The Sims 3 was released on VALVe's steam client today. Windows only though. All EP's and SP's are on there too.

Yeah, I noticed. You can get all of the stuff (expansion and stuff packs) in a bundle for $80 until sometime very early Feb. Pretty good deal in my opinion if any of your friends didn't get all the other expansions.

Can you run the game without the Steam Launcher or does it replace the EA launcher?

Not quite sure about that. I do know that you can disable the Steam Launcher (or was that Overlay) for any games.

I wonder if I buy expansion / stuff packs through steam, will they be compatible with the retail version of the game?

No, with Steam you need the Steam version of the game. I had the same problem with Civ4.
