View Full Version : Tutorial: How to Replace NPC's

This tutorial will take you through the necessary steps to replace the Maxis default meshes and clothes that are used by the game's NPC's (maid, mailcarrier, exterminator, etc). Much if not most of this tutorial is a duplicate of the great tutorial written by WDS BriAnna which can be found here: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=43092 If you're having difficulty understanding this tutorial, I suggest you read that one also. Because it is so similar, in this tutorial I will show you a different way of doing it by using SimPE's Resource Finder plugin, and using a trick of mine to prevent long loading times.

**("Quick and Dirty" method listed at end of post)**

-------------------
What you'll need:
1. Download and install the latest version of SimPE.
1.a. Install the Microsoft .NET framework if you don't have it.

2.Find a mesh and matching clothing that you want to use.
(Note that all NPC's use 1-piece meshes, so you can only use a 1-piece mesh replacement for this mod, not a Top and/or Bottom mesh)
------------------

*Explanation: There are two types of "bodies" in the game. Some are made of a single piece (mesh), such as a formal evening gown mesh, and some are made of two pieces, top and bottom. This corresponds to when you're making a Sim in "create a family" and you can either choose clothing that is one-piece or has the top and bottom separate.
------------------

For this tutorial I will be using Sanmoo's excellent MiniMaid, which can be found here:
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=75570

I'll show you how to use this to replace the female maid NPC. First, right-click on your Desktop and select New > Folder (you can delete these when you're finished) and name it MooMesh. Right-click again and select New > Folder and name it OriginalMesh, and make another named OriginalTexture.

Start SimPE and open the MeshMooMaid42505.package file. In the left pane, you will see a list of Resources. Left-click on Geometric Data Container (GMDC). Now you will see it by itself in the right-hand pane (packed files window). Right-click on this (the name right under where it says "type") Geometric Data Container and select "Extract" from the drop-down menu.
**See Screenshot 1** --> http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139967&thumb=1 (http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139967)

A box will pop up asking you for a save location. From the pull-down "Save in" box, select Desktop, double-click your "MooMesh" folder and save it in there. From the SimPE menu, select File > Open and open 5fa167a0_SanmooMiniMaid.package so we can get the textures. In the left pane (resources), left-click on "Texture Image (TXTR) (2)". In the right pane you'll now see the base texture and the normal map texture. NPC outfits don't use normal maps, so we don't need that. Left-click on the file ending in "body~StdMatBaseTextureName_txtr". On the bottom bar of SimPE click on "Plugin" if it's not already selected and you should see the green maid outfit. In the Plugin window click the Export button and save the image to your desktop.
**See Screenshot 2** --> http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139968&thumb=1 (http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139968)

Now we need to hunt down the NPC maid's mesh and texture. On SimPE's bottom bar, click the "Finder" button. If there's not one there, go to Window > Resource Finder. In the Resource Finder pulldown "Match" menu, select "Regular Expression", type in ".*maid.*gmdc" (That's dot star maid dot star gmdc) and click the Start button. Be sure you're searching in Namemaps. Now you'll have to wait patiently for a bit. In a moment you should see your search results. Eight results or so (dress, hair, body, vehicle). We want "afBodyDressMaid_tslocator_gmdc".
**See Screenshot 3** --> http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139969&thumb=1 (http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139969)

Double-click afBodyDressMaid_tslocator_gmdc in the search results. Now you'll see that SimPE has opened Sims03.package. Do not do anything yet! Do this "trick" I learned to avoid SimPE's long loading times: On the upper-right side of SimPE, click the magnifying glass icon labeled "Filter". Click the Pin (auto-hide) icon on the pop-out menu so it doesn't vanish on you. Now in the filter, type in a nonsense number and click SET.
**See Screenshot 4** --> http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139970&thumb=1 (http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139970)

This effectively prevents SimPE from trying to load all the file's resources. Now that you've done that, in the left pane (resources), left-click on Name Map. Now delete the nonsense number you typed in the filter box and click SET again. The Name Map should appear in the right pane. Left-click it and at the bottom of SimPE, click the Plugin view. This will bring up the File Map Editor window with all the names. On the bottom-right of your screen is a box labeled Finder, Filename:. Type in "afbodydressmaid" and SimPE will automatically scroll down to the "lod15" entry (we NEVER want any files with "LOD" in the name). In the left window you'll see just below the highlighted name is the file we want. Left-click on that (afbodydressmaid_tslocator_gmdc) and it will appear on the right in the "Properties" box. Highlight and Copy the Instance number.
**See Screenshot 5** --> http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139971&thumb=1 (http://thumbs.modthesims2.com/getimage.php?file=139971)

Paste the Instance number in the Filter box you used earlier and click SET. In the left pane, left-click on Geometric Data Container and you'll see a single file appear in the right pane. Left-click on that file in the right pane and wait a moment while SimPE loads the file, then right-click it and select Extract and save it to your OriginalMesh folder.

Now that we know the name of the file we're searching for, we can narrow our search. At the bottom of SimPE, choose the Finder again and this time we'll use "Regular Expression" and .*afbodydressmaid.*cres for our search. Note that sometimes it can get flaky and you may need to close and re-start SimPE if the search seems to take 2 seconds and you get no results. Follow the above procedure again (double-click Resource Node: afBodyDressMaid_cres in the Finder results, when you see SimPE has opened Sims06.package, select Name Map, then clear and SET the Filter number, switch to Plugin View, find the name and Instance number, set the Filter number and click on Resource Node (CRES) (1534) in the left pane, Extract the file to your OriginalMesh folder). Do the same for .*afbodydressmaid.*gmnd and .*afbodydressmaid.*shpe, extracting and saving them to your OriginalMesh folder.

Once you've extracted and saved all four files, from SimPE's menu select File > New. Right-click in the empty space in the right pane and select "Add". SimPE should by default open your OrignalMesh folder where you saved the files. Add all four files ending in .XML and select File > Save and save as whatever you want to call it. I'll name mine "Targas_Maid_Mesh_Replacement". Save it in your Downloads folder.

Go back to Finder > Regular Expression and type in .*afbodydressmaid.*lifo and click Start. You'll get "afBodyDressMaid-whitelace0_lifo and whitelace1_lifo as your results. Follow the same procedure as above, this time extracting to your OriginalTextures folder. Do this for both the 0 and 1 whitelace files. Once you've done that, change your Finder search to .*afbodydressmaid.*txtr (found in Sims07.package) and extract that also.

Select File > New again and this time add the .xml files from your OriginalTextures folder and save that file with the name of your choice to your downloads folder.

*Explanation: The mesh file and its associated information, extracted directly from the game files and saved in your Downloads folder is now the new information source the game will use to load a maid's body. The same is true for the textures, so anything you put in there will now replace every female maid in the game.

In SimPE's menu, select File > Recent Files > and open your Orignal Mesh package. In the left pane, left-click on Geometric Data Container and in the right pane right-click and select "Replace" from the menu. Browse to your folder named "mesh" (where you extracted Sanmoo's minimaid mesh) and select the xml file. SimPE will pop up a box saying the resource has changed. Click yes and then save the file. By using "replace" you've placed a different mesh in the file, but the game will still see it as the default maid mesh.

Open the image of Sanmoo's green dress you exported in the beginning of this tutorial in PSP or Photoshop and resize it to 512x512, save it under a different name (as a .png file), resize it again to 256x256 and save again. Open the Original Maid texture package and click on the file name in the right pane ending in "whitelace0". In the plugin view, click the Import button and import Sanmoo's original image. Click the Commit button. Replace "whitelace1" with the resized 512x512 image, and whitelace_txtr with the 256x256 image. When you replace this one, you'll see it has a number of entries instead of a single image. Right-click on the 256x256 image and select "Update all sizes". Be sure to commit after every change. Save.

Go in-game and call a female maid and you'll have a Sanmoo maid! :)

Some names you can search for: barista, maid, maildelivery, gardener, exterminator... the list goes on. If you want to find more names, you can run the Object Workshop in SimPE and look under "Other > Outfit". Note that if it's a teen NPC you'll need to use a teen-sized mesh.

**"Quick and Dirty" method: Technically, to replace the mesh all you need is the Geometric Data Conatiner (GMDC). This is all I use when I do it, because it reduces file size. However, SimPE can sometimes give you error messages when you attempt to replace the mesh with your own, because SimPE is looking for a so-called "complete" file, so it may take a couple of attempts and re-starts of SimPE to get it to work if you get "no parent found in search path" errors. With this method you only extract the Geometric Data Container and not the CRES, GMND, or SHPE files. File > New in SimPE and add the extracted .xml of (as in our example) afBodyDressMaid_tslocator_gmdc and save. Replace this with the .xml of your own mesh and it will work just as well as having the full 4-file package.

Thanks very much
i tried it yesterday (step by step because English is not my native language)
and made my own new maid with one of Aardvarkans ' mini robes
then i tried to change the gardener and the mail deliver person but as far as now
i couldn't find the textures in the game
(lol i changed an afletterman which in fact is not the post mail girl)
but i noticed that we can use .* as wildcard in search window
i.e. ' .*maid.* will list all occurences of maid found
so i go back to my search
thanks again, very helpfull

lefourbe, I hope to see your screenshot of your new maid. :)

afbodymaildelivery and ambodymaildelivery for the mail people. afbodygardener and ambodygardener for the gardeners. Using the finder you can simply type "gardener" or "delivery" also, if you're using the "contains" search function. Glad to see someone's using this and having success. :)

The exact texture names are afbodymaildelivery-standardblue0_lifo, etc...

Try using .*mail.*lifo and .*mail.*txtr for the mail delivery textures. The reason you can't find the gardener textures is because of a Maxis typo. The name is "gardner" (missing an 'e'). Try .*gardner.*lifo and .*gardner.*txtr. The file name is aubodygardner-femaleoutfit and aubodygardner-maleoutfit I believe.

Targa, yes, i found that after posting my previous message
unfortunately, i couldn't change the meshes for gardener and handyman
i suppose that's due to the lifo bumps that i didn't not touch
so i just change the textures for the moment i will try again later
when i have played with all npc i can think of
same for the mail i want to keep the mail bag and it's placed in the same area
(center down) than the modified meshes skirt in the texture map
so i keep the same base mesh
another thing
i tried to use Sup@tramp fairy mesh but it has 2 textures maps so no success
too bad because the skirt alpha really works and can be made cut or transparent
on choice
if you have any idea ...
in the meantime i continue to test
you tutorial opened me a lot of things to try

Pfish, i'll take a screenshot as soon as i go back in the game
if you know Aardvarkans's meshes, this is the violet one just painted in black
with a semi transparent corsage (for the moment at is was a test and i could change
my mind)

OK. Question.

Suppose we want to use a mesh that came with the game for our NPC? Is there a way of doing that?

(For Example: using the medieval dress, and a recolour for the maid)

Uhm, WHERE is this "MeshMooMaid42505.package" file?
;.;''
I can't even start to use this tutorial now... Blah...
Please explain more for those of us who've not done anything like this before!

The first step to perform, when following a tutorial is... uhm... read it! :)

Targa says that the tutorial uses the maid clothing downloadable from this link:
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=75570

Open that page and download the zip: the package you mention is inside that zip.

Where can I find the nanny one? I've looked everywhere for its package. Cannot find it even with wild card :(

Numenor

This tutorial only explains *one* of the possible applications: the maid.
Once you have understood the method used in this tutorial, you can modify the nanny with any clothing you like (not provided by the tutorial). Just be sure to choose a clothing made in one piece (not with separate top and bottom), and that the clothing is for elder female.

maybe using sim surgery ? does it works for NPC'S too ?...

silly me...I'll go check right away myself...LOL

This is a terrific tute, and I've followed it faithfully and had it work for the maid. Thankyou. :)

However, I am now trying to do the afBodybartender. Extracting the meshes was no problem, however, the txtr files have me stumped when I do a search with .*afBodybartender.*txtr

There don't seem to be any afBodybartender, or amBodybartender.txtr files -- no /Sims07 files, either, but when I do a search removing the .*txtr from the filename search there are files named afbodybartender_uniform_txmt along with the mesh components (gmdc etc).

Now when you load this in plugin view, then hit the "All references" tag, you get a list:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Bethgael/txtrwhat.jpg

My question is.... huh??? :D

Where do I go from here?

The male gives the same (or similar) list, so I'm presuming they're referencing the same texture? Or have a stepped wrong, somewhere?

marvine
13th Oct 2007, 9:38 AM
Yes, the "uu" prefix indicates that the files are used for both genders.

You can use the finder, type "uubodybartender" and you'll get all the references; then double-click the txtr line and the sims07.package will open on that file.
Erm... Well now you can just go to the sims07.package and find the uubodybartender files :)

Bethgael
13th Oct 2007, 11:44 PM
Great! Thankyou Marvine. :)

Now, just to check: I am presuming that means that I can't use a different texture for male and female bartenders, correct?

Be sure to clear the instance filter and click SET, otherwise you won't see anything. IIRC, this sounds like what's happening to you.

You mean you don't understand this step?

Though this tutorial is very good and well-explained, it is also quite old...

May I suggest a completely different solution to obtain the same result as this tutorial?
Start the game and open the CAS; create a family (I usually use the family name "_TEMP" to find them quickly) and create a full sim for each NPC that you want to replace; choose the body shape, the clothings, the accessories and so on.
Then save the family and close the game.

Now, before doing anything, backup your neighborhood. Do it and you won't regret for spending your time :)

Start SimPE, select Tools/Neighborhood/Neighborhood browser and choose the neighborhood where are the NPC and the new family.
Wait for the neighborhood to load, then choose Tools/Neighborhood/Sims Surgery.

Include in the list of sims the NPCs, and sort the list by family name (so that you have all the "replacements" all grouped under the family name "_TEMP").

Choose the replacement and set it as Archetipe Sim; then select from the list the NPC and set it as Patient Sim; and lastly hit "Surgery" and save the neighborhood.

When finished with all the NPCs, start the game and - first off - go to the family bin and delete the "_TEST" family (which is now useless).

Ah the ModFather himself... never thought i'd see the day i came ... umm nvm haha, yea i kinda got lost, its not that i dont understand it, its just i dont see what Targa was talking about, and yea the tutorial is kinda old but... anyway, your version i know.... this ive done... a few times. What im trying to do is replace all of MAXIS default NPC Clothes with whatever i choose to.

I know there's a clothes hack or something that prevents them from changing back to default when you edit them with SimPE, but hey my PC aint all that.. probably just the bag of chips without the chips haha, and i have enough GD custom stuff and too many hacks already, with everything up to Teen Stuff installed so just imagine, one of these fine days i'll upload my hood and show ya'll my trees galore! heh i can take a nap and it'll still be loading.

I found a program that does it, BUT it dosent work for all* custom made clothes.

I am attempting to work through this tutorial - all I want to do is edit the texture for the mail carrier (male and female). Is this the right tutorial for this?

I have gotten all the way to the steps where I make my own packages. Will I be making two separate packages - one for the GMDC, GMND, Cres, Shpe and a different one for the textures? (which would actually mean 4 packages since I am doing both male and female) Is this right?

Update: OK...since all I am doing is recoloring this same outfit, I don't need to make the mesh package - only the texture package. Trial and error is sooo much fun! Now I just have to figure out how to get my logo to look more clear - it keeps looking blurry and stretched in game...I am sure its all about positioning. Other than that, I managed to answer my own question above. Anyone have any tips for less blurry logos?

I was able to get most NPC clothing changed for my medieval sims.
Unfortunately, there is no tutorial available. It's been out for quite some time now, but no tutorial...hmmmmmm?

Anyway, I noticed that in order for the waiters and nannies clothing to work properly, I had to replace both the first as well as the 'alternate' with the same exact clothing option. I could not get the chef clothing choices to work. Instead it gave me the mesh of my choice, but the visual textures of the maxis original clothing; it looked weird. Also, there was no hostess option available. :(

It made it easy for me to alter the clothing, but you get a limited choice of NPCs to work with. I could not take the hats off of the newspaper carriers either. Overall, it was still worth my time and effort.

It made it easy for me to alter the clothing, but you get a limited choice of NPCs to work with. I could not take the hats off of the newspaper carriers either. Overall, it was still worth my time and effort.I just downloaded this program today and I've been fighting with it for a couple of hours. I find it extremely annoying, but most of that is my own fault because my dowloads folder is so disorganized. I can never find the clothes I want to use. :( Basically, you need to know the filename and subfolder directory of each file for each npc or you'll be totally lost (like me).

Also, it only has npcs up to Nightlife, so there is no option to change any of the BV or AL npcs.

Personally, I found it only used custom clothes and I could find no option to use maxis meshes at all.

I really, really wish there was an option to see a preview of what the clothing actually looked like on a sim, instead of just the texture files (if this option exists, I sure dind't find it). It would seem I'd have to load up the game and actually somehow find each npc in the game to see how the clothing looks on them.

Yeah, this program *really* needs a tutorial. The readme file that downloaded with it just appoligised "for the complete lack of documentation" and said the program was "The program is very easy to use" which either is a lie or I'm very stuid.

Maybe i phrased it wrong when i said simple, should of said it lacks and dosent seem to be supported, lol... seriously i said that? I googled the thing earlier and saw the post in the results and was thinking (when i saw the SIMPLE thing) which idiot wrote that?!?!? haha, oh that was funny... hmm, probably wrote that when i was sleepy like now, but anyway i really dont think that there's anything a tutorial could tell you more than the read me lol Ouch was that too harsh?

W/e sorry for the bump on the dead thread, had to laugh at myself....

@ Rosawyn... you should see mine, i have three downloads folders that i havent sorted out for a year yet, then again i did stop playing for a while... but no, dont worry the program is annoying too...

@BillySIMS139... i'll try that first and alternate thing you mentioned and see if i can get it to work, but my problem wasnt getting it to work, it was a mesh error or something... bleh cant remember...

I'm going to rebuild my neighborhood........ stress, all those 3000+ pine trees
Ya know i still dont see the resemblance :bunny: and a bunny... do you? i mean it looks like a snail/slug with ears...

If I wanted to, say, use Servos to replace ALL of my neighborhood's current NPC's, how would I got about doing that? If I try to make a Servo-Sim in CAS, I end up with weird looking Androids (also kind of cool, but not what I'm going for). I used this tutorial (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,10798.0.html) to make a clean custom neighborhood with NO NPCs at all... So I don't think I can use Sim Surgery? Does this mean I would have to go in and batch create NPCS and then replace them one by one with a teleporter??

Thanks for your help :bunny:

I seem to be having trouble with opening the package file. I'm using my own file (replacing original Teen male and female newspaper delivery since the Moomaid is no longer available for download). I have opened the file as described in the first part of the tuturial but the Geometric Data Container isn't showing up in the left corner of the screen as shown in screenshot 1. Instead I see the following:
3D ID Referencing File (3IDR) (1)
Binary INdex (BINX) (1)
Directory of Compressed Files (CLST) (1)
Materials Definition (TXMT) (1)
Property Set (GZPS) (1)
Text Lists (STR#) (1)
Texture Image (TXTR) (2)

Your tuturial does not specify how or where to open the file. I know I'm reading it, but I am soooo confused and I fear that I may be doing something wrong opening the file, but I'm lost. What's going on?

Have you tried the Sim Boutique Clothingrack by christianlov?
I'm not playing the game at the moment but I'm thinking it can change hairstyles and makeup. :)

I found a hack by alkaloid. The clothing rack doesn't work for work clothes, it's a great object though, I use it for other things.

Read about it before using it.

Can anyone tell me what to do with the bump textures? I made a beautiful medieval maid, but my true goal was to do the mail carrier and paper boy since I see them the most. Is there a certain way I can/should edit them in photoshop for my replacement file? Or can I delete them from the original file?

Thanks

PS ok, I found out that 'bump maps' are the same as 'normal maps' (well according to the wiki) so I got the normal maps from the custom clothes I used. All done witih the mail carrier and the paper boy - now to try them out!

Hello. Please don't criticize me for this, but I was wondering if there was a way to permanently delete certain npcs and objects so that they do not ever show up in the game? I have all the eps except pets. My knowledge of computers is pretty good, however, I have not ever created a game mod or hack. The most I have done for changing anything in the game is hair color and skin color. I have checked out some of the tutorials on here, but have not found anything that specifically shows how to permanently delete certain npcs.

Thanks :)

Which NPCs and why?
If it's because of their face/hair/clothing, that can be changed. If it's their job altogether, then there are certain things you might be able to do so that they don't "visit".

I recently found out that it is possible to make a playable sim a townie, with the teleport shrub. The teleport shrub is *very* convenient.

But is there any way to make the playable into an NPC?? I mean if I become tired of my playable, can he find a new mission as a postman, or a waiter?? or grocery van driver?
Because it would be fun.
I mean replacing the npc with a playable sim, not just replacing the mesh with another mesh.
