Very quick question: I am trying to keep my downloads folder from getting seriously overbloated (well, at least 'shopping' for Sims is not overbloating my credit card!) and I just need to know if there is any real advantage to retaining diagonal meshes rather than using the cheat to place these items on the diagonal?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, you need those meshes because the object will turn back into whatever it was cloned from when you use the 45Degree cheat.

Thank you for your very quick response julianarosalia (what a pretty name!). However your answer gives rise to another question. If this is so, why does it not happen with items which have no diagonal mesh, e.g. counters etc? Please understand, I am not questioning your advice, just wanting to futher understand the intricasies of Sims 2 content.

Curtains and windows are just "special" - I'm not exactly sure why, I'm sure there is logic behind it; for whatever reason they're different from other stuff.
