View Full Version : Two Graphics cards, one computer???

So I have a new(ish) laptop computer and I got it because I am a Sims 3 player. It runs on Windows 7 64-bit. A while ago I started having crashes while playing the game. I got the computer knowing it had a Nvidia GeForce 310m graphics card. So I updated it and it crashed again. That is when I realized I have an Intel HD Graphics driver running and that is what makes it crash. My computer says it is updated so I don't understand the problem. Can I disable the Intel Graphics or will that mess up my computer?

I just want to be able to play without it crashing. :cry:
Oh! And I have Sims 3 Base, WA, Ambitions, Late Night, Generations, and Pets. And the latest updates for all.

I'm going to need a bit more info before I can help.

Most of the information needed can be found by clicking on the 'Start Menu' -> 'Run' -> typing in 'dxdiag'. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window that appears, there's a button on the bottom labelled "Save All Information..." click that. It will then ask you to save the text file somewhere. Save it in a place you'll be able to find later, then copy/paste the information here or upload the txt file so I can read it.

Also when you say you updated, do you mean using the Windows Automatic Update?

It sounds like you're using a laptop with switchable graphics, in which case the GeForce card will be the one that's being used when you're playing TS3. If your computer is a desktop, then let us know, because there may be other problems involved if a desktop is recognising integrated graphics when there is a dedicated card installed.

Also, make sure you've done the Game Help:Sims 3 Game Problem FAQ, to rule out other causes.

I updated the Nvidia card by looking it up, I used windows for my Intel because it was a little confusing the other way. I KNOW it is the graphics because of a pop-up I get saying "The Intel HD Graphics Driver has crashed and repaired itself." But it still crashes. I do have custom content but I highly doubt that is the cause. My specs are as follows:

I really want to know if I can just disable the Intel Graphics and use the Nvidia one, at least for the Sims...?

What kind of laptop do you have? If it's a problem with your computer making the wrong decision about which graphics card to use, you may need to talk to the manufacturer. (Although, argh, I know how much fun that usually is.)

I believe that NVIDIA recommends getting drivers from the original manufacturer when possible--in your case, the NVIDIA driver has to work together properly with the Intel driver. I'm not sure what all the fine print means, but it seems that isn't a given with just any driver you download.

The DxDiag seems to say he's using a Samsung SF310. It's recognizing the Intel HD and the Nvidia GeForce 310M but the display adapter being used is the Intel.

According to Intel (http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-031103.htm), Samsung is responsible for the switching of Graphics on your laptop. Here's what they say:

My laptop supports Switchable Graphics. How do I switch between using Intel graphics and the discrete graphics controller?
It depends on how the laptop computer manufacturer designed the system. Some laptops have a hardware switch. Some laptops have an icon in the Windows taskbar that you can use to switch the graphics controller. Some laptops automatically switch to the Intel graphics if the notebook changes to battery power, or it can switch to the discrete graphics if the laptop is plugged into AC power.

Check the help documentation from your computer manufacturer to decide how to make this switch on your specific laptop computer.

You didn't really answer my reply, but from your answer I'm guessing you did indeed use Windows Update. In most cases you should only update your graphic drivers from your manufacturer's website.

Here's the US support website for Samsung SF-310: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/NP-SF310-S01US. If you go to that page, then click "Manuals & Downloads", then menu will change and right beneath it there will be a submenu. Click "Driver". What I believe you need is "VGA(Graphics),NVIDIA (Driver) (ver.8.17.12.6672) " Windows7(64bit) Nov 21, 2011. Size 133.69MB. You might want to get "Easy Display Manager (Software) (ver.3.2.3.2) " as well in the software section although I would try without it first.

Here's what I suggest you do. Download the nvidia driver I mentioned above. Then go to your control panel and click "Programs and Features" (or if you CP is displaying by category click "Uninstall a program" under the "Programs" header). In the window that appears, look for any Nvidia drivers that have already been installed. Uninstall them. Reboot and check again. Once you're fairly certain there are no old Nvidia drivers, install the ones you downloaded from Samsung. Follow the onscreen instructions and then reboot when done. Launch game and see if that helps.

I don't have a samsung laptop so unfortunately that's the best I can do for now.
