Default Failed to enumerate any DirectX 9 compatible ....READ POST!
Hi folks,

Whenever I try to run the Sims 2 Bon Voyage expansion pack I get this message:

Failed to enumerate any DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapters in this system!

Please make sure you have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest manufacturer provided driver.

The application will now terminate...

This problem has been bugging me for 2 days already.. and I feel as if I've tried practically everything! From going on google and searching the problem, for ways to try and fix it, to going on Nvidia's website and downloading drivers, as well as going to the control panel's Device Manager and manually clicking on graphics driver, right clicking and asking for my computer to look for driver updates.. it updated, but didn't work, I also tried downloading DirectX 9-10... always got problems. (I even have DirectX 10 on my computer already!)

Its just really getting on my nerves. and I'm just in need for someone to get me out of this mish-mash of a mess, and guild me.. Please!

Here's the info (Diaxdiag):

If you need any more information than that, just say so. I'll be happy to post it... just tell me how to get the information because I'm not all that tech-savvy.

Thanks!

I have a feeling this may be one of the cards that is problematic with TS2- I'm hoping Callistra will read this and post.
Meanwhile... have you run a DX diagnostic (type dxdiag in the run bar)? Also, try deleting your Documents/ EA Games/ The Sims 2/ Config folder to force the game to redetect your hardware. backup the folder first if you have any config mods in there, or maybe a userstartup.cheat file.

I deleted the config folder.. and tried everything.. *sighs* still didn't work. But thanks for trying..

Maybe it is an incompatibility with the chipset- there is a similar issue here:
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthre...437#post1962437
The 8400 chips aren't on the supported hardware list. Have you tried some different drivers- Omega, perhaps?

I don't think theres an incompatibility issue.. Because I've ran the sims 2 bon voyage perfectly 3 days ago. I've heard of Omega, and went on their website too.. But don't omega drivers do not support laptops? I'm using a Dell XPS|M1330 Laptop. (With Vista Home Premium 32-bit operating system).

Ahh, in that case, can you think of anything that has changed on your computer just before this happened? For example, have you installed any software, or any Windows updates? Run virus and malware scans. Anything could be significant. It's also worth running the Dell hardware diagnostic utility; you should be able to boot into the utility partition or else boot from the driver disc you got with the laptop.

It's not a problem with the hardware being incompatible.

Someone said they developed a problem where their game would crash after installing Vista SP1.. and removing it solved the issue. It wasn’t the same error though, and I hate to recommend uninstalling that because I have found it really helpful in eliminating bugs but I think it’s relevant enough to at least mention.

I’ve read up on various people on the web developing this problem in some extreme cases the only time I’ve seen it fixed is with a clean install… which is nuts because that means there had to be something going on software wise if only we knew what.. I would agree with simsample to try and think about ANY possible changes that have been made to the computer since the problem started. I would also recommend patching your game and all expansions as I’ve seen this also be a fix. There is a full list of patches available here: http://thesims2.ea.com/update/index.php If you have Norton I also recommend getting rid of it as I’ve seen Norton cause this as well.

eta: *backtracks* Uh you went to Nvidia.com to get graphics drivers? You shouldn't have been able to download graphics drivers from Nvidia.. If you did the automatic scan it should have given you an message about not supporting laptop drivers and refer to manufacturer.. and if you did the manual look through the drop down menus drivers for the 8400M aren't even there..are you sure you downloaded laptop drivers and not desktop drivers? In this case I recommend going to your control panel and uninstalling everything to do with the Nvidia graphics, restarting your computer, and downloading the newest graphics from Dell . You're looking for where it says under 'video' for where it says 'nVidia - Driver' dated 3/18/2008. Laptop graphics drivers can be somewhat specific to different laptops so it's possible this is the cause.. and actually the error is indicative of a driver issue/conflict so it's certainly worth a try.

I'm not really sure about what Vista SP1 is.. But I can tell you, that my computer had some updates that needed to be installed. Could it have been possible that Vista SP 1 was installed by updates? Or is Vista SP1 program whereas the user would have to manually install it..? Because, frankly I don't remember installing anything that relates to Vista SP1. Is the Vista SP1 application in the Add/Remove programs.. because I'm willing to uninstall it.

Yeah I went to Nvidia, to download a graphics driver.. I thought it was pretty insignificant to add into the main post.. but your correct, it didn't work when I tried to install various Nvidia drivers.. I thought I was doing something wrong. Again, I'm not so tech-savvy. But since I had Nvidia, I thought I was to go to Nvidia's site... Not Dells. But I'll give Dell a try right now, and tell you how it works out.

Unfortunately, my last try didn't work when I downloaded and installed the Dell driver.. What I'm going to do now is patch all of my sims 2 expansion packs and see if that works. You can get the patches with a link provided Callistra.

You have'nt got service pack 1 installed, it would show Build 6001 in the System information.

You have got a very old Nvidia driver (56.69), That's probably half your trouble.

Service pack 1 should be showing up via Windows update, install it you will see a marked improvement.

It's possible one of these updates caused the issue. To know what was installed you should go to your start menu -> all programs -> up towards the top should say Windows Updates. Click on it and it will have a link somewhere on the screen which talks about history or previously installed things.. I'm doing this off memory from an XP machine so sorry if the wording isn't perfect. Anyway if you find the link it will tell you what was installed in the last couple days. Post the list here? You can also try uninstalling whatever it was.

Before you start uninstalling updates here's a thought.. try rolling back your graphics drivers. You can do this by going to device manager: Right click on my computer -> click properties -> Look to the left it should say 'device manger' in a list. -> Look where it says "display adapters" and expand it. -> Right click on where it says you have the 8400 GS and click properties -> Click the 'driver' tab at the top and click 'roll back driver'.

After the rollback restart your computer and try your game. If it didn't work, follow the instructions and roll back one more time.

Might be a little different in Vista.. can't remember.. Should be close enough to follow.

Did you try the other solutions offered in this thread? for example, refreshing the config folder, patching the game; trying some older drivers if the newer ones do not help; testing the game with a completely clean Sims 2 folder?
