First check if the hair has a normalmap attached, if so you need the GEOMS aswell.
Relink the normalmap to either a custom or blanc one after cloning.

You can also make them replace the orignals

i think your facing the tsrw bug with the random assigned joint.
Check if that particular joint has any weight on it, if not then dont bother when you lose the assignement.
