View Full Version : How hard is it to move a window (so an n-tile window is centered in n+1 tiles)?

Okay, so I know everyone hates questions like this.

I've downloaded this great set of windows and doors that I'm using exclusively for this house I'm building, and it looks great and everything matches... but there are 4 places that I need one of the 2-tile windows centered on 3 tiles.

So my question is, how hard would it be to edit a window to be centered on 3 tiles that way? (I'm reasonably certain the ToU on the window I'm using would allow me to do this, at least for personal use.) Would I need milkshape, or could it be done all in SimPE? Is there by any chance a tutorial on doing just this somewhere that I happened not to find?

Or is it deep magic, and I'd be happier in the long run redesigning my floor plan so I don't have this problem?

(A little background on me: I've never meshed for sims 2, but I *have* done a little 3d modeling, some Poser clothes [that came out kinda bad, but functional], and some sims modding, all for sims 3 really... I'm pretty good at dealing with mucky computer stuff.)

It would not be very hard, but if you are not familar with object creation in general it could seem horribly confusing. Windows & doors are not good projects for your first clonings. There would be some minor mesh manipulations in Milkshape or similar -- just moving to center it correctly..

1. Clone the three tile window set from MaryLou. http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=228518
2. Export mesh from the 2-tile window -- keep North & South parts separate.
3. Export mesh from MaryLou's 3-tile window. Look at it in Milkshape & figure out where it is centered. (If I recall correctly, the 3 tile centers on x=1, but you will be able to see easily enough.)
4. In Milkshape, move the custom mesh so it is centered at the same place as the mesh in MaryLou's window.
5. Import repositioned meshes into your clones -- straight & diagonal.
6. Modify wallmask.
7. Make repository off custom set.
8. Don't forget to link up straight & diagonal.

If the above didn't sound vaguely familar to you, it would be better to redesign floor plan.

Ignorant Bliss has written a very good tutorial about creating custom windows which will walk you thru each step. http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=98436
