comes out tomorrow. It looks to be a less detailed version of Banished with little replay value as far as base builders go (there's no pause or planning/blueprint mode, limited to 200 structures etc.) but I'm looking forward to it for what it is -- I think it'll be fun and engrossing for awhile working out a strategy. The developer said they were aiming for about 30 hours of content.

ETA:

And here's something new, ECO (http://www.strangeloopgames.com/eco/) by Strange Loop Games. It's a multiplayer wilderness simulation with limited resources and the possibility of destroying your world. It doesn't really appeal to me right now (the whole multiplayer aspects of it all with a bunch of people messing up my perfect world and all of that) but the concept is interesting enough that I'll follow along and see what comes of it. It certainly looks ambitious that's for sure.

If by that you mean building houses in build mode, then unfortunately, there are no build mode tools anymore.

SensVille now has a traffic simulation! Sens will use cars if their destination is too far away. Also, one of the fixes I made was particularly weird.

You're just as bad as EA!

Kidding. I'm kind of excited to see where you're going with this. I honestly would've stayed with the life sim formula, but with some added town management. Basically TS3, but on a slightly larger scale. Without getting rid of any of the life sim features like Build Mode, of course.

Actually SensVille is going to be a weird mashup of The Sims and SimCity, currently I'm planning to have The Sims life simulation, but juggling a few sims from different households at the same time, along with building a (rather small) town. It's an interesting idea, let's hope it makes for a good game.

Agreed. It's one of the major draws to The Sims for me. While I'm sad SimsVille never released, I don't think the concept would've lasted anyway. Too much overlap between simulating life and simulating a city doesn't sound like a thing that'll work out horribly well.

Inge Jones
18th Oct 2015, 10:21 PM
Well a compromise would be a small town like the TS3 towns, but properly populated with traffic and pedestrians. The majority of the buildings and cars can be statistically generated, while you can have a certain number of lots and households controllable.

simmythesim
19th Oct 2015, 4:01 PM
Let me do an EA and completely ignore your opinions. Just kidding, as much as I would love for an ultimate life sim game, I unfortunately cannot even build decent looking houses in The Sims, so asking me to design a build system is like asking a Hydrophobic sim to swim.

Anyway, exciting news is, the basic simulation is starting to "Get Together"! (heh), anyway bad pun aside, here is a video showing off the basic simulation, such as going to shops, working, going home, etc. Like I said, the traffic system is very basic, as Sens currently drive like they're drunk, anyway, here's the video! SmileBASIC for 3DS came out a couple days ago. It's in the e-shop for $10. A person who knows what they are doing, and doesn't mind being tortured with a unique version of the BASIC programing language, could possibly make themselves (as well as share) a little something to tote around. This app will later come to Wii U, and it will include the ability to use a full-sized keyboard. More information about what is new in this version, compared to the DS version known as PetitComputer, can be found here:

http://petitcomputer.wikia.com/wiki/SmileBASIC_(Petit_Computer_3)

For example, it is now currently possible to implement 3D and use the 3DS's built-in gyroscope features.

The animations are great! Unlike The Sims 4 where the animators try too hard to be funny, Planet Coaster seems to have animations with a nice balance between realistic and exaggerated.

Or looked at another way, with those cartoony unrealistic Planet Coaster "sims", it would have been hard to think of anything they did as being exaggerated. There is no comparison.

I don't care for cartoonish pixel people in any game, really, and I don't care for cartoonish exaggeration no matter what they look like. So I'm glad they didn't go there. But the cartoonish people seems to work for Planet Coaster, and it sure looks to me like it would be a lot more fun than TS4. I'm going to keep my eye on it for sure.

Mini Devblog - Zoning!

Source:
https://www.reddit.com/r/UntitledLifeSim/comments/3rc4oj/mini_devblog_zoning_part_1/

Text:

Originally, SensVille was supposed to have SimCity Societies building placing, which means that you were supposed to place buildings, one by one, tediously. While this was fine if you wanted to really control the placement and variety of your buildings, this caused placing city growth very very slow, so I ditched it for a traditional zoning approach.

While I have only been working on zone placing for, I don't know, 2 hours, I can say that this method feels much more fluid and tactile and *(insert marketing buzzwords here)*.

Anyway, currently, zones can be placed off road, which I'm not sure if they'll continue doing so, or have to be close to a road at all times.

Anyway, here is the code for the zone placing.

public class ZoneTool : MonoBehaviour {
RaycastHit RayCast;
public LayerMask tomato, potato;
List<int> x = new List<int>();
List<int>z = new List<int>();
public GameObject Res;

// Use this for initialization
void Start () {
tomato = ~tomato;

}

// Update is called once per frame
void Update () {
Ray ray = Camera.main.ScreenPointToRay (Input.mousePosition);
Physics.Raycast (ray, out RayCast,Mathf.Infinity,tomato);

gameObject.transform.position = RayCast.point;

for (int i = -3; i < 3; i++) {
PollutionScript.Res [Mathf.FloorToInt (gameObject.transform.position.z + i), Mathf.FloorToInt (gameObject.transform.position.x)] = 1;

for (int z = -3; z < 3; z++) {
PollutionScript.Res [Mathf.FloorToInt (gameObject.transform.position.z+i), Mathf.FloorToInt (gameObject.transform.position.x + z)] = 1;

}
}

for (int x = 0; x < PollutionScript.Res.GetLength(0); x++) {
for (int y = 0; y < PollutionScript.Res.GetLength(1); y++) {
if(PollutionScript.Res[x,y] == 1)
{
if(Physics.CheckSphere(new Vector3(y,0,x), 3f, potato) == false)
Instantiate (Res,new Vector3(y,0,x),Quaternion.identity);
}
}
}

}

}

What the code basically does is:

Shoot some rays(this is how unity games determine what the player is pointing at)

Make the zone placing block align with where the ray hit.

The ground that the mouse hit becomes marked for residential.

The script then checks all areas to see which ones are marked
Residential.

It then proceeds to build on the zone if there are no buildings occupying it.

Currently, there is no happiness requirement for people to build houses, so you could zone Residential next to the factory and everyone will still move in just as if the air was perfectly clean.

Anyway, enough typing, here's a picture!
http://i.imgur.com/DGRy3F3.jpg
By the way, the buildings spawn places remind me of SimCity 2000 to 4, so you could have a a few blocks worth of houses on one street.

Software Inc. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/362620) is an early -- like really early by the looks of it -- access game on steam that's getting a lot of positive reviews. I had to laugh looking at some of the pics because there seems to be cars and seasons and they said it was partly inspired by The Sims. :lol:
Construct and design buildings for optimal working conditions. Hire people to design and release software, so you can defeat the simulated competition and take over their businesses. Manage and educate your employees to make sure they are skilled and satisfied with their job.

Software Inc. combines tycoon gameplay with multi-story building mechanics, employee management and a simulated market. It is inspired by games like Game Dev Tycoon, Prison Architect, The Sims and Theme Hospital.

I find it interesting how the reflection methods are similar to the way reflections are done in the Sims 3- essentially taking a cubemap of a stripped down version of the room, or a view from above the lot.

If only the shadows were done better! I really wish there were a way to stop shadows from fading off so close to the camera.

I don't think there is many similar games out with a similar historic view, that let's you just build and control the lives of the little sims. It's the modern games, but not historic I think.

You can't just play city building without war there can you. The Ceasar building games are older I think. At least for me I think it's Ceasar something.

I dunno, I'm only a few hours in.

It could also, I guess, be Imperium Romanum. But it really does sound like Caesar, speaking personally. (What were the graphics like?)

It looked like those Pharaoh and Ceasar games as I remember, so probably yes. Imperium Romanum I have never heard about *googles* ... oh you mean Rome? I'm not even sure I bought it.

Work at Paradox, the video:

If you liked or were interested in that video here's an interview from last year with Paradox's CEO that I thought was great. Whether these videos are sincere or just good public relations I don't but they're miles apart from the outrageously off putting things we hear from EA. Even if it's all talk at least they know what to say!

Wow, it's Seasons for Cities: Skylines!

Kind of disappointed that they're not doing rotating seasons.

Anyways, Black Desert's super-detailed character creator is out for free:

I like the use of sliders + pushing & pulling, but more sliders around certain areas like the eyes would be much better, and it definitely needs better labeling.

Edit: Also the "Stop moving I'm trying to edit your face" issue.

I think this is the game my friend was telling me about a couple of days ago. I'll have to ask her.

Pity there aren't any ordinary people in it. In the world these games are set in, are there no civilians who don't have to take part in what looks like some sort of strife?

This is the first time they've tackled seasons, which I suspect is not easy programming.

I imagine it is a challenge and the fact their expansion packs are $15 has to play a part as well. It's still disappointing the pack isn't going to be fully integrated into the existing game though. (I'm assuming we're talking about CitySkylines.)

I don't think it's actually seasons. I think it's visual effect only, apart from in the "snowy" regions when it will be winter all year around.

Honeywell

Yeah, a bit of weather and a temperature system seems to be the extent of the "Seasons" content. Cosmetic rain and fog are being added to the other maps but then everything else looks to be reserved for the dedicated snow maps. I'm assuming it's all going to be lovely and worthwhile for fans -- the screen shots were gorgeous -- but I would want more. lol

Here's the announcement post on Steam: Announcing Cities: Skylines - Snowfall (http://steamcommunity.com/games/255710/announcements/detail/954002629767871034)

Do we actually have to set up the routes? It's not like they can leave out ploving in certain areas I'm assuming.

Lately I have been playing Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, slowly working my way through the scenarios. So Planet Coaster definitely looks miles ahead. :)

I'm on a CC map in Cities Skyline, playing with mods as I see useful and use lots of CC buildings. I just found out how to take pictures and they are the same size as my monitor.

It's a wierd angle, but 62k isn't that much population is it? I haven't found any population mod yet. Anyone can suggest some?

You probably want to use Get Fudged, the SimCity-inspired mod that artificially increases your population count.

Ha that is just fab. I'm thinking: no I don't want just an artificial increase! Oh wait! This is all a game, it's all artificial! Oh what a crises, now I don't want any population mod.

Someone has a population mod that isn't artificial? :lol:

That's why I prefer Sims worlds really. They might be small but at least they're not fudging anything. I like to see real numbers in my games, not representations. Banished does this quite well too. It's deliberately small and about a small community so they don't have to pretend it's big. I'd have liked SimsVille.

Yeah, it's a real shame SimsVille got canned. On the plus side, I loaded up my old SimCity 4 saves, in which all the cities' growth stagnated for some reason, and the capital's population shot up by like 30K in an hour of playing. SC4 doesn't simulate anyone at all in the way that both TS3 and Skylines do, but it still feels pretty real. But I'd take fake numbers over the alternative any day, because usually simulating large amounts of people is very harsh on the CPU. TS3 is a bitch to run and so is Skylines.

But as I said, I like "fake" numbers, so in my TS3 I just placed hundreds of beds, fridges and cribs in the inaccessible spaces of the highrise buildings, since MasterController has a neat little function that shows the total amount of said objects in the town. It just feels right to have 500 beds in a town, even though there are barely 100 playable Sims. As for the total amount of NPCs, it'd probably be well over 500.

If you have all the expansion packs with NPC's and townies, probably a lot at least. I was running Skylines last night my graphics card had to work hard, I could hear it. I wonder what change my new self build will do.
