This is a Maxis Recolour which means that it is a recolour of an item that already exists in your game. Please check the Expansion pack requirements to see which game pack it recolours.
This is a new mesh, and means that it's a brand new self contained object that usually does not require a specific Expansion pack (although this is possible depending on the type). It may have Recolours hosted on MTS2 - check the sidebar.
This is a new mesh recolour, and means that you will need to download the particular mesh itself in order for this to show up in your game. See the Meshes Needed section or read the text for more information.
*COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with World Adventures as well as the base game.
Here, for all you salty dogs and sons of sea cooks, is the pirate hat from The Sims 2 converted for The Sims 3.
It's enabled for men and women of all ages from Teen to Elder, and is recolourable and repatternable to a fair extent, though the colour and pattern from the original textures will always show through. You can still do quite a bit by tinting it lightly, and a few patterns will show up well.
It's found in the Accessories panel in Create a Sim, under the Earrings section.
Technical issues: This hat was originally a hat hair with one specific hair style attached to it. I separated the hat from the hair and adjusted the mesh so that it can be worn as an accessory over a hair style of your choice. However, you will of course be restricted to a smallish choice of hairstyles: those that are fairly flat and close to the head.
I've tested it with all of the hairstyles that came with the TS3 base game for both men and women, and most of them work well with it, with little to no clipping through the hat, and what clipping there was, was only on the inside in the lower crown area where it's not too noticeable, rather than through the brim or upper crown (except for the beehive and the Mohican!). Be aware that you can NOT use this hat successfully with the sort of big hair that many custom hair creators make!
For a look in-game, Mr and Mrs Landgraab's choice of apparel gives us an idea as to the origins of how they got all their money:
And, looks like Mrs Crumplebottom is also partial to a bit of high seas adventure:
