Gideon sighed and sat on the sofa. Sheridon joined him, a concerned look on his face.

“What a day!” Gideon complained. “It took over two hours to shoot one short scene. That imbecile, Rayna Loup… it’s like trying to work with a squirrel. The squirrel would have more brains, though.” Gideon stopped in this middle of his complaint and looked closely at Sheridon. It wasn’t like him to look so worried and so unhappy. “Hey, what’s up?” Gideon asked, more gently.

Sheridon looked over at him and replied flatly, “They rejected us.”

“They what? Why?”

“You know why. Because we’re two guys.”

“They actually said that?”

“Yeah.”

“Wow. So, back to the drawing board, then? Maybe we don’t really need a kid…”

Sheridon’s eyes widened. “No, we are not giving up,” he responded firmly. “You want a kid just as bad as I want one. There’s other options, other routes.”

“Like what?”

“Donors, stuff along those lines.”

Gideon shook his head. “No, I don’t want our kid to have half of some stranger’s DNA.”

Sheridon sighed and remarked, “It’s just not right. I mean, if I was a woman, you could just get me knocked up, no problem. Or they’d let us adopt. And instead…”

“Life isn’t fair sometimes, sweetie.”

“Yeah, I know, but it sure does hurt.”

Tacita stepped through the doorway, smiling broadly. “Surprise!” she called out. She held her arms out, expecting her daughter to race over and embrace her. Instead, Lisa remained seated beside Ophelia and gave Tacita a look that was unmistakably distrustful and unhappy.

“Sweetheart, it’s me,” Tacita continued.

Lisa frowned and replied, “So? You’ve been gone for months, and now you want me to act like nothing’s wrong?”

“Honey, I’ve been busy. You know that,” Tacita responded, the smile fading from her face.

“You never have time for me. Why should I try to have time for you?”

“Lisa, I’m your mother--”

“Some mother you are!” the child cried out. “Miss Lia and Miss C are more like moms to me!”

With that said, Lisa stormed out. Tacita stared incredulously after her, then looked over at Ophelia.

“What are you looking at me for?” Ophelia asked. “She’s your daughter.”

“You’re the one raising her,” Tacita responded.

“I never told her to act that way. Personally, though, I don’t blame her for how she reacted. You really haven’t been there for her all that much. Even when you weren’t touring, you hardly saw her.”

“So, you’re calling me a bad parent?”

“More like an absentee parent.”

Tacita let out an irritated huff. “Well, that’s a pretty crappy thing to say.”

Ophelia raised an eyebrow. “Remember,” she said, “Cy and I have been the ones raising Lisa, not you. Not once did we ever ask you to pay us for the groceries or doctor’s bills. We’ve treated your child as our own when you were too busy getting plastered with whatever flash in the pan flavor of the week that caught your eye.”

The two women glared at each other, each ready for the other to attack. Finally, Tacita squared her shoulder and snapped, “I don’t have to take this. I’m leaving.”

“Just walking out of your kid’s life again? Tacita, look, you know Cy and I will be happy to adopt her; the offer still--”

“Oh, go to hell. You and Cy both.”

Ophelia grabbed Tacita’s arm and dragged her to the front door. “That’s it!” she yelled. “Get the hell out of my house now!”

“Your house? I thought it was your uncle’s house, and you’re more or less renting it from him.”

“Out!” Ophelia demanded, yanking open the door and shoving Tacita out. “Come back when you’re ready to actually be a parent!” With that said, she slammed the door shut.
