View Full Version : Threads opening at the bottom

Recently noticed that whenever I look at a download thread it always opens scrolled all the way to the bottom.

Cheers

They usually do for me anyway, because of HOW I get there, but I`ve noticed occasionally over the past week or so that SOMEtimes when I go from one page to the next or previous, it will open at the bottom instead of the top. I *think* that this is restricted to Downloads threads, but I could be mistaken, as it hasn`t happened to me TODAY.

They have done that for me too recently, I was actually just coming here to mention it.

For me, they open in the middle of some random comment. It's not a huge deal to have to scroll up, but it is rather annoying.

"...in the middle of some random comment" is probably the site`s feeble attempt to present you with the first unread post in the thread, unless you really *mean* in the *middle* of the comment, instead of at the *top* of it...?

I really mean in the middle of the comment rather than the top of it. Here's a screenshot, I didn't adjust the page at all, I just let it load and it snapped down there when it was finished.

Thats not the middle of a comment. :) Due to the way Firefox handles scroll events in javascript, it will scroll so the bottom of the window shows the part you want to see (hence why there is the start of the blue bar for the actual comment). In IE, however, the scroll event moves it so the top of the window shows the part you want to see - which means that it shows you the full comment and not just the top bar.

The current behaviour is probably due to a fix I made to try and fix it not scrolling down... ;) But essentially it will try and scroll you to the latest unread comment.

I'll add it to my list.

Actually, just thinking about this - opening a normal download thread doesn't show you the comments right away, so the browser isn't going to scroll. (At least, it doesn't here....) And switching tabs doesn't make it auto-scroll to the latest unread comment, unless you dont have "Always Load Comments" turned on.

So... how are you replicating this issue?

So... how are you replicating this issue?I just click on my name which takes me to the page with all my downloads on it and click on one of them. It takes me to the Overview tab - at the bottom. It doesn't switch to the comments or anything, just scrolls the front page to the bottom.

Try this one as an example - it does the same however I get to the page.

I just tested that in FF 3.5.4 and it stayed at the top, and also doesn't scroll down on my threads. Which browser are you using?

The usual one that breaks IE (IE7 specifically)

I`m using IE7, too, and following the link that MogHughson gave indeed takes me to the BOTTOM of the Overview page. FWIW, I have Always Load Comments turned ON.

In my case, I`m replicating the issue by hitting the Next Page button at the bottom of threads. The next page comes up with the thread positioned at the bottom instead of at the top. Sometimes. Any given thread seems --as far as I can tell, being interested in so many threads [I currently have 1361 threads subscribed to in my main subscription page]-- to be consistant one way or the other for as long as I`ve been able to track it, usually the duration of catching up on Monday with a thread that`s been busy over the weekend. I haven`t tried tracking any given thread for longer than that at a time. It DOES seem to be limited to Download threads, though.

Something else which may be related - when you click on the "Go To Last Post" button for a download thread, it stays at the top - maybe something has got up-side down?

More likely it's just not on the right tab or hasn't triggered the javascript function or what not. I'll add it to my list. :)

I`ve already posted a thread about that. Last I looked, it had two posts in it, both by me. :| At least I know you`re looking into it. "&goto=newpost" and "&goto=lastpost" are both failing. :(

It does this with both topics and downloads I've already viewed. Very frustrating, since it picks a random comment on every page to go to, instead of at LEAST going to the last one on the page. Would be nice if it just stayed at the top. :\

For me, Claeric, it DOES stay at the top when it should be scrolling to the newest posts. On the other hand, when I click on <Prev or Next>, it [still] goes to the BOTTOM of the page, when it should stay at the TOP. :| At least the thread that MogHughson linked to opens at the top for me now.

On the other hand, when I post a Quick Reply, it seems to scroll the page so that my new message ends near the bottom of the screen. :wtf:

...at least Edit Message seems to be scrolling to the right part of the page for me. So far. As does Quick Edit. ::fingers_crossed::
