Hmph, I'm probably not the perfect guy to give you advice on this, as my houses tended to be simple and practical! And landscaping is my weak point.

But the house looks good to me. I think the candelabra-style wall lights don't match the style very well, though. I think you should replace it with something else. Maybe add dormers or something to the roof if you think it's too plain. Or a chimney!

The landscape do look a rather bare. How about using terrain paints to, well, paint the terrain a little bit so it's not so monotone green. Maybe add some sandy areas here and there. Use shrubs around the palm trees. Look at how EA do it in Sunset Valley for inspiration. The straight edge on the triangular pond looks unnatural to me.

The gatehouse looks amazing and authentic, Sandymh! I'm still amazed at what people can do with landscaping....

The new entries that have been entered so far looks incredible as well, most with gorgeous landscaping. The bar keeps getting raised...

@Kaospilot, if I'm not mistaken that weird thing is ceiling that got scrunched downward, right? That got left behind even as you have removed the ceiling and the floor tile associated with it?

Thanks for the advise :) .There are shrubs there,just like in the beach but its invisible because the tree detail is low :( .I'll remove the lights and spice up the terrain a bit,thanks :anime: .

Yea. Sometimes if you delete the tiles in question and "move" the house in the neighbourhood, it gets removed. I guess it's a sort of a reset or something.

Didn't manage now though so tore down the house and rebuilt it :P

@gabrielorie yes I used CFE to get the slight arch in the 'gateway' and had to put a frieze height floor above it to get it to stay in place. If that sounds easy then try getting stairs in place lol. Obviously had to use CFE on the ruins which was less annoying! This contest has really helped me get practise with these techniques I'd avoided before. My first house was sooo plain compared. I've seen the utube tutorials on bridges, attached garage and split level stairs but other than that nothing beats just playing around with it.
Love your house only comment I'd make is what about some more 'front door' type exterior doors on your house? Love the lounge colour scheme.
@heavensent_8_18 Please Please Please (etc etc) upload the treehouse!!!!
Definitely going to have to make that world with all 30x30 lots :-)

BGatot
8th Aug 2010, 12:25 PM
I too rarely use CFE previously mainly because of the possiblility of 'unexpected' thingy happening! :D But having to rebuilt it? That's pretty bad! :blink:

Sandymh, Yeah, a frieze floor in between levels (and basement below foundation) makes putting stairs difficult. Uses too much space. Especially in such a small foundation! I'd be curious to see the interior of your gatehouse, especially the stairs! And I hate how the area in the frieze is unlighted. In fact I hate how in Sims 3 lights are calculated per level, and did not bleed into subsequent level as they should be.

Oh one other annoying thing that could happen while building is if you use paint the ceiling thing, sometimes when you use shift click to paint large areas automatically, it extends outside to where your ceiling is not. Sort of bleed out a little, usually one tiles out from the wall. Usually escaped notice (because ceiling paint is invisible from above) until it's time to take pictures! The only way to remove it that I know of is to put floor tiles back in the area affected (may be difficult if there's no support below it) and then delete them. I think it's probably related to the bug Kaospilot is having. Come to think about it, Kaospilot, maybe next time you could try puting floor tiles in the level above where your anomalities are, then delete them? Sorry I didn't come up with this until you've rebuilt your house.

And while at it, why does painting ceilings have to be this hard!? It's difficult to get the camera to point up! It's always seem to want to snap back down. Sims 3 isn't a fighting game, but some of my most furious fighting in a game lately is fighting the interface in Sims 3! :(

Whoops, too much ranting? :blink: :rofl:

Ive
8th Aug 2010, 12:35 PM
Haha, the woes of painting ceilings! When the bug happens, it's because I am trying to colour the ceiling and it sort of like.. breaks and goes all pointy and weird and that's when the white bits stick out. I also notice when trying to paint ceilings that just normal floor tiles sometimes don't register as a "proper" floor. So when I try to take pictures you can see straight up into the floor above, right into objects etc where there clearly are tiles :blink: So then I just have to remove it and replace it with roof tiles and repaint over it. The roof painting ability is sooooo extremely bugged in some areas.

BGatot
8th Aug 2010, 12:46 PM
Heh, well, Michelangelo supposedly nearly went blind painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Maybe that's why EA made painting ceiling in Sims 3 so difficult? Except we don't go nearly blind, we went near crazy instead! :D

Anyway, this is what I've come up with so far...

@BGatot - fortunately I had a split staircase so it now just has 3 half size sections which isn't too bad and will do for the contest but were I to expand and upload this lot I'd definately have to redo them as certainly too buggy with more than 1 sim in the house - too many tantrums!!! Totally agree about the lighting I sometimes make rooms taller by adding a small layer on top and the lighting issue is a real pain. I find curves the hardest as you lose the grid marking on the top and can't manipulate them at all which is darn awkward.

BGatot: So cute your house it. Especially with that "tower". Just one thing.. It seems a bit straight in the front. Maybe try putting some sort of roof just over where the door is for example. To break it up :)

BGatot
8th Aug 2010, 1:38 PM
Thanks for the suggestions! I will try to implement it.

Kaospilot, I know, it's kind of plain isn't it? I tried adding that rounded awning thingy, but with that door, the top of it sticks out above the awning. Maybe I'll just switch to another door and see what happens.

Gabrielorie, yes I have ambitions. Is the water really any different? I did use a couple of fish spawners and the fog emitter to add a fountain there though! :) First time I used the thing.

Liked your house BTW. It's fresh, neat, airy, just like a beach house should be! And the landscaping is very nice now.

@BGatot- just the same stupid issue we've all had at some point - the unrecolourable chimney. Would look better not in red brick but then from experience I don't know if the hand built ones look quite right either so... Otherwise it's looking great - I love the exterior colours and woodwork and the old fashioned car!

BGatot
8th Aug 2010, 3:53 PM
Sandymdh, I know. That red chimney is really looking out of place. I thought about covering it with walls, but there needs to be a foundation below it so it won't 'hang' above ground. And adding foundation is a no-no! :( Maybe I should just get rid of it altogether...

@BGatot - not sure if it would work but you could make a wall to cover the bottom - CFE it to be level with the foundation next to it then build more wall on top if you get what I mean - then I guess technically you haven't built any more foundation? It's a dilemna isn't it as that type of house really should have a fireplace- damn you EA! lol

Ive

gabrielorie: Your colours are so refreshing :)
BGatot: Maybe move the fireplace one tile in? That way you only have to build the replacement chimney inside, though only the top will be showing sticking out of the roof.

BTW I've update my house again. I've managed to cover the chimneys with walls and matching color scheme. Definitely looks better IMHO. Managed to hide the top of the chimney pretty well too! :D

Of course when I first did it I made the mistake of creating several levels of walls before leveling it, and end up with strange leftover scrunched-up ceilings even though all the levels associated with it have been leveled. Had to bulldoze the lot and placed a copy of the house and start over.

I saw what you did and I really like it, BGatot. However, the fence on top of the chimney feels really out of place. It's too blocky and fancy for the feeling you're going, at least in my opinion. I'd suggest something that'd fit more with your theme.

Haha. Yea I've been trying with rain but it ends up like 2 lots away in the neighbourhood :lol:
I had the same thing when I tried using rain but then I think I figured out the problem. I could be wrong but it seemed to me that it doesn't matter where you place the fog emitter because the rain appears just in front of wherever your camera happens to be. Maybe it was just coincidence in my case but I managed to get rain for my R2 pics working to this logic :)

Also, I had the same issue with random floor/ceiling tiles appearing in odd places when I was making R3 house (I used a lot of CFE :lol: )...it's part of the reason I took so long completing it. I didn't find a permanent fix for it but I found a temporary fix that enabled me to take pics: I couldn't delete those tiles so I just leveled them out and when I went back into live mode they dissapeared. Unfortunately after a while in build they would come back but I don't know which tiles were the original borked ones :rolleyes: I probably won't upload that house because of it :rolleyes:

If you want to I recommend you just delete each piece of tiles that you have painted under (like all of 2nd floors tiles with furniture and all, after all youre not saving!) Elimination process :D I found out that mine was because of a piece of roof, under the foundation tiles, what the..

Thanks for the advice guys! It is much appreciated. I'll try some other fence for the top of the chimney.

Heavensent, as far as I know, once you move the lot to a bigger one it is permanent, unless you have a copy in your residential section of edit town. Unfortunate, I know! There should be a way to move a house to smaller lots if it fits. I'm hoping someone out there knows the trick to do it.

I finally finished my house and moved a few sims in to take the pictures and now all ceilings are black and distorted! Not simple black, but like a black void, no texture at all. Deleted all ceilings and roofs, redid the whole thing and...again lost ceiling textures! It looks fine in buildmode, but in lifemode it's all messed up! :cry:

Gonna take a break now before I decide to use the hammer of destruction on the whole house... :(

edit: no CFE used insde the house, only in the garden so that can't be the cause...I think.

Fyendiar is there any way you could post a pic of the messed up ceiling to give us an idea what it's doing? Also I know you deleted the ceilings and roofs but have you tried adding and deleting a layer of floor on the level above the weird ceiling, or is that what you meant by deleting the ceiling?

I did had a similar problem with the terrain paint, one time a few of the dirt ones only showed up as asphalt, but that seemed to fix itself or at least I can't remember what I did besides loading into a different lot to check it and exiting / restarting the game.

armiel

Might be something else, but before you reinstall and stuff, try taking the photos by being in the active floor. By this I mean, If you want to take a picture of the first floor, you need to actually be on it, with that floor being the selected one. If you put the house all floors and roofs up you get black ceilings. In other words, there cannot be a floor active above the one you wanna take photos of.

Very confusing I guess, but I can't explain it better.

We all know the story of Hansel and Gretel, but did you know this part?

When the children found the little cottage in the wood it wasn't made of food and there lived a nice old lady. She gave Hansel and Gretel a friendly welcome and walked outside to get some food from her garden to feed the starving children. As she walked out Hansel noticed the huge fireplace in the kitchen and couldn't resist setting a fire. However as with many grownup things done by children it went horribly wrong!
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2265/69837931.jpg

The hunter, a good friend of the nice old lady happened by and ran in to put out the blazing fire!

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9098/18516118.jpg

However when he came in he saw that the poor old woman had tried to put out the fire herself, but Gretel tripped her as she came in!
The hunter didn't think twice and started spraying her with water.
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7356/91774691.jpg

And this is the moment the nice old lady became the nasty old hag. At this very moment she decided the children's faith we have been taught all these years...

The new door looks good! As much for its glass area than the fact that it's a double door. Maybe you could try that door in the upper deck as well and see if it's better?

Not sure about the curtains though. I think you should keep the one in the bedroom and lose the one in the living room. Or maybe another style of curtains? I know EA's selection is sooooo limited! I can think of a few CC curtains that would be perfect! :D

Some of the different curtain styles mix together very well on one window. I know your computer was busted Gabrielorie, but when you start playing again, maybe that's something you can play around with. I mixed two different curtains in my bedroom pic on the round 4 entry. If you look closely I bet you can figure out which ones. Some of the longer curtains go well together and you can have more colors/patterns in your curtain design.

Very cool & neat modern house, Ciane, but the really cool thing is that it looks so different from many other people's houses (and especially mine, of course!) it is hard to believe that they share the exact same foundation! I had to take a closer look at the layout to be sure! :D

To all contestants - great entries! I love all of them for one reason or other - glad I'm not a judge, it would be too hard to pick one over the other!
Here is my final round non-entry for your enjoyment.
In the near future, the world overpopulation will threaten to cause famine and suffering, for the planetary resources will not be able to keep up with demand. Thankfully, the World Space Agency will have a solution. Volunteers will be able to take a colony ship into outer space and settle new planets with untouched resources. One such ship will be the SS Jade Empress - with 3000 settlers from all Asia, including Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Shang Simla, Laos and one extended family of Nepalese Sherpas. These brave settlers will be delivered to the solar system of the star Thuban, in the constellation Draco, where there is an Earth-SIMilar planet, Simtopia, awaiting them. The Earth ship is scheduled to return with more supplies and settlers after one year.
Next year - no ship yet, but the settlers have planted many Earth plants, which are thriving in the rich Simtopian soil. One plant, the flame fruit, has however led to an amazing discovery. Simtopia is inhabited - by highly intelligent dragons, who have acquired a taste for flame fruits and apples. The settlers and dragons eventually come to a mutually beneficial agreement and things progress wonderfully and peacefully for the next thousand years.
Still no Earth ship! But let's take a look at one settler in particular. Arella Cho is a brand new dragon priestess, recently assigned to the southernmost Dragon Temple on Key Wakan. She will maintain the temple for all dragon pilgrims, provide medicinal and nutritional support as needed, and enjoy the use of the Temple Lodging, a small but sturdy dwelling built of fire-proof volcanic basalt.
Welcome to the Dragon Temple Lodging on Key Wakan!
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/StreetviewR4.jpg
The lodging is built right up to the mouth of the Temple Mountain Cave. Note the Draco Terranadonidae on his way into the cave! Two pools at the base of the mountain are home to dragonfish, who enjoy the fiery outpourings of the mountain volcano.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/R4Gardenside.jpg
Here's the view from the side garden, so you get the full Dragon Mountain effect! This would be Bonus Pic 1.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/R4firstflr.jpg
The first floor of the Lodge contains the living room, small dinette, bathroom and kitchen. The deck leads to the street, back garden and temple cave, and provides Ariella with an easel and telescope for skill-building.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/R4Secondflr.jpg
The second floor holds the loft bedroom and an exercise area with treadmill, so Ariella can stay fit for her sometimes strenuous job. Two large windows provide ample views of approaching dragons.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/LivingR4.jpg
Ariella enjoys reading in the living area. She also has a desk with communications unit to keep in touch with her colleagues and the High Priestess.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/KitchenR4.jpg
This sunny and bright kitchen makes food preparation easy and relaxing!

A view of loft bedroom. Warm colors help our intrepid priestess relax at night.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/CavesideR4.jpg

http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Dragon%20Temple%20-%20R4/ZengardenR4.jpg
A small zen garden provides a lovely spot to sit and watch the stars. Perhaps one day a ship may appear. Note the Draco Carnivorensis helping herself to some flame fruit.
The two "dragon" visitors and the rideable dragon "automobile" are CC from this site. The dragon cave, dragon topiaries, dragonfish spawners and fruit and veggie spawners are available in-game in buydebug (WA needed for cave and dragonfish, Ambitions for topiaries). The roof deco is from buy mode - decor and I think came with the base game. The terrainpaint is by Simmiller. I tried to use non-CC textures, but sometimes it is hard to tell. If I used YOUR texture, thank you for sharing it! Key Wakan is actually Armiel's Builder's Island - I love building here, it is fast-loading and unencumbered with extra buildings!
Hope you enjoy! And good luck everyone in this final round!

Thank you gabrielorie! I know the texture on that section of foundation is not "suitable", it's only there to indicate the flaming terrain that is contacting it. The house will never be uploaded, so I thought I could get away with that little joke for the chatters.

I think I'll turn in for tonight, but first I want to thank Hysterical Paroxysm, the judges and all the creators for widening my horizons. After looking over the first round entries and seeing the incredible variety of building styles suitable for the same foundation, I took a look at my own building. Since my Sims continuously have route failures, I had taken to building large roomy homes for them. Mostly in the Southwestern style to boot. After some gameplay I'd get bored and start a new batch of Sims with a new house (I love building!). This contest has made me try new sizes of lots and building styles. Right now I have a modern mansion, a hacienda and will next try the grungy look again, so I can play around with CFE. The modern mansion, I realize is just TOO BIG, since I don't have any ideas for the rest of the space. It has to go and I have to try again in a more manageable size. The point is you have all made me reassess how and what I build. Everyone of you has put the fun and creativity back into Sim-building. Thank you!

Kaylarox, type "testingcheatsenabled true" then "buydebug" and then in buymode you will have a new category marked with a questionmark. In that category you can find the dragoncave among many other neat stuff they felt the need to hide from us. :)

Fyendiar
11th Aug 2010, 5:50 AM
Oh btw do not forget to type "buydebug off" again before you go back to life mode since it also shows other hidden stuff like insect spawners and such that you don't want to see while playing. If you have them all shown and "buydebug off" does not work, type "buydebug" again first and then "buydebug off" (both in buy or build mode).

I sometimes forget to do that and yesterday I saw those spawners all over the city, the only way to get rid of them was to type the mentioned cheats in the edit town's overview. Weirdness like the CFE bugs that wouldn't happen if they just made them features instead of cheats...or maybe that is the reason they made them cheats to begin with; saves them time not having to fix those bugs. :)

It's this we are talking about right? http://a.imageshack.us/img706/600/birdpattern.jpg Unless I'm very blind. I hope it's not :lol: Been beating myself up not being able to use that sooooo many places in my houses. It just looks very non EA ish :giggler: Yes, that's the pattern I used for my r3 house. I guess it's from base game or first add-on.

@Greenlea: I love the interior - especially the bedroom - the colours are very nice. Green is one of my favourite colours. I like the way you give every room its own special look. :up:

@sandymdh: Wow, a little castle. Great idea - I like the mix of ruined parts and nicely planted garden. Looks like "someone" is trying to restore the old castle. (I also like the pictures of Norfolk Gatehouses you posted earlier!)

Holy-simoly! I was taking pictures of my lot and the sims were burning up some hotdogs and the dogs caught on fire and the next thing you know, the SIMS were on FIRE! YIKES! Exit without saving!I call that an "extended bbq session"... :lol:

@Gabrielorie: The livingroom looks very cozy. I love the colours of all the rooms and the landscaping looks much better than in your first post for this round! It's okay not to use so many plants but terrain paints make the lot look more real and less "bare".

@BGatot: This is such a lovely little cottage and a place I certainly would love to live in. The new chimney fits perfectly in - I'm glad you found such a good solution for the ugly red-ish ea chimney. Your house is definately something I'd love to download after the contest is over. :up:

@Fyendiar: Oh, wow, your lot it amazing. Hensel and Gretel... what a nice idea to build a house "around" this story. Very clever. Great entry! :up:

@Ciane: I love the interior and the colours used throughout the house. Well done. :)

@Gamineannie: Wow, I like your pictures - is that a lava-like terrain paint? Looks great.

@TheNubbyPeanut: I like the shape of your house and the colours you used for it - the landscaping is great. I love the outdoor grill area - would love to spend summer there and have lots of bbqs...

@all: This weekend I'll make myself a huuuuuuge cup of hot chocolate (or iced & cold chocolate - depending on the weather), take the laptop and have a look at all (!) entries for round 1-4 again. I already pushed the agree/love buttons every now and then but this weekend I'll make sure that I didn't forget to look at everyone's entries.
This contest is so much fun and I very much enjoy to have a look at all those lovely and creative houses - I wish there was a foundation contest every year at MTS. Wouldn't that be great to have a special foundation contest every year in summer?
Anyway, I got my house finished two days ago, did most of the landscaping yesterday, hope to get the rest of the landscaping finished today so that I can take a few pictures and upload them here asap.

Must go to work now.... :cry:

I think it might be in buydebug. You know how to get it to show up, don't you? 'testingcheatsenabled true' then 'buydebug'. If not, maybe it is in the community lot category in build mode, you know, where you can find all the rabbitholes and community objects and stuff.

I just wanted to say thanks for the nice comments; not just for my effort, but for all the entries. It is interesting to see what aspects people like. I really like the warm brick and wood qualities most for interior decorating because they make one feel comfortable and cozy there, but I also enjoy the cool modern and steel combinations with a very minimalistic look that are awe inspiring. I like to look at the variations in the actual shape of the homes most and the layout choices.

I do think next time I build a house I'll use that look for the bedroom though cause I liked it so much.Yeah, I loved it too.

@Gabrielorie: BGatot is right, there's an "Old Boat" in buydebug -> "misc. objects", however, in my game it's not marked as a WA objects it rather looks like it's an Ambitions object. :wtf: Very strange....
PS: I'll keep my fingers crossed for your r4 entry that the score for landscaping will be higher than 5 (should be, imo).

@sandymdh: lol, yes, fingers crossed for the +70. I love that castle but I'm not a judge.

I could imagine to do a new foundation contest next year in summer - if there won't be another official MTS one AND if some others are willing to help judging (not only because it's too much work for one person alone but also because I'm ... :turtle: very slow.. ;) )

Also, I'm very forgetful - there's a good chance that I'll forget about all that until next year... :blink:

Please remind me then. :D

@Gabrielorie
I like what you did to the place, it has a nice soft tone to it and the same feel throughout the house. The fact that you added some curtains truly makes a big difference to the overall looks of the place.
I would however make one change though and that is in regards to the driveway or lack of it. The cars have a parking place nicely paved, but they have to ride through the sand to get there which doesn't make much sense. I would either make the parking place also covered in zand with perhaps a soft darker tone to imply it's been rode on often or add some pavement between the parking spot and the road.

I wonder if anyone else is already getting withdrawal symptoms for the contest? I hope another one gets set up soon because I feel like all my spare moments for the past 4 weeks have been thinking up ideas for the foundation... or building... or (most of all) tweaking the design and now suddenly its all over and I'm like...ermm...what to do now?
While I have this box open I'd like to thank HP and all the judges for arranging this contest, all the contestants for their hard work and cameraderie..and say that it really has been a huge learning experience for me. Another of EA's 'improvement' eh? Sometimes I wonder what's going on at the developer's office. They seem to never gets their act together 100%. Every patch, updates and expansion packs they always add cool things, fixes what's wrong, and screw up something else altogether. Same thing with Sims 2, but as I understand it Sims 3 has a different developer. Maybe the directive or the 'screw up culture' comes from EA itself? :wtf:

@Vampire Aninyosaloh: so that's the real life issue you've been having. That's awful! I am so glad your best friend is found though, so many of these missing persons are never seen again. I wonder where they went or what happened. I guess the world's a big place, and unfortunately it is easy for people to disappear forever (whether through their own will or otherwise). :(

It looks lovely, MissPsy. Reminds me of beach huts on the seafront ( very english thing- not sure where you are from so it might not mean anything to you!). I love the colour mix and the real open air and summery feel it has to it. Good luck!

Thanks so much Mia. I'm from Oregon, close enough to the coast that I know what you mean. That's something I hadn't thought of before you mentioned it. Thanks again.

This is my entry for the (non-official) foundation contest (for the slow-builders among us who didn't manage to enter the first round in time :turtle: ) - however, it's fun to build with these pre-made foundations anyway and maybe you'd like to see what I have come up with. Here's my idea for #4 foundation:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"St. Simeon Chapel of Bliss"
This old little chapel was build a loooong time ago. After the big fire, back in the 19th centuary, the residents of Twinbrook tried to rebuild the old chapel as is used to be but only a few decades later there was another (smaller) fire and after that the little chapel has been unoccupied and out of service for many years.
In 1979 a young athlete named Joey Brown moved into the private chambers of St. Simeon and started to restore the building. Over time the people of Twinbrook began helping him to give St. Simeon a new look. It took them a few months to make this place livable again.
The young man appreciated the help of the residents and since there was no other place for church services in Twinbrooks he invited the people to visit him every sunday to worship God.
Joey Brown gave up his career as an athlete and became Twinbrook's contact point for people in need and for everybody who wanted to talk. Soon they called him "Father Brown" (inofficial and unconfirmed by the Vatikan, of course) and Joey Brown silently accepted his new role in life and has ever been happy with his new life since then.
30 x 30 lot / Foundation 4
No CC but store items were used to build this
The Floorplans:
Groundfloor
The left door behind the entrance leads to the confessional of St. Simeon.
Pater Brown has his own entrance to this area at the farest end of the sanctuary.
The sanctuary is a very small and simple room. It gives room to ten attender at church.
http://a.imageshack.us/img409/8179/02groundfloor.jpg
1st Floor
In the first floor there's the gallery where Pater Brown is having choir practice twice a week with some people from town.
For visitors and attender at church there are also public toilets in the first floor.
http://a.imageshack.us/img261/5803/03firstfloor.jpg
2nd Floor
Pater Brown's private rooms are located in the second floor. The workspace is right behind the stairs and connected with the small kitchen and livingroom. His livingroom is nothing but a small table and two comfortable chairs at the farest end of the kitchen but Pater Brown is happy with his little living space. He loves to sit here while reading a good book or just to have a cup of tea while watching the sunset through the windows.
The door behind the workspace is leading to his small but cozy bedroom where he's holding his greatest treasures of his younger days when he was a successful athlete. Only a few steps away there's a door leading to his bathroom. Pater Brown is not very happy with the modern look of it, however, he got the interior donated from the residents of Twinbrook. "You can't say no to a gift, can you?" is what he usually tells his friends when they come for a visit.
http://a.imageshack.us/img822/8154/07living.jpg
http://a.imageshack.us/img261/3093/08bath.jpg
At the reverse side of St. Simeon there's also an old little graveyard. "Pater" Brown loves to spend endless hours here with gardening and taking care of the old graves. He has never known any of the people who are buried there, however, he talks to them every day and brings them new flowers and candles.
http://a.imageshack.us/img844/8949/09graveyard.jpg
Today "Pater" Brown is an old man but he still lives in St. Simeon Chapel of Bliss and keeps everything in shape. :)
Kayla, stop putting yourself down, your house is really cute and does not deserve to be called a dud!! :wtf: I love your bathroom especially. The layout of your top floor is unusuall but I like it. It's like they're saying sleep is the least of their priorities, they prefer to spoil themselves with luxurious bubble baths etc. :lol: Also, was it you who just taught yourself to do split stairs? If so, you did a good job :)
Cloudburst, I like your slopey awning thing...might have to steal that idea later down the line ;)
Yogi Tea (For some reason I keep thinking you're called PG Tips, must be the reference to tea and the big pointy tips of your ears ;) ) I hunted all over the build catalogue for that wall covering you used in your bathroom when I did my oceanic themed house but just could not find it. I convinced myself that I imagined it or that it must've been in the downloads folder I removed for the contest....where the hell did you find it?
I've loved being part of this contest but I'm also soooo glad it's over, now I can get my life back :lol: between my mother in law visiting for a week, a baby to look after and trying to get entries in on time I've pretty much left myself with no free time all month :rolleyes: I haven't even been commenting much lately 'cause I haven't had the time to procrastinate like I normally do (darn my slow work rate!! :lol: ) but I'll try to go back and make all the comments I wanted to make tomorrow. Now it's almost 3 am and I really should attempt to sleep.
Yogi-tea I love that chapel, very nice work. Come to think of it I am surprised not more people made a chapel out of it. The first thing I thought was church, and second church and third church and then I thought I'd better not make a church since most likely everyone will... turns out either most decided not to for the same reason or not as many as I thought had that idea. I think Feldynn even made a comment about it looking like a church, sorry too lazy to check atm. Anyway like I said: very nice work! :)
Missroxor I agree with you about that comment at Cloudburst, that "slopey awning thing" as you put it is definately a steal-worthy idea (nice work Cloudburst!). I just looked over your inn and I love the detail of the texturing of the outside house, the way you took the picture of the inn part of the...ehm...inn, very nice looking waterfall and I am definately gonna steal that idea for the barn doors some day! Your entry is sure to get a high score!
Kaylarox Very nice idea with the butterflies, where did you find those outfits?
I got a builder's block too, I've been worried about getting one since round 1, so I'm just glad I managed to do them all.
I found a half built house that I never finished because I forgot where it was, and I was too stuck to do anything with it. I didn't even want to think about an empty lot to start from scratch on. I had to go back to playing with my empty gardens and houses with no more interior than their bare necessities and a only few decorative items.
kaylarox: Thank you for the compliment but I agree with missroxor. Your house is a cute and homey little faerie home and I especially love the garden with the little pond around the house. Very lovely.
(ps: "lime green and hot pink"? :giggler: )
(For some reason I keep thinking you're called PG Tips, must be the reference to tea and the big pointy tips of your ears ) :lol: Yogi-Tea is my nick from "old" times in which I used to be an active Star Wars fan - my avatar still looks a bit like it (sort of yoda-like creature, only bigger).
As for the wall covering in the bathroom - the "Wall with Water Element Etchings" can be found in build mode -> wall coverings -> siding (it's in the middle of the second row). It can easily be missed since it's in grey and doesn't stand out to the other wall siding.
feldynn: Thank you - I'm glad no one can see me blush now. It took me a whole day to think about what to build and another day to decide how to build it and to get started. I wasn't sure if I could finish it in time.
Fyendiar: It's strange but I found this small and simple foundation very difficult. At the end I had only one idea for this round. I haven't had the time yet to look at all other entries but if this was the only church in this round I'd really be surprised.
Greenlea: You must be very desperate. :rofl:
You may play around with the foundation I attached to this post. Have fun! :D
Lethe_s: It's because I'm ssssslow... :turtle:
But never mind, I learned alot during this contest even without officially participating. This contest was great fun - not only because of building things that I never had thought of but especially because of all the fantastic creations other people came up with.
@all: I hope you all are going to upload your houses to MTS. Please do so - I'd love to have them in my game. We'd actually need a complete new world for all these houses - with only 30 x 30 lots in it. ;)
Thanks to all who commented on my lot (mostly on the contest thread) :)
The barn doors are just walls BGatot but I really can't take credit for them, I 'borrowed' the idea from a house I saw in downloads yonks ago.
Talking of taking credit, I need to thank Kwuz for pointing me in the right direction, without whom I would probably never have discovered the fog emitter ;) and thanks for trying to teach me about gifs but think I'm too much of a noob to get it :lol:
@ MissRoxxor There's definitely a Coach and Horses where I live too but our city is renowned for having an awful lot of pubs :Pint: - probably common in old pubs as goes back to the days when they were used as inns and had stables etc too. I went to Uni in Leeds so have visited Otley too a few times lol - pretty place. I will miss this contest but back to real life - I'm camping in Cornwall later next week with the kids :help:
Was it you who said you lived in Norwich? How weird, I based my character on my real life best friend Claire (She doesn't actually own a pub but she uses them a lot ;) ) She grew up in the village right next to Otley, Burley in Warfedale. The scenery behind the lot just reminded me of the time I visited her parents house that's why I named it after that but I didn't expect anyone else to have heard of it. Come to think of it, she went to Leeds Uni and when we met we were both living down the road from Norwich in King's Lynn....what a small world :blink:
PG Tips, er...I mean Yogi Tea, thanks for that, will have to look it up when I put the game back on (I'm taking a break,...I need it! :lol: ). I'm so annoyed that I didn't just ask around now 'cause it would've come in really handy but I'll know in the future now where to find it.
Kaospilot get off the bloody computer, you're on holiday!!! :lol: We had thunderstorms and flood warnings the other day which surprised me since I wasn't expecting it in the desert. Really, I mean, I'm from Scotland and I've never seen rain that heavy :rolleyes: Oh well, hope you're enjoying your holiday. When you come back through Victoria have a krispy kreme on me ;) (mmmmnomnomnom)
All, I was gonna go though and catch up with my comments but there's just so much that I've missed, I'd be here all day so am just gonna cop out with a well done to all and good luck for the final round. It's great to see how much people have improved since the first round (me included ;) ) and I know I for one will start putting more effort into landscaping my future uploads now that I know that creating a path and a few shrubs is not actually an impossible feat :giggler:
One last thing...I want to keep my entries links in my sig block for another week or two (advertising for when I upload them :lol: ) but also want to link to a tutorial that I'm hopefully gonna finish but my sig block is full. How do I shorten the link so it just has the name like a lot of you have? I tried just writing over the top but the link breaks when I do it.
LifesLover
missroxor, you can use Tiny URL. It will create shorter links out of your links, so you can add more. Here's a link to it:
missroxor
14th Aug 2010, 1:32 AM
Thanks both of you. I tried the tiny one first. I like that you can track how many times your link was clicked on but didn't like the fact that you have to have the http://tiny thing before your text and can't have spaces so tried Kaos' method. You do get the options under edit sig.
Well, I've learned something today, thanks :)
Since it was first suggested here (BGatot I think) thought I'd let you all know that I've done a tutorial for making aquariums with the fog emitter. Currently it's still in the editting phase (every time I read it I find a new typo or badly worded sentence :rolleyes: ). It's at the link below but hopefully once I'm finished with it it will get approved and moved to the tutorials section.
So, in the mean time, if anybody fancies proof reading and/or testing it out please have a look and let me know if any changes need to be made :)
I followed the tutorial for the aquarium last night. I have no idea what to do with it, but the little fishes are so darn cute. I was tempted last night but I quit fairly quickly. I'm just not all that creative, I guess. ^_^
I think it's wonderful how life-like the aquarium looks, considering that it doesn't even have water in it.
Oh, I can't wait to find out who won. I have a few guesses, but some people were fairly close together in terms of points for the previous rounds.
After the excitement and build up and tenseness of the past month it all feels rather flat now!
Yeah, it was so quiet, nobody was replying at all, but now it seems that people are checking back in a little more.
It does feel so weird now, not to have a house to build on a deadline or something like that. I've been trying to build now that I don't have a deadline and it just doesn't feel the same, not as exciting.
I've been thinking of a contest idea, at least for building, but I wouldn't even know how to begin, and I'm not even entirely sure that just anyone can post a contest or not.
Who knows how long it'll take for judges to come up with the round's scores. I imagine that by now they're pretty tired of having to look through all of these houses and make such difficult choices.
missroxor
Lifeslover, not just anybody can post a contest, there's criteria you have to meet. You have to either have judged a contest or participated in one...so we all meet the criteria Yay! Check out the rules, I think Beeps/boolpropped wrote a sticky in the contest forum. I think that might have been one of the reasons they decided to host a staff run contest because there were never any TS3 contests because there was hardly anybody qualified to hold one...not anyone that was still interested in contests anyway.
EDIT: I agree about the judges. I judged a couple of rounds of a contest once as an emergency judge and it was really hard going even with only about 16 contestants. Having to come up with something constructive to say about each one was particularly gruelling :lol:
Well, again, it was just merely an idea of mine, not that I'd ever actually host a contest. It'd depend on if anyone actually wanted it, and if I actually didn't feel too lazy. So I haven't done any actual checking on whether or not I could host a contest, or if anyone else could, for that matter, or even what hoops I'd have to go through in order to host a contest.
Fyendiar
15th Aug 2010, 11:48 PM
I know I am not qualified to hold or judge a contest for sure, I am way too absent minded for that to turn out well. :)
Mostly working on 10x10 houses now to see what I can do with such little space, quite a challenge all by itself tbh.
Well, apparently, from what I've read, you have to have a minimum of three judges, so it can't just be the host judging.
And there's a whole lot of other rules, too, even if you do qualify.
My daughter and I used to enter alot of Sims 2 contests on Insim. But they were more storytelling contests than actual building contests. Bear in mind that if you are the host then you set the judging criteria...if you don't want it to be about building technique then say that in your contest plan/write up thingy. You could say for example that the emphasis should be on decor or landscaping or even photography,...whatever. Or alocate different amounts of points for different categories like the judges should mark decor out of 10 but technique out of 5...if you make a contest then you make the rules ;)
Also, I've seen in contests in the past arguements over judges comments or disputes over how they were judging (ok, I admit it, it was me :lol: somebody had a go at me for saying something negative that they felt I shouldn't be judging on). I would suggest as the contest host it's important that you not only set rules for the contestant to follow but make sure the judges are all singing off the same sheet too.
I really hope one of you does do a contest (I doubt I'll have time), I'd love to see another one on here :D
Well, that is a definitely good idea. Again, I haven't done too much in depth thinking about it, and the only judging I've done is on videos over on YT, so if I decided to go for it, I'd definitely think about what I want and such. It also really depends on if anybody would want to be a contestant to my contest, if enough people would find it interesting.
I noticed at the top of the page you discussing how quiet its been. For me, I have had a burst of building ideas since this contest. I have one upload I submitted the other day, and have been working on a water park for a few days now. Running out of room to do cfe....lol. But I'm having fun.
As far as doing a contest...my daughter is in school now, so maybe. I really just lurk most of the time. I'd definitely judge if one of you did one, though.
I've been mega busy on the simming front too. First the tutorial and now I'm trying to teach myself what rustic Italian houses are supposed to look like so I can build one for CAW group ...but I'm having fun too ;)
Lifeslover I can't imagine you having problems getting interest, I mean there was only 70 people in this contest because that's when they decided they had to cap it (although they did have advertising I suppose)...but it is a lot of work so I wouldn't blame anyone for being aprehensive about doing one.
LifesLover
16th Aug 2010, 1:24 AM
Well, the reason why I'm wondering if there'd be interest is that the ideas I've got swimming in my head right now are a lot more specific than just build whatever you want on a foundation I give you and that might turn some people off. And it won't have the official site advertising like this one did, like you mentioned.
You'd be surprised. I think a lot of judges do it because they can't compete, like if they only use TS2 but like your TS3 contest. I guess the others just have a God complex :lol:
....it won't have the official site advertising like this one did, like you mentioned.
Strike while the iron's hot then. People are still checking the contest threads regularly because of the foundations contest, or ask anyone who's interesed to advertise it inc a link in their sig block.
If you're worried wbout it being too specific have a look in the TS2 contest threads. There's all sorts in there. In fact, when they first posted the foundations thread I was surprised at how unrestrictive it was, I expected to have to work to a theme or something.
It has given me reason to start meshing for TS3. So.. if I am successful.. you may see a set of Bonsai, Ikebana, stone lanterns and water features and low seating, etc. We'll see what I can manage. Ciane: Wow, you really made a liveable place out of foundation X. That's so exciting! I like your room layout and the colours, especially the kitchen. :up:
I started building on this foundation too, however, I didn't finish it yet because I was more tempted to build something on a 10x10 lot - which I did today. I'll continue with my foundation X build tomorrow and upload some pictures asap.
LifesLover: I actually made this foundation for fun and didn't even think about it's practicability, however, later I tried building on it too and now I think it's not as bad as it looks.
As for your contest I'll keep an eye on the contest page. I won't be able to judge because a) I've never participated in a contest before and b) my english isn't good enough to give detailed feedback to the contestants.
ps: You could promote your contest with a link in your signature.
It's kinda boring since the contest is over... I can't even remember what I did before the contest started - I'm usually never bored... so I'm surprised that I am now. :wtf:
I think some of us should just make a thread or a group where members can post their foundations and then people can freely try out building houses/community lots on them. The rules could be bent a bit so the restrictions are not that strict.That would be kind of cool. Obviously if the results were good, people can upload their creations.
I find it more funny to build with a limit or semi-limit for a challenge :)
Well, I'm busy building something else right now, so I haven't really tried too hard to build on your foundation. It looks pretty daunting, though, but I'll take your word for it not being so hard.
You could judge without having to have experience with contests. It's only hosting one that you have to have been in one before, as far as I can tell. But I don't want to force anyone into doing something that they don't want to do. And I'll definitely put a link to it in my signature once I get the contest going, thanks for the advice.
I'm bored, too. I can't imagine what I did before. Now all I think about, practically, is looking to see if there's a new foundation up, which, obviously, isn't going to happen. But it would be cool if, somewhere on the site, there was a thread where people could post foundations and it be a building thread.
Here's another version of Yogi-Tea's wicked Foundation X. Thank you so much for making it, Yogi-Tea!
@GreenLea - thank you for asking for a random foundation!
@Ciane - Wow! I really like what you did with this!
In a far, distant time (and again today) Steampunk was a popular style and way of living with Victorian era state-of-the-art technology based on steam. One romantic idea was the flying ship. I give you Steampunk Landing
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Foundation%20X/SteampunkLanding.jpg
This little landing on Lake Winnemucca is the docking port for two Steampunk airships. The larger has a comfy livingroom, bath (small but usable) and the bedroom. There is also access to the rowboat (which lacks paddles) for emergencies on the water. It is not recommended to use the rowboat while flying! The office is in the captain's cabin upstairs, which gives onto the main deck and the steering deck at the bow. The smaller airship has a small kitchen and a dining room, with a firepit on the deck above. Chess and an easel are available on the dock for skill-building.
The floorplans:
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Foundation%20X/SPLGroundfloor.jpg
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Foundation%20X/SPLSecondfloor.jpg
I play-tested with one Sim for 2 Simdays, and did not run into problems. Two Sims might have difficulty with the narrow gangways, though. The three foundation islets in front hold two clocks and a docksign with a CC belltower. The right side 2 islets support columns, which hold a set of CC paddlewheels. The two rear islets hold buoys (buydebug).
Interior shots:
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Foundation%20X/SPLLivingRoom.jpg
The small but cozy living room with its steam-driven ;-) television set.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Foundation%20X/SPLKitchenshot.jpg
The kitchen and dining room are in the smaller airship. Again, the kitchen might prove problematic for more than 1 Sim at a time. But it does work.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Foundation%20X/SPLBedroom.jpg
The bedroom has two single beds and plenty of room to move around. The bathroom next to it is small, with a claw-foot tub, wash basin and toilet.
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy75/gamine55annie/Foundation%20X/SPLCloseUp.jpg
And finally, a gratuitous close-up of the larger airship. The balloons are, of course also CC. The octopi-balloon-anchors are from buydebug. The rowboat next to the dock is also from buydebug, although someone here made one that actually works better when placed on water. The figurehead is Alexia Full of Hair, enlarged with a very clever piece of CC from here. All other items are from the game and expansions or the store.
Thanks, again, Armiel, for Builder's Island, which provides the background.
Thank you Mia138! But you shouldn't be so negative about your own building - you had some lovely entries in the contest. Besides, I could have done much better if I had invested more time in this one. I started out building a normal Steampunk style house, but it looked too much like the couple of Steampunk houses I had recently downloaded here. I couldn't figure out to make them less derivative. Then I recalled a novel I had read a couple of months ago, whose heroine was a Steampunk airship captain, so I had that inspiration. And luckily, the whole foundation did not sink when I put in the "lake"! Victorian is not a style I usually play around with, but this was strictly for fun and I can use the practice!
Ciane, thank you! I had a lot of fun with this. The original build was a Victorian Steampunk house with museum-like displays on the many foundation singlets, but as I said the main house was not original at all. And I would have liked to be able to run one of the ships aground, but my CFE skills are still in the learning stage. Have to hone those some more - the contest provided so many fine ideas to play around with, too!
A game :) It's usually set in an underwater city in the 1960's which is seen as steampunk-ish influenced but is mostly by art deco, but this 3rd game will be placed in the skies with a flying world faire!
Kaospilot: Hey, didn't you say you'd be on holiday for a while? Well, anyway, welcome back....
I love the idea of a group for foundations. Instead of just posting a new foundation (like I did) we could build something on a foundation with no limit in time and then post the original foundation to see what other people would build on it. Or we could all post foundations, vote for the best one (or three) and then build on it (them).
The little Country Fashion Boutique has everything for the stylish folks. You are clueless about fashion? No problem at all our staff will help you to find your very own style.
http://a.imageshack.us/img121/4129/04boutique.jpg
The entrance to the living quarters of the little country house is at the reverse side of the lot. The bedroom is to the left side of the entrance and the kitchen and livingroom area is just vis--vis. The small bathroom is in the middle of the house. The interior is very simple but functional.
http://a.imageshack.us/img341/3697/05living.jpg
In the backyard there's a pool and an outdoor grill area. The workspace and recreation room is located in a seperate little house right behind the pool. All buildings are connected with a little footpath and/or steps leading to it. In the middle of the lot there's also a nice little vegetable garden with some trees (apple, cherrie, plum) and everything that a vegetarian will appreciate.
It's not that I created the foundation because I had this little cottage in mind - I rather made the foundation like "ah, a little piece of foundation here and there... and there too... and :giggler: here too and... :giggler: whoohoo, that will keep them busy... "
And no, actually I'm everything but evil. I'm surprised myself that I had such evil thoughts in mind when I created this foundation. ;)
All other contestants - let those three enjoy their victory, because next time it will not be as "easy". You all did wonderful work and I saw most of you made noticeable score improvements from one round to the next. Building can be a rewarding learning experience and you all "play well with others"!
Yeah, I'm gonna miss not being in a contest. But hopefully the next one will be up soon.
I think they've already done round 3 judging. They're working on round 4.
Yep, found round 3 scores. http://www.modthesims.info/showpost.php?p=3281200&postcount=88
There you go, if that was what you were looking for.
Thanks! I appreciate it. I couldn't find it. I KNEW I'd take a 20 point hit for CC, but Oh-Well. I knew it when I made the lot. :lol:
Hi folks! Sorry to barge in with a somewhat off-topic question, but do any of you know where the bruton's boxcar is located? Not the diner itself, but the railroad boxcar decoration. I swore I've found it before, but now that I want to use it I can't find it anywhere! :(
