I have a three generation family and the sims kid just turned into a child and her hair is black. I thought she had brown hair like her mother and she definetly did not have her dad's red hair. This brought on the question about sims genes. Do sims get genes from there grandeparents? 'cause her grandfather has black hair too.

And yes, the game looks at former generations too. So the kid might have inhareted the black hair from his/her grandfather.

BrownEyedGirl1987, your sim got her black hair from her grandfather. Black and brown (and blond and red) are equally dominant -- a sim has an equal chance of getting either hair colour and carrying the other as a recessive. Your sim's mother showed brown hair, but still carried a black haired gene recessively, passing it on to her daughter.

Sims do get genes from grandparents, great-grandparents etc., it all depends on what genes they inherrited -- I've had a blond gene work its way down through 5 generations (gen 1 - blond, gen 2 - black, gen 3 - black, gen 4 - brown, gen 5 - blond).

Each sim has two genes for hair colour and two genes for eye colour -- if they're a townie/NPC or a sim made in CAS you did not make from two other sims, their dominant (the gene which shows) and recessive (the gene which is hidden) genes are the same. If they're born in-game or made in CAS from two parents, they inherit one gene for hair and eye from each parent. What they get depends on both what the parents show, and what their recessives are.

Example: Sim A has brown-haired and blond-haired parents (and thus shows brown hair). Sim B has black-haired and red-haired parents (and thus shows black hair). If they have a child they could have black, brown, red or blond hair as the parents carry genes for all four hair colours.

thank you katya stevans, I know how genes work I was just wondoring if they were in the game 'cause it had never happened to me before.
