Here is a description of how to modify your CAS screen.
(I found this on a Sims2 site some time ago, but don't remember the author)
Changing the CAS background

I have figured out how to change the Create-a-sim backgrounds!! This requires a lot of directory searching so brace yourself. (Note: I did this on a PC, Windows XP)

--->Part 1: In the Sims 2 game:
1. Make a new neighborhood. Name it what ever you want but just do it. This is to make sure there are no other lots.
2. Exit the game.

--->Part 2: Outside the game:
3. Find your Sims 2 folder NOT in my documents, but where you said to download it (normally C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims 2 or something like that).
4. go to the \TSData\Res\GlobalLots floder.
5. The only file in there is a file named "CAS!.package" (no quotes). COPY this file.
6. Go to the Sims 2 folder under My Documents. Go to "LotCatalouge" folder and paste it there.
7. Rename the just pasted "CAS!.package" file to match the series in the folder already (as in if the files are named "cx_00000001" to "cx_00000012", name it "cx_00000013").
8. start the game back up.

--->Part 3: In-game editing:
9. Now go to your brand new neighborhood.
10. in the 'hood, go to your pre-built house bin and go to the end. at the end you'll find the CAS house. you can't miss it, it looks completly diffrent from the others and its named some random letters "jfhgi". place it anywhere in your empty neighborhood and click on it to build it.
11. Now edit how ever!-- with a few conditions: you cannot get rid of any of the decorations in the house already. The mirror and podium where the sim is made as well as all the pictures and the couch are all one object that you probibly should't delete. and the camera set up is also all one object. You can, however, change the house's look and put objects in and around the house.
DO NOT move the CAS camera set up's or the CAS Podeum's position unless you can change the camera position in \My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Cameras\CASCamera.txt (all 11 of them).
12. When your done, Save and close the Sims 2.

--->Part 4: Applying your house:
13. Go to \My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Neighborhoods, the last neighborhood folder(N00#) and "Lots"
14. the only lot that should be in there is the edited CAS lot. COPY it.
15. go back to the global lots folder where you found the CAS lot. cange the existing "CAS!.package" file to a bogus name like "original_cas.package"
16. PASTE the lot file you copied from the neighborhood. Rename it "CAS!.package".
17. Finished! Now you should be able to make sims in your newly modified CAS house!!
I have used this method with good results, and have made numerous custom CAS screens.
TIP: As the objects in the podium room are all one entity, you can use the "MoveObjects" and the "SnapObjecttoGrid" cheats to move the wall pictures/portraits slightly to the back and the right to hide them behind the walls.

Hope this helps :)

Durrr... well i managed to do it and i know what the problem was so i thought i'd come back and say just incase anyone else has probs that is as simple as me...

My lots bin was empty so i put in a home any home and then went back to lotscat and noticed the new home was named: cx_00000001.package no cx_Character_ before it.... i changed my 03 to this and it works.... :D

Hi, By the way, I'm the one who posted that there origanally. :howdy: When I didn't get much feedback, I went and posted on thesimsresource.com (that's before I found this great place). You can check if you want, by username's the same throughout.

Btw, something I found with these yesterday, it appears that in order to use a custom CaS with university you need to put a copy of the same customised CaS in both your original Sims2 & the University global lots folder or it will crash to desktop trying to go to create a family.

Kate :howdy: Could you tell me where in the Sims2 you put the file, just in the main folder? I tryed just putting it in the University global lots folder and it did crash. Thank you.

edited to say "I got it working!!" thank you

I had been wondering about this. I found out the hard way with changing the game to windowed mode that you needed to do this with both TS2 and university, but I was reluctant to try because the game kept crashing. Now that someone else finds that it works, I think I'll try again.

This might be why...The first time I tryed it I numbered it cx_00000013 (make sure you only have 6 0's simsroc I think you have too many 0's) and found the lot but the game renumbered the lot when I went back in to find it. If your lot numbers are like 01, 02, 03, 06, 07 etc the game will rename it 04...the next number in the beginning of the sequence. In your game it shows it as a whole bunch of letters example xykbrsyr

Incidentally, if you don't like replacing stuff in your main Sims 2 folder (a good philosophy to have), you can put your finished "CAS!.package" in your Downloads folder instead.

I recommend this if more than one person plays on your PC (i.e., different Windows user accounts). Now I can use custom content (such as downloaded objects/papers/whatever...perhaps custom "still life" paintings?) in a custom CAS scene without the risk of crashing my wife's game just because she lacks the custom content.

Thanks for this tut!

I've made several CAS & YCAS-screens with your help. :D

However, when I get to step 15 I don't go to globallots.folder an replace the original CAS.package. I put my package in downloads.folder instead-it works just fine and I don't have to fiddle with the original CAS.
When I get tired of my custom CAS screens I simply remove them from downloadsfolder.

Rythela, you can't take away the chair or paintings, they are part of the set.You can hide it in various ways, with walls, plants etc. Use the cheat "moveobjects on" and experiment.Good luck :howdy:

Thanks again!

Once you've created the new CAS do you put just the one new CAS in downloads from both the Sims2 and Sims2University and leave the orignals alone in their global folders or do you just put the the new CAS in downloads and for both games?

Yes,I put the new CAS & the new YACAS in My documents/EA Games/Sims2/Downloads!
This way you don't have to replace the original CAS in global lots & maybe forget where you put the backup.

You could try doing what I prefer doing when I change something - I also do it because with all my downloads, the game takes FOREVER to load when all I want to do is check something.

ONLY do this if you really know what you're doing!!!!

I just name my The Sims 2 main folder like eeeThe Sims 2, then let the game load and make a fresh The Sims 2 folder. Then I just name back and forth depending on which version I want to use....

But anyways, with the fresh copy, you'll be able to find the lot to change really simply.. and it won't mess with your "real" game.

Then just follow the instructions and put your new Cas one in the "real" game Downloads folder, rename it back to The Sims 2 and make your fresh copy to dddThe Sims 2... etc.... so that it doesn't load... and anytime you want to check stuff in the game, just swap folders again...

Errr.. hope that makes sense to someone, lol!

But these are before I got my copy of Nightlife. I'm planning to change it again.

Do I have to paste my custom lots to all three global lots (Sims2 Base, Uni, Nightlife) folder in order for the custom CAS to show in Nightlife?

Thanks.

I've made a ton of CAS screens, and they all work fine, so I decided to make a YACAS screen and when I got in game, and wanted to see how it turned out, there were no objects in it.. just the different wallpaper/floors.. the podium and everything was moved to where I put it, but none of the items I placed were there.

Anyone have a clue for me?

Also: I placed it in my C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 University\TSData\Res\GlobalLots, and when that didn't work, I tried putting it in the dowloads folder.. still nothing.

Just wanted to say "thanks alot" for the tutorial. After alot of back and forth tweaking, I have my first CAS screen and I like it alot.

I place walls on if front of the back painting in order to hide them and deleted the window. Everything else was just deco. I'll definately be doing more in the future when I get bored with this one.

One big question, for anyone who may have the answer...

Would it cause game conflicts if I kept a copy of CAS! in the Lot catalog so that I could make a new screen whenever I wanted, without have to cut and paste the CAS! file? ( I have it placed in my downloads folder).

Just wondering... since in the lot catalog it has a different name, I wondered if it could stay there as long as there was a CAS! file in downloads or the original location.

I'm including a pic of my CAS just to show off... hehe. If people like it, maybe I'll upload it here. (if I get permission from a couple of cc creators) :wavegbye:

Thanks booba. The main wallpaper in the CAS was made by me, but not the recolors, the flower vase and a wallpaper that is on a wall behind the window. I think I should ask the artists for their permission before I upload a CAS screen with their CC in it.

I wouldn't mind someone using mine (credit is always nice but let's face it... it's a game). Some artists however, are exclusive about their stuff and the last thing I want to do is piss someone off at me... hehe

I've just done one with Nightlife and it was fine. Did you follow the rules about naming it correctly in the folder?

Umm I did EVERYTHING right i managed to redo up the house and everything, but it just wont appear, can anyone help?

I have Uni, Nightlife and Original. What I did with mine, was I replaced my personal CAS screen with the one that was already there. I did this in all 3 games in the GlobalLots folder. The first time I only did it in one, and it didn't show up.

Does this help? o.o I've only just done one and saw this, so, yeah.. I'm no expert.

(15. go back to the global lots folder where you found the CAS lot. cange the existing "CAS!.package" file to a bogus name like "original_cas.package")

I tried and failed, then I put the new CAS.package folder into Program Files/EA Games/Sims 2 Nightlife/TS Data/Res/Global Lots, instead of the Sims 2 Global Lots folder.

Hi!
Thank you for this great tutorial!!!
I think it turned out pretty well for being my first time! :

Btw!
To get rid of the paintings and the sofa I moved the walls one step in and kept the paintings and the sofa on the outside! That way the room got a little smaller, but at least I got rid of the paintings and didn't had to move the podium and those things and the room turned out quite pretty anyways!
Hope it helps!

But can I just put it in downloads folder without having to erase the previous cas?

i just put my cas in the downloads folder... remember to rename it back to CAS! and not cas!

Also, for the step reguarding the first renaming process, i put my folder view to list, that way the numbers will be easy peasy to see, therefore easier to rename.

Hi, if you have Nightlife or above, don't forget to DELETE the old "jvbkl" or whatever the name was, house that you used to remodel the CAS background. THEN grab the house that should still be on the lot and add it back to the house l& ot bin still keeping that crazy name.

As you see, this actually replaces the CAS house you added earlier with the new updated one. !!!!! YES!

Now, go back and add the cx_00000000(your number) to the most updated expansion pack folder you have. Don't forget to name the old CAS! something else and name the new cx_00000000(your number) to CAS!

I made the SAME EXACT mistake! It took me like 10 tries until I finally realized that I had to delete the old "CAS House" THEN add the newly updated one back to the house & lots bin.

Have a great day and weekend!

if once you have found the lot you have created in your lot folder, rename it

CAS!.package

do not rename anything in any text files in your global lots folder, this CAS!.package file will override the maxis CAS as long as your new CAS is in your download folder. When you want to change it out, just remove the custom CAS package file from your download folder

Here is a description of how to modify your CAS screen.
(I found this on a Sims2 site some time ago, but don't remember the author)

I have used this method with good results, and have made numerous custom CAS screens.
TIP: As the objects in the podium room are all one entity, you can use the "MoveObjects" and the "SnapObjecttoGrid" cheats to move the wall pictures/portraits slightly to the back and the right to hide them behind the walls.

Hope this helps :)

it doesn't work because you need to rename the cx_00000013 package:

Cas!.package

then it should work

I still dont no where to find the folder thants not in my documents please help!!!!!

after creating a new neighborhood and you exit the game find the new cas lot by looking here:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Neighborhoods\N004\Lots

depending how many neighborhoods you have, there are 3 in the game if you make a new one it will be in N004, (whichever is the last one created).

copy that file and place it in your download folder and rename it Cas!.package being mindful to make the C a capital letter or the game will not read it.

You might try deleting "group Cache" in your

C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2

also delete contents of thumbnails folder, the game recreates these every time you play. After I did this my CAS showed up

Changing the CAS background

Changing the CAS background

I have figured out how to change the Create-a-sim backgrounds!! This requires a lot of directory searching so brace yourself. (Note: I did this on a PC, Windows XP)

--->Part 1: In the Sims 2 game:
1. Make a new neighborhood. Name it what ever you want but just do it. This is to make sure there are no other lots.
2. Exit the game.

--->Part 2: Outside the game:
3. Find your Sims 2 folder NOT in my documents, but where you downloaded it
4. C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\GlobalLots
5. The only file in there is a file named "CAS!.package" (no quotes). COPY this file.
6. Go to the Sims 2 folder under My Documents. Go to "LotCatalog" folder and paste it there.
7. Rename the just pasted "CAS!.package" file to match the series in the folder already (as in if the files are named "cx_00000001" to "cx_00000012", name it "cx_00000013").
8. start the game back up.

--->Part 3: In-game editing:

--->Part 4: Applying your house:
13. Go to \My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Neighborhoods, the last neighborhood folder(N00#) and "Lots"
14. the only lot that should be in there is the edited CAS lot. COPY it.
15. Paste it into your Download folder and change the name to:

CAS!.package

16. Finished! Now you should be able to make sims in your newly modified CAS house!

Also you should delete "group Cache" in:

C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2

also delete contents of thumbnails folder, the game recreates these every time you play.

Tip: As the objects in the podium room are all one entity, you can use the "MoveObjects" and the "SnapObjecttoGrid" cheats to move the wall pictures/portraits slightly to the back and the right to hide them behind the walls.

I know there's a hack out now to hide the stuff in cas (mainly that darned chair) but I'd like to figure it out how to do it without installing all the hacks at the moment. I managed to make one that I liked a bit better but I can't get rid of that chair in the left corner OR cover it? Any ideas? There should be some images attached. It's really simple but it's better than the original.

innocentlychii, the "hack" you're talking about to hide that stuff is not going to act like a game hack with conflicts and stuff - it just makes that stuff invisible. It's by windkeeper, available here, I have it and use it in my game, and all is fine. Get it. Use it. Love it. :D

As a forward note- I use TS2 & University. So that should clear up any expansion-related questions.

Hm. I'm having a very specific problem with my new CAS!. To put it simply, the Sims aren't visible at all. However, the thumbnails are still there (and yes, they are visible...But clicking on them does not make the Sim, or any part of him/her, reappear). I do not have problems with loading the CAS! itself or any other screen in the game. I've read through this thread, as well as other CAS!-creating FAQ's, and no one seems to have mentioned this.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but obviously this is a huge problem.

Here's a screenshot to clarify:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v50/pixuls/MIA.jpg

(I apologise for the size- I'm working off of Microsoft Paint and Photobucket. The two seem to conflict and sacrifice either size or quality, even if I am far below the maximum file-size requirement.. So I went for the size deduction.)

Anyway, I should also mention that I have tried the following things:
- Clearing the cache, thumbnails, etc.
- Placing the file in different locations. (ie- Downloads vs. GlobalLots)
- Deleting the CAS! altogether and reverting back to the original. It works fine, that way, so I know it's an issue with the new CAS!
- Changing the name to CAS!.package.
- Restarting the game.
- Restarting the computer.

Anyone know what's wrong? The only thing I can think of is the possibility of an item conflicting with the placement of the Sim. ...Not sure, though. The mirror may be placed too close to the pedestal, or something similar.

Also, I am using one of the mods that remove most of the items. Is this possibly the culprit?

Either way, I'll be trying to solve this conflict myself. If I figure it out, I'll let you know, that way if someone has the same problem in the future they can use this as a reference.

However, I would appreciate some feedback; someone may mention something I overlooked.

Nothing says that only works with the original Sims 2 - the icons are "requires" not "works with." If a particular mod won't work with certain EP configurations, the creator should/will state it in the text of the post. I have all the EPs and that works fine for me. BTW, in future, questions about particular mods need to be asked on threads about those mods.

Btw, something I found with these yesterday, it appears that in order to use a custom CaS with university you need to put a copy of the same customised CaS in both your original Sims2 & the University global lots folder or it will crash to desktop trying to go to create a family.

Thankyou so so so so very much, I've been trying to figure this out for ages... I even resorted to unistalling the whole game and reinstalling it but even that didn't work... it still crashed!!! Anyhow thanks so very much!!

You could use windkeepers new CAS object hiding file or you can use the cheats moveobjects on/off and boolprop snapobjectstogrid true/false to hide the paintings in the walls, just don't forget to turn them off before you save

if you don't like replacing stuff in your main Sims 2 folder (a good philosophy to have), you can put your finished "CAS!.package" in your Downloads folder instead.
did you delete thumbnails:

Do you have a copy of it in your downloads folder? If so you have to remove it, if not you might try deleting thumbnails in:

C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Thumbnails

and also delete group cache, the game recreates these files every time you play the game so don't worry about deleting them

Go through the steps very carefully, it could be that you did not copy and paste the saved lot file from:

\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Neighborhoods, the last neighborhood folder(N00#) and "Lots"

into a new folder in your Download folder and rename the file CAS!.package and name your new folder the name of your new CAS so it will be easy to find when you want to remove it.

Okay, I am not the first to ask this question, but hopefully I will be the first to get an answer. I have NOT had any trouble CREATING the CAS screen, but after a few uses with no problem, I find that when I enter the CAS, no objects show up. Just as someone mentioned before, I can see the sims fine, and also the different layout design, such as wallpaper, floors, & altered walls...but no objects (EXCEPT for the mirror, and probably the default paintings, too, although I have the invisible mod for those, so I couldn't tell). As I said, I saw this question asked before, but I don't think anyone addressed it. Does anyone have any idea what causes this?

medvilne
10th Mar 2007, 05:47 PM
Well i have really strange problem.
I creat my CAS and it work good , everything is ok. But when i try to creat new sim he is blue and i think he's really frozen. Well like in seasons, when sim get cold.
I tried to put roof but sims still get cold.
Have any ideas?

[sorry about my english]

marvine
10th Mar 2007, 09:48 PM
Medvilne,

I had the same issue happen when editing my favourite custom CAS with seasons installed; it worked fine until then, I just wanted to change an object - but then the sims started turning blue, hugging themselves, and the last times they fell on the ground totally frozen - one sim didn't get up afterwards like the others did , and the game crashed on exit.
I tried that with a freshly extracted CAS from the global lots folder, same issue.
I finally fixed that by installing Numenor's base game starter and editing the lot in OFB. So obviously Seasons installs this feature whenever editing a lot...

Reyn
11th Mar 2007, 01:03 AM
I noticed that myself. Tried my hand at it in seasons because I wanted to make a very pretty grotto - and to make it without seasons is going to take some hacking of objects, I'm afraid - worth it just for my cas screen, I guess, but....

Actually, another question. If you use custom stuff in a CAS, what does it do if you share it?

Im not sure what you mean by editing in OFB, Do you think that making a new CAS in Seasons will not work at all? Shouldnt EA make a patch? Is it worth waiting for, or is it better to wait for some talented artists and modders to create functional CAS which work in the EP 5.
Anyway , I´m a bit annoyed, cuz i waited extra with building my own CAS for after installing Seasons, and i`m full on playing now an would not like to deinstall.
Thanks for any other helpful ideas,
:)

It works - however, when making it in Seasons, it causes the sims you are editting to have colds - at least while edditing. When they sneeze and shiver, it makes them harder to edit.

Marvine thanks for posting about Numenor's base game starter. I tried doing it that way and it worked! It took forever because I screwed up the first few tries but I finally caught my mistake and now I have a custom CAS with no freezing Sims. :)

Hope this helps :)
whoever wrote that spelled folder "floder." Not that i have anything against people who misspell, but when i read it quickly i waz like wtF does that mean? :!!:

Ok, if you're using expansion packs (I have all of them Sims 2 Seasons being the one I have to load on) do you use that CAS or do you use the basic Sims 2 one?
Plus is there anything else I must do to get it to work with EPs?

Hi i have all ep installed except family fun, i have been playing the game for years but have only recently started modding, i noticed you can change the cas, i have followed the tuorial on here and a few other places but still cant seem to get it working, is there a limit to what you can add? i get as far as having the strange named house in bin, i move it to the hood then after editing move it back to the housed an lot bin then i quit the game,

then i move the completed package to downloads after renaming in CAS!.package. i do have the packages to hide the objects an podium and family room objects, when i load the game, the cas loads empty which i presume is because of the invisible packages. i dont move the camera or screen when editing.

Please someone help me im going insane.

Thanks.

OFB is the Expansion Pack "Open For Business". The Base Game starter is a program that allows you to start the game from an old expansion pack, so in theory, running the game through Open for business should take out the problems you are having with Seasons. This shivering thing is happening to me as well, and I'm going to give the Base game Starter a go. You can download it by going to Numenor's page and I think it's under 'Modding Tools'.

Let's hope this works!!

Thank you so much for posting this! It is really cool and I made a modern bedroom with a wicked awesome design. HOWEVER I AM VERY MUCHLY CONFUSED! When I go in the first persons face is the wrong skintone color, and the start shivering then try to move, but a noise that sounds like something freezing happens. and they keel over like a board. Then after a few seconds, they get up, and it keeps happening. I have to cancel several sims before I get one that is normal. Then in my other room where they wait, the view is wrong and either no one is there, or a dog/cat is there! When Im done with the family, they show up normally. I followed everything perfectly from your tutorial. What did I do wrong?
