The students hurried out of their classrooms, eager to be free of teachers and learning and instead focus on more interesting matters-- lunch and gossip! But today, the gossip had a frenzied, frantic, mean-spirited jeering quality to it, to such a degree that Ophelia, who typically held herself aloof of such foolishness, eavesdropped on the conversations as they traveled across the room.

“Oh my God, he just flew out of his desk at her. Wonder what she said to p*ss him off.”

“Oh man, knowing her, she said some snotty, brainy thing. Remember that speech?”

“Who could forget it? ‘The average woman is closer to a size twelve than a size six.’ What a load of bullsh*t!”

Here, Ophelia froze for a second, realizing who the topic of conversation was.

“What happened to Emily?” she demanded.

The conversation at the table came to a screeching halt. Everyone paused, glanced at each other, and snickered, albeit a bit awkwardly.

“Didn’t you hear?” one girl finally asked. “LB Rivers beat up Emily Desjardin in class! I always knew this would happen. In fact, I was hoping it would happen.”

“She deserved it,” a braver girl added. “So stuck up because of her grades and being on that news show. Thinks she’s too good to talk to us mere mortals.”

Ophelia clenched her hands into fists, furious. Ooh, if I could get my hands on LB right now! she thought. She hurried away before she could do any damage to the snobs.
