View Full Version : Black prism-shaped "poles" and no sim/mirror in CAS

Alright. I've searched and searched thinking someone HAD to have had the same problem somewhere. No. I recently upgraded my video card from a nvidia 5200 to a ge-force 6600. I have gone through about 3-4 different drive updates to possibly locate the one that is not working for me. All of them leave me with the same problem. When I load CAS, I see no sim standing there, and I see no mirror or the circular platform that is usually there. I'm at a loss for what it could be. I'm about thisclose to taking the video card back and making do with the 5200 which would be unfortunate, because I have seen a significant difference in the game otherwise.

Some other info that may help? I was playing Age of Empires III which worked fine on the 5200 but crashed while playing higher settings with the 6600. I ended up getting a new power supply unit (I previously had a 250W and the min req. for the 6600 was 300--I now have a 400W). Everything is running fine. Everything but the MAJOR issue of no sim in CAS. I can't create families. :( I hope someone has an idea of what's going on or can help push me in a different direction. No, it's not custom content. I had absolutely no problems with anything until changing my video card. At this point, I rolled back to the 78.01 driver. It was the only one that didn't put those funky looking black lines in my neighborhood view. I tried the newest one--82.12 and also tried rolling to 81.98. ugh

Oh, I'm not sure if this would matter, but the only mods I have made were the ones to put bumps on my 5200 (which originally did not) and also fixed a file for those shortcuts for cheats (i.e.--rotate 45). If anyone has the original files for those, I would be most grateful. I'm willing to try anything!

Did you download any custom CAS scenes? If not, try restoring your objects.package file.

I made my own custom CAS. Everything shows up except a painting in the background (also a custom content file). Other than that, I didn't change anything with the mirror etc. What would restoring the objects.package file do?

Replacing the objects.package file will repair any game object files which are broken.... but if you have a custom CAS restore the Maxis one and try again.

Not everything is in objects.package, but alot is.

and how would I replace the objects.package file? I'm not sure I'm following exactly what it is. And will I be able to replace my CAS again? I just had the cas file in my downloads, so that was easy to remove.

**EDIT**
Okay, CAS screen working properly after taking out custom one. However, I've got another problem. I was viewing some one of my recently made shirts and went to pair pants with it, and all the outfits I changed to looked like it had strings coming from it. I've included a pic to help better show what I mean. I'm not sure it's only dealing with the sims. As I mentioned before, it has caused slow down and crashes in another game. I just wasn't sure if someone would be able to help me locate the problem with the card or my comp settings.

Hmmm, I've seen this before... try using some different graphics drivers.

yup, tried different drivers. I looked through both of these threads already. I just have no idea. I've basically come to the conclusion this card is going back to the store and I'm going to save for a better one that doesn't have as many people having probs with it. Everyone that said they had a 5200 (my previous card) had reported no errors. Almost everyone with 6600 had something up. Sucks, but I'll live. Will give me more time to do my research. :) Thanks so much for helping though!!!!!

One more thing--how do you restore the objects.package file? I did a search through these forums and came up with nothing. ??? In any case, if I can take something from this whole mess, maybe that would be one thing. :)
