I've put TS3 on another computer.
I LOVE Gone with the Wind, so I built a plantation house for the Sims. I wanted to build Tara, but I couldn't find a complete floor plan.
I'm having trouble with the roof. I tried three different ones. Please tell me which one you like the best, or what I can do to make it better.
I haven't done anything but the exterior of the house. The reason for the carpet in the grass is that I used it make sure the house is centered.

Thanks for the feedback.
The windows and doors that would be PERFECT are made for TS2 (don't remember the name), but they looked great on my TS2 plantation house. I just tried to get as close to them as I could.
Does anyone know if there are any windows similar to the second set I posted, but with shutters? Or maybe a set of shutters that can be placed with any window?

Nice, I love Gone With the WInd. :)
-see this pic: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IYmpm8nMPEY/TZU_xAn2ekI/AAAAAAAACss/G5y5fDV2lqY/s1600/108+GWTW.jpg.
Tara had square brick columns, and the exterior walls were also brick. The windows are square (2nd floor) and
rectangular (first floor), and have green shutters. Also check out the roof in the photo.
Hope this helps.

Checking out your profile, I saw you have Ambitions, so you can try the colonial windows from that game. You might also take a look here:

Here is floorplan too :) - Can't remember what site it's from, but I had a copy saved on my PC.

Those windows were great. Everything Phoenix Phaerie made was great. Too bad she does not make anything for TS3. To make that house you need cfe to make the staircase. I would say for a house that kind you need the roof with a flat area on top and some fences around where the roof goes down. I would also say that floorplan is for a much smaller house. The picture also looks like a much smaller house.
My father's old house is bigger then that one. That house has a big kitchen to the left, 2 utility rooms to the right, a livingroom and an "nice" livingroom to the back. The kichen was a bit smaller since the bath was behind there. It was an old house so bathroom was added much later of cause.
When you came into the house you had the hall with an entrance to the nice livingroom at the back, the 2 utiliy rooms to the right, and a staircase to the left. That was a straight foreward staircase. By the staircase was the door to the kitchen. On the second floor was a roof with room for angled wardrobes, and storage. 2 big bedrooms and a smaller one.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that staircase might be too much for you. This house is easier to build. I would suggest you build a full bedroom floor though, with a terrace with colomns at the front.

You may want to take a look at these, 3D models of the house:

As you can see there are many differences between the one you created and the actual Tara, but what you did so far is good, so you could just add further parts to what you've done and fix everything up.
Tara is not just the white colonial mansion, it also has a red brick part which I believe contains the kitchen and the servants' apartments (this explains why there's no kitchen in the floorplan) and another woody stable which is also a cotton stock.

Man I love GaGa more than myself! Anyhoooos! To replicate this wrap around stairs, I suggestion using Lisen801's modular stair corner set.

@daluved1 LOL My heart belongs to Momma Monster too ♥
The colonial windows you're looking for could be these:

I suggest these ones:
http://www.thesimsresource.com/downloads/915709
Because there are more windows, but keep in mind that it is a subscriber's download, and MTS usually rejects lots which contain TSR items. Anyways I have both the sets installed and they look really good.

I started out making just a plain plantation house instead of Tara. But I've decided to make Tara now.
What's CFE?
Volvenom, which staircase are you talking about?
Thanks for the help.

What's CFE?
ConstrainFloorElevation
More specifically, constrainfloorelevation false to turn it on, and constrainfloorelevation true to turn it off.
In my opinion, it's the single most useful command in lot building, and makes structures that wouldn't otherwise be possible, possible.

In looking at the photos, use the gable roof for the main part of the house, then pull it down with the roof height adjuster. For the porch, use the half gable roof and pull it down quite a bit, too. The two storey part at the left is also a gable roof with a higher pitch (height). The side building (with the kitchen / servents' quarters) is the half mansard (?) roof, I think. There's a flat part that goes against the wall, the ridge beam, then an upside down V at the end.
CFE is used to build L-shaped or U-shaped / split level staircases as well as for other building "tricks". There are numerous tutorials if you want to give it a try. It saves a lot of room and makes much "grander" staircases. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips/advice.
I've almost got the stairs figured out, except for the final step. I followed mikeInside's tutorial http://mikeinside.modthesims2.com/building/stairwall2/index.html and everything did fine until I had to level the terrain. I know it's for TS2, but it did great, until the final step.
I may be asking dumb questions, but I'm new at this (obviously).

To level the terrain I would just use the level terrain tool actually. You should try use tutorials for TS3, there is a few very important differences. Search youtube to get those. Tons of them there. Some very good too.
No problem asking. That's why we have this place. We've all had to figure this out one time too.
If you want that roof you can just lower the angle. In the roof tool section is a little icon to click on and then just drag the roof down.
Edit: I wonder if that roof angle adjuster came with some package? What ever did I do before that?

leo06girl, primarily you need to build an entablature http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entablature underneath the pediment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pediment.
Secondly, I think you need to place double columns instead of single one
