First I would like to say "Hello the Forums" - long time lurker, first time poster. On with the challenge -
The Boarding House Challenge

The purpose of this challenge is to run a house whose income is purely derived from it's "guests"

The Start

First create your sim in CAS with the following traits: Natural Cook, Neat, Handy
Your remaining traits can be anything, though Green Thumb and any positive Social traits are recommended.

Your LTW can be anything that isn't career related.

Lifespan MUST be normal, you MUST start as Normal lifespan Young Adult, you MAY NOT use any life extending abilities.

Purchase any empty lot of your choice. Keep in mind the full rules when making your decision.
Use "Kaching" 5 (And ONLY 5) times

The Rules

Aside from the starting money mentioned you MAY NOT cheat. Ever.

Your main sim MAY NOT generate an income through any method. No career, painting, busking, gardening for money, etc.

Household income will be generated by "Guests". These are neighborhood sims you invite to move in. You may keep both their "move in" money, and their income. You MAY NOT create any custom sims for this purpose, stock sims only. Guest rules:
-You MAY NOT have more guests than you have bedrooms. Bedrooms MUST include 1 bed, 1 dresser, 1 side table, 1 lamp. Bedrooms MAY include anything else.
-You MAY NOT have more than 4 guests per Bathroom. Bathrooms MUST include 1 toilet, 1 sink, 1 shower/tub. Bathrooms MAY include anything else.
-Guests MUST be kicked out after 1 week.
-Guests MUST eat at the house, food prepared by the main sim only. NO eating out, NO preparing own food.
-Guests MUST be left autonomous except for the following:Forcing them to eat host prepared food instead of making own/eating out. Forcing them to Sleep/Bathe/Toilet ONLY if their want is causing a Negative Emote.

The host (main sim) rules:
-MUST remain single. MUST NOT have children.
-MUST prepare 3 meals/day.
-MUST repair all items as soon as they break.
-MUST NOT use any services except fireman UNLESS they have failed to repair an item once. At that point they MAY call a repair man.

Every room in the house and the outdoor areas MUST be at least 1 level of Well Decorated (must create a positive emote.

Ending

The game ends when your sim lives out their natural lifespan.

Scoring:
+100 per *unique* guest
+10 per 10,000 final household funds
+10 per 10,000 final lot value

-10 per fire
-10 per successful burglary
-100 per repo visit
-200 per guest that dies on property from any means except old age

And there you have it. I'm starting mine up now and I hope you all enjoy. Any suggestions/questions very welcome and I will try to answer them quickly. Screenshots are very welcome. Let the games begin!

That's the most unique challenge idea I've seen in a while. I have way too much going on with my Sims right now to start a new project, but I will definitely be coming back to this idea. Congratulations on coming up with a good challenge.

This is great idea for a challenge , and I am busy preparing for it. I have my Sim all ready, and have bought a nice lot. I have a question, can I start off with say 2 rooms, and then build on as I go, or were you seeing it more as starting off with all the furnished rooms before challenge begins?

Definitely starting with 2 rooms or so! I expect money to be pretty constantly going towards upgrading the house. You do have to have a separate bedroom for the host and any guests though, which is what the extra 5k is for. Sadly I'm on brief hiatus from doing it myself as my game is being weird, but I hope to be back at it soon. Enjoy!

Great challenge! I'm currently working on Pinstar's famous Legacy Challenge, and don't have time to start a new one, but I'll be starting this challenge after I finish my current one, for sure.

One question: What exactly do you mean by "+100 per *unique* guest"?

By unique I mean that you cannot move a sim out and then back in counting them as two separate guests.

Ah okay, thank you.

Also, when you say Adult, do you mean strictly Adults only or are Young Adults allowed?

(Sorry for so many questions).

when you said no life extending stuff can you use the no age stagger mod that makes it so when you first make them they start at the beginning of their lifespan?
Also, what lifespan should it be set to?

The challenge was designed for Normal lifespan Young Adults. I noticed now that I put "Adult" in the rules, so feel free to extend your life the appropriate amount (20 days iirc? not sure off the top of my head.) if you started as Adult. As for the age stagger mod, that should be fine. Glad you are enjoying the challenge!

My Mz Rhea Veange had a boarding house - she got new boarders each time I had a real-life resentment *(usually my ex and his new wife or one/both of my sisters) - their simself would move in.. get comfortable - learn to trust Rhea Veange - then, be lured to one of the 'hidden' areas in the lot - and come out an urn..

which works with the boarders having to move out in 1 sim-week...

Since this has been up for a month now, has anybody been playtesting this? I really like the idea of challenges in which you don't just minmax a career, but I'm just worried about some of the constraints.

It seems like you need a lot of social interaction to even get one NPC to move in, almost as much as it takes to get someone to marry you. It seems like it would be very difficult to do that much interaction while preparing three meals a day and the other chores. And even if you did, you then have to go out and try to convince a slew of new sims to move in again after just one week? I really the sound of this challenge, but the moving in thing sounds almost unfeasible.

And, if the guests are only permitted to stay one week, is it really feasible to get enough of an income from them to actually expand your boarding house? Or conversely, wouldn't some sims bring in a truckload of cash based on where they're moving in from, making it very unrealistic?

Anyway, has anyone actually tried this challenge?

If there any cheats to make sims move in? Perhaps use merge households?

Agree with Mazzle getting someone to move in is hard, the challenge here should be to manage the boarding house, here the main challenge is to seduce the target sim first, seducing while living where are part of the fun is.

I'm going to start this tonight! It's such an original idea (as far as I'm aware)

Also, to Mazzle and magnemoe - I'm willing to assume that we are allowed to purchase the LTH rewards so you could always save up enough to buy the 'Attractive' reward to give starter relationships a boost? It would make the whole reaching the point of being able to 'ask to move-in' slightly easier.

That's one of the strategies currently snowballing in my brain anyway!

I just started this, so I am not that far in, but it really isn't as hard as it sounds. I just focus on getting one boarder a day, and I write down what day they move in, so I know what day to move them out. As soon as I can, I invite them over so I can keep up with meals and needs. Then I keep up the hard sale on my boarding house til the move in becomes an option. Then I focus on chores.

As for income, the first sim I moved in was the only person in his house, and he sold his house and came with $36,000. I didn't know this until the move in screen came up and told me. The second guy brought $900 so I figure it evens out. I've been playing poverty challenges, so this didn't seem quite kosher, but I didn't see why not-or any way around it. I am supposed to get boarders, and I didn't know who lived alone or not; I have just grabbed the first people I saw.

I do have a couple questions though...

If the boarder comes unemployed, am I allowed to have him get a job? I have been pretty much ignoring them once they move in except to call them to meals. And, is it ok if they have a meal at work?

I am accumulating a lot of leftovers. Is it ok to put out leftovers for a meal, or do I have to prepare all three meals and let the leftovers go to waste?
