So, I got struck with one hell of a glitch and briefly wanted to throw in the towel, but instead I just worked around it as well as I could... Basically, my whole lot sunk into the ground, and could not be fixed... So, I'm renaming Magnolia Mound Plantation into Perdu Plantation. :wtf: If you spot the cliff walls in the background, that's why... Big thanks to the Funke family for taking the plunge.
Bloopers
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/GloamingMerle/R2Bloopers.jpg
It all started with a strange little edge of my lot that wouldn't even out.. I figured, no big deal, when I move it onto a bigger plot for landscaping, I'll iron it out... It went down hill from there. Enough with the puns! I don't consider this a bonus pic and I hope you judges don't either, it's more of a looksee at what happened.

1st Floor
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/GloamingMerle/R21stFloor.jpg
So, where do those pesky split stairs lead to anyway? There weren't any floor plans of it, but apparently they just lead to the attic. I didn't add a shot of that because there's nothing in the attic, and there's no floor plan for comparison anyway. It's ironic really, especially with all the trouble those stairs caused. I even had to omit a door due to the warped walls. :faceslap:

Kitchen
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/GloamingMerle/R2Kitchen.jpg
Really tiny kitchen... and I thought the one from my first house was small, sheesh.
Bathroom
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/GloamingMerle/R2Bathroom.jpg
This bathroom couldn't get more awkward if it tried. Originally, when the house was built there was an outhouse, but then some plumbing was eventually installed. I'm guessing they literally converted a closet into a bathroom. So, where's the tub then? I'll show you.
Bedroom
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/GloamingMerle/R2MasterBedroom.jpg
Yeah, a tub in the master bedroom... but why? Well, I seem to recall that in the olden days, some people actually did keep tubs in their bedrooms if they were wealthy enough.. Usually near a fireplace so that there wasn't a long distance between the water heater and tub. :giggler:

Creole Tomato Garden Bonus Pic
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/GloamingMerle/R2Garden.jpg
Obviously the Sims is lacking sugar cane, so I figured tomatoes would be the next best thing! If I had to count what I liked about Summer on one hand, tomatoes would be probably be number one... I reaaaally hate summer, but there's nothing quite like a perfectly ripe tomato. Mmmmm!
Oh, almost forgot! I used 3 pieces of CC.

Beautiful entries everyone. Dantes, I love that little bar canopy, I've never seen or thought of that before.
Seeing everyone else's entries I think I might've gone a bit off track with the decor :faceslap: I've gone for kinda quaint country when I think I should've been trying for something more opulent. The deep south is completely foreign to me, everything I know about it comes from True Blood  so, yeah, I pretty much took inspiration from Sookie's house for the decor. I've gone for a small plantation though, not one of the massive ones, I'm hoping there was such a thing as less well off plantation owners:lol: Unfortunately RL has kinda got in the way so I'll be lucky to get the 2 rooms that are left and the landscaping finished on time and definitely won't be able to redecorate. (It's 10pm here so I really need to have it finished before bed to make the deadline). Better get to it!

Living in the south, I can tell you that plantation houses had a vast array of interior design styles. While often large plantations did have opulent furnishings, many smaller plantation houses would have what we today consider country style. Often the victorian and country styles were mixed together, along with several other styles. So basically as long as you don't go ultra modern, most things with an older feel to the style will work in a plantation.

Thanks for puting my mind at ease Sookielee :) You must get a lot of inspiration for building with all those fabulous buildings in your area. I really miss that about living in London: there's not many inspiring residential buildings in Nevada, at least I haven't come across many. I definitely want to visit the south before I leave America and after this I'll definitely be stopping at some plantations for a sneaky peek :p
I've finished now, just gotta choose the pictures and upload them. TBH, it's a bit of a rush job, especially the landscaping but in the end it was a choice between a rushed entry and no entry :( I'm annoyed with myself for dilly-dallying over picking a plan now, didn't leave myself any time for distractions which unfortunately cropped up. Oh well, I'll be back hopefully within the hour with my pics.

Are we nearly there yet with the entries? - I am being entirely selfish in not wanting an extension as I can't wait to find out what the next round is going to be :-)

Well this round was a bit of a disaster. First my floor plan didn't work since I couldn't get the stairs to work properly, so I picked another one, did all the exterior then most of the interior. Opened up the game this morning only to find that the game hadn't saved. :wtf: So I lost the whole interior and most of the exterior. I've tried to make the outside look as okay as possible (from the front at least), but I just don't have the time (or the energy) to finish the rest off. So it's basically just an empty house except for the room with the colour in. I hope I don't loose too many points, although to be honest I don't mind if I do. I'm just looking forward to the next round now lol.

Well, i'm done with the contest....... :( I'm sorry i'm saying this so late but i was really hoping i would get it together by now, but the plan gave me hell, when i tried switching, the other plan didn't work either, so when i went back to the old one, i was still having some major issues.
But check this. I'm not quitting the contest cause of the plan. My game won't start up! I think it's because of that new patch everyone's complaining about. I installed it and poof... All is lost. I am currently reinstalling all games and trying to piece it all together, but i don't remember if i backed up the saved games so... Yeah...
Three day's work down the drain... :(

The original plans can be found here: http://www.houseplansandmore.com/homeplans/houseplan020D-0325.aspx
Whilst the Exterior looks slightly newer (to match the plans) I have tried to maintain an old, slightly worn country feel throughout to give the impression this house has been around for a long while just like the plantations.
http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Build%20to%20Plan/StreetView-2.jpgAs discussed previously, the exterior colour has been toned down.

I used the following CC:
1x Foundation paint
1x rocking chair (yeah, could've done without it but I liked it so meh :P
1x roof recolour
Total of 3 CC
Edit: Almost cmpletely forgot about th window above the front door. That's 4 bits of CC alltogether.
The "shower" is not CC, it's just a couple o fog emitters set to 'showerfx' 'cauae I wanted the look of a custom shower without taking the hit for CC ;)
Finally! Phew....roll on the next round

What in the--... I just came to check in on everyone's progress and noticed that the shutters aren't showing up on most of my windows even though they were there. argh.. It's only showing up on one of the windows. What the heck is up with that? I don't have time to fix it and I only just noticed. Only one window is showing its shutters. :\
Oy, talk about bad luck... Sinking plantations, invisible shutters... they were such nice green shutters too. *sigh*

28th Sep 2010, 03:31 PM
Wow... I feel hesitant closing down the contest. There's still about an hour and a half until it closes, but we only have 8 out of the 12 contestants. I'd hate to leave behind the other contestants. They'll be able to pick up with the next round, but that'll be a lot of points they'll miss out on. Should I extend the deadline for a day or two? It also feels like a lot of the entrants who submitted had trouble with their houses, too. Oh, missroxor, you might want to mention what you did about the shower in your pic. It's obvious it's not a game shower, so some of the judges might think it's CC that you didn't put down.
So many technical issues due to that stupid patch. I just finally patched myself, since the EGC finally updated so I could continue to play with it in place. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be causing me any problems. Of course, the Launcher borked and only updated the base game and Ambitions, completely forgetting WA and HELS. I had to go and get the Patch Downloader so I could get the missing patches.
heaven
28th Sep 2010, 03:39 PM
Yes, same thing happened with me. When I patched, it only patched the base game and left everything else on it's own and the launcher refused to cooperate. I had to manually patch all the others. For those who haven't patched yet, maybe wait until after the contest. :giggler: I don't think that anything that was updated this time around is building related and you can probably get by with waiting.
As for the deadline, 8 out of 12 is not even 75%. Maybe another 24 hours? This way, people do have time to make some changes if they would like and those who haven't got their entries in yet have a chance to get them there.
Also, for any one who has smaller pictures, please try to retake them (or load them in the original size if you resized), at the very least the floorplans. I am having some issues with some of the floorplan shots which makes judging hard.
LifesLover
28th Sep 2010, 03:44 PM
Well, the patch downloader really helped cut down on the stress of manually patching it myself.
Yes, I'm going to extend the deadline. I'm hesitant about it because I feel like the contest is doing such a stop and start kind of thing, but with 4 people missing and others rushing to get it in, I feel it's in the best interest of everyone if I just extend it for a day or two. This will also be of benefit to me, though, so... I'm kind of looped out on drugs right now, so I can barely think straight, let alone judge.
So, the new deadline is Thursday, 12:00 p.m. my time. So, basically, in about 49 hours it'll be over. I hope that's enough time for everyone else.
wickedblue
28th Sep 2010, 03:44 PM
heaven_sent, in order to even get my plans here, I had to reduce it to like 60% so I could see it all to snip it, so if I'm one of those you need to resize let me know, though I have no idea how I would go about that. They are linked if that helps at all?

Thank you!! I totally respect deadlines but I just could not get my game working until this morning. I reloaded the game (+2 eps) four times, did full maintenance on my pc (cleaned registry, refrag, deleted unused programs and short cuts, etc) checked all my downloads and cc, went on the website for help (that was a waste of time), etc to no avail but last night I manually loaded the patches individually (sim programs has them --there's been 20 in case anyone's curious) and I got it working at 9am this morning and immediately started on the house. I felt like this  until I just read you extended it to Thursday. Thank you so much. :)

I'd like to shamelessly pimp for technical points and point out that the top section of the roof is sitting on a dummy level and the bottom section is made up of different sections of a straight sloped and hipped roof so I could get the correct angles.
I used 4 pieces of CC. The roof recolor, the pattern on the porch and siding, the front door, and the glass doors.

For anyone who needs them: Manual Patches (http://nene.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:TS3_Patching:Patch_Download/Current). Obviously, before you use them, make sure that you read how to patch and check your region code and so forth.

Or try the Patch Downloader (http://nene.modthesims.info/download.php?t=409829) in case you just don't want to deal with doing it on your own.
Oh, aUserName, don't forget to write down your CC count, whether you have any or none at all. If you don't mention it, we'll assume that you used all of it.

For anyone having problems with the shutters showing up when the roof is up: If you uncheck hide objects under game options it should solve the problem. They work like curtains, so they are hidden when you have the roof up you are technically on another floor.

Thanks Lifeslover, I see I forgot my CC count I'll edit it.
About the sizing issue. Would people prefer if I shrunk my photos? Because the size annoys me, but I was afraid too make them to small to see the details.

Looks like you can post now, fragglerocks. I heard about the posting problems, apparently. The contest will end at 12:00 p.m. my time, in about 48 hours exactly. So whatever 48 hours from now is where you are is when it'll end. If you can't do it til Monday, I'm sure we'll all be glad to wait for the scores.
Thanks for the heads up, Sookielee, I wondered what that hide objects thing was.
Your pictures are fine. They'll be nice and big for the judges.

28th Sep 2010, 05:35 PM
Oh, missroxor, you might want to mention what you did about the shower in your pic. It's obvious it's not a game shower, so some of the judges might think it's CC that you didn't put down.
There's actually no shower there, I didn't wanna take the CC hit for it (as far as I'm concerned, backless showers should come as standard with the game), I chose the pic of the sim just stood there in her bikini like that 'cause I thought it made it kinda obvious, lol. Maybe it worked better than I thought
The "shower" is not CC, it's just a couple of fog emitters set to 'showerfx'. Hell, the upstairs shower is just an empty tiled room  If the power of suggestion is not allowed please let me know ;)
I've updated my entry to reflect this.
PS if you/judges need proof that it's not CC please note how the "shower" remained on despite the fact that the inhabitant is sat on the rocking chair in the porch.
LifesLover
28th Sep 2010, 05:38 PM
No, I knew it was the fog emitters doing it. I thought it very clever. I just wanted to make sure you mentioned that it wasn't CC, so you wouldn't take a hit there with any judges that might not be able to tell.

28th Sep 2010, 05:52 PM
Well, lucky for all of us who have had technical difficulties to get a little extra time. Sounds like I didn't even get the worst of the bad luck this round, not even close, but I still think I win for the STRANGEST bad luck. Does anyone know how to fix sunken lots or have any experience with them? When I used the Flatten Lot button, it just raised the terrain all around the house, so then I tried again with constrainfloorelevation false, and it raised the walls, made my foundation and split stairs go crazy, and left all of my objects underground. I don't have my heart set on fixing it, as I've already mostly accepted my buggy lot for what it is, but I was curious if anyone had suggestions because otherwise it means the house will go to waste after the contest.
Hopefully the mystery of the vanishing shutters won't be too difficult to solve by comparison (I should be able to rectify that rather quickly once I get home). Though it's kinda funny they managed to remain on ONE window.
Good luck everyone. There's so many fantastic builders in this challenge... I'm finding that I do so much better when I build organically. :D

28th Sep 2010, 06:06 PM
Concerning the shower discussion, I had a bit of dilemma with that one myself. It was fairly obvious by the plans that I could not use a game shower so I used the backless shower. I pondered far longer than I should have if I could get away with just doing an empty tiled room, since it doesn't show in any of my pictures anyway, except for the overhead. In the end, I thought it better to take the hit for the CC rather than take a hit for it not being accurate but I'm still not sure.
I'd really rather just take it out, redo the overhead shot and take that off my list. I am going to do some more work on the living room anyway, because I'm still not really satisfied with it, so the overhead will need to be redone anyway.
What do you think?
sandymdh
28th Sep 2010, 06:12 PM
I have the standard game corner shower in mine as I also didn't want to use an extra cc point. I was trying so hard to get accurate looking windows and doors I'd already used 5 up on them. The showers don't look right at all. Why no backless shower EA????!!!!! For those of us who have finished any chance of a sneaky hint as to the next round?
LifesLover
28th Sep 2010, 06:12 PM
I don't mind if there's no actual shower in the shower thing-y: if you go to upload your house later on, just make sure to put it back so it's actually usable. Don't take needless CC hits.
A sneaky hint? LOL, well, hmmm... the best I can do is tell you that we're going back in time, if you haven't already noticed. Don't get too curious, okay? Not that knowing is all that bad, either.

OMG, I thought I would go nuts trying to get my game running again...but a sunken house! I wouldn't know where to begin with that. An expert like QBuilderz might know. Good luck with that and the shutters.
Yes, the house entries are very good. Building from floor plans is different. I usually just pick a lot size, open it and see where it takes me.
Mercifully, the deadline was extended to give those with tech problems a chance. It also gives those who finished a chance to go back and tweak details or make any corrections if they want.
I wish my house looked like some of the entries. (especially the interiors)
Good luck to everyone. :)

Awesome, LifesLover, thank you for saying you didn't care. I need that CC point in the living room to accomplish what I want. :D
I am glad that the deadline is extended too as I really want to work on mine a bit more and didn't have any time to get it done this morning. The only technical problem I seem to be having is that my game doesn't want to save without crashing, so if I can finish it in one sitting, I'm good to go and I hope I can figure out the issue before the next round.

I'm sure I've seen threads about the sunken house issue before so I did a search and found these:
http://nene.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=346395
This sounds pretty promising: I just CFE and leveled the floor, then I use the hammer to destroy everything, then hit undo to bring them back...
I do that because the house will then bring all objects back to floor level...
You do have to redo the roof though...
Houses with foundations are jacked up however... Foundations with CFE turns into full height walls after you level the floor
Maybe you could just reset the foundation to foundation level and then try the hammer thing?
I haven't read through all the posts so maybe there's a better explanation in there.
Edit: Yeah, I'm hoping that with this extension I can fix my landscaping, it's pretty pathetic right now  just not sure when I'll get the time to get back on the simming pc. Thanks LL
Edit2: Just deleted the second link, I didn't realise how old it is, must be for TS2, didn't know they had the same problem
GloamingMerle
28th Sep 2010, 07:07 PM
Thanks missroxor.. I did see that post, but I got the impression that the sunken/sloped part wasn't as extreme as what I was experiencing. I mean, can the hammer reach stuff that's completely underground? If you look at my bloopers, you can see that it's so sunken that the street is almost level with the top of the roof. When I did flatten it with CFE, all my objects were still WAY down below. :\
I guess it's worth a shot to see if the hammer will effect objects underground so long as they're technically still on the same "level" according to the game. If we're talking about the original lot with the slope problem at the edge.... I had already tried all those methods for flattening it to no avail. :\
Last time I had a problem with uneven terrain near the egde, moving it onto a larger lot and leveling it out had worked.. I'm at a loss as to how this stuff gets started in the first place because I made a perfectly flat world solely for building to avoid this nonsense. :faceslap:

GloamingMerle: I have read on several sites about people having the same issue with sunken/raised lots. The only solution I have seen was to activate CFE false level the lot and sledgehammer everything and hit undo. (creating a basement to get to some of the hard to reach things)
Neighborly Sims 3 (http://www.flyingacres.com/NeighborlySims3/showthread.php?tid=1763) has an excellent tutorial/explanation on how to fix the issue of some Land Configuration problems that occur with Ambitions.
The hide objects feature under game options prevents the game from rendering anything that is inside a building if you are outside (hence why when turned on there is nothing can be seen through windows. It also only allows the rendering of objects on the current floor your sims is on, so if you have a 2 story house with a balcony, when you look down to the second floor, it is empty. For many computers the default is to hide objects.

Oooh, thanks so much for that link... It definitely has the most concise information on how to fix this particular problem that I've seen, and for that reason it is going into my bookmarks. Granted, I haven't seen a lot of actual information on the problem. Searching for keywords usually resulted in that one help post on MTS, and a smorgasbord of "How to make sunken rooms" links. :faceslap:

I'm having the same problem all over again. I tested create a style by recoloring a sofa on the empty lot before I started building and it was fine. I laid out the foundation for the house and built the walls for levels 1 & 2. since the garage is attached to the house and has a small platform and stairs into the house, I placed 2nd story walls over the garage and did cfe to create a split level with the second story of the garage being the constrained level and as the rest of the house was on a foundation the garage was even with every thing else and I could put my garage doors in. I begin decorating and go into create a style and it goes into that loop again! ARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!
I was futzing with cfe a lot trying to create the split level stairs in the house but was really having no luck with that as they are on a foundation and adjacent to walls that are part of the split level garage. I don't know if I'm CFEing too much, not saving often enough, or if my game is just borked but this is driving me nuts! I will try something else to see if it is my game or me or this house. Has anyone had something like this happen?

How do you get it out of the loop?
It is the less bad since I reinstalled everything, except the last patch (it caused me more of problems which it settled me). I often back up. And for the looping, i have to find nothing still. I leave, simply. Anyway the game freeze most leave of time.
I look for new drivers for my graphics card at present. The 240 GT is not recognized by the game. That could be a part of the problem.
I recommend you the use of Dashbord also. It is an indispensable tool when we have many CC.

Did you get rid of any mods that were incompatible with the latest patch? When I did, I had to update my EGC and I had to get rid of buzzler's mods and redownload them since the Custom Launcher told me they were incompatible. I never would have figured that out otherwise.

Well, one of my pets had surgery today to remove a growth, and she did just fine with the surgery, but during that the vet found that she had numerous tumors throughout her abdomen that nothing could be done about. Needless to say, I'm pretty bummed, and the last thing I feel like worrying about is a building contest.

I don't want to be too hasty about dropping out actually... So, I'm not going to fix the problems in my entry for this round, but for the time being still consider me in the challenge. I probably won't continue, but for now I'm not going to officially drop out. In a few days, I may find that working on this as a way to occupy my mind, but for the time being I don't really have the heart. I'll make sure to let you know before the end of round 3 what my decision is. I remember dusica saying that he/she had game problems much like others. dusica and Dragonball161 have until Friday afternoon, my time (it's approximately 8:40 p.m. where I am right now so in about... 20 hours or so), to inform me as to whether they plan or can finish their R2 entries. If they do, I'll extend the contest until Sunday. If they cannot, R2 will close in about 20 hours, so I suggest fixing anything you want fixing now while there's still time left.

Since I had to take out my cc to start the game up again (though I think the patch was my problem), I'll leave my mods folder out of the game until this contest is over. One thing i noticed in this challenge is that the EA curtain selection in the game and EPs is from hunger. There are a few in the sets (i,e., Gothic) that are okay.
I can't wait for the stage tool (among other build stuff) in Late Night. And I would love a spiral staircase as well. The houses all look very good and I think the bonus color was used very well by everyone.

Crazy colors, odd angles, they're all just a part of the vast array of Victorian houses. Find a plan that embodies Victorian style and attempt to recreate it within the Sims 3! Like the last round, you may build off of an actual Victorian house, if the floor plans are available, or you can find floor plans like the other rounds.
Bonus Category
This round, the bonus category is to create a garden towards the back of the lot that embodies privacy. Can you create a secluded area for your Sims that will let them be one with nature? Be creative! Make a maze, or a water feature, do something that stretches your mind!
Deadline
I'm going to err on the side of caution and just make this a longer deadline. Since there were so many problems last round, let's hope they don't travel with us into this round. Well, I think I have the plan I'm gonna go with. I really wanted to do British Victorian rather than American but it's surprisingly difficult to find plans except for massive mansions that would just take too long to build (I only have a couple of days since I have house guests arriving soon). So I found this plan (http://www.1900s.org.uk/1900s-house-plans.htm) which seems small enough to complete within the time limit. I've only just noticed the bonus round....not quite sure how I'll work it into my plans since I want to stick as close as possible to my poor, working class plans but I'll try to think of something :)
I'm currently watching The Young Victoria on Stars to gee me up for this round

So... since I have no life (haha... kidding... just had nothing to do today), I already finished this round's house.
I might change it later though... I'm not happy with the windows.
The plans say that there should be a basement. But there are no stairs marked to that basement. So I just used regular foundation.
I figured it would be safer to stick to what's in the actual floorplans than what's in the description.
I actually didn't use a single piece of CC this round.

3rd Oct 2010, 11:46 AM
yeah, I think pigeons coops (we call them doo huts in Scotland) was about as close to nature as working class brits got in the Victorian era. I had a stab at that particular house and it's a bit of a pain in the arse. If you read the site it's from they actually mention things that aren't on the plan like how the scullery is actually stepped down from the rest of the house....I tried to incorporate that but it's just not possible, even with CFE because of where the doors and stuff are. Might have to either miss out the extra bits or try another plan. I did find another British plan but I don't like it as much.
If you're still lookin for British versions I found typing victorian plans etc into google was no use but phrases like 'detached victorian plans, UK' and 'period terraced house plans, UK' were slightly more successful.
Edit: Just had a look at your profile to see if you're actually from the UK or just interested in the architecture...I used to live just down the road from you :p 'bout 15 miles outside King's Lynn (don't worry, I wasn't a local...I only have 10 fingers and 10 toes  )

As a judge, I don't want to take floorplans a contestant would want to do. Just say the word and I will find another one! (Although I might still build it for my CAW hood).

I am so sorry to hear that you are dropping out, jewaukeela. Of course, if you're not having fun, I understand why you'd want to drop out. The contest is about having fun and learning something new, so if you're not having fun then you're not having fun. We'll miss you. I hope you'll still follow along with the contest, and feel free to post if you desire. I won't take your name off the contestants list, so if you decide later on to come back and build again, you can just pick back up with us. Thanks for joining!
Okay, guys, sorry for the disappearance yesterday. I'm going to be updating the round 3 post and the front page. Wow, serraphinn, you work fast.

The original plans can be found here: http://www.1900s.org.uk/1900s-house-plans.htm
:alarm:
Please be aware that these plans have been drawn up by a former resident of the house and he has used terms which were common in the 1800/1900s which may lead to some confusion over which room is which:
Parlour - At first glance I assumed this was the living room but in Victorian times (in Britain at least) this was a kind of a formal room only used on special occasions, when guests came round or on Sundays. I guess nowadays it would be called a reception room (I wouldn’t know, I’ve never lived in a house big enough to have one of those, lol)
Kitchen and Scullery - The former resident of the house says this of the houses in the area, “The word 'kitchen' has changed its meaning over the years. In the early 1900s when I was a child on the working class Huxley Estate, the kitchen was where the family really lived, ate, worked and played. The scullery was where the food preparation, cooking and washing took place”.
I’m choosing to submit the scullery as the kitchen and the one marked ‘kitchen’ as the living room. The formal living room/reception room or parlour is depicted in the bonus shots.
Street View - The top left picture is of the actuall property but the bottom left is only to show how the tenements look joined together. I think it's a pic of the same street, definitely the same estate but not actually of this house unfortunately. http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Build%20to%20Plan/StreetView-3.jpg
Plans http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Build%20to%20Plan/GroundFloorPlans.jpg
I had trouble converting the original plan to a jpeg and couldn't drag it to my image to collage them....I don't have time to figure out how I managed the first one.http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/upstairsplan.pnghttp://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/UpperFloorPlans.jpg I only managed to completely finish the master bedroom and bathroom. One of the kids rooms is almost finished.
Reception (marked as Parlour) http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Build%20to%20Plan/Bonus_Parlour.jpg
Living Room/Dining room (Marked as Kitchen - see above) http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Build%20to%20Plan/LivingRoom-2.jpg
Kitchen (Marked as Scullery) - the thing in the corner is a copper (http://www.1900s.org.uk/copper-water-heater.htm)
http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Build%20to%20Plan/Scullery_kitchen.jpg
Bedroom http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Bedroom.jpg
Bathroom (there is only one toilet, the entrance to which is outside - marked as loo. In the write-up on the website the bathroom is described as a cupboard with a metal bath) http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Build%20to%20Plan/Bathroom-3.jpg
Bonus http://i859.photobucket.com/albums/ab154/missroxor/Bonus.jpg
Bonus shows the alcove with the sink where the family do their every day bathing; Dad's workshop lean-to wich he built up against the wall where the toilet is (this is described on the website here (http://www.1900s.org.uk/1900s-back-garden.htm#garden)) I like to think this is where Dad would come for a sneaky wee dram and a smoke when he needs to escape from the kids and have some solace  ; The outside loo; The cold meat store and tiled outdoor wash area both of which are also mentioned at the above link.
PS for clarification, this is Victorian. British victorian is vastly different to American Victorian, the site I got the plans from gives some good pointers if you're unsure......actually, technically this house was built in the Edwardian era but they started building the estate in the Victorian era and the plans are Victorian :)
EDIT: I count 23 CC items:
1. windows (tall), 2. Windows (short), 3. hopscotch, 4. cigs, 5. scrub board, 6. piano, 7. net curtain, 8. candle, 9. crusifix, 10. sewing machine, 11. table cloth, 12. kettle, 13. fireplace, 14. bath, 15. bottle, 16-18. paintings, 19-23. patterns

Wow, missroxor, it is amazing authentic, although you didn't have to go that far. I'm sure much of the CC you used was to get that authentic feel. At some point, if you could just count up your CC amount, that would be amazing. There's still seven days left in the contest, so hopefully you'll be able to finish and update. As it is, you will lose points for not including the upper floor, furnished or not.
But wow, that is absolutely amazing. You've done a great job, yet again.

Thanks for the comments :) LL I will try to get on my sims computer at some point this week but if not it might have to just be a quick count from what I see in the pics and can remember.
Serraphine, It wouldn't even make it past the moderation queue because:
a) Its not a complete row, its one house sandwiched between two half houses that aren't even decorated.
b) I deleted all the chimney breasts....I vaguely remember reading that causes fires at a higher rate.
c) In an attempt to make it look as realistic as I can get it I've made no effort to make the game actually playable. My models had route failure tantrums every time I tried to make them sit somewhere for a photo

Question for Lifeslover/Judges - if there's no shed or anything in the plans, would it hurt me to add one anyway?
heaven
8th Oct 2010, 05:33 PM
Wickedblue - I can only speak for myself, but I don't see adding a shed to be a problem. If it's a small garden shed or something along those lines, I would consider it more aesthetic than floorplan functional. If it's huge or a garage when there is no garage, then I might consider it otherwise. I think, for the most part, it could be considered like the landscaping: if it shown, then try to copy it, if it's not shown, make it work with the feel of the house.

Oh, no! It looks like some of it warped! I'm so sorry.
Oh, wickedblue, about your question. Normally, I would not allow a shed or anything that was not on the plans, since that adds extra living space to the lot that wasn't in the original plans. However, due to the bonus category this round, you are allowed to make anything that's not included on the plans, including extra living space, if it falls under the bonus category.
And Sookielee, no, you have not missed the round 2 scores. I, unfortunately, have been derelict in my duty as host, and have not finished scoring everything due to some personal problems going on in my life right now. I swear, however, that you all shall know your scores by tomorrow at the latest. Once again, I apologize.

Yes, I'm sure it's my own fault. I don't think I supported the roof properly after I used constrain floor to make it. All the roof segments fell to different levels and some of the walls warped oddly.
wickedblue
8th Oct 2010, 09:03 PM
Lifeslover, thanks for that answer. I don't intend to make extra living space out of it, I just want to put a shell there basically for landscaping purposes. Basically, because of my lack of judgment on how big of a lot to use and where on the lot I should begin building, I have wound up with a lot of space to the side of the house and that is where I wish to put my garden but it would look really out of place, I think, without a building back there and also would not give it that private feeling that you are after this round.
I may not end up with it at all but it's good to know if I decide to go that route that you are allowing it. :)

I redid my house because it was out of proportion(too wide, roof was too high). Also I was confused about which end was the front since it listed a foyer in the rear and I thought a foyer was always in the front. However, when I went back to the floor plan page I found a sketch for the rear view and it was indeed in the rear of the house. (?) I decorated it as a foyer though it's placement in the house makes it seem more like a mud room. Oh well.
I did put in the basement and it actually was easier with it because of having to use CFE less. As helpful as CFE is I don't really like it since you make one false move and your floors/walls can exploded every which way.
Here's the new revised photos:

I had to use 3 different patterns just to get the outside painted because for some reason beyond my comprehension, EA did not make it possible to recolor the edge trim.
So, 3 patterns, 2 windows, the roof and the front door for 7 pieces of content.
I have to go in game to verify that so I will be back before round closing to update this if I have forgotten something.
Edit: I've triple-checked and I'm pretty certain that I got it all listed now.

Okay, geez. I am finally done with this round. For some reason, I just had a lot of issues with sizing and then decoration (and lacked inspiration as well). But, it is finally done though I feel like the house is more trouble than it is worth! It is supposed to have a basement but, there was no way to place the stairs in the correct place to do the basement under the foundation (the stairs are at the very side of the house) so I left it out. And due to EA's unfortunate lack of split levels (which we are all familiar with by now), the hallway is a tile narrower upstairs than it should be. By the way, it was a complete pain in the ass to find windows. I wanted to use Lisen's Nordic windows, which would have been perfect but none were able to tile on 2 tiles which was what I needed. So my windows were off but they were the closest I could find. But, it's done and I suppose that is all I can ask for.
Anywho, it is based on Plan W80249PM (http://www.architecturaldesigns.com/victorian-house-plan-80249pm.asp). It has 3 bedrooms (although I turned the smallest into a playroom) and 1 and a half baths. It shows a washer so my Victorian house has one.

I still haven't done the CC count and I realised a bit too late that I might've collaged something I shouldn't have (the bonus shot) but I just don't have time to fix it so I'll have to take the points hit. If I get the chance before bed I'll go through my pics and list the CC.

Wickedblue - I know how that goes! I did something similar with one of my houses for the MTS foundation challenge: I moved a house to a different lot to free up a 30x30. Unfortunately, I did not save to the library and wanted to upload (and since it was part of the contest, I wanted it to fit on the correct size lot). Fortunately, building for part of a contest forces you to take a good number of pictures, so I rebuilt it from the screen shots and it's practically identical. :)
Everyone, round 3 is almost to a close! Only 12 hours left. Make sure to get your entries in, make any necessary changes, and state your CC usage! Congratulations to the high scorers of round 2 and I look forward to going over entries in detail shortly!

Round 3 Entry
Well, this is my entry :) I've used 3 pieces of CC in this: The roof colour, the outside wall paper and the shutters. I'm not sure if the wallpaper counts as 1 or 3, because it's made up of 3 types (with the edges on different sides) but it's 1 set. I'll leave it up to the judges to decide that. :D

Cloudburst - I am just curious why you didn't use the siding in game? It looks like your siding and the edges are all one color (although it CAN be done to have edges another color; mine is siding that came with Ambitions). The siding looks nice close up, but it can only be seen in the one or two photos, other than that, it looks like standard siding. Do you really want to lose the points for it?

I did originally use the siding in game but it made the house look horrible (I think because the panels were too big so it look weird, but I can't really remember), so I got some decent looking stuff. Oh also the ones in game don't have one with edges on both sides, so it looks bizarre and uneven when it goes round one-tile edges. I could change it back, but I'm far too lazy to do that now. :D

For everyone who is changing entries, please do it by editing your original posts instead of creating a new one. There have been a couple posts that include some of the same pictures or that make a new entry for edited changes. Lifeslover links all of your entries in the first post for us judges and if you have multiple entries, she shouldn't have to bounce around trying to get the most recent edit. Just edit your post and put in the new pictures, information, or whatever you need to change. Then, if you want to make sure we know the post has been changed, just make a small reply with a link to your entry. Please keep this in mind for all of us scrolling through.

Hey, guys. I know the deadline's today, but I'm really sick right now and I can barely open my eyes, let alone work on the contest. So, I'm just going to let this go on another day. It's not really an extension, it's more that I just can't work on it right now, especially with finding the new entries people did and fixing up the front page. So, I'm going to work on organizing this tomorrow when I don't feel like I was hit by a Mach truck. This isn't an extension because I think everyone's gotten their entries in that's still in the contest but since I'm going to wait til tomorrow to start working on everything, you still have today to make any changes. Please don't forget your CC count, okay? I don't want to have to take unnecessary points off because you forgot to mention what you used. Judges, please wait until tomorrow to start scoring, once I get the front page in order for you guys.

heaven_sent, what is this siding you speak of that you can change the edge color? I have Ambitions and I still could not recolor it so I had to use the 3 patterns. It's too late for me to change my entry now as I'm at work and the round will be closed before I get home but it'd be nice to know for the future. :)
Edit: Oh, Lifeslover gave us another day while I was typing but I still couldn't change it anyway on account of that save game throwing up on me.

Wicked Blue - I'm sorry to hear you lost the house --it was gorgeous!

Well, there wasn't any set deadline for the extension. I just said I'd give an extra day. But since I usually close the contest around noon, and actually gave an hour or so more than that, I figured everybody had gotten their entry's in that were going to. I'll accept your entry, but I can't do it again, since it's not fair to the contestants who made the deadline.

I'll most likely share it on my blog once it's judged. If anyone is interested.
Lifeslover, if you're really stuck on a bonus category for this round, may I suggest you reuse the pattern or color idea from the first two rounds? I can't speak for everyone here but I wouldn't mind if you did that. No pressure. I'm just anxious to get started. :D

Tudors come from the very small to the very large. Can you fit a Tudor into a 30x30 space with enough landscaping around to make sure it doesn't feel small? Try your hand and see.

Here's my Tudor House. http://www.familyhomeplans.com/plan_details.cfm?PlanNumber=90348&src=search
This was tough since I like big lots and having to use a 30 by 30 lot was cutting it close but I did manage to fit a lot on the property. There is a tiled patio/grilling area, a swing, a slide, a sandbox, a swimming pool, lounge chairs, a telescope, a small fishing pond, trees, flowers, an outdoor chess table and chairs, a fountain, a flagstone driveway, a knubb set up (or whatever that lawn game is called) and a topiary garden in the front yard. I used a lot of store stuff but no cc. I loved that this house had straight stairs and no attached garage so I didn't have to futz around with CFE. yay!
There are marigolds surrounding the fountain which you can see in the closer front view pick but they don't really show up on the lot overview pics (just a hint of the orange flowers shows up--guess it was too far). I also knowingly extend the alcove windows 1 tile as they looked too teeny before but looking at the pic here I might change that back.
EDIT: I changed the 2 alcove windows and update pix and double check the CC - I used no CC.
Well, after the last three rounds (southern/victorian/tudor) I'm dizzy from all the prints, colors and kachkies (sp?). I'm actually a minimalist at heart and my often preferred palette is white, dove gray, and one or two pastel accent colors. And is it just me or is taking pictures of the rooms as hard as creating them? :)

The interior is very minimalistic by design as I was going for an authentic look for a family that wouldn't have a lot of money in that time period. Though, the addition of a garage and a washer/dryer probably detracts from the authenticity. :) But, they were part of the plan so I left them.
It is built on a 30x30 lot and has no custom content.

Here is my interpretation of the Gretle house.
http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz253/sandymdh/Competition/gretle.jpg
I have gone for an old fashioned tudor exterior but with a retro-modern interior (maybe I read to much into the comment about it being for the modern age but I enjoyed blending the old fashioned and retro styles together). Yes this house would be impossible to copy with it's curves but it was fun to build.
Here it is;

Thanks WickedBlue! I like how you went for the Tudor effect throughout. It is hard to get that look without CC (and even that is limited for Tudor) but I think you did a really good job of it.
Sandymdh - That exterior was very difficult but you seemed to capture the feel of the house. Love the pool area.
I was thrown a little with the Tudor/contemporary cooment so I tried to go for a modern family living with an old world decor.
Lifeslover - Would it possible to get the score breakdowns and comments for round 2?
Well, it looks like we will have Late Night in time for the last round -- though I wonder if there'll be any furnishings or build stuff that will fit the next category.
Good luck to everyone in round 4.

I would really be surprised if there was anything in LN to help with the last round though that would be awesome. I don't know what new build tools we get. I just hope I'm not so busy enjoying the new EP that I forget to build a house. :D

LOL. Yeah, we might all become a little distracted with the new EP this week.
The new build tools I heard of are the fountain building tool. curved pool, half walls, stages, and elevators. I'd imagine there would be a new window and door or two as well. There was some interesting furnishings (modern) in the screen shots I've seen.

Really need to try to finish my Tudor like NOW 'cause I won't be able to tear myself away from late night when it comes out. Oh my goodness, guys, I am so sorry. I had a lot of company come over for the weekend (six guests!) and I had absolutely no time to even come near the computer to check on my e-mail, forget anything else! I am so sorry for the late replies to the round 2 scores and for not having gotten back to any of you with round 3 scores. All of the judges have submitted their scores, I just have to compile everything together.
While I was away, though, I also got a job! It's nothing glamorous, but it's a paycheck and it'll allow me to go back to college and earn some much needed work experience. I'll also be able to afford Christmas presents this year! I start orientation tomorrow, from 10 to 6. I swear, when I get back from work, I will finish up everything that I left off for the last three days, including all of the scores and polishing up the first round page. I really am very sorry for having left everything so long. There's no excuse for it.
If you have any questions, please tell me so that I can get back to you about them. I've gone through the posts (nice job, everybody!) but I might've missed one or two.

Is it my imagination or do we have a lot less people than we started out with? :wtf:
I have a confession....this week has totally gotten away from me. I'm nowhere near finished and with Late night coming out in just 2 little hours I'm not sure I'll get finished....sorry.
I did have some technical issues too though (self inflicted due to dumb-assery); I decided to buy fast lane but I was in a rush to get it installed and I forgot to remove my mods folder so I had major crashing issues for a while there. I've managed to narrow the crashing problem down to something in my packages files but not quite sure what so had to remove the whole folder so I could get the game to play. Then I loaded up the game sans mods and remembered that all my windows, the front door and a few patterns were packages so I had to go back and try to find them and check they were not the conflicting files....urgh! If only I wasn't in such a rush to install that bloody SP I would've saved myself a lot of time and effort.
So, I'm gonna try blast though it for the next 2 hours and post whatever I manage (the structure's done, I'm just trying to decorate the interior and I haven't started landscaping  ) but I'm telling you now, it won't be pretty

3 patterns, 4 decor items, 1 window seat, 2 windows and 1 door = 11CC alltogether.... think I did well this time!....only cuz I had to remove most of my downloads
I'm bummed....Late night is not available for download yet :( Oh well, at least I can start on the new round....and since it's nearly over, my guess is gothic....I googled  I didn't realise real gothic was so old. I'm gonna need lots of downloads if it is

Hey guys! Okay, I don't have a whole lot of time left, since I have to start getting ready to go (it's about 9 am where I am). If I remember correctly, this round ends at 5 pm my time. That gives you about 8 hours left to complete it. However, I won't be here to close the round, so I'm extending it by another few hours, to 7 pm. That'll give me enough time to get home from work and close the round. I wasn't planning on getting the job and having to go to orientation so soon! I even had to change a doctor's appointment that I've had for a month because of it! But, anyway, yeah, it'll be extended for just a few hours. That gives you guys a total of 10 hours to complete your entry for this round.
Now, I have some really big news. This contest has been on-going, now, for nearly two months, about 7 weeks. That's about two weeks per round. We got off to a bad start with having to have another week just to move on to Round 2 and then problems kept getting in the way in both my life and yours, so I kept extending deadlines. To be honest, the contest was not supposed to go this long. I had originally planned on there being five rounds. I'd always wanted five rounds, to make this a nice, long contest. But I think that's been accomplished, don't you?
With Late Night coming out today (I won't be getting it until Christmas, unfortunately), a lot of you will be wanting to play around with Late Night, including the building tools. I don't want to have to extend the deadline for the fifth round due to computer crashing and patch problems and it will happen, it's happened every single time a new patch or expansion comes out. So, I have made the decision that the contest ends here, with just four rounds. I know that this is last minute, and I'm so sorry, but it's not fair to either you or the judges to be made to wait all of this time and I know for sure that with Late Night coming out, you'll want to check it out and play it more than anything else.
But that doesn't mean there won't be a fifth round! I'm making the fifth round optional, akin to those who built along with the Foundations Contest in the Chat Thread. They will not be judged and they will not be counted as a bonus to your score. It's there merely if you want to try it and show it off to others.
So, since this is the last round, try and make this one count! I'll update when I come home with round 3 scores and round 2 score breakdowns and answer all of my messages and close the round. I hope to see some great houses! I already see some great houses, you're all doing a fabulous job. And then, I'll compile all of the data and get back to you your round 3 score breakdowns and your round 4 breakdowns and scores. And then I'll get together all of the scores and find out who won, including telling you about the prizes!

My entry :)
I just used 1 piece of CC in this and built it on a 30x30 lot. Also, I couldn't add stais to the attic space because of the stairs below, and I couldn't place a window in the dormer in the middle because the wall is too low.

To be honest, I really don't want to judge another round anyways. The last round, I stayed up late on a work/school night to judge the round, because I promised I would, and didn't want to keep everyone else waiting too long. If I would have known that the scores wouldn't be in yet, I wouldn't have missed out on sleep that I so desperately needed.
I understand being busy. I have a 4 year old child and a job outside of this. But I made a commitment to do this that I intended to follow through on, because I love this community and wanted to give something back.
Lifeslover, you need to ask for help from somebody if you can't get these scores together in a timely manner. I'm sorry, but I missed sleep over this, and when you have a toddler, that's a big deal.

Round 3 Scores are finally here!
I apologize, once again, for the length of time in which it took me to finish everything. It will not be the same for Round 4. If you would like a Round 5, please tell me and I will make it. Round 5, of course, will not be judged, because I do believe that all of my judges are warn out and I'm sure most of the contestants are, as well. Anyway, here we go. As per usual, this is merely the rounded total scores. If you would like to see your individual scores, please PM me. I recently emptied my inbox, so your PMs should go through. And I do promise that this time, you will receive them within a day of sending your PM to me. I've already gotten everything together, so it won't take me long.

I want to take a moment to deeply apologize to all the contestants. I am embarrassed and ashamed of how this contest has been officiated. I understand that real life takes president over a virtual one, but I find the abandonment of the contest without even posting the remainder of the scores and announcing a winner appalling. With 3 judges Lifeslover could have easily requested any one of us to help her.
Again, contestants please accept my apologies and each of you should be proud of yourselves. All of you have done amazing, each of you have had to step outside you comfort zone with at least one aspect of this contest and did so beautifully with the appearance of ease. Great Work!

Hey guys, I'm sorry for my long absence. I had done the scoring, but I was waiting for the prizes to be finished before I posted. I really do apologize for leaving you all hanging without at least telling you of my intentions. Congratulations, of course, to Dantes.
I do have a few prizes for the contestants.
Attached, you'll find a cute little cottage starter that heaven_sent_8_18 built for all of the contestants.
There is a luxury home I built for the first prize winner, but I'm still working on it. Who knew luxury houses could take so long? There was another prize to be had, offered by fragglerocks, but I've, unfortunately, been unable to get into contact with her and I have not seen her around the forums in quite some time. Therefore, her prize cannot be offered at this time. If she does come back on and I catch her, I will, of course, get the prize up as soon as possible.
Thank you to each and every one of you, for all of your patience, your creativity, and for having fun. The contest unraveled quite spectacularly there at the end (completely all of my fault), but before that, I think we all had an enjoyable, fun contest. If you've learned anything at all (including what not to do), then I'll consider this contest to still be a success.
Remember, at least in my eyes, if you had fun, and you learned something, then we're all winners.
