View Full Version : buying objects on non-owned community lots

Is there a way to make objects on a community lot that is not owned by a playable sim or townie buyable? I made a beautiful mall with all types of neat stores and don't really want one of my sims to own it but want them to be able to purchase items I've placed in the stores.

I think everything you put on the display shelvs become buyable when returning to the lot with your sims.

You cannot buy them even if you own the lot, you can only sell. Didn't realise that until yesterday and it's a pity because I suck at running businesses but I enjoy sending my sims out for stuff.

Create a sim you never plan to play. Have that sim buy the business, hire the needed employees, then go home. (Or just save on the lot if you only have one business.) Then your other sims can go buy stuff. You will need to switch to your owner sim to do renovations but otherwise that sim can be considered a townie who happens to live in a lot. The owner and all the employees show up every time a playable sim visits the lot. (Which is literally murder to a vampire sim who gets called in during the day more than once before playing his lot again.)

That is true for restaurants and cafes, and bars but nor for OFB shelves type of shops. Basically, just the stuff that's enabled by default as community shopping and needs an NPC to run. You just cannot buy anything off the OFB shelves and the decrachill.

ACTUALLY. There's an "Add to Shopping Bag" option for items on OFB shelves. It worked when my sim went to a farmers market downtown (using simwardrobes packaged fruits) So you can buy things that are on decra-chill and OFB shelves like CC. Although with frillen's usable shampoo bottles (on OMSPs), you can't use them on unowned businesses, and I suppose you'd have to have someone own the business and set the price, so it won't become usable, and it seems tedious unless there's a "set price for type" option which is a life saver in my opinion.

I actually tried with the owner of the business to buy the Maxis celebrations cakes from the decrachill, and those same cakes with some playable sims on the same community business lot and it was as if they weren't there. Not even the view option showed up, let alone add to shopping bag. When I played the lot as the owner, other sims could buy them, but when I played with other sims, nobody could. Maybe simwardrobe's fruits are hacked differently.

Possibly. But maybe it's buyable if it's crafted only I suppose? I think you can buy toys, robots, bakery items (the bakeries actually work correctly,) etc. if you wanted to. Also, sims can buy Items like radios, computers and all those other shenanigans So maybe I am wrong. If anyone is willing to post screenshots of the problem using printscreen (not using C while playing) or something please do, I would like to see what's happening because I never get this problem. And did I mention it has to be marked for sale?

They were certainly marked for sale because they could be bought by other sims when playing the lot.

First of all, thank everyone for their advice. This is exactly what i did with my grocery store. i just wanted to make sure I wasn't making things more difficult for myself. Thanks!

Just an update on this particular issue. Items that are buyable by default in OFB do NOT necessarily remain buyable once a playable sim buys the store. That sim, as the shop owner, has to mark items for sale - even things like:
Clothes racks
Freezers
Food displays
Etc.
Once you set them as buyable, another playable sim CAN go into the store and make purchases correctly. This was a major issue for my sim-owned salon. I wanted to buy a dress and the option was gone (only try-on was available) until I figured this out recently.

Well, of course things that are going to be sold need to be marked for sale... And things like windows and doors that can be purchased more cheaply in the wholesale tab should NOT be purchased from it or your sims will buy them as well and you will have to go back and rebuild.

That's easily solved. You just use the 'for sale' tool to toggle them to 'not for sale'.

Haha, it's very amusing, I'd love to see that :)
Reminds me of how my sim ran a real estate business, until the day she accidentally sold the deed to the lot she ran it on.

I was reading something recently that indicated that businesses can have negative rankings (-1 through -5 I think?) and between that and what your sim did, I am nearly inspired to make a "total business failure" sim!

Uh, yeah. Six years and running with ambiguous information - according to your earlier post, there was no mention of marking things for sale. Setting a playable as a pseudo-townie owning a shop does not by default set anything for sale. A naive Sim player wouldn't necessarily glean that things must be set for sale manually and that goes for anything default, such as freezers, etc. Consequently, I tried to provide clarification for the Google searchers among us.
I responded to this thread 6 years after the fact because I thought the information would be helpful to current Sims 2 users who wish to go shopping and actually make a purchase of custom content.
My Sim daughter and her husband run a completely custom thrift shop from GOS and it works great with playables making custom purchases. Other mods prevent real sales from happening by browsing playables, unnecessarily, but if I wish for them to buy, they can and it properly saves in their inventory.
Handy, if you want someone to buy an edible chocolate gift, for example.
Why anyone would set windows/doors for sale is beyond me, anyway.
No need to run from a zombie thread with relevant information, is there? Stick around and enjoy the brain attacks because that's how zombies roll, LOL. Mine are put into a facility for the mentally retarded because, after all, they've eaten all the brains.
Working on my post count...I hope to make it up to 12 by 2022.

You can definitely have a negative ranking for a business. One of my Sims (OK, it was Zatreia Ya-Telehixia) ran a rather bad wall light shop. She reached -2 before deciding this was maybe the wrong sector of the market for her...
