View Full Version : Creating custom paintings with Photo Studio
CynicalChick
8th Oct 2005, 02:05 AM
Required:
* A paint program such as Photoshop or PaintShop
* SimPE (version .48 or higher for Nightlife)
1. Select an image for your painting. The higher the quality, the better your painting will look. In this example I'll be using this water lily.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/shyfox777/paintingbase.jpg
2. Once you have selected your image, run SimPE and open Photo Studio.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/shyfox777/PStut1.jpg
3. Which template you use is a matter of personal choice. You'll notice that each one has an image size listed. For best results, try to crop or resize your image to as close to that size as possible - otherwise the finished painting may look stretched or squashed. In this example, I'm using Bella Squared. You can search the site for additional templates if you don't see what you want.
Since there are so many different paint programs available, I won't go into the details of photo editing. Check the help files or seach the web for a tutorial if you need assistance with this part.
4. In Photo Studio, check Preview and uncheck Flip Image. Click Open and select your image from it's stored location.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/shyfox777/PStut2.jpg
5. You should now see something similar to this. If you are satisfied with the results, click Create.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/shyfox777/PStut3.jpg
6. You can save this package directly to Downloads or the folder of your choice. Give it a unique name. Click Save. Photo Studio will now work for a moment or two.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/shyfox777/PStut4.jpg
7. When you see this screen, you're finished. You can now repeat this process to make more paintings or simply close the program if you are done creating.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/shyfox777/PStut5.jpg
8. Load up your game and your new painting should be available for you to enjoy.

I was so glad to see this come up because I've just started playing around with customizing objects. I followed the instructions and created the package files, but they don't show up in my game (they are in the downloads folder). Earlier today I created new bedding - that worked... but the paintings aren't working. Any suggestions?
thanks

Did you recolor any? Old paintings i mean. Because if you did than it will be in that picture if you recolored it.

Aha! I finally realized that the thumbnail of the paintings that shows up in the game in Buy mode doesn't change, you have to select the original base painting in order to see your own versions. So I did eventually figure it out! Thanks!

6th Nov 2005, 02:10 PM
you shouldn't need photoshop to create them just photostudio in the SimPE, any paint program would work so long as you can resize the photos in it to make them the correct size for the template, which I think you can do even in MSpaint.

I love this tutorial but have a question?
Is there anyway to make an orignal painting that will show up under the buy mode instead of finding the original painting thumbnail and then clicling on it to find the picture you made?
I find it so hard to remember what picture I have to pick to find the painting I made.
Hope this makes some kind of sense :2cents:
Thanks

Am bumping this because I also want to know how to make an original painting - not a recolour...I've used the search option and cannot find anything relating to it...
Any ideas??
EDIT: I'm having problems with this....I downloaded more picture templates
from here (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=94356) and using the Pineapple Nightlife picture, followed the tutorial to a T, but my recolours won't show up at all....

Thank you so much for this tutorial CynicalChick, this has really helped me a lot for my own Sims picture-making, and the Photo Studio is great! I was just wondering is there a way to recolor the frames-of the pictures you recolor from Photo Studio?
I love the ease with which to make custom paintings...and would love to know how to make custom color frames to go with them. I've looked all over and don't know where to find out how I can do that :( Any help would be appreciated :)

2nd May 2006, 11:12 PM
Usually, the first time you invoke Photo Studio, SimPE automatically downloads the needed templates. Maybe you cancelled the download/installation or something went wrong...
Try manually download the Photo Studio Templates from this page (http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/realdownload/) and install them.

Thanks for your reply. That didn't work either. I'm at a loss.
Numenor
2nd May 2006, 11:47 PM
If you have installed SimPE, the CEP and the templates, I see no reason why it shouldn't work... I'm at a loss, too...
I can only suggest to double check the correct installation of the various elements. In particular, opend the folder where SimPE is installed and go into the Data folder: you should see several ".template" files (they are the templates for the PhotoStudio).
Ah! What about the DDS utilities? Have you installed them?
I'm not absolutely sure they are needed for the PhotoStudio to work, but it worths a try, anyway.
Read about installing the DDS utilities and configuring SimPE HERE (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=102356)

3rd May 2006, 12:21 AM
Nope, that didn't work either and all the template files are there. This just makes no sense.
After running a system check with Simpe, for some reason the CEP is not installed. I have redownloaded it and installed 4 times, and it still keeps telling me "unable to locate (path)/_EnableColorOptionsGMND.package." It is directly in my downloads folder, not a subfolder. Why is this? Thanks for your help and patience. I'm not an idiot, I swear!
Finally got it! I play my game using a different user account, but for some reason, Simpe was picking up that the CEP was not on the one I play with. Weird. Anyway, thank you so much for your help. I appreciate it.

Nothing; once the CEP has been installed, you don't need to do anything else.
Just to be sure it was correctly installed, perform the check explained in the CEP faq: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?p=1105291#post1105291

I don't think there is a "viewing CEP". There is only one kind of CEP that both enables you to have extra color options in the game and also to create recolors or recolorable objects. It has nothing to do with meshes, though. Are you maybe confusing CEP and SimPE?

What photo "thingy" are you talking about hon? Are you talking about the Photo Studio section in SimPE? Or are you talking about the picture you've created. If it's the latter of the two, then I'm not sure what the problem could be. As to the Photo Studio, you need to download the Photo Studio Templates here: http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/realdownload/ Scroll down until you see Additional Downloads Then click on this: SimPE Photostudio Templates (2.317 mb) It should automatically install.

This one's actually fairly simple. Once your sim is finished creating a painting, you pause the game and click on the easle. This will automatically select the painting. After you do that, place the painting on your wall and voila. Instant painting from your artistic sim. :-D

The new layout looks somehow different from the one depictet in the tutorial, but there are no substantial differences... I can't modify the tutorial on SimPE's site, but if there is a specific step/screenshot that you can't understand due to the new layout of SimPE, post here and I'll try and help you.

I tried following the tutorial, but when I tried using my new template, the pictures wound up categorized under a pre-existing picture.
I did have trouble on Step #7 of the tutorial, which says, "Import the Property Set file (EBCF3E27 - Property Set - FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF.simpe.xml) available in the "Painting Template Files" at the start of this tutorial section." I couldn't figure out how to import it, so I simply added it. However, the plugin view of the texture image still had the original painting, whereas in the tutorial, the texture image was the new one of the farmhouse.

Is there any other place I can get templates to make custom paintings? I wanted to make really big paintings. Am I limited to using the Maxi's templates?
Numenor
20th Jul 2006, 03:30 PM
Photo Studio is a plugin that allows you to easily apply a custom texture to an existing Maxis mesh. If you want to create a painting bigger than the Maxis ones, you need a new mesh for it.

Thank you for the tutorial!! It was very easy to follow and I've made a few pictures using pics I've taken....
My question: I've seen a lot of people make pictures (and recolors) using Disney characters...is there a problem there with copyright? I found some great pics on the internet but I'm afraid making sim pics with them and making them available for download would be infringing on copyright...any ideas? Is it okay to use anything we find? I don't want to end up getting sued (although I don't have much they could take anyways LOL)

I have seen, too, some recolours that use copyrighted materials, but I definitely think they should NOT be used that freely.
I mean, creating a sims2 lot that has the shape of the Disney castle, or creating a Sim that resambles the Little Mermaid is one thing (and I do agree that it should be allowed); but grabbing a Disney copyrighted image and putting it, as is, on a painting frame is another thing... BTW, some majors (and Disney is one of the most active in this) DO prosecute anyone using its copyrighted material.
Therefore, I strongly discourage using copyrighted images on paintings, wallpapers and floors. This is MY opinion, though; it is NOT an official response by MTS2.
EDIT:
Talking about a similar case, back in February, LyricLee has told us moderators:
Unless disney comes to us to complain i let them go thru no problem
So, unless the official position of MTS2 has changed since then (and I don't believe so), you can go on creating your paintings... :)

One question though...is there any way to put all those separate packages for recolors into one package?
Thanks again for the tut!
IgnorantBliss
9th Aug 2006, 04:44 AM
It's possible, but not recommended. When you do that, you can't individually delete recolors, you either have to keep them all or none. Better to keep them as separate packages.

Hi the tutorial is great but I do have a question. How would one find the paintings that sims make such as still lifes in game in order to make buyable paintings from them? I have one in particular made by a sim of mine that turned out extremely well and I would love to make it a buyable painting.
I would like to know the best answer to this question, too.
I was able to find the sim-created paintings using SimPE. I found them in the lot package where the painting was created. I was able to export them as PNG files. I assume that I will be able to "recolor" another painting object with these PNG files. I also assume that I could create entirely new objects. I'm not sure that any other method is possible.
It would be great if a sim could simply put the painting that she has created in her own inventory when she moves to another lot. But it seems that this is not possible. If a sim creates a portrait on her easel and then moves out of the house, the painting that she has created is gone forever.
NOTE: I am new here. I will continue to search the forums for the best answer to this question. I will bookmark this thread. If I find a good answer to this question, I'll come back here and link to it. If I can't find a good answer, I might put together a tutorial. (Although I am new here, I have experience with game modification.)
Cheers.

Required:
* A paint program such as Photoshop or PaintShop
* SimPE (version .48 or higher for Nightlife)
I don't think this question has been asked yet in this thread.. But my question is simple. You say we need SimPE for Nightlife, but currently I only have the EP University.. So is it still possible for me to create my own custom paintings with only University?
I've been searching for a tutorial for this kind of thing for a long time, to no avail... So thank you so much for this! >_< I really appriciate it, I only hope that it will still work with just University... If not, then I guess I'll have to wait untill I can afford Nightlife. @@;
Once again, thank you.~

I think it just means that if you have Nightlife, you need version 0.48 of SimPE. If you don't have Nightlife, then that part of text doesn't apply to you :).

What this tutorial creates is a painting recolor, and you can't edit those values in a recolor file. You will need to clone the painting to be able to change those. On how to clone objects, see JWoods object creation tutorial.

I am having problems.
I followed the steps exactly but when I export my custom image, it doesn't show up in the game.

Mmmmhh... Why you say "I export my custom image"? You are supposed - in step 6 - to save your package in the Downloads: did you mean this?
Check if your package is actually in the Downloads folder: perhaps while saving it something went wrong...

... As to the Photo Studio, you need to download the Photo Studio Templates here: http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/realdownload/ Scroll down until you see Additional Downloads Then click on this: SimPE Photostudio Templates (2.317 mb) It should automatically install.
Thank you!! I have had a problem getting photo studio working (I had it working before, but I installed something bad on my sims and lost EVERYTHING! :( )
so now it works. You need the templetes for it to show up and the CEP packs. you can get them on the same page as above.

I'm not sure to understand.
If you mean that every time you clone a painting, the new painting replaces the original painting, then you forget to register a new GUID for your clone.
What are the "writings" you are talking about?
CynicalChick
27th Jan 2007, 09:26 PM
It sounds like they are talking about a custom description for the item.. but I'd discourage cloning an item just for the sake of having different text there.

You can't make a painting for the game with just Photoshop, you need a way to turn it into a game recolor. For that you can use Photoshop, Wizards of SimPE or Object Workshop, which are all parts of SimPE.

I love this tutorial. It just took away all the trouble in making some nice pictures. I just have one weird problem: The picture (both image and frame) don't hide when the walls hide, the keep showing. All I can say, is that I saved the images in PNG format, non-interlaced (worked with Photoshop), and used the same size that the original picture.
What I'm doing wrong?
Thanks again for a great tutorial!
IgnorantBliss
10th Jul 2007, 06:38 PM
Are you looking at the painting in Buy mode? Because then the paintings don't go down with walls, only after you go to "play" mode.
Reid_stone_uo
11th Jul 2007, 11:10 PM
Yes, I'm looking at the pictures in play mode. The don't hide at all. However, I did some testing yesterday at night, and I found that the problem apears only in the University dorms; in the downtown lots, nightlife or OBF, and in the normal lots (at least in Pleasentview), the pictures do hide with the walls.
So....I don't have the silghtes idea of what I'm doing wrong
Thanks for the tip, anyway.

SimPE itself is a tool that was designed to work on Windows only, no Mac version is available. I'm afraid that if you are interested in modding this game, at any level (from a simple recolour to a complex new clothing mesh) you need SimPE and a PC...

Thank you for this great tut. It was so easy to understand, so i thought maybe even i could make paintings.. well, i did, quite many at the time, and when i went to game.. nothing. I have all preferences just how those are meant to be, cep and templates, nothing is missing, but my recolors don't show up under the base paintings. And i remember that sometimes i have downloaded others recolors, and they haven't been in my game either. So what is wrong, i really have no idea.

27th Jul 2007, 03:47 PM
If you have an older CEP and installed new EP then you should need an updated CEP.
Also a recolor of Maxis will appear as an option in the same painting you recolored and not as a separate painting. ( but perhaps you already knew that).
Perhaps you could attach a recolor of yours to look at and see if there is anything wrong with the recolor itself. :-)

First of all, thank you for this great tutorial! I've always wanted to create my own paintings for my sims and I did it a lot with Sims 1. And now I can do it with Sims 2 also! :)
I only have one little problem with my new paintings... I can create the pictures with SimPE with no problems and they also work fine in the game, but still the game flips some of my pictures even though I've unchecked the "Flip image" box in SimPE. The pictures seem fine in SimPE, they are not flipped but when I go to the game, they are flipped. This is very disturbing when I've made for example movie posters for my sims to enjoy and then it is flipped...

SimPE is a specify editor to create, mod and edit the game TS2.

And, of course, you have to download and install it on your machine (pc)

No, there is not. In order to create new custom content for the game you need SimPE.
There was another tool "GameExtractor"but I think it is not supported anymore.

You need to install the plugin go to
http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/realdownload/
scroll down and in the section "Additional Downloads", you'll find the plugin "SimPE Photostudio Templates".
Simply download it and install as usual. When you'll run SimPE you'll get it to work fine.

If you don't know how to manage a rar, well, perhaps you will find difficult to follow this tutorial, too; a minimum of knowledge and experience with your own PC is required in any case. I suggest you to download and install one of the free rar programs that you can find around. 7-zip is very good, for example.

9th Dec 2007, 12:44 PM
To be honest Object Workshop really isn't that complicated to create recolours, if the Photo Studio isn't working. I'd definitely give it a try at least with the tutorial!
Either way, if there's a problem with SimPE you need to go to the SimPE forum to report it or get support.
Marier - if you don't get on with 7Zip then there is a Stuffit Expander for Windows which I'm fairly certain supports rar's - it seems quite a friendly program because the Mac folks seem to like their version of it. Although really any zip client is easy enough once you've got it set up the way you want it because you can then just extract anything on your machine by right clicking on it! Link - > http://www.stuffit.com/win/expander/
Numenor is certainly right that not being able to deal with rars is a problem here because a lot of tutorials you may want are in rars, plus think of all those lovely downloads here you could have if you can open a rar file :)

It is in the root Downloads folder, I meant a subfolder within the root Download folder. All my downloads are organized in subfolders, so I had (now it is back in the main folder) also put the CEP in a subfolder so I would know where it is, this is what I meant.

The paintings appear in the PhotoStudio only if someone has created a "template" for it. It's not automatic.
Since there are already a lot of paintings to choose from, newer paintings are not added any more to the PhotoStudio.
If you need to recolour one specific painting that doesn't appear in the PhotoStudio, you have to follow the general tutorial for recolouring (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=102356).

thanks for replying, Numeror. I tried the other tutorial but paintings seems to have only one recolourable part. I was so far I could export a file, change the texture in another pic and open my example again in SimsPe objectmaker but I'm lost how I have to import so I can see it in the game. I'm bit afraid I will overwrite an original file and crash my game. Is there a tutorial for an object with only one recolourable part ?

Numeror, I did it !!! I made two paintings thanks to your other tutorial. I tried a third with another frame but that turned black in my game but I'm so glad I managed the first ones.

First, this is a wonderful tutorial!! I've been making pictures galore!! Thank you!!
Second, Somehow my "Lady in Red" picture is gone. It shows up in the Object Workshop, and in the photo templates, but when I go into the game it's not there!! How can I possibly find it without taking out all my downloads? ( I have alot of downloads!!) The only thing I can think of is that I downloaded someone else's picture that overwrote it, is that correct?
Third, I'm having a problem with pictures that have words. Every time I make a poster with words it gets reversed in the game. Do I uncheck the flip box, or leave it?
Thank you so much for all your hard work and help!! :)

Puppetfish, that's a possibility... You could have SimPE check for GUID conflicts.. or the alternative is to remove all the downloads. As far as the text being inverted, I wish I had a better answer... sometimes I swear "Flip Image" doesn't pay attention and sometimes I have to redo them. If there's a logic to it, I haven't found it.
d4nny... be sure you're looking under the right base painting, cc is enabled, etc

what is the right base painting? i had no cc apart from the photot i tryed to make i usally get a screen pop up after starting the sims saying all the cc i got in it but that didnt come up i had moved all my stuff out of my download folder out of the game when i was trying to make this

Well, that depends on which painting you chose when creating the picture.. Let's say you chose Lady on Red. When you select it, you should see the recolor as another choice. And when you moved out the downloads, did you leave the EnableColorOptionsGMND in there?

Photo Studio requires the CEP in order to work. If you didn't already, install or reinstall it.

Try to install the plugin go to
http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/realdownload/
scroll down and in the section "Additional Downloads", you'll find the plugin "SimPE Photostudio Templates".
Simply download it and install as usual. When you'll run SimPE you'll get it to work fine.

Alright. I've read this entire thread and my photo studio is still grayed out. I used to be able to use it, before I had BV. Now I have BV, and the newest version of SimPe and today I reinstalled CEP (made sure it's in the downloads folder, and no subfolders), reinstalled the Photo Studio templates, reinstalled DDS Utilities, made sure all my paths were correct and it's still grayed out. I really am stumped now. There's no reason it shouldn't be working now.

Sorry, read the first page and skipped to the last page, too many to read through. I was wondering how to make your own custom picture, as in so that I don't have to look for the picture frame that I had assigned my picture to from this tutorial. Sometimes it gets really hard to find with all the pictures for sale, but with the star icon it will be much easier to find.

This tutorial is intended to add a new image to an existing painting; if I understand well, you want to create a brand new custom painting, autonomous and separated from all the other existing paintings. To do so, you have to clone a painting, following the general object creation tutorial (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=104795)

Frangellica, did u actually UN-install the old version or simply download the new version over the top? This causes problems. You need to completely uninstall any old versions first. Also.... check you settings in Preferences listed under Extra... make sure under System Folders the correct file path is specified for Nvidia. When I downloaded a new version, my puter didn't automatically detect it. I had to specify the file path for Photo Studio to work. :) Hope this helps!

This tutorial looks real easy for a beginner like me to use. Thanks.
Though, I do have a question or two though.
Now, I recently downloaded SimPE (Never have before just getting into CC) and it's the new version and downloaded the SimPE Photo Studio Template I assumed was needed.
So, I went to follow your tut, but Photo Studio is grayed out? I'm not sure why though. I read the thread a bit and saw some people having a similar problem. Is there something else I'm suppose to download or was that it?

The picture in Step 4 shows the list of available "templates". The templates should be automatically downloaded and installed when you first run PhotoStudio, but in any case you can manually download them from the download page (http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/realdownload/) at SimPe site.
The original textures are just shown in the selector (to let you understand which painting you are going to recolour), but can't be extracted using PhotoStudio. You have to clone the painting using Object Workshop, if you want to extract the original texture.

you shouldn't need photoshop to create them just photostudio in the SimPE, any paint program would work so long as you can resize the photos in it to make them the correct size for the template, which I think you can do even in MSpaint.
ya MS paint should work, I used to use it and a similar method for custom paintings in sims1. Just use the rectangle thing to re-size once you have up loaded pic to MS paint :D

I have either the 8.0 or 8.1 vers of CEP, I just used the autoinstaller file from this site. And my photo studio is still grey in the simPE. Any idea where I can get the latest CEP? The CEP thread mentions 8.1 briefly but I don't think I was able to get it.
